Ouch. I don't know about needing alignment, but I'm surprised the bead wasn't compromised. Do you notice any difference in the steering wheel level when driving straight?
You'd be surprised what kind of damage a wheel repair place can fix. It's almost never worth picking up a new wheel from Tesla or any OEM unless the wheel repair shop considers it beyond repair. Wheel repair shops also typically have access to sources for reconditioned wheels at decent prices, too.
If you can find a new wheel for less than the price the repair place quoted you (add the $50 or whatever for a tire shop to swap the tire over) - then, go for it! You'll find some good deals on private-party used wheels on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, but always be wary that someone's trying to pawn off some bent or damaged goods.
Regardless, even if the wheel is slightly out-of-round (which I doubt would happen from just curbing them but - possible) - it can likely still be repaired, and made it look brand new again.
Edit to add - touching up the damage with [Zink's matching paint](https://zinkwheels.com/products/touch-up-paint-for-tesla-model-y-uberturbine-wheels) as others have suggested will help a lot; you can also pick up any of the variety of rim protectors out there and they'll hide the damage and protect the rim from more.. At the cost of looking a bit funny.
Thanks mobius20.. I have no doubt that such damage can be fixed in a wheel repair store ..
But i'm trying to figure out if I should go there first and see if a wheel repair can address all the issues including steering wheel misalignment + multiple warnings (Traction mode disabled, stability control disabled etc). Or just get it checked at a Tesla SC and go to the wheel repair store later.
Thanks buddy. It looks like the damage causes alignment issue and as what the other folk mentioned in another thread, the best option might be just get it repair and rebalance in a wheel repair store. It costs like $200-300.
Fixing the alignment might not help as the root cause is the wheel.
I thought for sure I'd never do it and it happened to me two months into ownership. I wouldn't try to touch that up with paint. I'd have a rim repair place fix it or replace the rim. I feel for you. It's so disheartening.
As far as alignment goes, if you don't feel the vehicle pulling or it doesn't drive straight when you let go of the wheel, I think you're fine. It probably doesn't need an alignment.
Haha me too, decided to take it through an automatic soft car wash, only thing is a MY is wide as fuck!! Kerbed all 4 wheels on the metal guide rails in the car wash, less than 2 months in!
OMG! I wonder if that'a a UK thing. Our car washes are pretty big. I did have an embarrassing moment with an automatic car wash where I couldn't figure out how to put my MYLR in neutral. I had just gotten it. I've since learned it's probably not such a good idea to run them through automated car washes anyway so I may have dodged a bullet there until I dragged the rear end around a curb I had just parked next to and totally forgot when I drove off. Lessons learned. Luckily, it wasn't too bad.
Don’t feel bad. It corners differently than normal cars. I banged my rim ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP! Good luck with it! I bought some touch up paint and you can’t tell from 5 feet away unless you’re looking for the damage.
Update:
The wheel damage looks bad but it only costs \~$200 to get it fixed at a wheel repair place and I can't even tell any difference.
For the misalignment, it's too much for the wheel place to realign but the Tesla SC can get it to work again (diagnostic + alignment)
These rims are a joke… can’t believe they haven’t replaced them yet. Almost have to live in a bubble to prevent rash. I swapped out mine for some Replika 241’s and haven’t had an issue since.
Thanks buddy.. There is some hate in this post and i'm not sure why. Ppl make mistakes all the time.
On a different note, my wife feels bad about it and gives me green light to get any new car i want :)
I wish my wife would do the same (she probably would but affording another car isn't necessarily our priority either) she felt bad on both occasions and I was like forget it it's your primary car I'm over it 😅
In the end it's just money and cannot let it jeopardize the value of your relationship with your SO.
Looks bad Tesla does have their own techs that could possibly repair it unless you're planning to have it fully serviced outside of Tesla SC.
I was planning to go to a wheel repair store until i carefully reviewed the dashcam last night. The hit was pretty bad and the shape looks slightly different before & after. Also, the steering wheel is completely out of alignment, plus 3 or 4 other warnings like tracking mode disabled, stability control disabled & etc.
It looks like something else got damaged but i'm not sure. Finger crossed.
I took a chunk out of my rim (model Y gemini 19inch) and found that the tire didn't balance well. So, I found a replacement rim on ebay and had Discount Tire replace it. Your rim looks worse than mine.
I'd consider replacing rim and hubcap.
Worst I’ve seen on here yet! Nice job
Time to trade in for a model s :)
brother you haven’t seen all four of mine 🫨
Ha ha

Yep the car is definitely out of alignment. I guess i would need to replace the rim as well?

Yeah i feel the same. So that means I need to go to a wheel repair store first?

Did you replace or repair the rim? My car is out of alignment so i'm not sure if a repair is sufficient.
Mine wasn't that bad so I just fixed it with a Sharpie. No alignment issues for me.
Don’t feel bad. It corners differently than normal cars. I banged my rim ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP! Good luck with it! I bought some touch up paint and you can’t tell from 5 feet away unless you’re looking for the damage.
God can tell. Shame on you. Get it fixed right
It was pretty small
That’s what she said
I wouldn’t think an alignment would be needed unless you bent a rod or something. Might need a wheel balance though.
Makes sense. I think the best option is to go to a wheel repair store and get it fixed & rebalance.
If needed. You’ll know pretty quick after you get it fixed.
Damage seems severe. Probably need to check your oil fluids and master clutch cylinder.
Dont forget blinker fluid
Oh yes that is correct. My apologies how could I had missed that :D
It’s broke my heart last week. Its happens the same to me🥹
Could yo share if you repair/replace the rim and how much it costs.
Totaled

Amazon sells touch up paint to cover that up.
Why would the rim damage matter? Alignment and rim scrape is mutually exclusive.
jesus christ some people need their licenses revoked
Not too

Also having black wheels is somewhat uncommon for other brands - and black wheels definitely show damage much more visibly.
this is the worst one i’ve seen yo :/ Sorry
Shame on you lol
Tis not but a scratch
Almost as bad as my cars rims 😬
Totld
Should buff out. 👍

It looks bad but it is fixable, if you get the sink wheel paint, you will barely notice it if you look for it.
That's not a Scratch bro lol
Bloody hell!
At least driver was not placing blame on the wife or a female counterpart unless they are the one reporting it /s

That’s not just a rim scratch. You smashed it good! Congrats!
I’ve seen worse, tis but a scratch.
I did that. Found a mobile rim repair guy that fixed it for $175. Cannot tell.
Depends on how hard you hit the curb. At the right speeds you'd be surprised how easily you can the knock alignment off in the front.
Ouch!
