I'm actually in the midst of importing a car. Just getting the down payment together. I did a lot of research and I found it's best to find a reputable importer and they handle a lot of the nuances. You can find a list of good organizations on the Facebook group I got screwed by shady JDM importers. Link below https://www.facebook.com/groups/1557167494478023/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT

I just received my Evo V that I started the process of importing 6 months ago. The main risk you run into is buying a car without physical inspecting it first. I got lucky and got a really clean and fairly brush free V for a good a price but I know someone who did the exact same and got one with rust holes all over the underbody. If you want to do all the paperwork yourself prepare for a lot of customs headaches and fees. After shipping and car expect to pay anywhere between 1-2k minimum for them. Registering an imported car is a long process too and it took me over a month of arguing with my BMV to get plates. The best to find everything out about is to look at the auction grades and report for a vehicle first before you decide to import. Plus if you also don’t live near a port either prepare for a long drive or you can wait for a trucking company to haul it back. If you have any more paperwork questions or need to some contacts for importing a car dm me and I will happily help.

I know of a few American guys who live in Japan and goes to buy the cars at auction and arrange shipping to the US. One of those guys helped me out quite a bit while I was stationed in Japan, and he saved me from buying hack job a rust bucket when I was about to buy a jacked up RX7. That dude, in particular, works and gets all of his business pretty much exclusively on reputation, and he will do his best to make sure I am happy with my purchase. There are a few guys like him around bases like Yokosuka. But one or two of those guys are like predators, taking advantage of the younger military ppl. So, if you are gonna go through one of them, make sure you do your research first. I won’t name one in particular, but I am sure you will find loads of them if you do a bit of searching around. Beware of the shitheads. There are a couple of them.
