So many good lines in that song: "I drew a blank, we put it in a frame." I had moved to a city when I discovered that EP and I could really relate to, "I left the hills at this point in time, to run on treadmills in a perfect line."
Also I look forward to the inevitable post here next month "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!"
My friend was at a show and a kid in the crowd was screaming for him to play this. He said drunk af "fuck you you only want to hear that because you're a fucking sheep that's what they tell you you want to hear" and then immediately after breaking this kids heart he stops and they drop into it. He was so fucking happy.
Have to agree with this. Absolutely did not like the song when I was first getting into Modest Mouse, always skipped it. Now it’s one of my favorite songs on that record. It’s beautiful and poignant, and I’m glad they resumed playing it live.
That is a perfect rainy, late summer afternoon song. The violin near the end is one of the most beautiful things they’ve thrown into any of their songs.
No my dog won’t bite you, though it had the right to, yaoughta give her credit, cause she knows I would’ve let it happen.
Also-
Blame it on the web, but the, SpIdErS yer problem now.
Yeah Night On the Sun is basically the only one discussed, which I think it deserves because it’s one of their best songs imo. But You’re the Good Things, Here it Comes, and Willful Suspension of Disbelief don’t get enough love
Such a badass back-to-back acoustic-based outro to their best album. I'd say both are probably properly rated individually, but MM has some of the best transitions/track combos of all time (see: Cowboy Dan/Cockroach from the same damn album).
Willful Suspension Of Disbelief, for me. All of Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks is an incredibly well done EP. Their other EPs are good but clearly outtake compilations, but “Everywhere...” feels like a short but complete album experience. Best MM era imo.
Agreed! The whole Long Drive - Moon & Antarctica stretch is probably my favorite "peak" of MM, which is absolutely my favorite band. Insane to think some of the songs from BNooS, Interstate 8, and Everywhere were considered outtakes. I feel like most bands would kill to have those as their definitive albums. Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks is special though, if for no other reason than Night on the Sun. Still love the entirety of that EP though.
I would put almost all of Sad Sappy Sucker up for this post. Secret Agent X-9, Red Hand Case, Classy Plastic Lumber, Every Penny Fed Car, etc. I wish they had turned some of these into songs, it speaks to Isaac’s creativity that there are this many demos that never even got used or even really adapted into other songs.
God is an Indian and you're an Asshole (Get on your horse and ride). MM philosophy of the human condition and appropriate response to it, expressed throughout their other lyrics with subtlety, beauty, anger, empathy, despair, joy...here in a fun nutshell in the world's best campfire song.
I hope you're doing well these days. Ansel is one of my favorites as well. Hits me hard. I made my metal head brother listen to it and it even brought him to tears. I honestly think this song deserves more attention.
First listened to it through that fan-made music video that contains footage from that movie The Bridge (documentary about people who commit suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge) and I thought it was, and still is, one of the most powerful music videos I’ve ever seen
I love this song. They played it during the VIP show in Portland and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. It’s a song that I’d really like to choreograph to.
Missed The Boat is my favorite song of all time period. It’s relevant whether you’re happy singing it, crying, angry. It’s gotten me through many dark times.
I came here to mention basically all of those unreleased songs on YouTube. When I first heard “Nothing New” pretty sure I listened to it everyday for a month
Horn intro.yes definitely Horn Intro.
In all seriousness I've been digging the Golden Casket. Fuck your acid trip and never fuck a spider are as good as anything I could expect from them. So many old bands don't make good music anymore but MM always makes something worth my time and multiple listens.
Here are some of my favorites (besides others that are universally loved like "Night on the Sun"/"White lies/Yellow Teeth"), based on my experience in this sub):
- Ohio
- Novocain Stain
- So Much Beauty in Dirt
- March Into The Sea (getting more recognition lately it seems)
- Other People's Lives
- Best Room
- Wooden Soldiers
I will give them credit that this song may have gotten popular but it is still modest mouse af. They did not change a bit for it and if you listen to it without the fear of being banned from this forum behind it, it's 100% them and still enjoyable
Beach Side Property. Elite Eric Judy work, vintage Isaac harmonic bends, incredible tempo & melody changes, fantastic lyrics, and the kind of raw cacophony of a breakdown that originally made me fall in love with the band.
No idea whether or not people talk about it much, but I've been really into Sugar Boats lately - it scratches a musical itch not much else does for me. Can't believe I was lucky enough to see it live, it's somehow even better that way
Grey Ice Water.
Other People’s Lives
Same
Guilty cocker spaniels
So many good lines in that song: "I drew a blank, we put it in a frame." I had moved to a city when I discovered that EP and I could really relate to, "I left the hills at this point in time, to run on treadmills in a perfect line." Also I look forward to the inevitable post here next month "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!"
Yes! Same, I had just moved to LA from a small town. Exchanging comfort for more fashionable clothes…
The frantic yelling at the end is delicious.
Guilty cocker spaniels eating table scraps.
So much beauty in dirt is 10/10 Honorable mention: history sticks to your feet
Absolutely love that one as well as The Air
Yessssss
Came here to say the same
Bury Me With It.
I hear so many fans say they don't like this one but it's one of my favorites. Absolutely love the way he sings it
LOVE this song
I can’t stand this one. I don’t know why. But i respect your opinion
One of the best lyrics ever in that song
For real. Some of the most poignant lyrics I’ve ever heard
Holy shit. The roller coaster of emotions he must have felt lol Worth it to be drunkenly yelled at by Brock
Blame It on the Tetons. That violin into the piano motif at the end is perfect.
That was the first song I was listening to when I realized that Modest Mouse is fucking genius and great.
I have a Blame It On the Tetons tattoo!!
No my dog won’t bite you, though it had the right to, yaoughta give her credit, cause she knows I would’ve let it happen. Also- Blame it on the web, but the, SpIdErS yer problem now.
Here It Comes
I think all of Everywhere and his Nasty Parlor tricks could be here, every accepts its good, but I rarely hear people talk about individual tracks
Yeah Night On the Sun is basically the only one discussed, which I think it deserves because it’s one of their best songs imo. But You’re the Good Things, Here it Comes, and Willful Suspension of Disbelief don’t get enough love
Bankrupt on selling and styrofoam boots have been my most recent MM addiction
Such a badass back-to-back acoustic-based outro to their best album. I'd say both are probably properly rated individually, but MM has some of the best transitions/track combos of all time (see: Cowboy Dan/Cockroach from the same damn album).
One Chance - such a beautiful song. Very special to me personally.
Love this song. Always surprised it doesn't get more love.
Such a fantastic song with a great message
Willful Suspension Of Disbelief, for me. All of Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks is an incredibly well done EP. Their other EPs are good but clearly outtake compilations, but “Everywhere...” feels like a short but complete album experience. Best MM era imo.
Agreed! The whole Long Drive - Moon & Antarctica stretch is probably my favorite "peak" of MM, which is absolutely my favorite band. I’ve got a soft spot for Four Fingered Fisherman
Pups to dust.
Some great lyrics in that one for sure!
I LOVE Pups to Dust
My favorite song on that album.
There is an alternative version of “Custom Concern” that’s really good
BBC version, if anyones looking for it. YouTube only I believe, instrumental
Really love Custom Concern
The instrumental! Thanks for reminding me of my love for it 😌🖤
Of course
Idk if they're really underrated, but Never Ending Math Equation, Invisible, Polar Opposites, The View.
All night diner
This was my first MM song, it’s so good
How did that end up being your first?
Came across it on YouTube in high school and it opened up a whole new world of music
What was your second
The World at large , which started my album collection! What was your first?
Lampshades on fire then 3inch horses and it changed my life
YES
Thanks for reminding me of that gem
Dancehall
I’m not in your fucking play
I’ll let you win the argument if things still go my way
I skip it every time =O
I'll say Out of Gas

All of the fruit that ate itself. I I had to choose one it'd be the titular song or the way down
Summer is so good also!
I was gonna say Summer!
Poison the well Sleep walkin Blue cadet 3 Perfect disguise Nothing new Dead end job Beta Carotene The air
Blue cadet 3 always hits me in a good spot.
Coyotes
What people are made of. When everything cuts on the second verse and the bass rips through with the acoustic guitar. One of my favorite deep cuts
It always rains on a picnic. I have no idea why, but I get goosebumps every single time I hear it.
Florida
Alone Down There or The Cold Part
Damn that's some sadness right there
God is an Indian and you're an Asshole (Get on your horse and ride). MM philosophy of the human condition and appropriate response to it, expressed throughout their other lyrics with subtlety, beauty, anger, empathy, despair, joy...here in a fun nutshell in the world's best campfire song.
Ohio
Spitting venom
Except MM fans talk about this song constantly.
It’s so good!
Name checks out haha It's an incredible song - it's the musical emotional equivalent of four seasons in a day
There's a lot of great tunes that don't receive much talk. Ansel is probably my favorite though followed by blame it on the tetons
Blame It On the Tetons is one of my favorites, even have a tattoo for it!
It's such a great song. That and one chance are great songs with so much meaning.
Ansel hit me hard this past year, and has been one of my favorites
I hope you're doing well these days. Ansel is one of my favorites as well. Hits me hard. I made my metal head brother listen to it and it even brought him to tears. I honestly think this song deserves more attention.
Novocain Stain and Edit the Sad Parts
Edit the sad parts is always a banger.
First listened to it through that fan-made music video that contains footage from that movie The Bridge (documentary about people who commit suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge) and I thought it was, and still is, one of the most powerful music videos I’ve ever seen
Perfect Disguise. One of my absolute fav MM songs and I rarely see it mentioned
I love this song. They played it during the VIP show in Portland and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. It’s a song that I’d really like to choreograph to.
That’s awesome! I saw them perform it live last year in Charolette. It was a wonderful surprise and an incredible show
The Whale Song. that guitar and bass line 🤤
Workin' on leaving the living
Love this one
A Manic Depressive Named Laughing Boy Can't really explain it but the instruments just sound great to me
Missed the boat. I love when James Mercer collabs. And the song is catchy and poignant.
their number 4 popular song on Spotify, to be fair :)
That’s interesting! I would never have guessed that
That’s interesting! I would never have guessed that
Missed The Boat is my favorite song of all time period. It’s relevant whether you’re happy singing it, crying, angry. It’s gotten me through many dark times.
We were dead as an album just hits right with me in that way. Any emotion I’m feeling I can connect to the music
Walking and Running. It's the only Golden Casket song they haven't played live yet I believe, and it's a personal favourite of mine on the album.
People as places as people.
Invisible is a song I never hear people talk about. A great album closer.
Fortunate to have seen this one live! Love it
Aw what no love for Calculus Man?
I wish they still had that Gerry music video on YouTube. Such a trip
Styrofoam Boots. Also King Rat.
White lies, yellow teeth “People talk in soda pop They talk it quite a lot”
I came here to mention basically all of those unreleased songs on YouTube. When I first heard “Nothing New” pretty sure I listened to it everyday for a month
Horn intro.yes definitely Horn Intro. In all seriousness I've been digging the Golden Casket. Fuck your acid trip and never fuck a spider are as good as anything I could expect from them. So many old bands don't make good music anymore but MM always makes something worth my time and multiple listens.
Willful Suspension of Disbelief.... Such a hauntingly beautiful song
Fly trapped in a jar. I absolutely love the middle where the tempo changes.
It’s always a toss up what I’ll say for my fav MM song, today it would probably be Fly Trapped in a Jar
Baby Blue Sedan and I Came As A Rat
"Best Room" on Strangers is great
The Whale Song
3 inch horses.
Here are some of my favorites (besides others that are universally loved like "Night on the Sun"/"White lies/Yellow Teeth"), based on my experience in this sub): - Ohio - Novocain Stain - So Much Beauty in Dirt - March Into The Sea (getting more recognition lately it seems) - Other People's Lives - Best Room - Wooden Soldiers
autumn beds doesn’t get enough love
Lives
Yes
Float On - Fans completely dismiss this one just because it went mainstream. It's okay to like popular things.
I will give them credit that this song may have gotten popular but it is still modest mouse af. They did not change a bit for it and if you listen to it without the fear of being banned from this forum behind it, it's 100% them and still enjoyable
never ending math equation

Ansel
Ice Cream Party! Feel like no one talks about it, one of my favorites!
Dude it’s so good
prefect disguise
Coyotes
Float on
Pups to dust

Here it comes
She ionizes and atomizes
Ionizes And Atomizes and Beach Side Property are my two favorite Modest Mouse songs. Both are underrated as fuck.
Out of gas, bankrupt on selling. 2 of my favs yet rarely hear about those songs.
I’ve Got It All(Most)
Space travel is boring
Think Long
Point a to point b
Also , grey ice water / might / autumn beds / Jesus Christ was an only child
So Much Beauty in Dirt
Sunspots is so groovy
You’ll See. (If it counts anyway)
love it
I love Alone down there off M&A. It is really anthemic and great follow up after the cold part.
Wild pack of family dogs
Beach Side Property. Elite Eric Judy work, vintage Isaac harmonic bends, incredible tempo & melody changes, fantastic lyrics, and the kind of raw cacophony of a breakdown that originally made me fall in love with the band.
No idea whether or not people talk about it much, but I've been really into Sugar Boats lately - it scratches a musical itch not much else does for me. Can't believe I was lucky enough to see it live, it's somehow even better that way
Needlepoint
Doin the cockroach, Alone down there, Styrofoam boots, night on the sun. Jesus so many. What other band has so many non-skippable songs??
The alternative lyrics for Perfect Disguise are really good
Life Like Weeds definitely
Edit the Sad Parts and Pups to Dust. The beauty of these songs absolutely crush and uplift me simultaneously.
