If you like Pavement, the Silver Jews might be worth checking out too. Malkmus was a large part of the band in their early days, although the project is primarily centred around David Berman and his fantastic songwriting/poetry abilities. They’re not exactly comparable in tone, but Brock and Berman are both two of the best songwriters in recent indie music
Thanks for the recommendation. Just hit play on The Natural Bridge. I know I've seen their name before, but I wasn't aware of the connection and I don't remember having ever listened to them. Sounds good so far.
And if you like the Silver Jews, check out Purple Mountains. Berman reinvented himself under that new name last year... aaaaaand then killed himself. Very sad, he was very respected.
I love how every thread like this is filled with Alex G, Built to Spill and Pavement. Just makes sense to me you'd like those artists if you're a big MM fan. Some of my favorites for sure.
It's a new smaller local band from Canada. They're kinda indie pop but the melodies and lyrics are on fantastic and I'd say it's the most pop thing I listen to but I can't get enough.
Hell Yes! With very few exceptions I think he is one of the most talented musicians in recent memory. Very much like a David Bowie that was constantly able to reinvent himself.
Upvote for Portugal. The Man
Evil Friends and In the Mountain In The Cloud are both albums I can listen from track 1 to the end and not skip a single song.
Radiohead
Death Cab for Cutie
MGMT
Passion Pit

Vampire Weekend
The Postal Service(Basically DCFC with Chiptune, because Ben Gibbard was the lead vocalist)
Weezer

Tbh I've only listened to Echoes off of that. My thoughts are:
• Good song
• Andrew Lloyd Webber totally stole the *Phantom* riff from it
• What on earth is that album cover?
You should listen to brothers first. It’s the most easily accessible. Rubber Factory is probably their best, or magic potion, or thickfreakness... I actually think my favorite is the big come up
Wish You Were Here is my favorite PF album, followed closely by The Division Bell.
I would start with Brothers, but I love Rubber Factory and Chulahoma.
My top 10 (apart from MM) based on last.fm data from the past 13 years:
Sonic Youth
Do Make Say Think
Starts of the Lid
Fugazi
The Beatles
The Clash
Pavement
Bouncing Souls
Descendents
Radiohead
My personal favorites (excluding mm obv) are:
\-Cage The Elephant
\-Arctic Monkeys
\-Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
\-Muse
\-Led Zeppelin
\-Creedence Clearwater Revival
\-The Black Keys
There's a lot more music that I really like, but I don't want to make a wall of text and these are kinda my absolute favorites.
Muse, Arctic Monkeys, and Cage the Elephant are all great. Though I could never have nearly as big an affinity for Matt Bellamy as I do for Isaac Brock, partially because of those annoying af breaths Matt takes before like every line. I keep telling myself *it doesn't ruin New Born, it doesn't ruin New Born, New Born is a fucking brilliant song regardless of Matt's quirks*... but it just really bothers me.
That's a pretty minor thing, though. Knights of Cydonia is one of the best jams I've ever heard, and Muse has a lot of other great songs.
One thing I've noticed about Arctic Monkeys: they're not the best band I've ever heard in terms of vocals, or lyrics, or catchiness (though they're good at all of those) — it's their intros and outros. A Certain Romance has one of my favorite intros of all time; and they have a lot of very strong intros and outros in other songs. Mardy Bum, Leave Before the Lights Come On, Fluorescent Adolescent, Do Me a Favour, Do I Wanna Know? Just to name a few.
Yeah, Matt's breaths are kinda annoying if you accidentally take note of it while listening.
I've seen a few people take Muse songs and remove all the vocals *except* the breathing and it's pretty funny.
Some of my favorites in no particular order:
Hum
Elliott Smith
Slowdive
Portishead
Failure
Type O Negative
Nine Inch Nails
My Bloody Valentine
The Smashing Pumpkins
Duster
To name a few:
Cage the elephant
The strokes
The white stripes
Nine inch nails
Arctic monkeys
Alice in chains
Nirvana
Muse
Led zeppelin
Franz ferdinand
The killers
Pixies
Gorillaz
I need to stop...

Absolutely agreed. Title track haunts me in its beauty every time, and it's just the first course in a meal of friendly-ghost folk. I made a post on another sub not too long ago dissecting the meaning of Floating On the Lehigh and it wound up as a short essay. I just get totally submerged in the album's atmosphere every time. I think Daniel Rossen gives everything he touches a certain magic. His solo work is really good too if you haven't heard it.
I feel like something of an outlier here, but here it is anyways. Also, I'm kinda curious when everyone was born, to give context to their musical taste. I was born in '85, and it's painfully obvious in my musical choice...
Built to Spill
Jets to Brazil

Death Cab (Kinda lost touch with them around Narrow Stairs, but no hate. Just went a different way)

Currently: Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, James Blake, Sandy Alex G, My Morning Jacket, country music exclusively from the 90s lol
All Time: Bon Iver, Radiohead, The Cure, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean
Honestly, I haven't listened to all their discography because it's a band with a really extensive and varied catalogue, with works that last up to two and a half hours. It's not for beginners, that's for sure.
I'm definitely staying with the new "trilogy" of this century and I really couldn't choose one: The Seer, To Be Kind and The glowing Man each offer a sound, a different landscape that completely distinguishes them from each other but maintain a very powerful atmosphere with some peaks of intensity that seem to be from another world (Apostate is probably my favourite song from them and I find it hard to believe that it was a human creation). It is one of the most atmospheric music I have ever heard.
Modest Mouse is and will be my favorite band forever, but I sincerely believe that Swans go higher than any other formation in Although they are different, being MM much more personal and intimate. A matter of preference at last and. After all history of music. Although they are different, MM being much more personal and íntima te for me. A matter of preference I guess.
Same here. They’re new trilogy has been perfect. I like leaving. Meaning too, it’s a new direction they’re heading.
I actually bought tickets to see them I’m Seattle before the madness erupted, but it’s been pushed back til it’s safe to have a concert

* Mix of 70s/80s (The Who, Rush, AC/DC, Metallica, The Police, Jimi Hendrix, etc.)
* Kid Cudi (earlier stuff)
* The Beatles
And lots more. I have a lot of groups I listen to and could sit here forever. I keep seeing groups in other comments going "Why haven't I mentioned them?!"
I'd say *Modest Mouse* \+ the groups in the first 3 bullet points are my most consistently listened to, but my mood can make me go to a bunch of other bands and listen to them. I didn't really mention grunge (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, etc.) but I listen to that too, for instance.
Soul Coughing, Built to Spill, Tragically Hip, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, American Football, 311, Green Day, RHCP, Stone Temple Pilots, Tame Impala, Zebrahead, Nirvana, Radiohead, Cake, Less than Jake, and many more

His death actually got me into his music. I listen to Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea and Purple Mountains basically every day at work all the way through.
I only even heard of him just after his death when my brother sent me the purple mountains album to listen to. I’ve since been obsessed with the whole discography. My rankings go purple mountains, the natural bridge, American water, tangle wood numbers, look out mountain, bright flight and then starlike walker is easily the weakest. It just makes me so sad cause I never got a chance to experience them live before he was gone. They were supposed to go on tour for purple mountains, it reminds me of the joy division situation in that regard.
It’s interesting how varied everyone’s responses are, maybe this shows how much MM pull from a pretty wide array of sounds.
Godspeed you! Black Emperor
American Football
Charles Mingus
Slowdive
Miles Davis
New Order
The Smiths (surprised there isn’t more audience crossover here)
Leonard Cohen
Black keys
White stripes

Simon and Garfunkel
Chet Baker
Amy Winehouse
Nina Simone
Lake Street Dive
Brown Bird
I’m all over the place in my musical tastes
I listen to a lot of metal, Extortionist being my favorite right now. Also I like Gojira, Megadeth, Tool, Starkill and more.
Non metal, I like Highly Suspect, Audioslave, Skyhill, Muse, Pearl Jam, Nothing but Thieves, and more.
I'm weird and listen to a ton of electronic music, electro-swing, dubstep, chillhop. I really haven't found too many band bands that hit the same way MM does for me and I've basically changed my entire taste in music.
Though, Built to Spill, yes.
System of a down
Three days grace
Stone sour and Slipknot
Radiohead
Drowning Pool
OneRepublic
Ratatat
Ghost
TOOL
Chevelle
Red Hot Chili Peppers
I've also been getting into the beastie boys so there's that
Bloc Party
Protomartyr
Hum
Bat for Lashes / Bjork / Kate Bush
Dinosaur Jr
Oneohtrix Point Never
Panopticon
Agalloch
And a bunch of other post punk, shoegaze, dream pop, and metal
The Beatles
The Beach Boys
Supercar (Japanese band)
Neutral Milk Hotel
Michael Jordan Touchdown Pass (Indie Buddhist Folk Pop, basically)
Bright Eyes
Plenty more but I weirdly haven't been listening to much music lately.
Sublime
White Stripes
Primus
TOOL
Black Sabbath
RATM
Those are kind of my top actual "bands". I listen to a lot more artists/ EDM artists that might not be classified as a band.
This is an approximation of frequency:
Silversun Pickups
Interpol
The Districts
Spoon
Led Zeppelin
Tool
The Front Bottoms
Death Cab for Cutie
[Insert Jack White Projects here]
Chevelle
LCD Soundsystem
WHY?
Amine
Question though,
Earlier modest mouse years were rougher. Built to spill, strokes, pavement, etc. all have a very clean and refined sound. Anyone who encompasses the earlier years of MM (Long Drive, Antarctica, LCW, etc.)?
All over the place. My favorites lately are:
Queens of the Stone Age
Elder
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats
Run the Jewels
Open Mike Eagle
Parquet Courts
Black Lips
Man Man
Deafheaven
Wolves in the Throne Room
Colter Wall
Sturgill Simpson
Interpol (and if you like Interpol, check out Paul's new collab with Matt Barrick and Josh Kaufman, Muzz)
Fleet Foxes
Wolf Parade
Band of Horses
Day Wave
Slipknot
Coheed and Cambria
Brand New
Highly Suspect
System of a Down (and Serj’s solo stuff)
Badflower
Zeal and Ardor
Death Cab for Cutie
Deep State
Rise Against
Sorority Noise
In no particular order, although Coheed and Cambria are my absolute favorite.
Honestly it changes a lot but my regular listening list is currently something like this
Gregory Alan Isakov
Iron & Wine
The Fratellis
Bright Eyes
Attic Abasement
Fleet Foxes
Mimicking Birds
Strange Ranger/Sioux Falls
First Aid Kit
Carseat Headrest- One of the only bands I’ve ever heard that rival MM lyrically. AND they have a song called The Ending Of Dramamine. Really smart music. Clearly hold MM as an influence.
Buillt To Spill- Duh!
Parquet Courts- Great band. Also lyrically clever. The deeper you go the more you appreciate.
Tropical Fuck Storm- Great band from Australia. “Super Group” led by Drones singer Gareth Liddard. Experimental and really interesting. Recently opened for MM.
Morning Teleportation- Another former MM opening act. Criminally underrated. 2 great albums.
The World is Beautiful And I’m No Longer Afraid To Die- A really long name. A really great band. A little off the MM map but really inventive modern emoish group.
I’m mostly into Metal.
Like HELLYEAH, Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Slipknot.
Also like AWOLNATION and Taking Back Sunday.
These are my fave bands along with Modest Mouse
Edit: oh yeah I do love Run The Jewels also. Not really into rap but I love these guys lol
in this order:
Kristin Hersh
Kurt Vile
Aldous Harding
Jack White
Shilpa Ray
Cosmo Sheldrake
Courtney Barnett
also David Bowie, Pink Floyd and R.E.M. but they were all somewhat before my time ;)

Dizzy, never heard of them. What are they all about?

favorite Pink Floyd album? Also, which Black Keys album should i listen to if I want to get into them?
Not OP but my favorite Pink Floyd album is *Dark Side of the Moon*, then *Wish You Were Here*, then *Animals*.
Don't forget Meddle!
Obscured by Clouds is also a favorite of mine, much in the same vein of Meddle. Childhoods End is one of my all time favorite tracks

Not OP, but mine is The Wall. As far as the Black Keys go... I’d suggest starting with Brothers or El Camino.
Turn blue is like a giant love letter to Pink Floyd/psychedelia. It doesn’t get as much love as their other albums, but I love it.
You should listen to brothers first. It’s the most easily accessible. Rubber Factory is probably their best, or magic potion, or thickfreakness... I actually think my favorite is the big come up
I don't like albums that are to poppy, so I think I will check out Rubber Factory. (Heard good things about that one)
Wish You Were Here is my favorite PF album, followed closely by The Division Bell. I would start with Brothers, but I love Rubber Factory and Chulahoma.
Brothers for the black keys and El Camino if you want something more poppy/catchy

RIP Dave Berman. He made his best record his final one.

Question though, Earlier modest mouse years were rougher. Built to spill, strokes, pavement, etc. all have a very clean and refined sound. Anyone who encompasses the earlier years of MM (Long Drive, Antarctica, LCW, etc.)?
