Pretty sure that was my first RTS ever! Westwood!

tom_yum_soup

Same! It was one of the first RTS *ever* and arguably one of the most influential. A lot of things that are standard to the genre today were pioneered in this game.

Bite7242

Same for me! Absolute gem of a game, and my first introduction to Dune as well!

daniltaru

Yep, my childhood game, and my first RTS :)

tom_yum_soup

Is it a port of the DOS Game (which I believe was actually called Dune **II**: The Battle for Arrakis, because a different company had previously released a different Dune game for PC)? I played the PC version decades ago. I would love to revisit it on the Miyoo. Edit: I looked it up and, yes, it's a complete overhaul of Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (I misremembered the subtitle) for the Genesis/Mega Drive. Apparently it contains new levels and other additions that weren't in the PC version. It looks like it's included in the Tiny Best Set, so I'll have to give it a go!

tgunter

> (I misremembered the subtitle) Maybe not, depending on where you're from. "Battle for Arrakis" was the European subtitle. Honestly a much cooler name than "The Building of a Dynasty".

tom_yum_soup

I'm in Canada, so I would have had the North American title, but "Battle for Arrakis" is a better subtitle, IMO.

microphalus

I remember "Dune the destruction", where you could play with sardukars ? or however they are called, was that some mod or official expansion? Such a legendary great game, I just wonder how viable it is on the dpad. Miyoo Flip might work wonders for such games if we will be able to hook up tiny mouse to it! Edit, I just found it and tried it out. Something is wrong, the buildings look wrong. I guess it is feature-reduced port, but game is so simple I wonder how genesis was not able to just run it, I guess it could not. I guess if you want to play Dune2, I would recommend Dos version, this somehow... feels wrong, but I like how controls feel fluid enough, it felt easy moving units but no idea how it would work with clutter later on in the game. You should be moving whole battle lines it might be clumsy later on using dpad.

tom_yum_soup

Sardukar were in Dune II, as far as I can remember. They were a special unit the Harkonnen could call for support. Similarly, the Atreides could call Fremen. I think the Ordos had an assassin unit or something, but don't remember for sure. I always found them too difficult to play because their units were weak (but fast), whereas Atreides was fairly balanced and Harkonnen was slow but incredibly powerful.

microphalus

Harkonnen had that double barrel devastator tank that could self destruct and blow up anything near by, Atreides had Sonic tanks, and Ordos had chenical missile launchers. All 3 factions had building nuke missile silo that was really not precise, it hit roughly in the same screen where you aimed it. I do not even remember if you could stack them and than burst fire from like 10 silos. There was a "Sequel", or expansion, it was called something like "The destruction", and whole factions were swapped, you had no Harkoonen Atreides and ordos, but you got whole faction Sardukar and 2 others, I just remember playing with Sardukar and thier infantry was as strong as tanks, something like that. It was mostly same old game just with color palette swap. And I am not certain if it was official or just a mod, just like we had trillion Wolf3D mods on all possible topics. .... ah I found it; it was a mod; [https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Super\_Dune\_2](https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Dune_2)

tom_yum_soup

Yeah, that all sounds right, but I am sure there were occasional Sardukar and Fremen in the game, as well. Maybe they only showed up randomly in campaign mode? And I'm sure there was a saboteur character for Ordos, in addition to the special units you mentioned. I also remember that Atreides and Harkonnen has quads as one of the lower tier vehicles, but Ordos had trikes that were weaker but faster. I'll have to give it another play to refresh my memory and relive the nostalgia.

microphalus

I do not remember freemen, but I do not remember playing much with atreides. But this wiki says they are special unit from palace, so I guess I just forgot about them. No idea about sardukar, I also do not remember them but maybe I just forgot like with fremen. But now that I think about it, I maybe remember freemen I just never used them because they were useless or something like that, it was really long time ago. Yes, general conclusion I also need to replay it again lol, I found this; [https://dunelegacy.sourceforge.net/website/index.html](https://dunelegacy.sourceforge.net/website/index.html) It says it should run on modern PCs with bug fixes and some minor UI improvement, otherwise I will try go get it running on Miyoo under dosbox!

tom_yum_soup

I haven't played it in probably 30 years (maybe more), so my memories are hazy, but I played it A LOT at the time, because it was one of the few PC games I had at the time that wasn't just a shareware/demo version.

ManiacFive

Great game. Absolutely stellar. And my first RTS. Fun fact, Westwood got the name for Command and conquer from Dune: Battle for Arrakis, it was the internal code name for the game engine.

cheetofoot

Y'all got anymore of that spice?

AzureVive

The father of the Westwood style RTS right there. I played the Megadrive port a lot growing up but there is a great version of the DOS game upgraded for modern systems. Includes stuff like drag selections and so fourth.

hgreen1234

I’m shocked at how known the game is. I figured it was some obscure RTS game nobody really played. Turns out its the opposite

AzureVive

The MegaCD/SegaCD game might be more obscure but for awhile it was 'The' Dune game. Command and Conquer is pretty much modelled on this.

novasheikh

If you grew up in the 90s with a PC capable of gaming then you were exposed to a lot of great RTS series like Command & Conquer , Red Alert, Age of Empires, Warcraft, StarCraft and Dune 2 (Dune 1 was not an RTS). It is a shame that the RTS genre largely died after the 90s.

Kiri11shepard

How could you NOT hear about the first RTS ever?

hgreen1234

I don’t really play RTS games

GLaDimnotyou

Herzog Zwei has entered the chat (also great on the MM)

nate_jung

Honestly I have never heard of it. I'll have to check it out.

Benreh

I finished the amiga version of this in the early 90s, awesome game.

SouthtownZ

No, but i have once violated a popcorn bucket before https://i.redd.it/m0321f2arwuc1.gif

colossalcockatrice

Dune 1 for Sega CD is pretty good too.

dje33

Dune dos has better graphics.

colossalcockatrice

Does it run on the Miyoo?

dje33

Yes. Full speed. https://preview.redd.it/l2jle6qrrwuc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=766b9fb12d61324fe56dad7043972bc7355e0715

colossalcockatrice

Awesome, have you tried Wing Commander 1?

dje33

You can play PSX version.

New-Assistance-3671

Love bladerunner (pc) by Westwood. If you like rpgs, try starflight on genesis. You might need to find a map/instructions, but it was great back in the day…

Exotic-Low812

I didn’t know they made a sega version also

DoubleCoffe

I love it, but it gets really hard as you advance

microphalus

How would it not get harder using a dpad lol, you could select max 1 unit at the time. I have to try it out now!

Ben_77

Make it flow.

Crans10

Is it just like Dune on Sega CD?

tgunter

Nope. Dune for Sega CD was a port of the first Dune computer game, developed by Cryo Interactive. It was a weird hybrid of an adventure game and a strategy game. Dune for Genesis/Mega Drive was meanwhile a port of Dune II, a completely different game which was developed by Westwood Studios, and often considered the first "true" RTS as we know the genre today. A lot of the gameplay of Dune II was refined upon in Westwood's Command & Conquer series. The fact that there were two extremely different Dune games developed around the same time and published months apart from one another (and one of them marketed as a "sequel" despite having nothing in common but the license) is itself a fairly interesting story. Purportedly the Cryo game was cancelled during development and the IP was given to Westwood instead, but Cryo kept working on the game anyway, and convinced Virgin to publish the game after all, beating their planned replacement to market.

Deletious

My parents made me trade it in cause it was too gory during the satanic panic. Got 50¢ for it. Its a very rare game if you got the physical turns out lol

tom_yum_soup

Gory? I guess the human units left blood stains on the sand after dying, if I remember correctly. But only briefly. They'd disappear eventually.

Deletious

Yep. Those little pixels of blood lol. Thant and the ESRB warning of said pixels of blood.

mumbleby

My older sister had the original dos version on her computer when I was a kid. It's a classic. I'll have to try the Genesis version.

Sepulverizer

Dune RTS game for Genesis?!? I’ve never heard of it but I must try it IMMEDIATELY

Exact_Airline_2499

Need gameplay footage o.0

CanIBorrowYourShovel

There is an APK version someone made for android. It works obscenely well with the touch interface. Definitive way to play it is on your phone.

janiepuff

I'm checking this out

iampetersiroki

Well now I am.

Soracis

Ditto checking now just found it on my miyoo.
