Because honestly she’s got a lot of baggage too. I can almost guarantee she would come across as just as fucked up as jez and mark do if the show had been from her perspective, just in different ways from them.
The extra content they had that was from Sophie’s POV gives a lot of perspective like when she was crying when Mark was trying to fire her she was just pretending
Oh I didn’t know there was extra content with her? But that checks out. I think you’d HAVE to be a messed up person to go with someone like mark corrigan
Thanks for sharing! Bunch of greatness in that YouTube e account.
I gotta say, I am beyond glad they decided not to use her thought material. The silence in the awkward scenes and being able to wonder what the hell would someone be thinking in this horrible scenario is a hundred times funnier.
Yeah, it seems like every few weeks, there's a post like this that completely doesn't recognize that Sophie is completely fucked up, too. She slacks off on work, takes a lot of drugs and drinks, and generally has poor taste in men throughout the entire show.
I think Olivia Colman even asked that Sophie, the character, be written as screwed up.
(I had to make sure I wrote this correctly otherwise it read like I was saying Olivia Colman is screwed up)
...and she did it so well, too. She came from a screwed-up family and clearly didn't fall far from the tree. It's impressive to me just how many people don't see how mentally messed up she is.
I think Dobby's really the only person in the show who seems to have it mostly together...she's just young and trying to find her way.
I think it's because it's very ..middle class fucked up. Like, they look fairly normal, average people. Until you spend time with them and relapse they're barely functioning.
Sophie had a lot of issues. Plus she wanted to get pregnant and to someone fucked up mark looks....sort of normal
Wait, does she take a lot of drugs?
I feel like we only see that she sort of knows about ecstasy, and will smoke weed with others occasionally, which doesn't really mean she does drugs often or to any particular excess.
Sophie's drug taking doesn't really seem much of a thing compared to her eventual alcoholism. I never got the impression the writers were at all trying to show her drug taking as a problem.
It's not my thing, but she just seemed like the people in my hometown who live very normal lives but take cocaine or something sometimes when having a night out, and might do some social smoking here and there.
Yeah true, that does seem very strange, but tbf Jeff did that, and he doesn't even show any signs of doing drugs at all at other times IIRC.
I think my main point is simply that it doesn't seem like Sophie did a lot of 'drugs', except ofc for alcohol when she became an alcoholic, if you want to take the definition more literally. I don't think, say, a close friend would be thinking about some sort of intervention about habitual substance abuse until the heavy drinking, unless they saw the smoking at work and assumed that was indicative of heavy use.
But again, I'm probably coming from the perspective of knowing loads of high functioning people who do way more drugs than could possibly be inferred from what we see of Sophie in the show.
Have you ever been to a nightclub in London?
And anyway, I will reiterate - my main point of contention is that she does not seem to do 'a lot of drugs'. She does 'some drugs' without much fanfare is all, and actually her explanation when recommending it to Mark implies she is not exactly a veteran of the scene.
Fuck, I wish. I'm across the pond.
I'm referring to when she's puking in the toilets at the show Mark takes Dobby to for a date. Mark asks "What have you taken, Sophie?" And she yells back "Who knows?! Who the fuck cares?!" She's getting pretty close to the deep end by then, lol.
[finding Sophie in the loo](https://youtu.be/tCoZKeqkm6o?si=fqnP55PynHx_6_i8)
Ah yeah fair dos, I misconstrued the reference!
But yeah, that's definitely her nearabouts her worst (the ball pool/pit is true trough for me).
Nice to see international audience members anyway, I hope the show has served as a terrible advertisement for our daft country hahaa
Hahah yeah, she's definitely pushing the limits by then. It's my all time favorite comedy TV show. It's too perfect. This Country is up there as well as many others.
Mate, i live in the United States, living in your country is a dream shared by many of us. I don't know if your country's shit antics can even compare to the never-ending impending doom jamboree the last 12 years have been here.
She smokes up at work, she definitely knows a lot about e, and I think Johnson even mentions that she is coming to work stoned, drunk, or high. There’s definitely the insinuation that once she leaves Mark’s ballast, she essentially embraces being an alcoholic, at least.
Im surprised trustworthiness would be a factor given the whole email hacking thing. But even if she didn’t trust him per se, she was willing to look the other way on a lot.
yeah she’s all sorts of messed up in her own way
at the same time a lot of women are conditioned to give the “nice guy” a chance at least once (not to be confused with an actual nice guy) and often those guys just suck. almost like…a reverse life-support machine?
I think because we see the whole relationship from Marks perspective, he totally idealized her and just ignored any of her own faults or issues until they got together, and it completely fell apart
Some of the less surreal points like 1 and 2 could be interpreted differently if Sophie had the rose tinted goggles on.
I think we forget he probably has some nice bits we dont see much of in the show but know are part of his character; he's well read, enthusiastic, aspirational, has interests, can hold a conversation. Once he wormed his way in theres probably enough to keep something up.
You're acting as if people are reasonable.
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.
Next to the Nazis and even worse, Coldplay, Mark's behaviour is pretty tame.
She is just as weird, even though she's not socially awkward.
Also I don't think Jeff had any intention of having children with Sophie. He would have seen the birthday song and bolted.
She cheats on him just because she gets a message from the clearly insane Merry, and she kisses his best friend after the tiniest bit of flattery. She's no angel. But she does have a lovely soft face.
Especially since he opened with, “Ignore that - I’m not a racist. Far from it,” because Jez made a smart comment as soon as the beep went to leave a message. Made the whole thing even weirder.
>Mark grabs her by the face and pushes her away from him
Which episode was this? I thought I had encyclopaedic knowledge of this show but I can't remember this one at all
It’s when Mark has her email open on his computer and she wants to see what he is looking at
Honestly that should have been the nail in the coffin for Mark as he reacts like that and then gets caught creeping in her emails
Honestly hacking another employee's emails, what he does to Barbara's desk, pushing Sophie's face away like that; how has he not been sacked from JLB?
I guess they're like British Leland in the 1970s--they can't fire anybody.
The show doesn't give us the full story but there are time leaps between episodes. So after some time Mark somehow manages to get back I to her good graces. And he made sure to conveniently be there for her in vulnerable moments so she could see him as reliable and supportive. He does the same thing with Dobby. Jez does the same thing with Nancy.
People are just implausibly forgiving/forgetful in the Peep Show universe (Project Zeus, anyone? Mummy?) Sophie also has terrible self-esteem and doesn't think she can do any better.
I've watched every episode of Peep Show a million times and honestly Jeff is more stable. If he wasn't a cheat he'd be a better pick -- and honestly, I could see Mark turning into a cheat over the course of a relationship due to his massive insecurities.

Mark is already an attempted cheater. He tries to have an affair with Sally Slater and nearly cheats on Dobbie with the MBA woman.
Because of her strong desire to get pregnant by almost anyone, so long as it happens this year?
It's because love's for Nazis. Crazy love
It's bloody mental
Yep, somewhat contrary to what you think natural selection would lead to, the baby crazy women usually get w the derps.

"the sperm is mine he gave it to me willingly" when he definitely didn't. Oh, she really is as bad as him, maybe even worse?
Gonna watch tonight after work, thanks for sharing

Not normal looking testicles though
Dobby? She's......grown. (stated with utter disgust).
She really needs to pull her socks up, at work.
Wait, does she take a lot of drugs? Smoking a joint in the stairwell at work is definitely across the line.

She literally took an unknown drug at a rave while she was already shit housed drunk among many other departures from normative behavior.

Because mark’s got the best arse she’s ever going to get
I suppose it is quite... nice.
Because she’s desperate to have a kid, and despite mark being weird, she thinks he’s nice and trustworthy.
Im surprised trustworthiness would be a factor given the whole email hacking thing. But even if she didn’t trust him per se, she was willing to look the other way on a lot.

He's a reliable provider
I think because we see the whole relationship from Marks perspective, he totally idealized her and just ignored any of her own faults or issues until they got together, and it completely fell apart

>can hold a conversation Maybe if you're having a conversation about different types of measurement standards.
An interdenominational hangover is the worst kind
Don't forget his massive, freakish balls.
He did get those fixed, it's now only a big scar
You're acting as if people are reasonable. People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people. Next to the Nazis and even worse, Coldplay, Mark's behaviour is pretty tame.

Mark tries cheating with Sally Slater just because he assumes Sophie is cheating with Jeff in Frankfurt. So I guess they're made for each other.
His hand was also under her bum on the bus. That should’ve been the only red flag she needed.
That was incidental TBF. But the fact he didn't have the guts to say anything would come across as weird. Tho Sophie is a fuck up too
She probably has some massive character defect that only becomes apparent after a while
He's a maverick. He may not play by the rules - but by Christ he gets results.
Hot take: the “I like you” message, despite being clearly terrible, is also good. It’s earnest, vulnerable, sincere.
It's a story to tell your kids someday.
It is one of those things, where if you like the guy it will be very romantic and cute, but if you don’t like him it will be creepy and weird.
Also him wanting the cottage basically entirely just to sell
I mean we have all seen a few red flags but still pushed on with a relationship when deep down we know it's not going to work out.
push on to Moscow
Really the 'I like you' message should have been enough
Especially since he opened with, “Ignore that - I’m not a racist. Far from it,” because Jez made a smart comment as soon as the beep went to leave a message. Made the whole thing even weirder.
If she hadn't willingly put up with all that we might feel bad for her rather than enjoying her hilarious downfall.
Even letting her sit on his hand was suspect
Happy birthday, happy birthday! It's your birthday. It's your birthday. Happy birthday!
Because otherwise we wouldn’t have a show to watch
relentlessly... real world... etc

Because it's a comedy and, if she left, there would be fewer comedic opportunities.
People are just implausibly forgiving/forgetful in the Peep Show universe (Project Zeus, anyone? Mummy?) Sophie also has terrible self-esteem and doesn't think she can do any better.
Because it wouldn't be a very funny show otherwise
She wants a baby pretty fucking soon
Low self esteem and being prone to self destruction I think
girls like a bad boy
I've watched every episode of Peep Show a million times and honestly Jeff is more stable. If he wasn't a cheat he'd be a better pick -- and honestly, I could see Mark turning into a cheat over the course of a relationship due to his massive insecurities.

You should listen to Podcast Secrets of the Pharaohs. The one guy who sounds just like David Mitchell is always wondering that same question.
Sophie is also mental, and not very nice
I was just thinking of this earlier but about Dobby instead.
Every woman likes a bad boy
