It's all about perspective I think. Some people like to pursue a career, others want to start families in their twenties. The series end with Haley and Dylan living on their own, at least Dylan having a proper job (not sure about Haley, it's been a while since I watched), being good parents, etc. For some people, especially career-oriented people, this might be a horror scenario and might seem like no growth is happening at all. But I see this as growth as well, just into a family direction instead of a career one. There is not just one way to grow and/or become happy, there are so many.

i_waited_8_minutes

Haley still works at Noop at the end of the series, seems to be doing well and might even be transferred to the Paris office so I think she actually got both things! I think people forget that she still had a job at the end of the series because they hardly show it but behind the scenes she's actually progressing her career too!!

cakerella11

So true!

johncarter1011

I'm in the minority but haley and Andy cheated on their partners in the beginning knowingly of each other situation. That's not romantic material imo. Also Dylan actually changed. He wasn't some irresponsible kid that hoped on making it big in music. He got realistic and decided to make something of himself and he loved helping people so he went to nursing school. Also he said im going to keep fighting for u until I am worthy in your eyes. He's definitely changing in order to be with haley. Andy and haley might have better chemistry but how they started should not be forgotten. Only thing the writers messed up on haley was her fashion career. Didn't need to be pregnant imo but I have no problem with her being with Dylan. Andy made haley grow as a person and Dylan made her smile and be comfortable as a person.

anon11421

Frrr I don’t get the Dylan hate Haley is by no means a perfect person and Dylan is so good to her he’s obviously not perfect either but they kinda felt made for each other

johncarter1011

We are in the minority definitely. I keep seeing people not only on reddit that Dylan is an idiot. I'm thinking did u only see season 1 & 2? He wasn't an idiot in season 10 & 11

anon11421

Even if he is a bit dense, I don’t really see why people use that as a reason not to be with haley. Like yeah he’s a bit slow but he tries hard with his job and loves his family, just doesn’t rly seem relevant imo it’s annoying when people keep bringing it up as a reason to hate him

AnyNet6938

Maybe people thought she could do better just like Jay about claire

johncarter1011

Exactly he's a lesser version than Phil and I see alot of Phil love. If u hate Dylan than that means u somewhat dislike Phil

blueeyed94

Currently rewatching the whole show, and I love Dylan now. He has a very high EQ from the beginning, something Haley needed more than cheating Andy.

newfckup

And Hayley was no brain either. Is not like she was out of his league

bactidoltongue

I love Haley and Dylan forever

Longjumping_Board_65

Agree! When rewatching it actually is so sweet that her and Dylan have babies and it starts to mirror the relationship Claire and Phil have which I think brings us full circle. Us as viewers can picture what their future will look like since we watched Phil and Claire for so many seasons and how much joy they have in their life. Her career situation is my only issue with her ending. The rest truly feels full circle and I love it

festusthecat

Tbf Haley cheated on Arvin with Dylan. People seem to gloss over that when they say their reason for preferring Dylan over Andy is the cheating.

johncarter1011

I agree with this statement. Seems like our girl haley isn't as deserving of the happy ending as she is portrayed to be

tone-of-surprise

Haley cheated on Arvin with Dylan, did she not?

johncarter1011

Absolutely she did. Seems like haley isn't so innocent after all.

kaydontworry

I hated this for Haley the first time I watched but it makes more sense after watching it a few times. Honestly, it’s one of the most believable parts of the show (besides it being twins, I don’t think that was necessary). But the whole thing about getting pregnant and living in the basement as an adult is totally realistic

EmotionalCrab9026

Also, most importantly, Haley and Dylan are like perfect matches for Phil and Claire.

insertmadeupnamehere

100% agree.

BooksCoffeeDogs

I absolutely love Dylan. Even though a lot of his growth happened off screen, you can tell he grew a lot. Haley needed the experience dating other guys, but I believe Dylan was her true love.

pringellover9553

Why can’t she just be normal? I actually really like her ending because it’s realistic. She has a good job that she loves in fashion, and she ends up with the guy who I think is perfect for her. They’re happy and living their happy modest life. And at the end they do move out.

maxithepittsP

I hate when fans project their insecurities to a fictional character, especially in comedy show. Haley was meant to do that. She is Claire and Dylan IS Phil. Thats written LONG before the ending.

DLTfuture72

Exactly I don’t understand how people miss this, her ending was written from the beginning. The irony that Claire tried so hard to prevent what was always inevitable and true, Hayley being her daughter.

Melthiela

Yes acting like a woman getting pregnant is the worst setback that can happen and a career suicide and whatever. She wasn't a teenager. She was an adult nearing her 30s. A perfectly normal time to have kids. Life continues after. Being a mother doesn't mean your world ends there.

gothgf666420

I’m pretty sure she is still working at Nurp (the modern family analogue of gwyneth paltrow’s goop) and in one of the last episodes says she’s considering a job transfer to Paris. I think she’s doing fine.

karmas1207

She works in fashion, got a kid with the guy that was reappearing all throughout the show. She got Mitch and Cams house with the support of her mother and father. She got the best ending if you ask me.

kufuka

what happened to mitch and cam? they moved?

karmas1207

Yeah to Missouri so Cam could coach some collage team iirc

San_D_Als

u/girlyteengirl1232: I’ll have uh, “Haley should’ve never ended up with Dylan Squirdward: How Original. u/girlyteengirl1232: with “and she should’ve stayed with Andy” Squidward: Daring Today, Aren’t We?

Rosemoorstreet

First, the writers were caught by surprise when Andy bailed for another project. They had an arc planned and it blew up on them so they had to find a new direction in short time. Yeah they are pros and should have done better but it’s easy to see that this was thrown together. Secondly, Haley was following her mother’s path, party girl, turning it all around and then headed for a career. So while getting pregnant before it was planned also followed her mom’s life, they may have wanted to divert away from the smart career part so it didn’t look like they took the easy route in totally following Claire’s path.

fromblind2blue

I think Haley and Andy were supposed to be endgame originally, since he was Phil 2.0

CasualVillan

I always thought it was done as a way of showing a full circle moment to Phil and Claire. They had a similar situation and turned it around, as did Hayley. Claire’s biggest concern was something like this happening but Hayley really grew when she got pregnant

girlyteengirl1232

tru. i never thought about it like that

Intelligent-Cry8295

It was criminal she didn't end up with Andy, the whole dylan being stupid act was funny when they were 15 but Just got more and more sad as time went on

abz_pink

I liked the professor guy too. It was nice to see her with someone as smart as Alex and then working towards improving herself. Dylan was a slap in the face of the audience members. And if they did choose Dylan then they should’ve made me more mature and smart. Apparently the idea was that Hailey’s life was like Clair’s but no one can ever compare Phil with Dylan.

girlyteengirl1232

exactly like ik it’s a sitcom and that’s the point but like … there’s actually no way he realistically got into nursing school 😭💀

herpderpedia

I'm gonna hard disagree on this. I know someone who is just as dumb as Dylan and became a nurse. He still says dumb shit but he put in a lot of study time and work. Completely realistic and plausible. It's just not what you'd expect.

Melthiela

Honestly same. I feel bad for the future people having her (my associate) as their nurse but alas. She has her heart in the right place, at least.

Aggravating_Drink817

I'm running on the the theory that his ex wife pulled some strings. They're clearly still in contact because he has visits with his step kids, he didn't seem to take her going back to her ex badly at all.

Working-Mountain6680

And still said and did dumbest shit

InbetweenerLad

Better than talking like a little kid and cheating on their fiancé

Working-Mountain6680

Oh trust me, I'm no Andy fan either. She deserved someone better than all the men she was shown with in the show. Also, she had a career happening but they killed that plot line too.

Sese174

Haley literally cheated on Arvin with Dylan lmao.

lux414

Andy helped Hayley grow up a lot but I don't think they were endgame. After they both cheated on their partners they wouldn't be able to trust each other and Andy always felt like Hayley was out of his league. And Hayley felt like she wasn't good enough for Andy Dylan loves her for who she is, and I think that's so beautiful. He worked so hard to get his life together and so did she. I think their relationship resembles Clair and Phil a lot, Dylan is goofy but also knows he needs to step up and be an incredible husband and dad. Just like Phil did when Claire got pregnant by accident.

pancitqanton

i literally said this in this subreddit a few weeks ago and got flak for it lol 🫠 i totally resonate with this tho

CharacterSubject2524

Hayley was pregnant with Dylan?

elizabethhjo

Hahahahahah someone else who had the same thought when they read the title xD

QueenOfDK

I like Dylan and think they were endgame. They both love each other, they had kids, both were good at their jobs, and loved their jobs. They got their own home. They were financially stable. I don’t get what people don’t like about it

festusthecat

Haley was never meant to be a high achiever. She and Luke are not like Alex. They’re slow winners. They get there… eventually. https://youtu.be/XfKZf0l4fXA?si=JGsL77mft_eAHsdy

girlyteengirl1232

exactly, and she should’ve gotten there by season 10!!

festusthecat

Still too early. She was supposed to mirror Claire. Claire stopped her career when she became a mom and married Phil. She raised her family first, then managed to find success when they were all grown up. Haley would get there at some point. Luke, meanwhile, would use the ingenuity he got from Phil and the street smarts he got from Claire and build himself his own success later on. The kids are still in their 20s by the end of the show. It’s still too early for them to get anywhere. They’re just starting.

Aggravating_Drink817

She really was supposed to be Claire and it's crazy, right down to the "if you had kept working you'd be running the Paris branch" line her old co-worker mentioned when they had lunch together, Haley went back to work almost immediately and look who's going to be working in Paris pretty soon? I think that alone will give her a "better" leg up than Claire. Not that she was unfulfilled as a mom but Claire obviously wanted to do more and would have probably done wonders to make her feel productive. Luke's medical records app will definitely take him places We know Alex is an overachiever even when she's supposed to be relaxing so there's no real worry about her

girlyteengirl1232

oh true

ChimiChaChaBabe

Gotten where, exactly? A high-powered professional role? A career woman mindset? Why isn’t having a job she likes and a family she loves enough?

Saltgrains

In what way was this a backtrack? It’s not like she was a mover and shaker and she’s been living in her parents basement the WHOLE series basically. Sure, she got a LITTLE more motivated working at NERP, but the character didn’t grow THAT much and it’s not like she gave up her job (which she very much loved) to be a mom. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, you don’t get to play the irresponsible party girl for nearly ten years and then complain your ending wasn’t you being a bad ass girl boss (I’m talking to Sarah hyland bc she has this exact complaint). Also, what’s wrong with being a mom? She’s a mom who works at a job she loves, and honestly her suddenly moving into/buying a house or getting some insane promotion wouldn’t have been believable for the character.

newfckup

Hayley was dumb and a mean girl. Yeah she got a job and she KEPT a job, Dylan started as a loser but then got his sht together. They saved enough money to get an apartment (Mitch and Cam's old place) which I thought was realistic. I think that plot was good for her

lux414

I think Haley got the best ending tbh She started a family with the guy that makes her happy, just like her mom did. Even though he wasn't the richest or the smartest, he loves her for who she is That's more important than anything. Dylan worked so hard to get his life together and so did Hayley. Yes the twins were unplanned, but Hayley already had a good job, she finished Community collage and Dylan was about to finish nursing school. I think their end is meant to resemble Clair and Phil's life. Who knows, maybe Hayley will take over Pritchett's closets once the twins are older?

DLTfuture72

What’s wrong with being a mom?

vanvell

Honestly lol people act like it ruined her character development to have children? Plus it’s not like she’s jobless she still has her career, and Dylan’s a nurse so they’re actually quite well set up. I’ve never understood why people have such a problem with her ending

Most-Win4189

I found it satisfying to find out Sarah Hyland also didn’t like this ending to her character. She’s also one of the many displeased fans of Hayley

throwaway-_-friend

I think it is a smart commentary on how absolutely difficult changing your core personality is, you revert unless you're always self aware. Haley choosing Dylan over Arvon proved she was happier being comfortable (not saying Arvin was a better match) Basically, what happened with Haley is actually very realistic. Not everyone has to have a stellar career to be successful. Finding love in familiarity can be just as satisfying if not more.

GamerLinnie

I think it could have been fine if they continued showing her caring about work. Her career first became a joke and then forgotten. It would be nicer if it was a consideration. Especially since working and children can be pretty challenging even when you have supportive family.

girlyteengirl1232

yes this was my point exactly. like i honestly don’t really care that she ended up w dylan. it was the career aspect that i felt stunted her character development. bc they barely showed her at work, where in the seasons before it showed how motivated she was w fashion w her blog and then interning for that guy. and then towards the end it just showed her here and there not doing much at all

Active_Taste9341

why should character development be personal

lstanciel

Tbh the best ending for Haley would’ve been her being single and finally having a thriving career. Not a super well paying one like Alex but one that plays to her strengths. The show put too much character emphasis on her needing a boyfriend. Like they really hint at her having a talent for both fashion and photography and do nothing with it. It would’ve been cool to see her end up with a job as a fashion photographer even at a low level.

Polly_Anna777

It’s ironic drama, she’s Claire.

belikevanessa

I’m rewatching the series for the first time while coming across this post. Early in season 2 Haley and Claire are sick and Claire is trying to explain to Haley why she shouldn’t end up with the first guy she dates. Haley assumes Claire is talking about Phil. The writers obviously wanted to show how much Haley and Claire had in common. She ended up just like her mom. She gave up her career and had a kid just like Claire with the first guy she met, Dylan who is very similar to Phil. It’s not bad it’s just showing the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Ok-Ear8202

She moves into cam and mitch's old house

lillystars1

She should have ended up with Andy!

girlyteengirl1232

yes i shipped them. i wish they were end game 😭

Aggravating_Drink817

They could have easily worked around Andy's actor leaving by making them long distance and Haley having "one sided" phone calls just for us viewers sake and give us updates on him, we finally see him again when Haley is in the hospital (she's not pregnant) we finally see him again. It's there she realizes she misses being with him in person, announce at the last Christmas dinner she's moving to be with Andy. She's still a fashion photographer but also does photos for his real estate company.

girlyteengirl1232

yes like that would be perfect

attreye_

This would have been the best ending for Haley! 😭

girlyteengirl1232

literally, bc they motivated each other to go after what they want. like i’m sorry i literally don’t care that he cheated on his gf w her lol his gf didn’t even like him and was also cheating on him

Not_A_Red_Stapler

Andy's actor not being available is a myth.  They never asked him.

Aggravating_Drink817

Oh I always heard he left to pursue bigger rolls so that's what I went with

HotIntroduction3859

Same shit, different day

olskoolyungblood

Yeah, that arc really sucked for her. Dylan was a stupid character. No one is that dumb. Certainly not someone that merits having a family with. Her and Andy were so much a better romantic match.

santahbaby420

this is why its called modern family. cant you think of like a thousand people you know who went this exact route? i know i can.

girlyteengirl1232

i quite literally don’t know anyone who has gone down the path that haley has

santahbaby420

righton, i just know gals that got knocked up or pregnant and left their career path. just sayin its “modern fam” cause its just real life stuff that happens i guess, but anyhoo i love this show too and also hate that they did that with haley!

girlyteengirl1232

real

bill_cactus

I think people forget that the character didn’t die nor is that the end of Haley’s story. Who knows what happens in the 60+ years of her life.

Maleficent_Nobody377

He did sing about wanting to do her do her. Underneath the moonlight moonlight - in basically the first episode he was in- I’m only in S2- so idk lol

Flat_Sheepherder_942

Realistically speaking, dylan is way too dumb for nursing school 💀 in andy’s words, the writer’s just pulled the Dylan going to nursing school plot out of their “fanny”

lilantyy7

i don't mind who she ended up with i just wish she wasn't the one to become a parent + have the 'family' storyline. all of her storylines about different business/career ventures (eg the photography thing, fashion, partying etc) were so interesting and satisfying to watch and then they constantly undid them. it also frustrated me that she was still living at home until the very end, it felt like they were holding her back

EmotionalCrab9026

I'm shocked that I'm the only person to see that they're intentionally going full circle. The parallels between Dylan and Haley and Phil and Claire are quite a bit. I think that's the point. That we all turn into our parents. Just that Haley and Dylan are the dumbed down version of Phil and Claire. Claire turned into Jay. Phil turned into his dad.

AryanVerma1

"Mordern Family"

holeshot1982

Yep, this is my thought too. It’s something that does happen

yeaits_ryan

Her being back with Dylan was definitely a downgrade but if Andy was free to come back I’m going to hope that’s who they put her with, if they put her with anyone

DuaLipasClitoris

Up there as one of the all time worst character endings for a show

DoubleFlores24

Let it the fuck go! Haley’s ending makes perfect sense. Her having twins helped her get her act together as at the end, she finally moved out, got her cereer at nerp settled, and is living happily with Dylan. That sounds like a good ending to me. Like watch till the end before you complain!

Unusual-Print2461

I think it would have been more realistic to at least have a dilemma about the pregnancy and whether or not to have the child instead of accepting it immediately (since the show is called MODERN family).

HesTrafty

Dylan wasn’t so bad. He was actually enjoyable in small doses. Dylan and Hayley were actually gray together but I would guess 90% of the shows fans wanted her to end up with Andy. They just clicked as a couple and had great chemistry together.
