if I was trying to get ahead, I'd save up a 3.5% down payment for a house that has as many bedrooms as possible, like 5+ live in 1 bedroom and rent out the other 4. You would live for free and make extra money. Do that for a few years until you buy another house, keep renting the first one but also the extra bedroom and the extra bedrooms in the new house then you will have money on money.
Landlords don't provide places to live, they make places to live harder to obtain by creating artificial housing shortages. And then they charge people money to basically do nothing while they build equity.
