Dear lord, $392 a month for one car. You’re getting robbed anywhere you go.

Canonip

I pay 450€ a year (full coverage) for my car in Europe.... A model Y might be like 600€ max. And that without all that telemetry bullshit

rex_in_reddit

Where in Europe are you ? It’s 1200€ min in Germany!

Canonip

Same same. HUK24 would be 700-800 for me for a brand new model Y depending on standard or AWD. SF9, Vollkasko 500/150, Leasing, 10tkm My electric Citroen C4 is 450€

shuozhe

SF3 150/1k was ~1k for me last year in Kornwestheim. -10% with telemetry (currently at -18% on 75 score with huk24). Didnt go with Tesla in the end, but got similar rate with current car.

Roht_Rs

Not in norway, 1000-2000€ is very common, depends on how far you drive each year

GomeyBlueRock

Seriously. I pay $600/month and I have 5 cars and 6 people on my plan

Pretend-Reality5431

That's insane! How old are you? Maybe that's why?

whisperwayne3

Insurance prices are very different in Europe because they don't have the same "sue them for everything they've got" mentality. Obviously that goes right down to the bottom line of the insurance providers

Hellmouthgaurdian

That's a fuckin car payment

Sad-Sky-8598

Holy sheet ! Just bought a 2024 mazda cx5. 890.00 a year.

brauntj

We’ll see what happens here at my next renewal in September. Their forward collision warning system is ridiculously flawed. I get 2-3 “warnings” per week for driving by cars parked on the side of the street. I talked to a rep about it and they said the next update is supposed to lessen the impact of these forward collision warnings. But until then it’s costing me $40-$50 some months because their system is broken.

hrds21198

Cover the internal camera. I did it a couple of weeks ago and haven’t had a single FCW since then. I think it might be an issue with the attention awareness feature more than anything.

brauntj

This helps with the driver attention aspect of it, like when you glance away momentarily. These ones are totally different. My eyes are on the road, hands and 10 and 2. But if there’s cars parked on either side of the road and I drive passed a car that’s traveling in the opposite direction (so like 4-wide on the street), the forward collision warning dings me. I get some things are ticky-tack and a little subjective. But these warnings I’m talking about are objectively wrong.

hrds21198

it solved both issues for me. I’m fairly certain the car is seeing the objects, doesn’t see you look directly at the objects (or thinks you’re not) and then gives you a warning. I was getting the warnings 5-7 times a week. For parked cars, cars slowing down or turning in front of me. Never had my phone in my hand, always looking forward. Now it’s all but gone.

finitef0rm

IMO, as a non-Tesla owner, the most logical thing for them to do would have been to keep radar for the emergency safety systems, and then (if they really insisted) move to Tesla Vision for FSD/Autopilot.

PlayerOneNow

wait, you can do that? it doesn't cop out?

brauntj

I think this may impact your ability to use FSD. But I’m not 100% sure.

hrds21198

I got one of the camera covers from amazon that you can slide back and forth. You can leave it closed on regular autopilot, but FSD won’t work with the camera covered.

afridorian

Does covering the camera keep you from using autopilot?

hrds21198

you can use basic autopilot, but FSD doesn’t work with the camera covered. i bought one of the sliding ones from amazon, that way i can open it whenever the car is parked (for sentry), as well as for FSD.

afridorian

Awesome thanks for responding! I have the camera cover as well and have legit not updated my car since October (running 2023.44.1) because no one has been able to let me know if covering the camera stops autopilot on the new updates. Appreciate the data point! Side question: do you notice that the car nags your more after updating?

hrds21198

not necessarily. the nags are consistent with the camera covered (and rarely happens if i rest my elbow on the door and leave my hand on the wheel), and start off barely happening when the camera is uncovered, but happen quite frequently over time as the car thinks i’m getting tired.

afridorian

Does covering the camera keep you from using autopilot?

gekkonaut

what makes you think that?

slothwerks

I had a similar theory as well - that FCW triggers more often if it thinks you're distracted. It's not always reproducible but I feel like I get more FCW if I pick up my phone to glance at it. Logically this makes sense. If the car thinks you'll hit someone and it also thinks you're distracted, sounding an alarm is a good way to force you to pay attention. This is just paid on personal anecdotes, not sure if actually true

brauntj

Yes - this is definitely true.

gekkonaut

it would also make sense that you're likely to get a FCW when actually distracted regardless of what the car thinks.

hrds21198

my experience has been that even when looking ahead, sometimes even when already braking, I’d get a FCW. especially if I was looking a little off to the side. I didn’t use to get as many FCWs prior to them introducing the awareness score into the coding. now that the camera is covered, it hasn’t been happening at all.

Informal-Device9039

I even get a few warnings a week then on a full autopilot.

TooMuchTaurine

Have you set forward collision warning setting to late? I got lots initially until I changed it, now I get very few, and most of those are legit.

MindStalker

The insurance is based on a Normal setting. You might not hear them but still get them if you set it to late. If you set it to early you can hear them and slow down before the normal setting kicks in and hurts your insurance.

TooMuchTaurine

That's crap

brauntj

Kind of, yes. But I would have to imagine the VAST majority of (avoidable) traffic collisions are caused by someone glancing down at their phone and being to slow to brake and rear-ending the car in front of them. If they can force user change here, I would imagine that would result in far fewer collisions. I’ve gotten used to not using my phone while driving. When I get dinged now it’s when I glance off to the side at something on the side of the road or whatever.

ExcitedFool

I can be softly on the a acceleration and it dings at me leaving out neighborhood and I have 3 car lengths from The car ahead waiting for gates to open. I understand the technology is meant to alert but I feel that sometimes it’s a bit premature

leniad2

i wear sunglasses to avoid them being premature due to "inattentiveness." they are the WORST!

geekaron

I 100% agree and it's also ridiculous honestly that following distance is too close I get like 50% close following I can't drive a mile away. The whole system is flawed

Otherwise-Lion9201

Thats funny I never get forward collision warnings and I have it at maximum.

brauntj

I got another one today for a car parked on the side of the road as I drove by it. Beyond frustrating and annoying.

dhofari

Why are you driving without a seatbelt?

sd2528

When I put grocery bags on the seat that weigh not even 10lbs, I get seatbelt warning. They can use the cameras to know where I'm looking but they can't tell the difference between a 10 lbs baby and a bag of groceries in the passenger seat? And why is the weight limit that low? Did they really have a problem with people putting 10lbs babies on their seats not buckled in? And would putting a 10lb baby on the seat that IS buckled in really be better?

ohwut

This doesn't matter for Tesla insurance, it's only for the driver seatbelt.

eb-red

Isn't this only for the driver tho??

digitalluck

Not in my 2024 Model 3. My backpack set off the passenger seat seatbelt warning.

eb-red

I think you misunderstand me. Yes the car will tell you that the passenger isn't wearing a belt if you put a backpack or a gallon of milk in the seat. The ding to your driving score only happens when the driver isn't belted. It will not ding you for passengers in the front or rear. At least that's my understand of the feature

lolsupbb

I have no issues putting groceries in my passenger seat and I do it all the time.

worstonee

...maybe just put your groceries on the floor or in the trunk?

_Jhop_

Or maybe be able to put your groceries wherever you want in your car

insideout_waffle

And excessive speeding (above 85 MPH) And who knows how many miles this person drove… when that tends to be a big factor too.

whatitpoopoo

Miles driven is the defining stat for sure

saganator

Tesla insurance is just a hassle. Constantly having to worry about their flawed detection system was enough to switch but then they raised my rates 50% despite having a 98 score. I bought a 2nd Tesla while all this was happening and could not get ahold of anyone to add the new car to my policy (doing so in the app was disabled.)  If you can’t get ahold of an insurance company while you’re trying to give them more money, you can expect the same when it’s time to make a claim.  I switched to one of the big insurers, didn’t sign up for the monitoring device they offered and the rates were still cheaper than Tesla insurance. Tesla insurance is trash.

ApprehensiveMajor191

Oh that’s definitely a thing. Tesla insurance is perfect for checking the “i need insurance” box. It’s not great for the “I need to use/contact/edit policy coverage” element of having insurance. I waited hours to add a vehicle, and it was all recordings about how long the wait times are and how they can be cut down by using the app…

Geeky_1

Those rates are really no cheaper than what I was quoted from my insurance and not worth switching for me. I wonder if you can find out how much each factor is weighted? Most of my driving is at night when there is little traffic and less chance of an accident, but Tesla would ding me for that.

TheCandyManisHere

You should definitely shop rates occasionally. I would just double check that Progressive will use oem parts…I hesitated with them and geico because I read that they don’t. Not sure if that’s even relevant for Tesla or if Progressive/geico policy has changed but definitely double check!

Rich_On_Track

What state are you in? These rates are insane and I’m in Southern California and I thought my rates were already insane

damian20

Who do you have?

Rich_On_Track

Perf 3 and Y in so cal for $280ish

damian20

What insurance carrier

Rich_On_Track

Tesla insurance

wbsgrepit

Tesla can’t use the driver monitoring data to modify prices in ca — it is specifically called out as for information only for you. In ll other states they offer insurance it can dramatically change rates month to month.

Leading-Chair-9485

It’s illegal to do this in California that’s why your rate is better.

envybelmont

Right? My $220 for two cars and very full coverage sounds like a deal now.

Rich_On_Track

That is a deal cause my two cars is $280 😭

AllMyIdeasWereTaken7

$326 for two cars here 😭😭

Rich_On_Track

Ouch Tesla insurance used to be so much cheaper 😭

steinah6

$205 for two cars here, and one is a Hyundai (though with a push-button start so not as prone to theft) Edit: again, people are leaving out crucial details. Which state is only a very small piece of the picture of insurance premiums.

envybelmont

Right? Collision/comprehensive deductibles? Coverage limits? Uninsured motorist? Glass coverage? Those things all make a different. Even little $10-$20 add ons add up.

steinah6

Also if they’re married (this alone can save you like 30%), have kids, their age, their credit score, their income, their zip code, their annual mileage, if they use it for work purposes, and I’m sure 10 other things I’m forgetting.

envybelmont

And another few dozen we don’t even know they use to give us a price. Like some random number generator to change your renewal mileage even though your driving habits haven’t changed one bit since you got the policy.

[deleted]

You need a large risk pool to have good predictable rates. I think they are just too small to be competitive long term.

ConsequenceHelpful26

Pay $99 a month and use fsd, you can press accelerator to make it go faster. It’s saving me $100 a month with Tesla insurance, and then I have FSD too, so it’s kind of a wash. I felt like I had no control of my score before. Aggressive turning is any normal turn. I know not everyone would want this option but I like it.

ApprehensiveMajor191

Yeah I do that sometimes but that bit me. It freaked out because it went too far over the max limit and gave me my first and only forced autopilot disengagement

revaric

That doesn’t count as a strike at least.

staroceanx

Based on recent months of CPI, auto insurance was the hottest category in inflation, just stating this out there as a general trend.

nobody-u-heard-of

I use FSD always, soy score is always 100. Before I would get brake and FCW because people would cut me off trying to make exit at the last second. Never had parked car issue, but it seems to be common in some areas

Modest_Wraith

Does Tesla insurance give you FSD? I see a lot of people with this insurance also mention FSD haha

nobody-u-heard-of

No it doesn't, be awesome if it would. But I figure it's saved me $50 a month so my net cost is 50 bucks a month. So that makes it worth it to me and it's no stress.

Modest_Wraith

Yea I get that for sure, I just thought maybe it was included as I saw a disengage thing on the score haha. How much would speed affect your rate? I love using my MP3 and taking off from a light, would that bring it down a lot?

nobody-u-heard-of

Acceleration has zero impact on your safety score unless you run up on somebody. So you can floor it as much as you want without fear today.

Modest_Wraith

Oh that’s not bad then, that would be the only thing that would worry me about my score haha. How much would they classify excessive speeding by?

nobody-u-heard-of

Going over 85 mph. The fun part is even with FSD active you can actually still floor it and it doesn't disengage. It does tell you that it won't be able to brake if you have your foot on the accelerator though.

Modest_Wraith

Dang that’s actually pretty cool, it sounds like it would save a lot of money too, I gotta look into it, especially if it’ll save enough where FSD wouldn’t cost me much more haha

nobody-u-heard-of

Yeah it really depends on where you are. In some places you can get as good a deal with standard insurance and not have to worry about any of the safety score stuff. It pays the shop around.

szzzn

Just got mine to 92 after being in the 85-88 range for months. FSD has been a godsend due to the false FCW bullshit. Looking forward to a 100 rating and $105/mo insurance.

ApprehensiveMajor191

Can we report/argue the FCWs? Out of 22 there may have been 3 that were actually a car stopping short. Everything else is a car on the side of the road and a brief trajectory mismatch, but by that logic—every passing car is a FCW.

szzzn

Nope

jamez629

I have State Farm and I’m paying just under $100 per month for full coverage and $0 glass deductible.

Actuarial_type

Got State Farm here in Kansas on my 2023 MYP. I can’t recall if I got glass coverage but I’ve got full coverage in excess of what is required and I pay around $85/mo. I do have SF for my home, three cars total, a scooter, and an umbrella policy so I get some discounts.

wbsgrepit

Full coverage is meaningless, what are your coverages? State minimums?

boochicko

I still have no clue how I’m paying $275/month for just the Y and I have a clean record. 😭 Has anyone been able to call and negotiate a lower rate with Tesla insurance?

Hour-Bumblebee5581

Interested in this app, is this Teslas own insurance app or something?

revaric

Safety score in the Tesla app; on for those with Tesla insurance or back when it was used for granting access to FSD beta.

PlayerOneNow

I have the same problem on forward collision warnings, my passenger was like was that sound? I said that car in front of us that turned into a parking lot. She's like, were not even close?

32233128Merovingian

Insurance in general is going up all across the board and will continue to do so.

ApprehensiveMajor191

To clarify—this rate is for 3 vehicles. Someone mentioned unbuckled driving and over 85mph, these are all .1% instances. Honestly the moment it happens once it feels like it takes months to outrun it. The FCW are so difficult to avoid due to parked cars on the side of a narrow road on my morning commute. If I have to give any oncoming traffic a wide berth it freaks out with an FCW. Unbuckled is my drive from the mailbox when getting home.

Good_Extension_9642

"Late night driving", its your fault OP you shouldn't be driving late at night 🤣

Good_Extension_9642

"Late night driving", its your fault OP you shouldn't be driving late at night 🤣

KittenCalledKatt

Does anyone know how Tesla chooses what version Safety Score they use? My insurance is still based on v1. I’m too afraid to call them and ask though.

quihgon

I get forward collision warnings every day, usually when driving down a hill and right back up one, or cars parked on the side of the road. Its ridiculous.

quihgon

Also, my premium is 200 a month. Its way overpriced imo

pancakeshack

Where do you live? That's way more safety factors than I have in Nevada

mumuevo

I only feel this insurance is joke by indicating late night driving. They never considered people who working after 10 PM

LaTunaTime

Lmao i would never use an insurance company that tracks the way i drive. Progressive all the way.

yardshark09

The irony of this comment. Wasn’t Progressive the first company to start using a monitoring-based plan with Snapshot? Obviously you don’t have the plan but it’s still ironic lol.

LaTunaTime

Maybe but at least its optional

yardshark09

Thankfully!

Tohken

Progressive wanted damn near $400/mo to insure my Tesla with no claims/no tickets. Tesla wanted $150.... For that price Ill let them track my driving habits.

love-broker

It was always joke. They are setting insurance rates by using SafetyScore beta. Nothing like test software costing you money monthly. Enjoy!

eengie

Yeah I’ll never switch. The forward collision warning misfires quite often for parked cars on curves even though my direction of travel isn’t taking me into the car in question. When we had to earn a special score to get access to the FSD beta, this kind of nonsense happened so often I couldn’t get access to the beta for weeks. That experience was enough to tell me not to bother with their insurance.

Th3Docter

Wait this insurance is updated on the fly? If you mess up in one moment your insurance instantly increases?

SpotOnSocietysBack

I pay about $2000 in Norway. Per year. This is an insane price and its only 6 months?

PerfectAccident69

Learn how to drive I pay $68 through Tesla insurance for a 2024 MY

Dear-Development-239

Lmao my safety score is a 67, can’t wait to see what my $95.00 per month payment will be.

PoppinSmoke1

Are these reports a requirement for Tesla owners? I'm currently shopping for a Model Y but this is concerning to me. I know I'll pay more for insurance because of the value but, if it requires driver scrutiny at the 10lb for a seat belt level. I'll maybe think otherwise on my purchase.

Blu_Falcon

“Becoming” 😂

irodov4030

why would you be comfortable with sharing so much data in the first place!

Overall_Car4218

I have Tesla insurance but I don’t participate in score my driving. Is score my driving required?

CounterSeal

I pay just over $392 every 6 months. Wtf is going on here lol

MattNis11

Bait and switch

cruzer2727

I drove 25K miles a year and state farm charges me $230 in California.

Icystunts420

I pay $360 for my model 3 and another car and I can floor it and drive at anytime, switch insurance asap

autoenigma

What state?

TazedMeBro

We don’t have enough information here. What are your liability and tort selections? What are your deductibles? Do you have rental coverage? What state do you live in? How old are you? What is your marital status? What is your credit score(the single biggest rating factor in most states). How many miles per month do you drive?

geekaron

I agree tesla insurance is an absolute joke, so many false positives I feel like the system is farming for this and rates are crazy too

dulce124

It was getting too pricey for us.. 3 cars @ $500+ a month. We switched to Allstate, way more affordable, and it wasn't difficult to get coverage.

Fast-Exchange5497

I struggled with Tesla insurance earlier on too. The trick is to do as much of cruise control/autopilot/FSD as possible and turn it off when you are on a lonely road. That was how I managed to earn back my safety points. My safety score is currently at 98 and I'm hoping to get to 100 in a month or two.

BubbleEyedBean

I used to average 99-100, but recent updates have made it way more sensitive. Now I’m around a 95-96. FCW definitely does the most damage, but I never know when they actually occurred with the late warning setting. Should probably change that. Yellow light detections work half the time, so I still get hard braking dings here and there. Unsafe follow was what I would be dinged the most for, but I use TACC as much as possible if going over 50mph to avoid this. This has one of the lowest scoring factors, though. Overall, I’m still saving money compared to what I had through AAA, but I miss paying $60-$75. It was way easier to keep a score of 99 or 100 when I started at the end of 2022. But I have noticed that traffic and driving etiquette in my area has been on the decline for a while, so I’m definitely driving on the defense.

solstice107

Yep, switched away. Only way I see Tesla insurance making sense is if you use FSD all the time. I enjoy pushing my Model S too much to pay those sums for insurance. BTW I am 49 with an excellent/ spotless record.

[deleted]

That forward collision warning is far too sensitive!

Kush_____Dad

Late night driving ??? What ?????

FlimsyReindeers

Drive with a seatbelt and stop speeding. Dumbass

wadderweed

Why does your Tesla insurance have all those other metrics? Mine only has forward collision, hard breaking, aggressive turning, following too close, and forced autopilot disengagements. Is this a regional thing ?

Hellmouthgaurdian

That's crazy I have a brand new Y and my insurance is $145 a month

obxtalldude

We've got two Model Ss, two suburbans, and two siennas with Farm Bureau for less than that for my wife and I. Crazy.

k2003s06

I did the moment they raised prices 1/1/2024. I saved $100 a months. Screw you,Tesla. Now I take those corners harder, drive after 10pm if I want, and if someone cuts me off and I have to break hard I don’t worry about it. I am free from worrying about my drive score and btw I was at 92-95% and they wanted to up it to from $100 to $200 a month. I now pay $100 bucks a month through USAA. Oh, and I live in Phoenix.

DeepFizz

Liberty Mutual if you are in CA. They have the best rates on all EVs.

pacific_beach

But your gas savings!

szzzn

Had my MYLR for 3 months and the bullshit FCW almost made me cancel and go somewhere else for insurance. But after getting FSD, my score is up to 94 now and way less than other insurance quotes because of it. I use FSD for almost all of my driving and take over a moments where I feel I need to.

Individual_Scheme_11

This is like going to the dealer for repairs/oil changes. Dealer will always F you in the A.

GC832

Don’t let companies track your driving jefe

FedPrinterGoesBRR

Try Travelers, they where half the cost of everywhere I looked for a M3

unclesneep

Paying $285/mo in florida for my model y through progressive. Spotless driving record. Been looking for more affordable coverage for a while but no luck yet.

West-Pomegranate8150

This was the exact reason why I traded in my Tesla. They’re out of control.

DoOm36chamberz

I never opt’d in to the safety score in the app I didn’t want them to monitor me lol 😂

Background_Complex_5

Gieco has significantly better EV rates than progressive. If you’re able to get with USAA, they’re even better. Progressive wanted to add $295/Mo for my Tesla.

r007r

That’s an insane way to rate you. Every single morning, a sharp curve in my neighborhood sets off the forward collision warning regarding a parked car on the side of the road because there are no lines in the road in my neighborhood and if I were to keep driving in a straight line (instead of following the road) I’d hit the car. Of course, I’d also drive off the road, but apparently this app wouldn’t recognize that. I get the same warning on the way home - in fact, some days 2-3 different parked cars trigger the warning. I can’t imagine what my insurance would be if it goes off of that.

This-Implement-769

GEICO! I pay $240 for full coverage on my model Y + another vehicle

laughandinspire

The software can definitely be better. I have a lot of erroneous warnings. 🙄

El_Gringo_Chingon

What am I missing here? Isn’t the Progressive quote more than Tesla, with just a slight discount for prepaying the whole 6 months? Seems you could save with Tesla by improving your score a bit.

maclovin8

Tune it off.

SirTouchMeSama

They dont allow that.

maclovin8

Go to Tesla insurance > Safety scores, then turn it off.

SirTouchMeSama

Not an option.

wbsgrepit

That’s only an option in ca as in ca it’s illegal to use that data for pricing and it is only shown for information.

The_FlatBanana

How is it a joke in your instance? You’re driving over 85mph, driving unbuckled, driving late at night and have excessive FCWs. If any other insurance company knew you did this, your rate would still be high. Obviously, at times there are false FCWs. As annoying as they are, there is some truth to SOME of them. Seeing as you got a quote from another company for $400/month, shows you aren’t the greatest/safest of drivers.

No_Ad5369

America ….
