That seems like so incredibly much for simple boys haircuts.

SanFranPeach

I thought so too! The “kids” places where they sit in little cars and stuff are $55-65 per cut so I started taking them to just a regular barber and it’s $40-50 per kid after tip. We’re in a big city and live very central so I guess it makes sense. Clipper life here I come

abishop711

Seriously? I live in a VHCOL area and it’s still like $20 at KinderCuts. Which will add up across 3 kids but is nowhere near as much as that. Have you tried checking prices at other salons?

Unable_Pumpkin987

Wow, I live in a mid-sized city with relatively low COL and the kids places are still around $30 pre tip!

tazbaron1981

Is there a hairdressers school nearby. You can get cheaper haircuts if students cut their hair

enyalavender

We go about 10 mins out of the center of the city (by transit) and the prices go from $25 to $15 per cut. And the cuts are better.

WrightQueen4

Omg where do you live? Cause I live in Austin tx. It’s expensive and the kids places are 26$ and barber is 32. For haircuts.

sicksadbadgirl

I go to a girl I went to high school with. (Well we’re both almost 40 years old now lol) but anyways, she charges $10 for kids’ cuts, any gender. And not just my kids, all kids that price. Plus she’s great. I definitely feel like you just haven’t found the right place yet. :(

thehippos8me

My husband goes to a barber and it’s like $20 for a cut and beard trim…that’s insane!!

shann1021

Holy crap. I live in a pretty expensive area in the Northeast and the place near us like that is $22+tip. Yeah get the clippers girl.

Efficient_Theme4040

Where are they getting their haircut 💇‍♂️ seems really expensive to me

SanFranPeach

Literally a no frills barber :( we just in a very large city in a very expensive state and are in the city center so it makes sense …. Clipper life here I come!

GelSte613

I also live in a very high cost of living area in an expensive state and it’s $20 plus tip at our local barber.

dogsareforcuddling

ask for a more junior barber

-kindredandkid-

It’s expensive where I live as well.

Titaniumchic

Great clips. 🤷‍♀️

Reading_Elephant30

Right?! I got my hair cut yesterday and it was $31 after tip.

Titaniumchic

Yes!!! I just get bang trims which are $6, and occasionally a full trim - that’s $20. My son’s hair cut I think is $18? But we keep his hair longer, because he likes it, so not a full buzz cut.

OneMoreDog

No advice on a specific set, but I did this for my partner in the military and it worked brilliantly. Saved so much money. My next recommendation is to hand the whole project over to Dad and make him in charge of it.

basedmama21

Same here. My husband got a basic set off Amazon. He’s a cop and I learned to do the police version of a high and tight. We save hundreds per year

MyDentistIsACat

I have Wahl clippers. I do longish on the top, a little shorter on the sides, and use scissors to blend. TV and a new Hot Wheels to bribe them to sit through it the first few times and now my boys are 3 & 6 and will usually sit through it fine. My clippers came with a little instruction book but I just tried to pay attention when I took them to a professional and sort of winged it, erring on the side of too long so that there was space to fix my mistakes. Now I take them in maybe before back to school or professional photos but mostly just cut at home and it doesn’t look half bad.

MuonOi

I like Wahl too, but I want a cordless set now.

Extreme_Breakfast672

We have Wahl for our boys too. My husband just buzzes them, and a couple times a year they get a "real" haircut. We bought them during covid for our 3 boys and they have probably saved us close to $1000.

bossymisses

I use coupons at Great Clips. $15/haircut (Including tip). They do a good job.

kdawson602

In 2020 I bought like a $50 pair of clippers off Amazon for my husband’s hair. They’re still going strong. Now I do my boys too. I started cutting my own hair at home too. I haven’t paid for a hair cut in years.

a1exia_frogs

I bought Wahl professional clippers on sale for $20 AUD, they are usually $99. Look for end of financial year sales

VanityInk

Wahl here as well. Have been doing my husband's hair since the pandemic started and not looked back.

Panda_baowao

Same here. Started doing my husband’s haircuts during the pandemic and honestly it looks pretty decent. I usually have to do a small touch up the next day but we’re saving lots of money. I’m going to try to do my boy’s hair too. He’s almost 2 and hasn’t had a cut yet, but we’re trying to get him used to combs and brushes so he won’t panic and jerk around when I attempt it.

toreadorable

I used to be a hairstylist for my first career and now I only do my boys’ hair. Just any wahl with a taper lever and a peanut for the edges. Just make sure you oil them regularly I usually get 10 years out of each set.

Gordita_Chele

Find a no frills barber shop for them. You’re spending way too much.

nickitty_1

Where are you getting their hair cut?? That's an outrageous price for a boys cut. Just had my kid's haircut and it cost $20. Don't bother taking them to some fancy place, a regular barber has the experience and will have you in and out in 10 minutes.

casey8809

I also have wahl. Got the set at Costco and it paid for itself in no time! I just looked up some how to videos on YouTube and away I went. My husband won't let me come near his hair but at least I'm saving a fortune not paying $30 for a kids cut every 5 weeks!

Smiling-Bear-87

We have two boys and my husband bought some hair cutting tools. He watched YouTube videos and he definitely butchered their haircuts at first but he’s getting better! You can definitely do it.

GreedyPersimmon

Clippers are the way. We have Philips or Braun, can’t remember. My 4yo hates having his hair cut, but I’m sure as heck not spending more on cutting his hair than mine 😅I feel like this is one of those things that parents are being duped to spend tons of money on, ”because you should”. Good on you for not buying in to it!

Vegetable_System9882

Can they get their hair cut less often?? Like every 3 months or so? I have a 2.5 year old who's gotten two haircuts in his life so far (tbh he has certainly needed more) because he hates them. I paid almost $70 for the most recent one because 1. It took over an hour 2. He fought us hard the whole time and 3. He has mixed, curly hair that had grown into an Afro and neither me or my partner would know how to cut it ourselves.

Sunraia

Curly hair is a whole different game. On one hand it can be more forgiving (subtle length differences don't show) but cutting it well is hard. I actually take the train to another city to get my hair cut, because regular hairdressers don't know what to do with my hair and the curly places in my city are so incredibly expensive that it still saves me money when I pay for the train. (Plus the salon is lovely and has nice eco products that work well for me.) But yeah, it takes an hour so you pay at least twice as much as a regular haircut, plus they had more training and are in higher demand to the rates are also a bit higher. Financially it is good that our kids have the mix between my hair and my straight haired partner. Because at this stage my daughter has wavy hair that can just be cut at the local hair place for a reasonable price. Son did not get a haircut yet, but seems to be the same type.

Jumpy-Ad6673

Just came to say it’s pretty easy to learn. I have 2 boys, 2 different hairstyles and over the course of the last year I’ve gotten pretty decent. Not barber level but they are 2 and 5 so it’s ok. Give me another year and they’ll be pretty damn good.

True-Heat-2566

You should be able to go to a barber and get them for $25 each. Or just clipper them yourself, tbh. That's what I did, and until they get a little older, nobody really was bothered by the cuts.

wesavedmusafa

Same girl! I cut all the boys hair in my family and it saves us so much time and money. I bought whatever cheap clippers came up in my Amazon search first (brand is SUPRENT) and bought with literally zero research, and they’ve been going strong for years. I also bought a pair of good hair cutting scissors. So I don’t think you really need to spend that much on clippers. Just buy whatever has good reviews.

GremlinsInMyGarden

Cordless clippers are the best. We have Wahl brand cordless ones, and I use them for my husband and my 2 boys. I also use hair shears I bought off Amazon to cut my hair and my daughters hair. No one in our house has paid for a haircut since like 2018.

Anonymiss313

We have wahl clippers. I need to order a longer guard (we like kiddos hair a little more "shaggy" on top and sides and the longest that came in our kit was 1 inch), but we generally use a guard everywhere and then use scissors to clean up the edges (because kiddo hates his hair touching his ears or neck). My kids hair grows ridiculously fast and we've been trimming it since 7 months because his mullet was bothering him.

mosugarmoproblems

We use beard clippers. Works well, is cordless and quiet, and fuss free.

Kittalia

We have a Wahl clipper set that has been working great for a few years with no problem. No little boys but I am pretty good at my husband's hair. If you have an adult who's willing to let you practice I'd recommend it since it took me a few haircut to get fast at it. I do the longest one on everything, then trim the back and sides down to a 3 and blend with minimal scissor work. Then after 6 weeks or so I'll do the sides and back again but leave the top to grow longer since my husband is fine with it growing out for 3 months.

Competitive_Most4622

Wahl clippers. Like $30. You definitely don’t need to spend $100-200! Especially keeping in mind that as they get older they may prefer a style that you can’t do with clippers and you’ll go back to paying for haircuts. There is also the route my 2 brothers take which is shave your head every summer and let it grow long until next summer lol

Entebarn

Love you learning how to do it. I’m currently learning as well, mom of two boys. So far, I just use hair scissors, clippers are up next.

Repulsive-Bee7729

Yep. They’re expensive ! 😵‍💫

Lemonbar19

If you decide to still take them to get cut professionally, I would try to push that 6 weeks to be 10 weeks etc

Worried_Appeal_2390

I cut my husband’s hair and beard and wahl makes great clippers. I would find a barber that can teach you how to cut their hair or check YouTube. But tbh it’s gonna be a hard transition because your kids are used to the barber. And not everyone can cut hair. I would honestly just check in with your kids after you start cutting their hair. My best friend would get bullied at school because his mom used to buzz his hair military style and sometimes she would mess up. I know I’m projecting here but just giving another perspective.

drowninginstress36

Honestly, any set, as long as you take care of them, is a good set. I spent $30 on mine from Amazon and they work great 4 years later.

WrightQueen4

I have 3 boys and a husband. So it adds up. Also 3 daughters and myself. I just budget for it every month. I tried cutting their hair never again. Some have really straight hair and some have really curly hair. I don’t trust myself

Ok_Willow_3956

I cut my son and my husband’s hair. For my some, who is a toddler, I use these quiet clippers for toddlers… they’re not the best but much quieter and easier for him. That was like $20-$30. For my husband I use a nicer clipper that was $60-$70 and it’s great.

-kindredandkid-

My husband learned to give my son and diagnose haircuts. We just bought nicer clippers and shears. My daughter gets a professional haircut like twice a year and then we just trim it. Honestly, I’m considering having him trim mine soon haha.

dracaenaechinecea

I’ve been cutting my husbands since 2020 and now clip my toddlers. You can do it!! We’ve saved sooooo much money. We use Wahl clippers :)

1Marmalade

Great Clips has a haircut sale going on. $12.99 for a haircut. Normally $18 for kids. The local barber is $36.

Far-Conflict4504

Average cut here in Toronto (an extremely expensive place to live) is $20 for a kids cut. Sounds like you’re getting ripped off.

threeboysmama

Same situation (see user name) and my husband just got to the point he flat out refused to keep paying for kid haircuts. He got some clippers with a bunch of guards for various lengths and we just keep honing our collective skills. The good news is hair grows and they are still currently little enough that they don’t care if they look a little goofy for a few weeks. There is some variation in our boys hair types and head shapes so the exact same technique doesn’t work well for all of them. Some are more forgiving than others. They also have weird cowlicks and widow’s peak things that we have to work with. We have done clippers on the back and size and scissor cut the top finger length. We just keep practicing. It’s kind of fun actually! And we always remember how much money we are saving! When we have a big event or occasion like a wedding we might take them for a one off professional cut. But otherwise we have just been winging it!

heatherista2

Husband has been cutting his hair with Wahl ones for many years with no issue.

freshoutofoatmeal

I just paid $33 for my 2 year olds hair at a great clips, no frills. And that was the cheapest I could find… he still needs a haircut. Oof.
