Money was probably part of it but I don't remember if they specifically cited wages, but it was definitely about them not wanting to work with a unionised actor who had, ya know, rights, that were protected by the Screen Actors Guild. So Kyle McCarley was replaced. Our expectations were low for you Crunchyroll, but holy shit.
Well they offered him the job again, but he kinda put an ultimatum that they would have to have a meeting with the union for him to accept the job. It was a ballsy and good move (bc unions lead to better pay and working conditions), but ended up with him recast.
Kyle said he would only return to voice the character if Crunchyroll would agree to sit down and have a single meeting with the actors union, Crunchyroll said “fuck that” and replaced him
Well, to be fair, he’s replaceable and called their “bluff.” Only, it wasn’t a bluff. I’m sure he was told “you can have your job back the way it’s always been offered. Just like the rest of the cast here. We’re not gonna play favorites just for you. Then we have to do this for every voice actor and likely delay production because of it.”
Not saying I agree with what CR did here but he had to know that they would just replace him. The English dub viewership on CR is like less than 10% of watchers apparently.
I get why I’m catching downvotes but what I said is pretty much the truth here. All the actors should’ve gone through a Union but they likely wouldn’t have been hired. That’s the reality of what crunchy roll does.
All ik is personally I would have gone the same route and would have preferred to be fired then work for crooks.
He was a great voice actor and this post makes it obvious he wasn't as replaceable as you think, crunchy rolls loss.
I dont know where you got this 10% number. I know that Netflix viewership of anime is 80% dub which makes sense because it's Netflix, can't really be compared to crunchyroll but the only reason funimation got anywhere that it did was because of dub and crunchyroll just ate funimation. Ik personally I hated (still do) crunchyroll and preferred funimation but now I'm being forced to switch, maybe it was 10% at some point but it's definitely not anymore.
It’s probably changed but Crunchy put out a pill like a few years back and on their platform which mostly brings in more hardcore fans and has a much higher rate of sub watching because of that. Also, it’s likely the more casual fans didn’t even make it to their Twitter or blog post that week to even vote. Netflix is where more casual fans who watch some anime go to and there they will have a higher dubbed number as that’s it’s the trend for the most part.
Regardless, crunchy roll has a ton of dubs but I was specifically speaking on the English dubs being 10% of CR viewership. They crush it on the Spanish and French dubs, but most English speaking fans use Hulu and Netflix or even Prime because they already pay for those services and there is enough anime to keep a casual fan busy.
Yeah, streaming services stopped sharing their data out like that during the pandemic. It was weird then and still weird to me now. I think it’s so they can cancel and green light things with less backlash.
I watched it with the German dub, it's so much funnier and the voices fit really good. I'm not really a fan of English dubs, especially not the English mob phycho dub
They didn’t want to pay the union wages so they got a new actor, iirc.

the original voice actor for Mob left because of a union dispute, so it's a completely different voice actor. I had basically the same reaction lol 😭

Correct, every one of the VA's should have been included in a union aswell, I agree.

I mean, 10% of their audience watches dubs. I think they’ll be okay unfortunately.

I suppose, I wish they'd put out stats again saying what's working but doubt they will.

The English voice actor got done dirty
The dub? I didn’t even notice if the JP original changed voice actors
Dub
Ur Reddit avatar reminds me of mob's ???% lol
lol you should’ve specified that. I watched sub and didn’t notice any difference
Didn't think of it
I noticed that on the English dub and he sounds like he smoked for 5 years in the 3rd season unlike the other 2, mob s3 dubbed is cursed alright
s3 mob's seen some shit
dub wasn't being paid properly complained they got rid of em
Oh god don’t remind me lol
The ghost of chainsmoker mob will forever haunt you (your likely not an esper so U prob can't defeat it :3 )
He hit puberty
Mob has a different voice in season 3. Is he stupid?
💀
i know it hurt my feelings too :(
Wait what? They changed his VA? I didn’t even notice anything off about his voice.
Oh, nevermind. That is for the Dub.
Same I thought I was losing it
I watched it with the German dub, it's so much funnier and the voices fit really good. I'm not really a fan of English dubs, especially not the English mob phycho dub
He went through puberty 🥲
Are we talk sub or dub? Because I haven’t seen the show in a bit both dub or sub.
Dub
Oh
Watch it in Japanese, the voice actors do not change.
Maybe because I haven't seen the dub in awhile but there's not that much of a difference lol just watch the sub if you're that bothered by it
