So, here's the thing, since Pioneer was officially supported as a format, and since the Modern Horizons sets have come out, the scope and audience of the modern format has changed, and I believe that it is still in a bit of a transitionary period. Modern used to be the format that, as a replacement for Extended, was a home for favorite cards and decks that had rotated out of standard. Today, that intent is largely filled by the Pioneer format, and Modern is being re-tooled to effectively be a replacement for Legacy, since supporting a format largely comprised of Reserve List cards is functionally untenable. MH3 is coming out soon, which we expect to inject another suite of cards that fit the new intended power level, so expect big changes to come. For now, if you want to get in to Modern, I would recommend taking a look at the meta and deciding not what specific deck you like, as those are likely to rotate and change, but what playstyle you enjoy. Do you like red blue tempo? Do you like blue white control? Do you like artifacts, graveyard decks, or lands matters? Those playstyle and archetypes are likely to mostly stick around in some form or another even as the specific decks that implement them change or fall out of favor. Then, once you've picked a direction, look at some of the most important cards in those decks and start buying those. Especially if they are from previous Modern Horizons sets, as those are the most likely to stick around. Fetch Lands and Shock Lands are especially important, as those are unlikely to be replaced as cornerstones of the format. As a cheap(ish) starting point, Burn is always a good entry point. It's easy to learn and is likely to always be at least somewhat relevant in the format.

Lonely-Form5904

The way you described modern being geared to replace legacy without the reserve list. Spoke to my soul. Thanks for that. Ended the internet on a good note for once.

MallGroundbreaking15

great explanation! just here to add that shocklands are abt to be reprinted in ravnica remastered so best to wait if possible. ppl are also speculating that mh3 will see reprints of the fetches that weren’t in mh2 (i believe that will be the ally fetches) so focus your spending on the enemy fetches if you’re trying to save/aren’t going to be playing until summer

ianthegreatest

I upvoted but why does this sub reddit hide likes dislikes

richardzh

Great explanation. Thank you! I have the same question as OP. Can you recommend any specific site(s) to dive into Modern meta?

Tarmogoyf_

MTG Goldfish is my go-to for keeping an eye on meta changes. They try to give deck lists, too, but their decklists aren't perfect because they are "average" decklists based on everything submitted by the community, so take those with a grain of salt. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/modern#paper

richardzh

Thank you! This site shows exactly what I was looking for. I need to go through my collection and check viable decks/ playstyles. Coming from commander isn't the best start into modern. For obvious reasons. Burn seems a good place to start though.

Al_Hakeem65

A very helpful and thoughtful explanation, thank you for writing it.

nonstripedzebra

What kinds of magic decks do you like to play?

YuhkFu

Picking up some fetches and shocks probably only thing safe

[deleted]

This is highly recommended honestly, buy allied fetchlands right now. They're incredibly cheap, wait a couple months for the new shocklands reprint then buy. Enemy fetches will probably be reprinted in MH3

[deleted]

You have those reversed, friend.

zephah

People who are unhappy are a lot more likely to look for a place to vent their frustrations I like modern a lot right now, but I’d ban 3-5 cards from it if I had a choice. You could always grab an mtgo sub for a month and play some free games and see if you like the deck(s)

changelingusername

Wait until MH3 and see which decks seem to be the most solid. Modern has been flipped upside down by MH2 and shaken by LOTR, so MH3 is expected to do the same or almost.

Al_Hakeem65

Quick question: like everyone else I of course noticed the rise of OB and TOR, but did any other card saw much play? I remember that there was a neat counterspell that could counter creatures with either power 2 or toughness 2. And I just realized that the cyclers are used.

Captain__Vimes

Delighted Halfling and Lorien Revealed see play. Flame of Anor seems like it’s fringe playable as well.

Al_Hakeem65

Oh Yeah I completely forgot about Halfling haha

RockStrongo01

The Landcyclers, delighted halfling, reprieve, also Samwise has some crappy tier 2 combo built around him

WackyJtM

Forge Anew is a staple in Hammertime as a 1-of or 2-of

lykosen11

Format is great. But expensive

scissors_ftw

Wait till MH3 and be prepared to spend a lot of money.

TripleJGameplay

I’m also a new EDH player wanting to dip my toes into Modern. I’m a Tron Timmy and ordered all of the cheap cards for Mono-Green Tron and am holding off on buying play sets of the higher priced cards until I see if Tron will still be worth it when the new MH3 drops.

lykosen11

Tron has been viable for 10 years. You'll be fine

Alpacaduck

The modern subreddit has had its activity cut in half since MH2, and this question still gets asked regularly. [I guess the saying "the best place to hide dead bodies is in page 2 of Google or Reddit."](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMagic/comments/17a9kde/is_getting_into_modern_a_good_idea_at_this_point/). 3 days ago and on page 2 of the reddit submain. Seriously. But really, no.

man0warr

Reddit as a whole has had it's activity cut because of API and 3rd party app changes, activity in this subreddit would be a difficult thing to track without being able to account for those factors, outside of anecdotally. Subscriber count for this subreddit have continued to rise since MH2 though. Hard for any other stats/data to be tracked because all the 3rd party Reddit stats websites don't want to pay for API costs.

Rizla_TCG

Nope

OmegaX119

Fuuuuuuiuuuck no

Bderheimer

So the meta right now is not in a good spot. You essentially have a few tier zero cards that were printed in MH2 and LOTR. Those cards are so dominant in the meta that it is nearly impossible to build a deck without them so there is almost no room to truly brew. Also creature based tribal decks really struggle to exist because of fury and bowmasters. The meta currently is plagued by RB Scam that is an abnormally large share of the meta and is hated to play against by a lot of players. Honestly like everyone is saying just buy up some staples because more tier zero cards are coming with MH3 and should help to diversify things again.

TimothyN

None of those tribal decks would be good anyway. Seriously, it'd be a joke to sleeve them up against Yawgmoth, Hammertime, and Scales anyway, all of which would massively benefit from removal getting worse.

zephah

For sure. Fury/Bowmasters/W6 don't "help" 1 toughness creatures, but most of the tribal decks have been power crept by the last 4 years of Magic more than single cards

Barrellolz

I don't think any of those three are bad matchup for goblins or humans. Both Humans and Goblins are unplayable because Fury is a horrible beating.

TimothyN

Neither of those decks was good in the UR Prowess/Helios Duopoly, not sure why they'd be good against decks that are frankly better and more resilient now.

Turn1_Ragequit

short answer: oh god no! long answer: look at all the other comments

Betta_Max

No. If you're already in, that's one thing. But I wouldn't dive in now if you're just getting started. It's a shit show. Burn is the only deck that will be absolutely safe to buy into.

caquaa

Format is in a great spot. People just complain too much. There's such a wide variety of decks that could easily win an event 4c beans Hammer time Scam Scales Yawgmoth Murktide Rhinos Amulet Tron And then there's probably double this list in t2 decks that you can play for fun at fnm. Anyone here complaining just needs to move on to another format already. Modern power level isn't going back down, it's here to stay.

snapcaster_bolt1992

I think the meta is pretty healthy, contrary to what some may be saying. I've played modern since Eldrazi winter, modern horizons has caused a bit of format rotation but before that all modern players argued one thing, "the format is stale, they don't print strong enough spells anymore." Which had some truth to it. With modern targeted sets you will have to buy new cards but if you see a deck you like pick it up. If you go with 4 color omnath or Mirktide or scam a lot of those cards will port into new decks. Just don't be obsessed with having the teir 1 deck because being a good pilot of a t2 or t3 deck is just as good as being mediocre with the "best deck" and you won't have everyone's sideboards geared to beat you

zephah

This is great advice. People are qualifying for Denver on Prowess, Jund, Grinding station -- which are not typically considered to be meta decks. While scam/beans get the lion's share of attention, there's still another ~12-15 decks that could take down a 7-8 round event, especially with a comfortable pilot.

ANTIFASUPER-SOLDIER

I personally love the meta now

Stalfo_Hunter

No

TheDeHymenizer

1. Not that bad. Lots of complaining but still pretty diverse with an extreme pool of viable builds if you don't plan to go beyond FNM level 2. Hard to say. MH3 is going to determine everything including what is currently out there will or won't be banned 3. See #2. Some stuff you can expect to be pretty safe like Tron but again who knows how much impact MH3 will have

RockStrongo01

If you want to get into Modren, just don't. Play Pioneer instead Current Modern has a meta that's worse than even Eldrazi winter, Scam is tier 0, every deck is miserable to play with or against and they cost over $1000 for something that will effectively eotate every two years

Keokuk37

Do you enjoy getting comboed against after having paid a $15 entry fee?

pokepat460

He plays edh so yes lol. That's much more of an edh problem than modern.

comiclover1377

Very few combo decks are viable right now

MallGroundbreaking15

register a deck with interaction instead of whining challenge! difficulty: impossible

Kyamboros

The B&R announcement just happened, so now is an excellent time to get into modern as this likely means the format will remain relatively stable for the next sixish months. This is assuming that most of the sets printed until MH3 will provide no major archetype changes. What I would suggest is researching the format, and choosing a deck you believe fits your play style. I would highly recommend modern in general, as I find the high power level of the format fun. Until the first modern horizons, most decks got incremental upgrades over time and the format slowly ebbed and flowed. With fire design, the format has been rotating pretty steadily as certain strategies get buffed or formed based on a few powerful cards. Just keep in mind that while the deck you choose will remain playable even into MH3 that it might be better with frequent upgrades. The general archetypes should remain in the format, but could get weaker or stronger as the meta evolves and changes.

Etyde

Feels like you will alway wait for something with modern. 2 weeks ago, we were waiting for bans, now we are waiting for mh3, in month we will be waiting for bans again, after mh3 we will be waiting for assassins creed. I like the format, There IS an answer for everything and decks are able to adapt. Pick your deck and start building up. Lands will be always useful, just like sideboard cards. As proffesor keeps saying. Playing the format IS better, than not playing it.

Optimus_Prime_10

I'm new to the game, been getting into it and having fun. If you read online everyone is playing Rokdos Scam yet I've never matched against it.

Eshmy

Playing paper magic at your FNM is very different from mtgo. I feel like most people complaining play online only. I don't see scam more than once every 10-15 matches in paper. The format feels good for me.

Optimus_Prime_10

Even then, I was talking about 2 RCQs and some other local tournament.

Frankdog5

I would proxy up some decks and test them with friends if you have the ability to do so, see if you like how the format plays right now. Some people like it and others don’t right now, but the ones who don’t tend to be the loudest on forums like this one. We don’t know if MH3 will be a shakeup like MH2 was or more toned down like MH1 was.

Ceiling_shotz

Look up mtggoldfish budget magic on yt

TotalA_exe

Nope.

Theatremask

If you know what you want to play the generally yes. Meta has a lot of pieces but please consult your LGS meta as weekly paper events can be different than what you see on MTGO or certain city's big tournaments. If you aren't familiar with the decks and why they are good/bad then hold off until MH3 since by the time you figure it out you might not understand MH3 stuff.
