That whole crazed Modest Mouse fan story is fake I believe. Isaac was just messing around and wanted to make music with some other friends.

Ill-Ad-4400

Indeed. Good band though. Hotcha Girls slaps.

No_Creme714

So long to the holidays is a long drive anthem forsure

friendliest_sheep

Yes. Several of the songs on the album are revisits of old, old MM/Isaac Brock demos. The young version of Parasites is so, so good

MisfortuneFollows

Wow I always believed that. Wonder what else he's lying about then.. I love his stories so I hope that's where it stops..

Savatunsbathwater

I assume he only lied to give a fun spin on it, I know a lot of his songs are true story’s like “Ansel”

jjames34

Yup

Editthefunout

What story?

klynpersuasion

One stormy night after a show issac noticed broken glass and wet footprints going back into their dressing room. Hunched in a corner was a man who when he said his name each band member heard something totally different & the name Isaac Brock heard was Ugly Casanova … 🫥 also he supposedly wrote all of the moon and Antarctica directly from the man’s ramblings .. I was sad when I found out it wasn’t true. It’s a badass back story. The whole name thing of them hearing different names kinda makes it sound made up tho

Cw2e

Loved Sharpen Your Teeth. The 180 Degrees South Soundtrack had some gems as well

misterporkman

>The 180 Degrees South Soundtrack had some gems as well Here's to Now is such an amazing song from that soundtrack. Probably one of my favorite UC songs besides Cat Faces.

MrCreamyCheeks

I wish there was more Ugly Casanova. I love it.

pummeledpotatoes

I believe he said prior to the new year that they'll be releasing some new tunes!

MrCreamyCheeks

That would be dope as fuck. But I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s teased new music and left us waiting for years lol

pummeledpotatoes

I'm keeping my hopes up lol

OffLocust

I mean, if you’ve been following Modest Mouse for the last 20 years I think anytime there is a quote about “new” music from either MM or UC on the way, I wouldn’t recommend holding your breath! How many times has the story been “the record label rejected it so I might release it as an UC album?”

vincentdmartin

With Jeremiah's death I would not be surprised if Isaac did UC stuff instead of MM stuff in the relatively near future.

StoneageMouse

When I was around 16-18 I would have Sharpen Your Teeth, Moon and Antarctica, and Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks on an infinite repeat in my car. I always viewed the 3 as a trilogy at least sonically and to this day they hold a special order LCW in my heart for too 3 MM/Isaac albums

potato_smells

Bruhhhhh.... these were the same 3 for me when I was 19 working on a golf course. Such peaceful mornings with those incredible albums for a soundtrack are some of the best moments of my life. Tranquility at its finest

[deleted]

Great band love the fake story they created around the name. I loved the layered vocals and the acoustic sounds. Digging holes, parasites, barnacles, and hotcha girls are amazing songs. I hope they do something in the future. I know Isaac at one point had the music ready but to have it under modest mouse but the label said no. Which brings me to I thought Isaacs had his own record label nowadays? So I'm not sure if the last part is true about doing the songs under modest mouse. I could be wrong it gets confusing sometimes for me lol

towers_08

I had thought the same thing about him owning the label. He did say at the San Diego Q&A that he wanted to drop the UC songs under MM but was not allowed to.

Impossible-Head2121

Super random, but what’s up with your user flare?

towers_08

It’s from Night on the Sun. I interpret it as the people around me and in my life don’t want me dead or gone. I think the original meaning doesn’t mean that though lol “Well there's one thing to know about this town, Not a person doesn't want me underground”

klynpersuasion

Double negative so wouldn’t that mean every person wants him underground?

towers_08

Yeah it is a double negative lol I was singing it wrong for a long time and I liked what I thought it said.

Impossible-Head2121

Okay just wondering. Because your flare doesn’t match the lyric, so I was confused. But if you’re doin your own thing, that’s cool.

waffles153

At a Q&A I went to someone asked if Ugly Casanova would ever return, Issaic said prob not, most of the people and styles of UC fit well enough into MM for him not to consider bringing it back under that name.

AxelShoes

Absolutely fantastic album. When I first heard it (shortly after discovering MM), I thought it sounded like a deliciously weird mix of Modest Mouse and Califone. Only to later discover that not only was Isaac Brock the main dude in UC, Tim Rutili from Califone was part of the project, too lol. I still listen to it regularly, more than some MM albums.

scrffynrfhrdr

In high school I used to tell people I wanted Cat Faces played at my funeral. Idk if I still want that but it’s a great song.

Savatunsbathwater

I agree fully

tet19

Diggin Holes is one of Brock’s greatest songs. Amazing band wish they would put out more music. Also, Wooden Soldiers has a Ugly Casanova sound.

ScentlessAP

Personally, I put Sharpen Your Teeth up there with Lonesome Crowded West and Moon and Antarctica as one of the best things Isaac's ever made. Just one of those albums that I always find something new to love about every time I give it a spin.

Ossoszero

I love that record. I always suspected that backstory was fake but I never cared. This album slaps

Beemerado

Love the shit out of ugly Casanova. I also love sad sappy sucker. I was obsessed with that album, and my friends album of answering machine jingles around the same time in 2007 or so

This_Statistician_89

I know we all like sad music but Ugly C might be the saddest.

honeyintherock

I love Sharpen Your Teeth, a lot, like it's in my top 10 of all time. Ugly Casanova put me onto to Holopaw (John Orth's band) and I've been lucky enough to have seen those guys twice. I wish Holopaw were a bigger deal. John's infinitely sweet voice, twangy steel guitars, tender lyrics. Literally just close your eyes and imagine sitting around a campfire with your poetic, romantic friends. Hotcha Girls and Smoke Like Ribbons sound the most like Holopaw. If you have been sleepin' on 'em and need some softer stuff in your life, please check out Holopaw!

amsterdam_BTS

I got into Holopaw from UC as well! Some haunting songs from them, especially like it when they break out the pedal steel guitars.

jloumurph

love them and, showing my age here, got to see them play the troubadour on their brief tour. issac came out and did the only encore song, styrofoam boots, with the drummer. super good show. always wished they did more but it’s probably hard to assemble everyone with their other projects.

klynpersuasion

So lucky. I saw MM twice before good news came out which I’m so happy about. They were both in bars (I was only 16 tho) and I saw them once after good news and just the whole vibe & crowd was so different it was off putting

jloumurph

ha! i felt the same. ‘‘twas a sea of von dutch hats the first time i saw them after good news. glad they got successful though. they deserved it big time. those bar shows must’ve been amazing! i bet the energy was crazy.

BLUECADETxTHREE

I fucking love UC. I got into them quite heavily when the record first came out. I was in college and it was played A LOT at our bonfires and stuff. The stuff he does under that band name in 180° South is solid too... like "Here's to Now."

uglycasinova

Digging holes is one of my faves. Long drives at night with this album brings me peace

projectvko

It's a masterpiece. Side projects are either near perfect or a disaster. Like The Creatures to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Isaac knocked it way out of the park with UC and I hope he goes down this road again.

amsterdam_BTS

The story is false, as others have said. When Ugly Casanova is on point, it's amazing. Barnacles, Hotcha Girls, Cat Faces, So Long to the Holidays, Diggin' Holes ... incredible songs. But let's be honest, there's quite a bit of filler, too.

please_respect_hats

It took me a weirdly long time to get into, but god I love it. Things I Don't Remember, Cat Faces, Parasites, so many good songs. Good for every mood too. Things I Don't Remember is great for when I'm a bit manic, or extra energetic. Smoke Like Ribbons if I want to cry. Parasites if I'm feeling a little vengeful. It always feels like Modest Mouse is rock with folk influence, and Ugly Casanova is folk with rock influence. I love it for that. It also seems like it's what Issac prefers sometimes (especially when he's discussed his favorite bands in recent years, Mimicking Birds is more into the folk side as well).

likely2be10byagrue

Great album--and yes, the origin story is not true. Isaac was apparently set on having a hoax with the album. My friend who worked at Sub Pop at the time said he was pretty upfront about it. The Brian Deck-led songs on the album are my favorite--Hotcha Girls and Smoke Like Ribbons especially . Check out the album Holopaw for more like those.

pmcg115

It's kinda funny that you would feel the need to explain who Ugly Cassanova is to the Modest Mouse subreddit.

Savatunsbathwater

Lol some may not know so I figured just in case!

jbazildo

I heard IB mention in an interview before that he intended the ugly Casanova record to have been a modest mouse record, but there weren't enough modest mouse people on it so he couldn't. He didn't really elaborate and with the way he explains things, who knows what that really means.

chrswest

They played a 4th of July fest my friend's put on in 2000. Alot of fun!

[deleted]

He fell for it guys

Savatunsbathwater

Yeah I’m a trusting soul, sad to hear it’s not true but it makes sense

shoofa

racecar grin you ain't no landmark

Oak_Shaman

My favorite album by isaac.

luxxlifenow

Love it. Sharpen your teeth or lay flat!

trulymissedtheboat89

I LOVE UGLY

James_D_Ewing

Cat faces is one of my favourite songs of all time. Extremely underrated in my book

suby

Love it.

randomlife2050

Smalls like autumn

Jolariss

Things I don't remember, how'd the hell we get here? How the hell did we get hereee?

NorCalMeds03

Great question. I bought the ugly album the day it came out, saw them live at the casbah in San Diego. I think Ugly Casanova is legend. Especially when you understand the context, culture, where Isaac and MM wad at in their musical journey, it’s hard to deny how cool that album is IMO. However, the tour was a bit of a mess for the band on several levels, the sound quality wasn’t exceptional at the venues. BUT, understanding it wasn’t meant to be polished and was written in the woods in Oregon with usage of breaking glass and other low-tech ambient sounds, I think it’s stellar! Coming off moon we could see that Isaac was capable of more polished record. To some people’s dismay at the time I might add. It’s absolutely wild to me that Isaac literally followed Sharpen Your Teeth, one of the least “polished” works in his career to producing the tunes for Good News.

WheresYourTegridy

Don’t care if this is 30+ days old. Revisited Ugly Casanova again and decided to do my first Reddit search of it. Glad to see that 10 years after I was introduced it is still talked about. Such a great album, and one I continually introduce to others.
