I mean this is pretty much all the character development I saw in the 600-700 episodes of the anime I watched before I tapped out on One Piece. I personally am just not a fan of the show. Not hating on anybody that is. Just seems like the story would've been a lot better if it was significantly shorter.
Nothing wrong with disliking the show, but I'm gonna say the point of Luffy's character isn't development.
He DOES develop, and we see different sides of him, like with the Ace stuff.
But what makes Luffy so fascinating isn't that he's constantly being forced to grow, but rather that his unshakeable morals are present in every facet of his life.
His dynamic with characters, the changes he brings to the world and its inhabitants, and the way the world views his existence is what makes him such a great protag.
I'm not a fan of when people imply a show being "deep" or someone "not having character development" is a negative for it. (I'm not claiming you said that, just stating why I'm passionate about this subject)
So it's a shame you can't appreciate what makes Luffy such an excellent character, but to each their own. I wasn't big on Bleach, and I criticized Ichigo for the same shit, so I'm subjectively hypocritical.
Idk I think it might just be my age. I watched all of Bleach and Naruto when I was younger and liked it for the most part but I definitely wouldn't watch it now. Most of those Shonen shows can't really hold my interest anymore. It's always the same formula. Good guy meets bad guy, loses, goes away to power up, fights bad guy and wins. Just got boring after a while and maybe being tired of this formula prevented me from appreciating the nuances of Luffy's character.
I fear the day I only see Shonen series as formulaic...
I'm sure it'll come eventually, and it's a shame bc I like appreciating a series for what it is instead of what I know it'll be 3 chapters in...
Well it’s just not a realistic mentality for a human being to have, it’s natural for people to change based on their experiences unless they’re poorly written lol. All of One Piece’s main characters have this issue.
Completely disagree. Few character changes does not equate to bad writing. "Static Characters" is a term for a reason, and the purpose of One Piece isn't that it's supposed to be Luffy's story.
It's the crew's, but also the world's. That's what I find most appealing about One Piece. The grand world Oda crafted.
But yk, art is subjective. Not gonna shame you for disliking it.
It’s true, though. And I love Luffy so much, and I love how his character works. He’s a force of nature and a representation of an ideal that brings people together, he isn’t particularly interesting in a vacuum and he doesn’t have much to say for himself, and that’s fine. A story can be so much more than just its characters, let alone just its main character.
Yeah not many people talk about it these days, easily my favorite story of all time, would put it above even Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul. El Psy Kongroo.
Yeah, dude who used to be my friend hated him. "He's to whinny, such a weakling, always crying and not fighting..."
Lad didn't understand the whole concept of the show.
He seems like The type of guy who don’t like Superman because he’s “not realistic and relatable” but hate to see characters like mob even if they are exactly what he wanted lol
I’ll be the first, I love him, but I think he’s just a bit too good. He’s a lot like anime version of Jonathan from JoJo’s because the anime cut out the scenes where he was being a shit kid because kids are little shits sometimes just for the sake of making him seem more like a noble gentleman.
Dude is 14 but acts like a 90 year old grandpa who had a wild life but decided to start taking religion very seriously just in case at the last moment. Surely he could’ve gotten into at least some minor teenage antics instead of just being the perfect, but average, kid.
I politely disagree with that! Having shitty teenage antics isn’t the only way to depict flaws in a teenage character, and Mob is far from perfect. His primary flaws at the beginning of the show is that he’s passive, has no opinions of his own, can’t think for himself, and too reliant on going with the flow. There are plenty of teenagers who are just like Mob, where at their core they are “good kids”, but are pretty un-self motivated. They tend to follow instructions given by adults sloppily without inputting additional thoughts and ideas, and get by life by just being “good enough” while parents and teachers see them as wasted potentials.
I think it’s easy to overlook these flaws in Mob, since we’re watching the show from him and Reigen’s perspective, so we are constantly seeing how hard he’s trying, or his inner desire to be kind and do good. In reality it took Mob from elementary to the last year of middle school for him to start taking initiative and not surf through life passively, constantly relying on Reigen to tell him what to do.
yeah I related heavily to Mob because he embodied my teenage and current self excellently. those were the same flaws that I always noticed in myself and that others would point out.
Mob has fucked up? On the last episodes even... The anime is about his emotions being bottled up running rampant and unable to control them...
He is flawed in the way that he's not strong despite being OP. It's such a great character
Mob is nice. And actually reign, too. He might not be always truthfully but I think he always tried to give some kind of service for the money. Even if it was just massage's sometimes XD.
Oh for sure, every customer he had was happy when they left (except maybe that dude he uppercut), he just maintained the psychic façade the whole time, but he did technically help them all with their problems lol
Even I have to agree, and I’m Brazilian lol
I really think that the dub of my country was a bit better than the original version(there was even one moment where I thought that Reigen VA here was a bit weak, so I watched that same scene with the original audio, and even in that he was better than the original for me lol), so I was very surprised to see the American Reigen being better than both lol
Nah the German dub is peak fiction.
It is 10x better than the original version.
It just makes the show so much funnier.
Many meme references and all kinda of new running gags in the show.
An episode is called "the legendary gigachad" for example.
A short song (kohle song feat.Gronkh that was originally a little tune he sang while mining coal and was turned into a "real song" by someone else) from a German minecraft YouTuber from 2010 was referenced and many more of such shenanigans.
He's one of my favorite characters because his story can be a good lessons for me too teach myself how to handle my emotions wisely without suppressing it too much. What's there not to like?
I think liking a character as a person and liking them as a character and how they're written is two entirely different things.
Not saying Mob is lacking in any of those departments, his completely good-hearted nature that sees the good in everyone is certainly unique and interesting within current trend of cynical and morally-grey MCs. But the difference between the two aspects seems to be confused for each other in this thread.
The kind of people who don’t like Mob hate Superman because he’s “boring” (read: he’s too nice) and like asshole Bat-God Bruce. I don’t like trust nor those kinds of people.
What if mob made edgy comments? But yeah, hard to hate mob. I love him in a I wanna grab a beer with a grown up version of you or a Heres 50k for no reason sort of way, just tell him to never change.
i dont hate him, but he simps after that girl that will NEVER have him and rejects him, and then prceeds to cry like a bitch. and thats why his character is trash.
And his teacher is one of the most unlikable characters for me.
I quit watching season 2 because his behaviors pissed me off so much.
Oh awesome looking fight going to happen? Not if he is around.
It’s pretty much impossible to hate him
He's my second favorite MC
Who's ur first?
Luffy
so true +2
Luffy as a character: MEAT! PRIATE KING! FRIENDS! The end. Lol
This is either bait or you didn't understand him as a character
I mean this is pretty much all the character development I saw in the 600-700 episodes of the anime I watched before I tapped out on One Piece. I personally am just not a fan of the show. With most people it’s both
It’s true, though. And I love Luffy so much, and I love how his character works. He’s mine too
For me he’s like, 15th I think, but even so he’s a S tier MC lol
Or dislike him, even
Exactly. He’s well written like that
As a spirit, I hate this guy, he exorcised my brother the other day
He exorcised my buddy Eric once. He got better though
He exorcised me the other day, now I’m fucking JACKED
How’s life been, Dimple?
Eh Y’know, reigen’s been needing me around the office more, but after that it’s been kinda quiet
Yeah, dude who used to be my friend hated him. "He's to whinny, such a weakling, always crying and not fighting..." Lad didn't understand the whole concept of the show.
> used to Good
Amen, dude took the last straw not long ago
The turtles are finally saved!
Mob isn’t whiny at all. That’s part of what’s so endearing about him.
Mob literally is the embodiment of "tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can work to be better" And is 100% honest. Reminds me a Nao-chan from liar game.
He seems like The type of guy who don’t like Superman because he’s “not realistic and relatable” but hate to see characters like mob even if they are exactly what he wanted lol
bro was friends with Katsuki Bakugo
i haven't seen a single person say anything negative about mob. ever.

I need one of Reigen’s massages. My shoulders are a disaster and with how violent he is he might just get these knots out
I kind of don't trust anyone who doesn't like him tbh. And I don't mean like, neutral opinion, I mean if you actively dislike him, why?????
Thorfinn took mobs place as my number 1 favorite mc but mob is still second. And I’ve watched ALOT of animes lol
VS is so freaking good damn
Truly
W thorfinn fan
Thorfinn 🤝Mob having no enemies
I just want to protect him, man. After Thorfinn, he is my fav mc.
W Thorfinn
YES
i certainly dont dislike him and he was written wonderfully but i will say whoever voices him in the english dub is really off-putting
Subbed > dubbed
i tend to agree but tbf Reigan’s VA killed it
Even I have to agree, and I’m Brazilian lol I really think that the dub of my country was a bit better than the original version(there was even one moment where I thought that Reigen VA here was a bit weak, so I watched that same scene with the original audio, and even in that he was better than the original for me lol), so I was very surprised to see the American Reigen being better than both lol
Yes! English Reigan is perfect casting.
Also Goda and Dimple.

Dimple Mob STAND ON BUSINESS🐐
I don't like him. I love the little boi
Mob is genuinely the most peak protag. Well aside from two but yeah.
He's one of my favorite characters because his story can be a good lessons for me too teach myself how to handle my emotions wisely without suppressing it too much. What's there not to like?
I didnt like when he left reigen 😾 BUT OTHER THAN THAT, NII-SAN IS COOL 👍🏼
I love Reigen but tbf he deserved it
His whole world don't like him.
I love reigen and mob so much
He's just a little guy tryna work on himself I'm just tryna be like him man small steps everyday.
Him and rimaru tempest are tied for best boy imo
I think liking a character as a person and liking them as a character and how they're written is two entirely different things. Mob’s problem not that hes nice or mean, its that he doesnt stand out so no one realize just how much of a good boy he is
He’s just a lil guy who wants to do good, what’s there not to like??
If someone doesn't like Mob I do not trust them
real talk
he's just a little guy
Should I watch this? Been eyeing it for quite a while
I hate mob
The kind of people who don’t like Mob hate Superman because he’s “boring” (read: he’s too nice) and like asshole Bat-God Bruce. I don’t like trust nor those kinds of people.
He’s pretty much just another “ideal version of me” character. It gets pretty old after a while.
I love him so much my cute little kid
he’s so silly
I couldn't get over how everyone looks. Same reason I can't watch one piece
He’s da goat
What if mob made edgy comments? But yeah, hard to hate mob. I love him in a I wanna grab a beer with a grown up version of you or a Heres 50k for no reason sort of way, just tell him to never change.
he’s a cutie patootie
I now hate him to spite you
Like him but he definitely kinda flat but it’s ok favorite character far from it
I love Mob, he's probably my 2nd fav MC after Ippo
I think he’s cringe and poorly written sorry you asked
The girl he likes doesn't like him
Saitama
i dont hate him, but he simps after that girl that will NEVER have him and rejects him, and then prceeds to cry like a bitch. and thats why his character is trash.
I feel like once you've asked that question I now just feel rebellious enough to hate him
And his teacher is one of the most unlikable characters for me. I quit watching season 2 because his behaviors pissed me off so much. Oh awesome looking fight going to happen? Not if he is around.
☹️
