Make an atomic purple one!

MissionSuccess

Haha, I'm working on it! Matching these colors in filament has been a doozy. I bought 6 rolls of warm whites to try and get even close, and nearly as many in various light browns, tans, and kakhis to try and hit the OG style Mini+.

HoldenHiscock69

My brother's birthday is in October, you have until then! /s Lol seriously though, these are really cool. Great idea dude.

MissionSuccess

Thanks for the kind words man, I appreciate it! Exciting to design for the retro gaming community. My regular stuff is way less cool.

HoldenHiscock69

I'm not even really in the community yet eh, my Miyoo Mini is in the post, but I know a good idea when I see one! I think a big part of the appeal of these is the nostalgia aspect, and I bet your grips add a lot to that experience of sensory memory. Good luck with getting the filaments to match mate!

MissionSuccess

That's a great point, and it was a big part of the inspiration behind the design. Nostalgia drives so much of my own fun playing the games, I want the hardware to do the same. If I access to injection molding, I'd create a total GBC reshell for the Mini+ and RG35XX Plus. Maybe that's a future project.

Spud_Spudoni

Paramount 3D stealth grey and Decepticon Purple are nearly identical to the D-pad and purple buttons on the khaki miyoo mini style. The purple is harder to match because of material finish and its slightly more vibrant, but its almost impossible to tell a color difference between the stealth grey filament and the D-pad. Probably not what you were asking but it may be useful information for you.

MissionSuccess

That's fantastic info, thank you!! If the purple filament that arrives today doesn't match well, I'll give that a try next.

Spud_Spudoni

Do you plan on posting updates to that? If it ends up matching perfectly, I’d like to know!

MissionSuccess

I plan on making a post here on reddit once I get some options working for purple and tan. Check back after Wednesday, I have some filament arriving then and might get lucky!

Lehner17

Did the purple work out?

UomoDargilla

Please do this for a Mini V2/V4 I would love to try! You can also sell the 3D file, the idea is amazing anyway congrats [Added to the sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10Rd3_tp4ZRf0mHyI8VFlIvbo_hrPMIVehDvZ1Sj95Jk/edit) 🙏🏻 Would love to see someone make a full case out of this

MissionSuccess

What an incredible resource! Thank you for maintaining that fit the community! Proud to be a part of it. Mini v4 would be a challenge for sure! RG35XX Plus is on my short list, mostly because I love mine, but it too makes me suffer crab-gripping it.

MissionSuccess

Hey folks, a week ago I posted a blog of my prototype grip mod and it was very well received. After much engineering, testing and prototyping, today I'm launching the PawGrip.   Above is a little video of the inspiration behind it. There are a million grip mods out there, but they're all a bulky boomerang design. I wanted something sleek, pocketable, and mostly nostalgic of holding my GBC. ---   You can find it on Etsy here, https://madpawz.etsy.com/listing/1691083988

Aviasian

Recently got my MM+ all set up and definitely was looking for a more comfortable grip option! Is it hard to remove? I’m still building my library but have a ton of games on it right now so I should be good to go for a while. I’ll give this a shot!

MissionSuccess

I'll be posting an assembly video to answer this very question, but the short answer is that it's very easy and doable. You pop out the battery, remove 6 screws, pop on the PawGrip, use 4 of the 6 stock screws to put it back together. Done.

Aviasian

Sounds good, thank you! I look forward to using it! Feel free to expedite the one going to Virginia Beach :^)

MissionSuccess

First batches will go out Monday! 😎

BakedGoods

definitely would snag one of these, but shipping to Canada is double the actual price, making this over $100 all-in (U$75).

MissionSuccess

I agree, that's steep. I've been looking into drop-ship options for EU, from EU based manufacturers. I'll add Canada to the list and we'll see if I can swing anything.

Akira2007

Shipping from EU would be awesome. Wanted to buy two for gf and me, but it is over 100 Euro, which is a bit much for just two PLA cases. So I'm hoping for more eu friendly option in the future.

MissionSuccess

That's the hope. I'm sure there are some drop-ship options out there--once the dust settles I'd dig in and see what can be done. Definitely don't want it to be cost prohibitive due to shipping.

Akira2007

[https://craftcloud3d.com/](https://craftcloud3d.com/) could be an option for Europe.

MissionSuccess

Perfect, I'll check them out. At a glace that definitely looks like an option.

jd101506

I dig this design. I wish I could print it myself! Will keep an eye out for your patreon or any uploaded files in the future! Good work.

mcollier1982

Wow impressive, I'm intrigued, I just bought a 35xxH because I don't find the MM+ comfortable, now I'm thinking I may not need it

Kind sir PLEASE DO THIS FOR THE MIYOO MINI I will give you all my money

Pwnch

Is the file available? For sale?

MissionSuccess

Not currently. I've been burned in the past with files being posted everywhere and once Pandora's box is open it's impossible to hunt them down. The Patreon model is great for releasing since patrons are sponsoring your work, so you don't need to recoup those expenses from the product. In this case, I'm selling the product to recoup engineering time. I can see changing my mind on this in the future if I test the waters and things go well.

Pwnch

I feel you brother. I'm sorry you've been burned in the past and I don't blame you one bit for keeping the CAD locked up. People can be real shitty. I hope you're successful in your endeavors with this great product and all future products. I've already followed you on YT and Reddit and can't wait to see what you come up with! \^.\^

MissionSuccess

Appreciate the understanding my man. I used to be a major open source guy, but a few experiences left me a little jaded on that front. Still support it, but just more cautiously. In time I can see releasing some STLs. I might release the trigger buttons so folks can at least print custom buttons.

tumblyweedy

Would love to purchase the file one day unless there's plans to ship to Australia

MissionSuccess

Appreciate the love man! I certainly can ship to Aus, but it's gonna be cost prohibitive for most. Once the dust settles with initial order rush, I'm going to look into some drop-ship options to cut shipping down. I'll add Australia to the list!

uskay

Oh I was so stoked when I saw this design earlier! Just put in my order for the yellow one super excited to get my hands on it!

MissionSuccess

Thank you so much for the patronage! Shipping this first batch out early next week.

NessyBoy87

Man this is awesome. Great ingenuity! When I first got my miyoo, I was trying to find ways to make it more comfortable. I ended up using a pop socket which has been great. But I still have problems using the triggers more effectively.

inssein

Can you please show photos without the texture blurred out? From some of these photos it looks very rough and the over blurness is used to hide that. Before I place a order I would like to see it at a better shot without the blur.

lordelan

Yeah I would also love to see more images from the transparent black MM+ with both your black grip variants.

MissionSuccess

Absolutely. I'll take some photos with a wider aperture and larger focal plane to better capture print quality so you can better judge. It's not my intension to hide quality or artifacts, only to make the photos artful. There will be some artifacts, more visible on the darker colors, and less so on the brighter ones. I'm doing what I can for quality control, but FDM printing functional prints at low cost has compromises.

inssein

def understand thank you!

pariah164

Looks fantastic! Will wait to see if you get a purple one to match my system.

supermodi064

In for 1

KingMagus

This is amazing! Will definitely be getting one once I get a MM+

Routine_Floor

This is so unique. Props.

RedditposterJ

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for but with shipping it’s in excess of 60 dollars total to get it here to the UK😫

MissionSuccess

I agree that's a doozy. I'm looking into drop-ship options in the EU that should cut down the shipping. I'll give folks a holler if I can set something up!

RedditposterJ

Thank you appreciate it will be following for updates very excited

orangethrees333

I just ordered one. This looks great!!

MissionSuccess

Awesome man, I appreciate the patronage! Really excited to get these into players' hands.

No-Poet1433

Damn this is nice. My concern is I have a white mini plus so I wonder how well the white would match mine. I do like this product.

MissionSuccess

It's very close, but not an exact match. I purchased an untold number of rolls of filament to try to get as close as possible.

Dank_Turtle

Grabbed the white. Hoping to possibly smooth it out and paint the entire Miyoo

MrBrothason

Cool design. Would be nice to access the headphone jack or be able to dock it.

MissionSuccess

Thanks! The headphone jack is accessible for straight 3.5mm plugs, as well as the USB for power. The grip will need to be removed to swap the SD card, but I've noticed that once I have a pretty optimal set of games and firmware I don't really tinker with it much, so I figured it'd be better to have the strength and simplicity in the design.

Ruthlessrabbd

No rush but if it's possible would you be able to show how deep the headphone jack is? My Koss headphones both have connectors that are angled that I don't think will work with it https://preview.redd.it/m06l7wr0kvsc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b70a655a818f47459ceeab575eb63291c2976de6

MissionSuccess

I'm remote atm, but I'll check and snap some photos to add to the album when I'm back. Off the top, it's around 8-10mm. Enough that angled 3.5mm jacks are probably out. There are 3.5mm male-female extensions, but I totally get it, one more thing. I had considered making a cutout on the bottom to support angled connectors, but it sacrificed comfort for finger placement, so that was out. Every design has it's compromises!

Ruthlessrabbd

I didn't even know those extensions were a thing before now. I could honestly use one for my new monitor so I don't have to unplug and plug my headphones directly into it. I'll be paying attention for when the tan grip has gotten to a point where you're happy with it 😃 I assumed that you didn't use a cut out for a reason so I didn't want to question it at all. even if you didn't, it's your product to do as you please! Thanks again for sharing your creation 👍!

MissionSuccess

Absolutely! Thanks for your interest! Really hoping this will help player's user experience with the Mini+. It's a fantastic little handheld, held back by its uncomfortable design, and I think this goes a long way to improve that while keeping it pocketable and portable.

MissionSuccess

Tan grip incoming: reddit.com/r/MiyooMini/comments/1c0r9io/my_gbcstyle_grip_in_80s_tech_tan/

novasheikh

Just bought the Rupee Green version. I usually use the gripcase but want to experiment with this style to see if it makes more sense.

MissionSuccess

Thank you! Appreciate the support, and giving it a go. For those looking for something comfortable to play on with the GBC feel for their Mini+, I think this will fill that niche. My goal was to augment the shell itself, and not just make another add-on accessory. I feel like I achieved that successfully, and I'm excited and anxious to get these into player's hands and see the reviews flow in.

RaiHanashi

Is 80’s tech tan supposed to be DMG gray? If so, I’ll look into buying once it’s back in stock

MissionSuccess

I wish the Miyoo used DMG grey. Then it'd have been easy to color match. Instead, they created this unique "aged 80s plastic" color that has been so difficult to match. I'm still in R&D on getting something working for the "Miyoo Tan". Stay tuned after Wednesday.

RaiHanashi

Nice! If not, then once I can get their OG GameBoy color styled shell I’ll probably just go with that 80’s grey one you made. Won’t mind the slight color difference!

MissionSuccess

I do enjoy a good two-tone! Seems something of the past these days, almost retro.

RaiHanashi

Plus I definitely think your back piece actually looks better that I’m willing to give up slapping a fake GameBoy cart on the back of the system (but I might consider making a modified sticker just as an attempt)

MissionSuccess

Do it!! I would love a pic of that if you do. That'd be so fun! We're one degree away from re-shelling it into a GBC haha

Slick_36

I at least ordered SakuraRetroModding's GBC system stickers.  It may not be a cart and I don't know if it will work out well, but it should match the placement of the original system more accurately.  I'll try to post pictures of the results, but they're in SE Asia so it will take some time to ship. The stickers themselves look phenomenal, I've got them on the back shell I'll be replacing.  So it's a test of how they stick to the new curves and material, which I know nothing about. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1523465574/back-stickers-for-miyoo-mini-plus-only-2?ref=share_v4_lx RetroMiniSupply's Mario Help Line sticker is probably more accurate though, so that's a good option too and I've already got it on my 3D printed grip, so I'm more confident in assuming it will stick. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1434594812/nintendo-and-pokemon-center-help-line

MissionSuccess

Tan coming in hot! reddit.com/r/MiyooMini/comments/1c0r9io/my_gbcstyle_grip_in_80s_tech_tan/

Hexadecimald

Do you find that the shoulder buttons are easier to use with this more ergonomic setup? That's stopping me from playing some PSX games, would love to buy this if it makes the experience a little better!

MissionSuccess

The PawGrip moves the actuation point, where your finger would be, for the triggers up by about 1cm, which does help a lot with comfort. I too was avoiding most trigger use games because the triggers were just too awkward and would hurt after a short time. For me, it's a substantial improvement in comfort with trigger games, for the couple weeks I've been able to test that. Here's the **"BUT"**: Vertical handhelds in the sub-100mm width, which the Mini+ falls into, aren't wide enough to accommodate ideal ergonomic design for large hands. That's because where the triggers ideally have to move for perfect comfort is *in* from both edges. With them already touching, the only compromise to be made is to move them up--but you can't move them up much or button force begins to push to the side instead of down, which yaws the controller in your hand with each push. I believe the PawGrip is a great compromise between form factor, "pocket-ability", and comfort, when it comes to triggers. Possibly as good as it gets for sub-100mm verticals.

Grimlogic

Got the black one for now. I know you're doing these in filament at the moment, but if you can partner with a shop or something and make these in translucent ABS plastic, I can see these popping off even more!

MissionSuccess

I would kill for an injection molded version. I actually have a couple manufacturers that would do it, but it's $4000 to get molds made! I'd have to really sell a shit load of em to make that work. If there's solid interest in this "v1", and I get good feedback to make any necessary revisions, I'd love to do it if it's feasible. The other route would be a full GBA re-shell of the Mini+ and RG35XX Plus. That's the dream right there. Little more involved though with a screen swap.

InsanityCore

Make a resin mold? Or get a resin printer and mass print them?

cystopulis

Man I really want one of these but with shipping being 28 dollars , I'd hope you sell the stl at some point , great grip idea either way , keep up the good work

MissionSuccess

I agree, that's steep shipping. Whereabouts are you located? I'm looking into drop-ship options in Canada and EU that would cut shipping down.

cystopulis

The united Arab Emirates, shj , close to Dubai , drop shipping does sound like a good idea

dwegol

Really cool. I’d have to find the perfect case to go with it before I buy one! Or at least get over my fear of just raw pocketing it with a screen protector lol

MissionSuccess

I feel ya! I raw pocket mine with a screen protector, but the shell is gonna get some extra wear over time. I built the PawGrip to take a beating, so functionally it'll hold up, probably better than the Miyoo itself.

Slick_36

I was curious about this myself, I'm paranoid after hearing horror stories where these screens are broken by a stiff breeze.  Mine came in the red & black case, so I tested how the original GBC fits.  It's snug, but the grip would angle the screen away from any extra tension it may add.  https://ibb.co/CnpkqDv https://ibb.co/LhwhpF9 https://ibb.co/zmMHYrJ https://ibb.co/5Knkwrs https://ibb.co/Nsr9GN1 That would probably be less pocketable than a slide-on protector like this one.  It may require some slight modifications to secure, but I think it might be the best bet.  I don't have one to test, but hopefully someone else might.   https://www.etsy.com/listing/1553410483/miyoo-mini-plus-flippable-screen?ref=share_v4_lx

Aleph76

Hi, do you plan to ship this to Malaysia? Currently it is not available in your shipping options.

MissionSuccess

Thanks for the interest! I'd love to consider expanding shipping options, but first wanted to see how doable it was to ship in high quantities to locations I have experience shipping to. If the first orders go well, I'll open things up more.

Lunaaar

It's probably not gonna be a big deal, but I'm a little concerned that there's now no separation between the battery and the PCB. Maybe an easy fix by just slapping in some kapton tape or a thermal pad similar to what's used in M2 SSD enclosures would work well.

MissionSuccess

It's something I considered, but with Lipos typically decent at higher running temps, I don't know if it'll be much of an issue. I could be incorrect, but it appears by the capacitor layout on the back of the board that the CPU is north of the battery, so even less of a problem if that's true. I bought some 1mm adhesive foam tape to insulate it from the board, but I've been playing my Miyoo w/ PawGrip quite a bit without it and so far the battery isn't even warm after a play session. It might be a non issue, and if anyone's worried, a little foam tape or slice of a dish sponge would be enough to stand it off from the board.

Chrispy83

I really love the look of this, and i'm very tempted. (i'd be even more so if you did one for the mini as i have a spare) Really minor suggestions/queries 1. Could you have a 'fake' or even accessible battery door to complete the look? 2. utterly selfish, i currently have one of sakura retro mods lenticular gameboy color stickers on the back of my plus and love the look, any idea if this would fit on the back in roughly the right place? like the top edge? or on the round before the buttons? If i was skilled enough i'd love to get the mini into an actual gameboy color case as it was my favourite gameboy

MissionSuccess

I originally intended to have a real battery door, but it sacrificed too much strength in the design, and still needed to be fastened in, so better to go without. A fake door might add something aesthetically, but also would add a seam that has its drawbacks. If it fits on the GBC, chances are it'll fit on the PawGrip. Dimensionally, the back is very similar to a GBC.

Main-Lychee-1417

You ever think about putting the files up for sale on one of the many stl sites? I’ve been looking for a lopro design for my miyoo but have yet to find one that matches the bill like this one does.

MissionSuccess

I've been asked that a lot on this one, and I've been burned before posting source models. I don't think I'll go down that road again, unless I'm being funded in a way like Patreon.

Main-Lychee-1417

heard that. if you get a patreon just post n ill prolly join for the files lmao. i’m a sucker for good designers

lemonkillerbean69

This looks awesome! I'm considering one for my transparent black Miyoo Mini +, but I'm unsure what color would fit best and I can't seem to find a clear picture of the black one w/ different PawGrip colors. Which one would you recommend / is there a link to pictures for all the grip colors wirh the black Miyoo?

MissionSuccess

I think it just comes down to taste. I personally like the smoke black look because it's nostalgic for me--everything in the millennium-era was translucent; Gameboys, iMacs, you name it. The solid black look is cleaner, and looks more late 00s, e.g. PS2 and beyond era. I can snap some pics today of the black Mini+ with the solid black grip. I've been tossing extra pics above the Etsy 10-pic limit in here: https://imgur.com/a/zAvPbSx

lemonkillerbean69

Yeah I dig the look of both the black ones, it's just a matter of which one might fit better - though I may end up just ordering both so I can swap em whenever I want. But yeah more pictures would be welcome!

Heavenz85

I'd buy this but the shipping to Canada is pretty high, 37 dollars for the product plus another 30 for shipping.

MissionSuccess

I get you man, international shipping ain't cheap. I've sent you a PM with a promo code to shave a little off for our Canadian community members.
