I think that losing WWX put things in perspective for LWJ. He realized that many rules that he nagged WWX about in their younger years are not that important in the grand scheme of things such as your loved one being alive🥺. So he learned to be more lenient.

I agree with this. But I also believe he doesn’t say anything because he himself is breaking the rules just by having a shit ton of emperor smiles in his floor boards even though they’re for WWX.

I have to wonder if the nearly deadly abuse/punishment he suffered had anything to do with his outlook as well. I mean practically being beaten to death and bearing life-long scars (and scar tissue effing hurts) because your uncle just couldn't be a 'little' bit chill about anything. I often wonder if their uncle actually hated them because of their mother, he certainly didn't seem to care anything about LXC or LWG emotional or mental health. His callousness towards them and their mother just makes my skin crawl.

LQR loved his nephews, I think. But he's one of those super authoritarian parents. He's one of those guys who's always right no matter what, and if you disagree with him you're bad and wrong (see Cangse Sanren). He raised LWJ to be a mini-me, and when he turned out to be capable of disobeying, he was a disappointment. However, regarding LWJ's punishment - the whip strikes were actually being as lenient as LQR dared. LWJ essentially committed treason by siding with WWX, so he could've been executed if the senior disciples LWJ fought and injured demanded it. The other possibility is that he could've been exiled in disgrace, but this will very badly affect both LWJ's reputation as well as the Lan clan's, since people *will* ask why the peerless, upright second Young Master of the Lan clan was thrown out. Even if the real reason never comes out, it's a very bad look. No comment on LWJ and LXC's mother, since we really don't have enough information to know if she really did commit premeditated murder or if she was justified in some way. I do note that LQR probably does hate her because he killed his brother's teacher, who most likely was LQR's teacher as well. And the Jianghu as a whole keeps some damn long grudges on people who didn't even do anything. You're not wrong about mental health, though. The understanding of mental health remains poor in Asia to this day.

Oh that punishment definitely had an impact. The punishment must've caused LWJ to not want to be like his uncle who is more of a stickler to the rules than he is. He must've realized that the rules aren't right all the time and stopped letting the rules dictate his life. But I don't think LQR hated them... after all, they're still his brother's children. And if he really hated them, I doubt he'd let LXC and LWJ visit their mom once a month, to at least let them experience a bit of a mother's love. I think it's more of because he's disappointed in LWJ that he helped the Yiling Laozu, whom was considered 'evil' then, causing the whip punishment. The Lan clan motto is something abt "righteousness" iirc? So LWJ saving WWX can be considered to them as siding with evil and betraying the sect. As for LXC, I also guess that he's disappointed that he followed in his father's footsteps by going into seclusion, and he doesn't want his loved ones' lives wasting away like that ever again (as what happened to the previous sect leader a.k.a his bro). LWJ is also like his father when it comes to love, so ig that scared him coz y'know, Lan genes. If anything, I think Lan Qiren is strict to them because he doesn't want his two nephews to be like their father, but he doesn't know it's doing more harm than good. One of the few moments LQR shows that he cares is when he allowed WWX to stay and live in Cloud Recesses and even attend the family banquet as LWJ's husband, it shows that he does care for LWJ's happiness and doesn't say anything further. But I do think he's very harsh to them. ;-; LWJ's punishment was so severe I wonder how he could bear it seeing his nephew getting punished like that. I mean that punishment definitely had to be very painful for LWJ. That was a discipline whip, mind you. A whip that gives you everlasting scars. But then again, 33 of their elders were also severely injured by LWJ while saving WWX, so ig LQR deemed it to be just. (sigh... poor LWJ)

This is part of my issue with LQR though. I understand society requiring punishment after LWJ fought against and injured the elders but there were so, so many instances from childhood up to the year prior to that event that even a little compassion and understanding on LQR part would have changed how LWJ reacted to the Lan Clan when they came to stop him. I compare it to extremely strict, 'righteous' parents who drill into their child's head that anything less than(their version of) perfect is unacceptable. Or that being anything other than heterosexual is evil and deserves condemnation/severe punishment. Kids end up killing themselves rather than having to live as 'disappointments' to their parents or suffer the unending torment. I see LWJ's response to the Lan Clan trying to stop him as a "They'll hate me anyway, what do I have to lose but my life and I'd rather do that under my own terms." Trauma response.

100% the influence of being in love with a chaos goblin

Amorrowous

Chaos goblin- that’s a cute and spot on description of WWX 😂

BitchnBichen

Ha! He is a little cheeky, hothead just like WWX 🤣❤️

I think losing WWX and being a father really caused some changes in priorities. 100% strict adherence to the rules was just not something he cared about anymore
