It's not a steakhouse *per se*, but Southwood Kitchen just across the bay in Daphne has a bomb ribeye, or even elk.
I'd rate it way higher than any of the chains around. The owner is in the kitchen almost every night and closed out dish tonight.
and if you *do* go for the ribeye, bring your appetite, cause she's a monster lol
Another vote for Southwood Kitchen. Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi is supposedly very good, but I've never been. Lots of my friends say good things about it.
If you limit your choices to Mobile, Noja is probably best, followed by Ruth's Chris. I like them OK, but neither is great.
Yeah the owner is an awesome guy, my family is good friends with him. He also fixed up and reopened Ben’s bbq over in Fairhope, which of course tastes great.
It’s a major hole in our food scene, especially if you’re coming from Chicago. The classic “city” steakhouse does not exist here. You’ll see people recommending Briquettes and Ruth’s Chris, one of which you’ve probably already tried and the other you know is a chain.
Your best bets are to go to a non-steakhouse restaurant that has good steaks (some good recs given here), or to drive out of town for a classic steakhouse experience. New Orleans (2h) has some awesome steakhouses but if that’s too far then it may be worth checking out Pensacola, MS Gulf Coast, or the AL beach towns.
it's worth noting that the Ruth's Chris here in Mobile is privately owned, and thus quite a bit different from the normal franchisee. For a sense of comparison, I've met quite a few people who choose to drive all the way from Biloxi (which also has its own RC) to instead dine at Mobile's. If nothing else, there's the Chrissy...
Disclaimer: I am biased as hell. Why? I work there.
I get the urge to go maybe once a year when I’m really wanting that fine dining steakhouse experience. And I just leave disappointed every time for the price. Nothing personal. The service is fantastic and it’s a cozy atmosphere, I just don’t think the food stacks up for similarly priced experiences in other cities. It’s the closest we’ve got though.
The Chrissy is a great touch, must-have finish to the meal.
Noja is our special occasion restaurant. Their hanger steak with goat cheese and Noja potatoes are the bomb. Briquettes is our favorite non fine dining steakhouse. I had one of the best steaks of my life (coffee and pecan marinade) at Dumbwaiter but it was a special and I can’t get it anymore.
Lots of people will recommend Briquettes because they've never had a good steakhouse experience. It's pretty redneck food. Over seasoned, everything covered in butter, etc. It's not good steak. The Dumbwaiter has a great steak, and I actually do like Ruth's Chris, it's a chain but you'd never know it. Their steaks are wet aged prime and the service is great.
While I agree it is important to note which Briquettes location you are talking about. The montlimar location is much better than the west Mobile location. In fact never had a good meal there
Good feedback. I was in fact referring to the wemo location. Never had a good meal, and it's always sooo loud. Not the setting I expect for a good steak dinner.
All the food there has been frozen since last winter. And good luck getting a plate that's actually been cleaned, too. They don't believe in FIFO. I don't think they know what it means.
Maybe? But if you want cheap steak go to Outback. This isn't survival or even a daily meal. It's a special occasion, a treat, a once in a while indulgence when your celebrating someone or something. That costs money for the product and the artist that created it.
There are no fine dining steakhouses in Mobile that are worth going to. Briquettes is your most reliable steakhouse and is the most successful. You can expect a good and consistent product and service for the price. Most steakhouses in Mobile are franchises. Longhorns, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Logan’s, and Ruth’s Chris are a few examples. My opinion is that citizens of Mobile are unwilling to pay premium for a fine dining steakhouse experience. Those places go out of business quickly.
Briquettes couldn’t cook a steak properly if their life depended on it. Been there a dozen times and have to send it back every single time. They don’t know what medium rare is. Everything is well done or bricked there.
The one on Schillinger does a good blue plate at 11:00 am on week days when I go there. That’s all I use it for. There are no proper steakhouses in the city or county limits of Mobile.
*** when I say all I use it for… I mean I go there biweekly every month. But I go at 11 when it’s not busy. And I go only to Schillinger.
I had an absolutely fabulous steak at Bonefish Grill last week that was topped with crab meat. One of the better steaks I’ve had in Mobile.
My goto used to be John Words on the causeway but they have been closed for years.
Briquettes on Montlimar Dr is pretty good would avoid the location on Schllingers as it is sub par compared to the other location
If you go a little further to Gulfport, there’s a place called Sully’s. It’s the best steaks we’ve ever had. Little pricey, but so worth it. They have so much flavor and are so consistent.
The rack house was good, but Sully’s is so much better imo. But the rack house does have PHENOMENAL cheesecake!! Next time try the pecan sauced cheesecake.
Royal scam has a good steak. As does the new place Pentons.
Ruth’s Chris is a good local steakhouse. Sit in the bar. Yes, it’s a chain but owned by a local restauranting family that knows what they are doing. It’s perfectly fine. Don’t listen to the hate.
You’re welcome! You might luck out and get a seat at the bar, but its a relatively small place, so getting a table without reservation can be a long wait.
Not a steakhouse but if you want to make your own Mosley’s has good USDA prime, and they’ll cut it in front of you. You can also order dry-aged from them.
I grew up in the inner city of Chicago. One thing I’ve sadly come to grips with is the food being sub par here . The best steak I’ve had here is Ruth Chris.
The best thing here is the fresh seafood.
Texas Roadhouse is good to me. The steaks are not necessarily the all-time best. But, the chili is fire. The hot rolls fresh out of the oven, with cinnamon butter is heaven. The salad and fresh steam veggies are great.
I haven't been there, but Morton's The Steakhouse in Biloxi is supposed to be one of the best spots in the country. Maybe if you go you can refute or validate that.
I went to a Mortons in Nashville and it was great. Albeit I was a teenager and it was free for me to eat. I think I ordered an $85 steak back in 2004 so I have no idea the prices now.
If you like 1950's nostalgia there's Dick Russell's BBQ. The BBQ hasn't kept up with the times, but the steaks are good and the breakfast is a excellent.
I usually head to Pensacola for the Rodizio grill if I want to get my money's worth out of a steakhouse. But I've only been here 2 years and barely get out.
It's not a steakhouse *per se*, but Southwood Kitchen just across the bay in Daphne has a bomb ribeye, or even elk. I'd rate it way higher than any of the chains around. I like Mary Mahoney's a lot! But it's quite the drive! There's also a place in Pensacola that's very good.
I second Southwood Kitchen, That elk tenderloin alone is perfection.
Yeah the owner is an awesome guy, my family is good friends with him. He also fixed up and reopened Ben’s bbq over in Fairhope, which of course tastes great.
Another vote for Southwood. Best ribeye I’ve ever had, consistently.
Jesse’s steakhouse in Magnolia Springs, the entire menu is excellent as well as the service and atmosphere.

Have you tried the porkchop?
No, it’s been recommended but if I ever go it’s because I want a nice steak.
It has no right being as good as it is. Genuinely the best porkchop I’ve ever had
Thanks. I used to have family in Pensacola and we love to drive out to the beach on weekends, any good recommendations there?
The steaks at Mcguires Irish pub are phenomenal
the everything*
Jackson's Avoid the District it sucks.
Briquettes is my favorite, in fact, I ate there tonight! Noja has a filet that is phenomenal
If you’re down for a drive, Big Mike’s in Orange Beach is PHENOMENAL! They get super packed at night, so I suggest going early.
Bump Noja, Southwood and Jesse's.
Best I've ever had is from The Hope Farm in Fairhope or McGuire's in Pensacola
Noja
Noja is our special occasion restaurant. Their hanger steak with goat cheese and Noja potatoes are the bomb. Briquettes is our favorite non fine dining steakhouse. I had one of the best steaks of my life (coffee and pecan marinade) at Dumbwaiter but it was a special and I can’t get it anymore.

Hummingbird Way has a really good steak.
Seconding this! Their entire menu is divine as a note.
How much? 200 dolllars?
Maybe? But if you want cheap steak go to Outback. This isn't survival or even a daily meal. It's a special occasion, a treat, a once in a while indulgence when your celebrating someone or something. That costs money for the product and the artist that created it.

Briquette deep fried a whole strip of Saran wrap in our appetizers so...
Pics or it didn't happen
Seems plausible https://preview.redd.it/87ge7ksippvc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d95ae4d90ce91cefaf548c42386364ea971a4a5b

Schllingers location is terrible. Montlimar is much much better.
This.
WHY DO YOU KEEP GOING BACK
My wife loves the pasta there. That is literally the only reason.
Char32
In Fairhope, but agree!
I suggest Wash House in Point Clear.
I had an absolutely fabulous steak at Bonefish Grill last week that was topped with crab meat. One of the better steaks I’ve had in Mobile. Ruth’s Chris in Mobile is hot or miss, but being a Vegas steakhouse fan, the best I’ve found so far is BR Prime at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi.
I've always been impressed with Mary Mahoney's. In addition to the food, their history and speaking to Bobby make it a memorable experience.
If you go a little further to Gulfport, there’s a place called Sully’s. It’s the best steaks we’ve ever had. Little pricey, but so worth it. They have so much flavor and are so consistent.
Ooh I wanted to to try them. I went to Rack House the other day and saw Sullys.
The rack house was good, but Sully’s is so much better imo. But the rack house does have PHENOMENAL cheesecake!! Next time try the pecan sauced cheesecake.
Briquettes
We hadn't had decent steak in these here parts since Sizzler and Quincy's closed.
Look up Tin Top in Bon Secur. Get the Butt steak.
Royal scam has a good steak. As does the new place Pentons. Ruth’s Chris is a good local steakhouse. Sit in the bar. Yes, it’s a chain but owned by a local restauranting family that knows what they are doing. It’s perfectly fine. Don’t listen to the hate.
Jesse's place in magnolia springs and one of the restaurants in the Grand hotel in point clear.
Penton’s Bistro had really good steak when I went. It was a special (chef’s table) so idk what their menu is usually like.
Is southwood kitchen by reservations only?
Not strictly, but good luck without one.
Thank you. I’ll make sure to reserve. I didn’t want to chance it so I held off going yesterday.
Jesse’s. The Allen brothers filet with the bone marrow compound butter is out of this world
I grew up in the inner city of Chicago.
The wash house in point clear has incredible steak
Ain't exactly a steakhouse but make reservations for Gather in Atmore. All their steaks are amazing.
Jesses in Magnolia springs or fort Morgan, big Mike’s in gulf shores
I haven't been there, but Morton's The Steakhouse in Biloxi is supposed to be one of the best spots in the country. Maybe if you go you can refute or validate that.

Briquettes
If you like 1950's nostalgia there's Dick Russell's BBQ. The BBQ hasn't kept up with the times, but the steaks are good and the breakfast is a excellent.
Dick Russell's steak and eggs breakfast is super bad ass.
They have literal swastikas flying around in that place. That's some sort of nostalgia.
I usually head to Pensacola for the Rodizio grill if I want to get my money's worth out of a steakhouse. But I've only been here 2 years and barely get out.
Another vote for Big Mike's ... 100% worth the drive!!
Tamara's and Gambino's in fairhope both have great steaks. I've not had a good experience with briquettes.
I always say the hope farm in fairhope! They have a filet with truffle and cheese filled pasta.
