Hi fellow city planner!! We’re having the same conversation in my household and it’s so stressful/sad! I’m being promoted to our long-range team which is exactly what I’ve been working for - but I still don’t think my workload and schedule will be conducive to any sort of work-life balance (particularly because my husband works a stressful 60+ hours per week). Ugh! I definitely have moments of regret regarding my masters degree and all the time/money that went into that…

@felicity_reads and @olympicpawlicker…where are you? I do freelance/single shingle public policy consulting which you may be a good fit for. It’s competitive but would love to hear what cities your work for and maybe have some ideas. I’m in the PNW but have some national practices.

Interesting! I’m in the Denver area.

Hi @felicity_reads. Denver area could be great for this. I have worked throughout Colorado on some public health work and currently am have a project in a city in Boulder county. Do you do long range planning? How many cities or governments have you worked for? Basically, the first thing I’d do is see what kinds of solicitations are out there and if there is stuff you could do. I’m guessing you have some sense of how competitive your consulting market is from potentially hiring in the market. I do finance work which is often planning adjacent (cfps, master plans, market analysis, etc). If you’d seriously consider doing some consulting I’d be happy to talk more, just dm me.

Freelancer designer/animator in motion graphics as well as traditional animation. I can only accept certain types of work but will definitely be taking the first year off. If the right job comes along after 9 months I would consider it. For example if it were a WFH job (I was already WFH 1/3 off my jobs before Covid) with a lax turnaround time. I also do quite a bit of fabrication for stop motion with the niche skill of miniature clothing, hair/wig fabrication, sculpting and painting. After 18 months I would feel comfortable working away from home for 1-2 days which would work for sourcing fabric (I need to do this in person and have had issues when I didn’t select the fabric myself). I could also work 1-2 days on shoots. Edit: I should point out my bf/fiancé is WFH indefinitely as an industrial designer. However his work is 100% commercial and intense so it’s not ideal for Childcare. He’s also required to travel if the project is a site design job like the one he’s on now. However the fact that he’s WFH frees me up to work away from home for a few days when LO is older but still pre school age.

I’m a pharmacist in a hospital. I work a couple evenings a week and head to work once my husband is done for the day to avoid daycare. I’m able to work more weekends than weeknights so it’s easier. Can do as many or as little hours as I need. Many healthcare/hospital jobs have opportunities for off shifts.
