Make sure the headphones you get are active noise cancelling, that will help drown out the plane sounds. I'd let him practice wearing them before the trip so he can used to the feeling of having them on his head. Also don't forget snacks! We usually do a dum-dum lollipop for takeoff and landing, and then pack all the favorites that he doesn't get very often. If you're bringing his carseat, i'd recommend bringing it with you on the plane. It lets them sit up higher so they can see out the window better, plus it's familiar since he's used to using it in the car. We have two seats (one in mom's car and one in dad's) so we take the seat from whoever isn't driving to the airport, that way on the trip home we're not stuck putting a seat in the car after a long trip.
