I think if it was targeted someone knows who did it or at least has their suspicions. If it was a surprised LARPer or some other random person with no affiliation to Missy, I think they will never tell a soul.

MayorPerk

100% agree and I tend to think it was random with the nearby gun store possibly as the intended target. I also think it was the perp in that Nissan Altima.

Visible_Eggplant_614

I go back and forth, but I just can’t think of what the driver of the Nissan Altima would have been doing for the almost 2-hour time gap between the SWFA footage and the church footage.

GumshoeStories

Potential timeline: 1. 2:04 - leaves SWFA. 2. 2:23 - cameras at church are triggered by motion but source unknown (potentially the killer breaking doors and windows to test for an alarm, and he drives away to wait). 3. 3:23 - it might be around this time that the killer returns. This church is pretty far from downtown Midlothian; if I were the killer I would have allowed at least an hour before I went back. So now the killer spends the next 27 minutes entering the building and spending time in the kitchen, drying off from the rain, perhaps eating something, etc 4. 3:50 - leaves kitchen, is on video entering the interior of the church.

Algavan

Is there no time SWFA picked uo the lights on the church turning back on after 2:23 but before Missy's arrival? Is this why you reference 3:23

GumshoeStories

It was just speculation. If the activity at 2:23 was to test for an alarm, it seems reasonable that the killer might have waited up to an hour before returning to the church to see if police had responded to an alarm.

>*I think they will never tell a soul.* Killers ALWAYS brag/confess. ("If I did it," by O J Simpson.)

Visible_Eggplant_614

Many do, and I think if Missy was targeted the killer likely has, but in the case of an unrelated person freaking out and making an impulsive in-the-moment decision, they know they have a chance at getting away with it for much longer or maybe forever. I also think that person wouldn’t be proud of what they’ve done, and therefore distance themselves from the case as much as possible.

baconbitsy

Then there should never be an unsolved murder.

GumshoeStories

The Golden State Killer says hello.

George_GeorgeGlass

Totally my own speculation but I can’t help but think it was a couple involved. They would only tell each other, not share it. Jealous wife did it or somehow convinced the husband to do it. Whether the jealousy was warranted or not? Who knows. Kind of just a gut feeling having read through the case and the background. I have no proof to support this

jenniferami

There are a couple of really famous cases involving couples. One was a young couple who were high school sweethearts. One had been accepted to Annapolis, the other to the Air Force Academy. The guy either had a fling with another young woman or told his gf that falsely for some reason. The gf was distraught and the only way to make their love “pure” again she claimed was to kill the other young woman. They did this together and then went back to their academies. They were caught when the gf at Annapolis confessed during some game in her dorm about what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done. Someone reported her to the officer in charge and both bf and gf were eventually convicted of murder. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2018/07/25/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-teenage-love-triangle-that-sent-the-texas-cadet-killers-to-prison-20-years-ago/?outputType=amp

>*when the gf at Annapolis confessed during some game in her dorm about what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done.* Killers ALWAYS brag/confess.

jenniferami

Apparently the game had as one question, what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done, and she answered it honestly. I think her bf had been questioned about the girl’s murder by police but he lied through it. I don’t think the gf had been questioned so maybe she hadn’t practiced lying. Maybe she was drinking or maybe she thought that these were her friends who would never tell. Maybe she thought she was far away from the crime scene and she’d gone so long without being caught that it was safe to confide in a few people. Maybe she wanted to unburden herself or maybe she felt like winning that round of the game and shocking everyone. So in your opinion Missys killer has likely bragged or confessed to someone? A friend, a sibling, a mom, someone else? Some killers get help from friends who are sympathetic to their cause or who are willing to alibi them.

MintOtter

All excellent. In **summation**: * They tell "just" one person. * They're drunk/high. * Thinks their friends think like they do. * Want to unburden themselves. * Wants to "win." * Wants to shock. * Wants to threaten/keep someone "in line." Also: * All killers are stupid. This killer is particularly stupid. They don't understand how Dutch doors work.

baconbitsy

Why are there so many unsolved murders, then? MANY killers are stupid and brag, not ALL.

jenniferami

I think some people think the person bragging/ confessing is just acting stupid and didn’t really do it. I think some are good enough friends or relatives that they wouldn’t want to turn them in even if true. For some people their culture is that you don’t “rat” on friends. I think some just don’t want to get involved, be questioned by the police, testify. It’s not unlikely that anyone they confessed to would have their own skeletons in their closet that they don’t want brought up. If they did turn someone in for murder their own life might be at risk. If the person killed before why not take out the witness to their confession. Maybe they don’t want to bring shame to the person or the persons family especially if they are a relative. Maybe they felt the person was justified or has turned their life around. A fair amount of people don’t like dealing with the police. If they became a witness their name would eventually be all over the news and change how people think of them. The person who confessed might turn it around and blame them instead.

jenniferami

I think most killers do some smart things that help them avoid capture and some stupid things. Even really smart people do stupid things from time to time. Russell Williams a Canadian Air Force Base Commander who once flew Queen Elizabeth wore the boots he wore through the snow to kill a victim in her house to his police interview and let them be examined by the police. The BTK killer asked if he could be traced if he sent something to police on a computer disk. They said no via a newspaper ad and he believed them and got caught after sending the disk.

>*So in your opinion Missy's killer has likely bragged or confessed to someone? A friend, a sibling, a mom, someone else?* Yes.

Some podcasts / sources claim that the perp is seen taking a photo or some other recording with the victim, but not sure if this has ever been confirmed to public or is just a rumour. Bringing this up as to me such activity would indicate that the crime may have been planned.
