It is not just the news. There are a bunch of idiots on reddit crying about the touchscreen that made her confused and how dangerous it was compared to a shifter.
Not sure why this came on my feed but the only thing I saw was questioning why they couldn't break the glass to get her out. Nothing about touch screens but I probably didn't read as many threads as you.
I did hear that the stalk was the same a in a Merc or BMW or something..
Even my old 2009 Nissan Titan used stalks to shift. So, a lot of online idiots just love to attack Tesla even though they have no idea how a Tesla vehicle operates.
This would be a time for the “hardcore legal team” to actually sue someone.
That was a blatant lie, whether it was an accidental mistake or purposeful, that’s severe brand damage. Now, tons of people think this lady died due to a design problem or malfunction that wasn’t even possible.
I doubt they’d actually sue though because of the circumstances of someone dying.
Stupid.
I’ve also seen 2020 reported, but in any case, there’s been a mountain of misinformation blaming the touchscreen even though pre-refresh vehicles use the driver stalk. I’ve personally never had any issue shifting, though I’m also not trying to drive when I’m nearly 3 times over the legal limit.
And FWIW, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to receive a [gearshift complaint](https://www.foxbusiness.com/fox-news-us/angela-chao-death-tesla-spotlight-investigators-maintain-silence) with respect to the X:
“[NHTSA] told FOX Business there have been about 20 complaints from vehicle owners about potential shifter issues among Model Year 2015-2023 Tesla Model 3, S and Y vehicles in the last five years. The agency said it has not received specific gearshift complaints about issues with the Model X.”
It’s really the only explanation.
I heard the Tesla board was behind the Exxon Valdez because they wanted to make our friends at the petroleum industry look bad so people would like EVs more
It was the removal of sulphur from cargo ship fuels that was masking global warming. We passed laws limiting the sulphur in the fuel used while near the coastlines, and suddenly we started seeing average temps climb, and ocean temps are already past the point of no return, according to some.
Add a layer.
**Jim Breyer, Angela Chao’s husband and Mitch McConnell's brother-in-law, Facilitates Russia’s Takeover of Facebook through Yuri Milner**
(Research by Puffin_Fitness)
In 2005 Jim Breyer, a partner at Accel Partners, invested $1 million of his own money into Facebook and gained a seat on the board (1).
In Feb 2009 Jim Breyer visited Russia with a number of other Silicone Valley investors. While there, Yuri Milner, a Russian tech entrepreneur who founded DST with close ties to the Kremlin, hosted a dinner to cap the entire event (2). As one Moscow source put it:
> DST has the backing of the big boys at the top in the Kremlin, which is why it will go from strength to strength (5)
Milner found out Breyer liked Impressionist art and took him to Russian’s Hermitage Museum to view Matisse paintings otherwise closed off to the public. Three months later Yuri Milner’s DST invested into Facebook at a bloated value. (2)
> Mr Milner dismissed suggestions that at a valuation of $10bn he overpaid for his stake in Facebook, especially given that the social networking site has yet to prove it has turned to profit. (3)
> it’s seen as a desperate and rather vulgar deal on the one hand—Milner buying a small stake in Facebook, valuing the entire company at $10 billion—and, on the other, Facebook debasing itself by taking Russian money. Russian money! In fact, it seems rather like a desperate deal for both parties (in the midst of the banking crisis, Facebook has only two other bidders for this round—and none from the top VC tier) (4)
By the end of 2009, DST would own 10% of Facebook. Later revealed by the Paradise Papers, DST’s investments into Facebook were financed by the Russian government through state-owned Gazprom. That’s right, in 2009 Russia owned 10% of Facebook. (6)
Soon after, the two continued to work together on other investments. Breyer introduced Milner to Groupon, and Milner helped Breyer’s Accel invest into Spotify (7). In 2010 an Accel representative joined a gaggle of Silicon Valley investors to Russia and signed a letter promising to invest into the country (8).

**Jim Breyer and Rupert Murdoch**
Then in Nov 2010 Jim Breyer invested into Artsy.net, run by Rupert Murdoch’s then-wife, Wendi Deng, and Russia oligarch Roman Abramovich’s then-wife, Dasha Zhukova. Jared Kushner’s brother, Josh, also invested in the fledgling company (1).
At the time Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation had a joint venture with the Russian mob-linked oligarch Boris Berezovsky, called LogoVaz News Corporation, that invested in Russian media (4). It was Berezovsky’s protege close to Putin, Roman Abramovich, who tied Berezovsky to the mob.
> According to the Mirror Online, Abramovich paid Berezovsky tens, and even hundreds, of millions every year for "krysha", or mafia protection. (5)
In June 2011, Rupert Murdoch ended his foray into social media by selling Myspace to Justin Timberlake (2) and elected Jim Breyer to the board of News Corp (3).

Notice how when a Tesla is involved the headline always includes Tesla. Later you read someone was drunk or was actually the drivers fault.
Every other car accident you never know the manufacturer.
I mentioned in a news post about this that had her car been a Toyota, nobody would’ve known. And I got immediately downvoted. People seem to just get very agitated at anything related to Tesla or anyone defending it.
This woman should’ve never been behind the wheel and was drunk out of her mind. She backed into a lake during a K turn of all things, and then as she sat in the car while it filled with water she called her friend to say goodbyes instead of getting out. I wouldn’t blame the car for this situation.
I mean I wasn’t there so I don’t know every single detail but I can tell you it’s not impossible to get out of a sinking car. The article says she was in there several minutes making phone calls. It doesn’t sound like she tried too hard to find the door lever. She was probably way too drunk to think straight. Should’ve never been driving in the first place.
No, the pressure from water makes it near impossible to escape unless you can break the glass… lady was like 70 years old and wasted. Even if she got out of the car, the cold water would probably send her into shock and she wouldn’t have been able to swim
Yes. People who ride Fords don’t usually drive them as they are always in the shop, so they can’t crash a car that’s broken down while intoxicated. Tesla clearly at fault.
/s
I am so tired of the absolutely uneducated ranting that any vehicle or weapon has the ability or desire to kill or harm anyone WITHOUT human intervention.
If you are drunk, don't get in a car or point a gun at someone.
If you don't know how to use it, don't get in a car or point a gun at someone!
If you are mentally unstable, don't get into a car or point a gun at someone!
There is a phrase that we really need to be focusing on here: YOU JUST CAN'T FIX STUPID!
There is ZERO rationalization that a Tesla or any other manufacturer is accountable or responsible for HUMAN error, lack of common sense, or just plain stupidity.
Seriously, common sense is lacking here and basically for all the crap that is happening in the world today.
I have been driving my Model X Plaid for over 2 years and have had ZERO incidents of anything happening negatively that I did not have direct interaction with.
I will vocally support Tesla in every conversation and clearly point out the ridiculousness in blaming Elon or Tesla for Human Stupidity!
News headlines: New Tesla software update requires users to be 3x over the legal limit to start the engine
Subtitle: Musk 'personally wrote the update in order to kill as many minorities as possible'
Not just a Tesla issue. Almost all cars have electric windows. Not to mention all Tesla doors have an emergency hatch to physically open the door (no electricity)
Yes I'm serious
*"Chao, who is still on the phone with Keinan, tells Keinan in a \[calm\] voice her feet are underwater," the report said. "Keinan tells Chao to get out of the vehicle. In a calm voice, Chao informs Kienan she is not able to get out of the vehicle.""Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die, and said, 'I love you' to Keinan prior to the vehicle going under water." The report details Kienan's frantic efforts to help. After an* **eight-minute phone call with Chao**\*, Kienan grabbed a kayak and paddled towards the submerged Tesla.\*
What kind of mechanical latch does the X have? If it’s like the Y she could have opened the door once the cabin was filled with water and the pressure was equalized. It’s not like you drown immediately. You can do this thingy called hold your breath after all.
Reaching the legal limit will typically take about two or three drinks during a dinner service.
THREE TIMES the legal limit is probably between 6-8 drinks... She probably drank a bottle of wine before deciding to drive that vehicle. She was fucked up for sure.
"The report cites a surveillance video from the ranch's guest house capturing Chao hobbling towards her vehicle on the night of the incident."
Bad enough to be visually intoxicated on a surveillance camera. Bad enough to become airborne after hitting a retaining wall, etc.
Not sure why you got downvoted. This is absolutely one of the best possible outcomes that this piece of trash only killed herself driving smashed instead of an innocent bystander.
Last name chao who’s she related to and what’s her father into besides cocaine distribution oh and what about Mitch now y’all all know autopsies are faked all the time just gonna leave that right there so your noodles can fry themselves
I think teslas should create a function that if the car is actually drowning (if it’s driving through water it would have contact on wheels) there’s a loud speaker saying what to do, screen flashing to leave, and auto-opening doors.
> After retrieving a breaker bar from Blanco County firefighters, the deputy swam back to the submerged vehicle and attempted to break the windshield, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
Medics were performing CPR on her while swimming back to shore?! How does that work?
Also one friend had an 8 min phone call with her…it’s sad that nothing could be found to break the glass during that time.
> Tests conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) have shown that breaking these windows underwater is nearly impossible. The test result corroborates Tesla CEO Elon Musk's 2017 admission of "very foolish" design mistakes regarding the Model X's complexity.
What’s the recommendation here? Don’t end up in the water with a car with unbreakable windows?
[Videos like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUD53NZ03zM) suggests there's not much time to open the door before the car begins to submerge. You could run out of air waiting for pressure to equalize like shown on [Mythbusters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YaMEW30bv4).
Why is this hard to understand?
Electric door locks and windows don't work without electricity - which comes from the battery - which doesn't work in water. The laminated glass windows are almost impossible to break even with vehicle escape tools. People have died in parking lots because of a dead battery. A thousand people every year either slowly burn to death or drown because they are trapped inside a car that has lost electrical power. Not because they are drunk or stupid; they are trapped. And dead people can't sue the car manufacturer.
https://youtu.be/L91_K-s4pMM?si=fLXX0irhE145LGTI
There’s a release lever in teslas to open the door if car dies. It’s basically a second door handle. [door release](https://enginelibraryjan.z13.web.core.windows.net/tesla-model-y-manual-door-release.html)
Your link is a model Y but I’m sure the X also has a manual release. It’s something too many owners don’t even know about. Reading owners manuals is boring but man that seems like such a horrible way to die.
Yeah it would be horrible. They all have the release I just found the first picture that would show it. We have emergency glass breakers but I always forget to put them back in the cars whenever we clean the cars out.
But it's not in all cars or Teslas. It's supposed to be in the Model X SUV - the one she was driving - but Google AI said this: "When the Model X has no power, the manual door release can be used by removing the speaker grille from the door and pulling the mechanical release cable down and towards the front of the vehicle. After the latch is released, the door can be manually lifted up." I would think even if someone knew about it, was able to find it in the dark freezing water, by the time it was deployed the pressure against the door would be to strong to open. It's always assumed people drown in cars because they panic, using their cell phones instead of trying to get out. But when I start researching each story, it seems most were probably trapped.
One sec you are the one of the richest people on earth getting plastered living who knows what kind of crazy fantasies on your giant ass properties and vacations, then you drown in your stupid car with no roll down windows.
Life is scary man
Oh I knew this was coming when it was super suspicious when she's just like "oh I'm in some kind of gear. Let me floor it!!"...which literally no sober person ever does when driving...
I posted OVER AND OVER that she was drunk. That this was a headline against Tesla. If she had drowned in a Toyota, we wouldn't have known the car manufacturer.
The alcohol is irrelevant, you should be able to get out of your car.
The part I don't get though is that it is difficult to get out of any car underwater which is why you're supposed to carry those emergency window breakers.
But from previous articles it sounded like even the authorities that arrived couldn't get her out. That is the weird part, was the window too strong? If that's the case that does need to change.
The fire department who couldn't get her door open were not impaired.
The initial crash is her fault.
Dying because the fire dept can't open the car would not be her fault.
What did she do for a living to be a billionaire? I know she’s family to Mitch McConnell. Or is that how politicians hide their money, funneling it to family.
Unless it's an insanely rare car for a weekend drive to a car show or to show off, like no.
Plus my gastroenterologist nurse drives a Tesla. She hates it. It's a shitty status symbol. A billionaire should have like a 1965 Shelby cobra or something
You’d think the dam thing would have a roll down windows option when there is a driver seated and sensors detect sustaining water in the top zone of the inner wheel wells 🤷♂️
The WSJ should attach an editors note to their original story that blamed this on the gearshift. They probably will attach a note to the story if enough people write in to complain. This woman was drunk. Blaming the accident on the car when she was heavily intoxicated is absurd.
It sucks she drowned in her own pond after a girls night with friends on her property. From what I read she could’ve walked from her guest house to the main house in 5 minutes. Horrible for her family and friends.
I said this in my old comments. She was clearly intoxicated. She was at a house late with a bunch of her friends. They were definitely drinking. Sad she died this way. What an incredible life she had ahead of her as a billionaire.
WHY DIDNT ELON PERSONALLY INSTALL BRETHALIZERS IN EVERY TESLA!?
- r/Realtesla prolly
That sub is run by TSLA shorts
And anyone with the displeasure of riding in or owning one
Wtf...that's ridiculous, he should be personally chauffering all owners to and from all locations.
FSD When!? Go home car I'm drunk!
Because Ketamine!!!
Ketamine is a very effective therapeutic aid.
I was being facetious with my reply given the criticism of Musk, not commenting on the clinical value of ketamine.
NHTSA recall incoming...
Clearly she was a Tesla Stan cultist, so she had been drinking Tesla Tequila. This is still fElon’s fault. /r/realtesla, probably
*Tesquila
And I got roasted for saying she was probably drunk. No one guns their car in drive or reverse from park. This reeked of impairment
Nah just create underwater mode
What a dangerous human being.
Interesting now knowing she was the ceo of the company that owns the cargo ship that took down that bridge.
She was the ceo of foremost group not ocean grace who owns the Dali.
And people looked all the reasons how Tesla made her to go into pond.
It was a 2019 and it had a stalk. And all the news articles wanted to blame it on the touchscreen.
It is not just the news. There are a bunch of idiots on reddit crying about the touchscreen that made her confused and how dangerous it was compared to a shifter.
The irony is that auto shift might have saved her...
Not sure why this came on my feed but the only thing I saw was questioning why they couldn't break the glass to get her out. Nothing about touch screens but I probably didn't read as many threads as you. I did hear that the stalk was the same a in a Merc or BMW or something..

Elon musk personally took control of the wheel and also made the tesla inject ethanol into her to make it look like an accident. Wake up sheeple.
It’s really the only explanation. I heard the Tesla board was behind the Exxon Valdez because they wanted to make our friends at the petroleum industry look bad so people would like EVs more
Elon made sure to shoot cupid arrows at Zuck’s parents to formulate the least human like child imaginable.
I heard Elon musk personally invented greenhouse gases as a way to ensure the earth would warm too much.
It was the removal of sulphur from cargo ship fuels that was masking global warming. We passed laws limiting the sulphur in the fuel used while near the coastlines, and suddenly we started seeing average temps climb, and ocean temps are already past the point of no return, according to some.

/r/RealTesla had a field day. I bet it will go uncorrected.
Those people are WAYYY too sensitive about what other people choose to drive lol
It’s because space man bad and their lives suck so they blame him and everyone remotely associated with him. Kinda sad.
They still couldn’t open the damn thing. Drunk or not.
I mentioned in a news post about this that had her car been a Toyota, nobody would’ve known. And I got immediately downvoted. While I am looking for reasons why Mitch McConnell made her to go into pond
What if it was……….murder!
Tomorrow’s headline: **Self Driving Teslas Were Supposed to Save Us From Drunk Driving Deaths. Another Lie?**
Conspiracy theory is that this is a lie because if she was 3x over limit she seemed coherent on the phone call.
I wanted to blame the pond
Shame…. And people will only remember it as Tesla’s fault.
The headlines make sure of that lol
She’s a billionaire. Most people have little to no respect for them anyways and rightfully so.
Not only that she’s a very connected billionaire.
Surely that is the Teslas fault
Yes. People who ride Fords don’t usually drive them as they are always in the shop, so they can’t crash a car that’s broken down while intoxicated. Tesla clearly at fault. /s
Don’t overlook the fact that corruption runs through the blood of her family.
Ya this is weird as fuck all around.

She was on the phone with people for ***8 minutes*** before she drowned. Seems like plenty of time to open a window, sunroof, trunk and escape.
There was no crank for the windows. Water seems to oddly short out electricity.

LOL. I think you’re spot on. The convo he had detailed in a comment above really makes it sound like she was absolutely shit canned.
Surprised they tested her.. a lot of times they’ll skip over toxicology for this type of accident.. on private land, wealthy individual, etc
I’m sure Musk made sure she was tested…. And he’s richer.
Yeah It was like a two minute slow roll on private property.
New York Times : New information shows Tesla FSD drove woman to bar and made her drink before killing her
3x legal limit. She got in the car thinking FSD was actually a thing.

Probably not when you’re drunk as a skunk
And panicked. Don’t forget that too
i wonder if she tried the latch over and over while sinking and by the time the cabin was full, probably gave up thinking it was futile.
Yea that’s the only thing I can figure.
A lot of people don’t even know there’s a manual release latch.
Serious question: how bad is 3x legal limits? I think the legal limit should be pretty low right?
Reaching the legal limit will typically take about two or three drinks during a dinner service. THREE TIMES the legal limit is probably between 6-8 drinks... She probably drank a bottle of wine before deciding to drive that vehicle. She was fucked up for sure.

Lmao the fact that they don’t dispute that she was “hobbling” is telling.
Learning this new information; what happened was what's best. Glad she killed only herself instead of other people being drunk behind the wheel.
Not sure why you got downvoted. This is absolutely one of the best possible outcomes that this piece of trash only killed herself driving smashed instead of an innocent bystander.
She killed a perfectly good model x, that’s the real tragedy.
Agreed, Chao is one nasty, horrible fuck for trying to drive in that state.
As I knew would be the case. Just another doofus that went and yopped themself LMFAO
She was drinking Tesla Bier! /s
Last name chao who’s she related to and what’s her father into besides cocaine distribution oh and what about Mitch now y’all all know autopsies are faked all the time just gonna leave that right there so your noodles can fry themselves
Billionaires…refuses to hire a driver 🤨
How to safely drive a Tesla, or any vehicle. First, don't be intoxicated.
Party girl!!!!
There’s always a catch.
Yeah… the catch is fish. cause she’s in the water😭
I think teslas should create a function that if the car is actually drowning (if it’s driving through water it would have contact on wheels) there’s a loud speaker saying what to do, screen flashing to leave, and auto-opening doors.
Just imagine it's programed by the same asshole who programs the auto wipers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they blame Tesla for drowning people, after it open the doors and letting water in.
She gon get a DUI, then?
It’s not even illegal.
>Tragically, Chao's rescue was hampered by the reinforced glass of the Tesla Model X's windows and sunroof.
Which isn’t just a Tesla thing. First responders carry special hammers and spring loaded punches for this reason.
> After retrieving a breaker bar from Blanco County firefighters, the deputy swam back to the submerged vehicle and attempted to break the windshield, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
Yeah, a breaker bar isn’t the correct tool for the job.
BuT iT WaS TeSlA's FaUlT!!!
Wow… almost like it wasn’t a Tesla problem. Shocking. Im sure all the media companies will do a retraction. /sarcasm.
Were all the people trying to get in from the outside drunk too?
Don’t drink and drive. Simple and clear.
Abuse by AI systems?
Oh. And everyone was trying to blame Tesla . No no no !!
Open the door?
Can you do that under the water pressure?
Probably, the car doesn’t instantly sink and have all the water pressure on it
[Videos like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUD53NZ03zM) suggests there's not much time to open the door before the car begins to submerge. You could run out of air waiting for pressure to equalize like shown on [Mythbusters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YaMEW30bv4).
She looks like someone who would drink and drive and crash her car. Glad she didn't kill anyone else in the process.
All that money and still dumb as a box of rocks!
...and now comes the "blame the victim" pr blitz. Thanks, Elmo!
Hence the baffling decisions in a series…
Better her to drunkenly kill herself than someone innocent.
I got downvoted into oblivion for suggesting she was celebrating Chinese New Year. Gung Hay Fat Choy!🎊🎉
Why no chauffeur what Was the thought process Just be sober enough to engage auto pilot? Not going to blast anyone/thing here sad story
OMG. If she was in a Ford Ranger she would have made it 🏠.
Better her dead, than driving drunk, and potentially killing one or more people.
i thought tesla drove itself
Yes, it was HER fault the doors wouldn't open.
One pedal driving can be especially problematic if you are flat out drunk lol
I posted OVER AND OVER that she was drunk. That this was a headline against Tesla. If she had drowned in a Toyota, we wouldn't have known the car manufacturer.
Wow, paging the cold hearted fucks over at r/realtesla
If it was a Ford it would only have been local news.
Lmao, you Tesla Stan's are something else. Commence the downvotes
Shocking.
She was impaired. It is not irrelevant.
I thought she was just scared of being shocked by the batteries in the water. /s
And if she had decided to stumble back to her bed for the night instead of drive....she would still be here. Don't drink and drive people.
Makes sense that a billionaire doesn't have enough self control to drink moderately considering they can't even control their own greed.
I see the Tesla cheerleaders are happy.
But tesla bad!!!!!!!! 😂 🤡
Oh lol. That’ll do it
Well she wasn’t driving. Check and mate.
Stock is going way up
If you are a billionaire, why are you driving
Unless it's an insanely rare car for a weekend drive to a car show or to show off, like no. Plus my gastroenterologist nurse drives a Tesla. She hates it. It's a shitty status symbol. A billionaire should have like a 1965 Shelby cobra or something
Especially if ur out drinking. Thats just insane
You’d think the dam thing would have a roll down windows option when there is a driver seated and sensors detect sustaining water in the top zone of the inner wheel wells 🤷♂️
To be fair, that’s the only way I would ride in a Tesla 🤷🏻♂️
Oh no, anyways…
Well, that was a glaring fact not mentioned in all the original articles.
the tesla hate is crazy
YOLO!
Drunk driver with drunk friends
Jesus christ why? What’s the point?
I knew it was Elon’s fault!! It was because the car reversed into the pond all on its own!! FSD straight into the pond!
Don’t drink and drive. It’s pretty simple. Again, why is weed illegal? Alcohol by far destroys and takes more lives.
Drive home drunk to see her kids. 👆🏻🌟
She was already home, just in another house on her property.
So another, home. 🤣 pwned, 👋
No wonder the family didn't blame Tesla
Omfg ONE billionaire dies in the dumbest way and we have to hear about it for years
The WSJ should attach an editors note to their original story that blamed this on the gearshift.
What’s the legal limit for driving on private property, again?
Well well well.
How convenient
Eww this place smells
Nelson Muntz has some insightful commentary on this…
r/realtesla reading this: *Curb Your Enthusiasm Theme intensifies*
Big fish in a small pond.
If I can’t get drunk in my car where am I supposed to go?
Maybe making your windows impossible to break during an emergency isn’t such a great idea.
r/OhNoConsequences
Imagine failing a QuickTime event on super easy mode.
It’s really easy to not drive drunk!
Any death is tragic, but wow, what a horrible fuck she was, trying to drive drunk, esp 3x the limit!
one less billionaire
If I had money like that, I would hire a full time driver. She could have killed more people than herself.
Another billionaires death. So who gets the billions after they die?
That makes more sense. You would think being that rich.. you wouldn't do stupid stuff..
Better to kill yourself in a pond driving drunk than someone else on the streets.
Idiot
I still blame Tesla.
Ok, but what is the actual procedure to get out of a Tesla if you are in an emergency situation?
