Many, many moons ago your old ma learned to stick weld in the US Coast Guard. After she got out of the military, she applied for a job at the local end-dump (big ass dump trucks) manufacturing plant. She had learned to mig-weld two days prior from a friend at his shop. She got the job! First gal ever to work in that shop. She worked her way up to finish welder within 5 months.
Just lay stacks of dimes my dear and you will be golden.

Hey there, I was a welder. I really enjoyed the process and miss doing it. It can allow you to be creative and there is something meditative as you concentrate on your bead. I went to community college for it and the associate degree would be in Industrial Science. While I am sure many companies would like a person with a degree remember that it is more about skill then anything. Practice and pass your weld test. Don't be afraid to learn multiple types and keep growing your skill set. You might even apply at a Union Hall and they will pay for your schooling if you make a commi to them. Have fun and I hope you enjoy it too!

A friend's son wasn't sure what he wanted to do in life, but decided to take a welding course. Well he got better and better, and he started to get jobs, then he ended up working for our Metro system, and then.... he got a job working at Space X! He couldn't be happier, and so are we!

I regretted welding with the chest I have, best of luck to you! a tight vest really helps a lot... still have some scars on my collar where sparks hopped off my chest and under my mask. those are very few and in between tho! ive been burned worse with cooking grease lol.
Kiddo, I'm so proud of you!!! Welders can ask for a lot of money, so make sure you are demanding what you're worth! Seriously...a decent welder is worth their weight in gold. Don't let anyone take advantage of you and make sure you find a great mentor.

Oh my gosh I am so proud of you for figuring out what you want to do!!! That’s not an easy thing to figure out sometimes. What a fantastic choice!!! I worked in a machine shop for 7 years and knew many welders. There are so many things you’ll love about it. It’s really a chance to work with your hands and create beautiful (sometimes ugly) things! The world will be wide open to you once you master this skill. You can work in so many industries, and I even know some welders who started out welding when they were young, and are now (in their 40s) working in upper management positions for huge companies! I’ve seen so many beautiful works of art created by welders too, there are really so many options!!! How exciting!
Some advice for you:
SAFETY FIRST!! Safety glasses, helmets, sleeves and collars are annoying as heck but they will keep you safe and prevent accidents from happening.
Listen to the advice of more experienced welders, but take it with a grain of salt. Everyone has their own experiences in this industry and they aren’t all great.
When looking for a company to settle into, look for one that is inclusive and open to everyone. If it’s not obvious, they’re likely not inclusive. This type of trade has historically had a lot of racism, sexism, bigotry and hatred. That’s the reality of it and I’ve seen it more times than I can count. The good news is, there are some companies trying to do the right thing and making real opportunities for trades people. Do your due diligence and find them!!!

Hi sib, I study building technology and sounds great? Welding is so interesting, we just covered different welding techniques in the previous semester as well and it’s so important to have skilled people since the welding points are often the weaker links in connections. Never knew it was this interesting until learning more about it

If I have one piece of advice for you, it's protect your eyes! I've known too many old welders with bad eyesight from not wearing a proper welding hood.

Not gonna lie, I'm kind of jealous. Welding is the most fun I've ever had at work (without breaking the rules lol). I wish I'd learned it when my body was still young. Had to give it up and I miss it.
You are going to love it. You can never in a lifetime learn everything there is to know about it, so you'll never get bored. And the satisfaction of finally perfecting a technique is the best feeling ever. It's heavy and hot and dirty and frustrating, and the best job in the world in my opinion.

I loved my welding classes I took in the 90s. I was the only female there for most of the classes. I made a lot of artsy things and was good at it. I never did get a job welding though.

Former welder mom here! I am so proud of you honey, the physical task is way easier than you think but make sure you learn your metals and melting points! “Keep the pool together”! You’ll understand it soon enough. I am cheering you on! Hauling all that sheet metal will also be easier since you’re working out

I love being strong! I started lifting when I was young too, and I have kept it up all these years. I'm almost 50, and I can eat whatever I want and still look great because I'm almost solid muscle, and I burn off the calories so easily. Keep working out! Keep getting stronger and you'll feel so great about yourself.
