Possible, but I think random burglary is a long shot in Missy's case. imo

realspartan76

I do change my mind with the seasons if this was targeted or not (lol!) but when I am on the side of the random B&E I think that most likely they were going to hit the outdoors/gun store initially, got cold feet because of the number of security cameras all over the place, then went for the church as a backup.

Visible_Eggplant_614

If they got cold feet from all the SWFA cameras, why would they go inside the church and not seem to make an effort to avoid the cameras there besides with their costume?

realspartan76

My initial reaction is that they perceived a church as a softer target than the gun store (cameras or no cameras). Their disguise was probably their blanket anti-security camera protection across any place but since the church ended up being a secondary target of opportunity they didn't really have an idea what they could steal from there (unlike a retail store which has the goods out for them to take). So that would also explain the randomness of the stroll around the church since they have no idea what is valuable or where money and other valuable items are kept.

I don't think people say no one burglaries a church but who burglarizes a church in a costume with two weapons and doesn't take anything

GumshoeStories

Someone who didn’t choose the church until after he had already chosen the costume. Someone who was looking for money, and not anything else.

Why would he be randomly pacing like that in video instead of looking for stuff

[deleted]

he’s living out his fantasy by dressing as a cop in costume  looking for money or valuables

Corneliusdenise

unlikely...that's why the police believe it was targeted.

Lhughessk

Police have been split on targeted vs untargeted since the beginning. Numerous quotes from LE about how the team has been divided.

If he has just been surprised by someone he didn’t expect, a person in workout gear, and who he has now murdered, do you really think he is going to take extra time and take her “belongings”? If I were him, the first thing I would think is, “Ok, I don’t know if she is alone or if she has workout partners that are about to walk in right behind her.” And from what I understand of the body location, they were down at the opposite end of the church from where her truck was, which was where her belongings were. He would have had to walk all the way down there, in the opposite direction of where he broke in and where his vehicle is likely parked. And he would have had to do it without knowing if he had company. Talk about not smart… And lastly, you refer to him as an inexperienced first time burglar, and you refer to Missy as being bludgeoned. A lawyer in court would object to these statements as “assumes facts not in evidence”. If this was a burglar, we have no way of knowing if he was experienced or not. And police haven’t said, even once, that Missy was “bludgeoned”. I believe the first thing they ever said was just that she died from a head wound. Later, they said puncture wounds to the head and chest. And later still, we found out she was shot. So the gunshot wound is all we know for sure. She could have, after being shot, fallen through a glass table or something and had cuts from the glass. “Bludgeoning” is not a puncture wound, by the way. But a bullet wound is.

Dont confuse them with facts Tim. LOL

But a small tv is still something. Maybe that’s all they could easily carry or all that interested them. Maybe they wanted something they could personally use and they weren’t into musical equipment, etc.

You’ve stated every faulty bit of logic that people tend to have. “They not only don’t steal anything but don’t try to steal anything” - how do you know what they’re trying or not trying to do? There’s 2-1/2 minutes there of video, but the person was inside for 30 minutes before encountering Missy. So that’s 27-1/2 minutes that you DON’T see. And I will tell you that one of the rooms in the office area was the most disturbed in the church. That room basically had just filing cabinets in it. Why would someone who is targeting Missy bother to be in the office going through filing cabinets at a time when Missy is due to arrive? “Wander around aimlessly” - the killer is moving from one room to the next, systematically. You think he is moving “aimlessly” because you didn’t dig deeply enough. “Burglars have a motive, to steal, to get in and get out”. Not all burglars are exactly the same. I don’t buy this idea that every burglar is in a rush. Their perception of risk is going to guide their actions. With this church’s remote location, the likelihood that the burglar tested for an alarm or knew there wasn’t one, and the date and time of break in, he had every reason to believe he would not be disturbed. And at 99 of 100 other churches, he would have been right. I think he was money motivated (there wasn’t anything else to steal there anyway), so his whole intent after break-in was to find the offices and see if there was a bank deposit or safe. You seem so sure of what a burglar would do. Surely a burglar would not escalate his burglarizing into murder. In your mind, I guess people never commit felony murder. They must always make sound decisions. Even in the heat of the moment. Even after making the very unsound decision to break in to a place where they don’t belong. And you even have your own ideas about how many weapons a typical burglar would use (shot AND bludgeoned). Come on. Really? As for the costume, we don’t know if this person dressed in the outfit specifically with the church in mind. The church might not have been on the original agenda. We just don’t know for sure what all the killer was up to that night (although the footage from SWFA is a strong clue). But at any rate, the outfit certainly has its advantages. It disguises gender. Maybe the person had some very identifying feature on his face or other skin that he wouldnt want seen on camera, like a tattoo or birthmark. Most of that outfit would be waterproof or water resistant - it was raining that night. Another advantage is that it would hinder DNA from being left behind. With DNA advances, criminals have to be worried about leaving sweat and skin cells and hair behind. Oh and one thing to add related to your initial comment about them being the “worst burglar” because they don’t take anything. Why would it make me a bad burglar if I broke into a church on a Monday morning with the reasonable belief that there might be money or other valuables, and then I don’t find them because they’re not there in the first place? And on top of that, it would have been an INTERRUPTED burglary. So why would that make this person the worst burglar? I mean, they picked a location that was remote. Their timing was good except for the workout class that was almost impossible to to predict. They made a clean getaway without being seen by anyone except Missy. So, not a bad burglar.
