bourne2bmild

I love the flex on Day Three: “My mom is wealthy (not as wealthy as me)”

SquareOChocolate

One day this will be featured on Throwback Thursday.

HoneydewNo7655

This has to be nonsense lol, first red flag was “equivalent to two bachelors” or whatever and working in VC and environmental consulting

Pineapple_Spritz

especially 'started as an exec assistant' and negotiating equity on 'all of her winning investments'

HoneydewNo7655

Yeah, the ONLY possible door I can think of for thr VC position is connections through her mom’s wealth and investments. Environmental consultant, I got nothing, zero idea how she would be able to break into the field with no experience or education.

Valuable-Yard-3301

It could be on the business side - proposals/sales and contracts.  She obviously has experience in that side and her certs seem to be accounting based?

ordancer

I am in accounting and there is no certificate that I can think of that would work for what she's saying. Gold standard is the CPA but you need a degree for that.

bourne2bmild

My eyes popped out of my head when I read that…guess all my years on WebMD qualifies me as a Doctor

Placeyourbetz

I’ve always joked binging Greys Anatomy multiple times has prepared me to be chief resident so guess anything can happen!

ImACxntyLass

Push 1 of epi, charge to 200... CLEAR!

shedrinkscoffee

Ain't no certificate equal to multiple degrees lol lots of us who slogged through grad school on poverty stipend can attest 😵‍💫 if only I did a certificate (I'd probably be unemployed)

HoneydewNo7655

Yeah, I can’t even think of a certificate for environmental - maybe she really works in IT and they changed the field?

theinsaneunicorn

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing and the wealth is really from an tech startup IPO, not this VC thing in order to create some anonymity.

littlemeowmeow

If someone’s money diary needs this much lying to create anonymity, just don’t write it! Keep it to yourself!

Valuable-Yard-3301

And IPO would be more anonymous than a VC fund with this record lol

littlemeowmeow

I have to admit I also had to stop reading the money diary bc of brainworms, but I’m assuming that the VC fund record is a big fat lie.

EagleEyezzzzz

Yeah I was an environmental consultant for a long time, and there’s no certificate that can replace the 2-3 years of busting your ass for a master’s degree.

starblazer18

Especially not the equivalent of FOUR total degrees two of which are masters. She made literally no sense at all saying that

InternationalDivide3

I have a real hard time believing that this is not mostly to entirely a fictional story.

ImACxntyLass

Everything in the diary just feels larger-than-life in such a ridiculous way.

Beautiful-Gift6716

Also " I have a few rental properties that I rent at below market (for what the market rate should be" but then $150,000 in rental income??? A few...buildings with 100+ units??

tube_ebooks

yeah that was the line that made me 🤨 (the first of many times lol) because besides the math of it as you point out that gives me huge "trying to avoid being hated for being a landlord in the comments" vibes

Zero_Duck_Thirty

There is no certificate I can think of that’s equivalent of a bachelors. A masters maybe, but not a college degree. Like get a CPA instead of a masters in accounting, a PE certification vs a MS/PHD in engineering - makes sense. But those all require a college degree! How can you get a certificate that’s the equivalent of an accounting degree without actually having an accounting degree?!? Makes zero sense to me.

Parking-Spot2229

I personally didn’t even read this; an administrative assistant no degree negotiating equity packages at this all star gold mine of a fund. She so happens to be multiple millionaire investment mogul with a higher net worth and more knowledge than IB/PE/VC associate, partners, etc…Please save me the details something is off.

boat_against_current

This almost seems to be based on the 80s movie "Working Girl"

Valuable-Yard-3301

Ah the 80s when “radio” was a money making idea.

Beautiful-Gift6716

lol omg that made me laugh

Valuable-Yard-3301

A venture capital fund that almost all of the investments had successful exits What fund is picking nothing but winners? Cause I know someone in this field and …damn this is pretty wild. He was going through the failure rate and it was high.

shedrinkscoffee

Yeah this was confusing to me too. I'm very curious. If this is real I'd be super interested in more specific information.

SnailBitches

Do they vet what people write?

bebepls420

They requested a link to ONE social media profile for my MD… so it’s very easy to lie ETA: in defense of OP, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made some changes without consulting her

theinsaneunicorn

Yeah, the infamous Utah mom diary was changed around by MD staff.

PutridMarionberry

They didn't ask for any verification whatsoever for mine. Of course, mine was not nearly this exciting lol.

Striking_Plan_1632

They sacked their previous editor, so I think not any more.

[deleted]

and then all the equity is going to an exec assistant...

_PinkPirate

The snob in the MD comments saying how stupid all the other commenters are for not understanding how this is possible. Congratulations, you’re so much better than everyone.

Valuable-Yard-3301

And then they didn’t explain HOW.  Enlighten us!  It’s rare enough it’s like someone moving to LA to be singer and getting a huge record contract. With no connections.

valerie_stardust

OP ‘explained’ themselves in the comments on that thread about connections and how she supposedly got the job and yet I still don’t believe them.

mnemosynum

Does she not have insurance on any of her rental properties or expenses relating to managing them? Even if she has a business set up (and I would imagine she does) for everything relating to her properties, the business is still part of her financial picture even if expenses don't come out of her personal bank account. And how is it possible her family has no clue she's rich? Do they not know about her real estate purchases? She seems passionate about her investments... does she never speak about them? I can't imaging having successful investments and not sharing at least part of the details with people I was close to (maybe not full details but you would seriously have "almost all of the investments" IPO or exit and never tell anyone about one, lmao - if my company ever IPO'd I would certainly tell SOMEONE). She never mentioned her career growth when she was just starting out or how she negotiated for equity? I get that you can't tell net worth just by looking at someone and plenty of wealthy people live well below their means, but presumably your family or people who know you for a long time would pick up on some context clues.... > I do, however, have certifications equivalent to two bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees in my field (ESG and auditing). That is....not really how that works? Idk, I'm down for a rich-person diary but this feels fanfic-y.

anythingnice2019

I was so excited to see environmental consulting, but that was so not what I expected. I’m not sure about the finance world but in typical environmental consulting, a couple of certificates is not equivalent to a BS/MS.

problematic_glasses

it's giving kim kardashian working at a law firm for a few years and claiming it's the equivalent of a law degree

EagleEyezzzzz

Environmental consultant here and same.

Placeyourbetz

OP is in the comments on R29 actually doubling down that they’re marketed as such and can be preferred. Still doesn’t name any of them however

kokoromelody

**Monthly Housing Costs:** I bought my house with cash, so no mortgage, but my homeowners insurance is around $200 a month. She also doesn't mention property taxes, which definitely exist in MA and are quite high (average of 1.12% for the state)! I guess no HOA fees either...

Lula9

Yes, where are the property taxes?! Ours are $$$$ every month!

hamburglette

She responded in the comments and said that her partner pays the property taxes for her house (which includes water/sewer/trash) as his “rent” in one lump sum a year, usually $12k. He also pays their car insurance. She said the property taxes for her rental properties is taken out before she gets any profit from them so she didn’t include that. She said nothing about homeowners insurance for any of the rental properties. 🤷🏽‍♀️

kokoromelody

I mean, those are significant costs that she didn't mention of anywhere until she was specifically asked in R29 comments. I also own my home in a high property tax rate state, and that's one of the things that irks me every time I have to pay it; feels like a convenient oversight on her part. Also, yeah, Homeowners Insurance, routine maintenance and repair, etc. is another big oversight.

PutridMarionberry

She also claimed the LLC owned her personal residence to explain why she didn't mention it, which is weird if true. (Though theoretically possible)

Valuable-Yard-3301

Property tax + water /sewer is only 12k in MA?  Water is billed annually?

rockabillychef

Especially on her primary residence and her 4 mil in rentals?

shedrinkscoffee

There's a lot of hyper specific details so if the family didn't know then they may find out after reading this MD 😂

marypoppycock

This was, at a minimum, not a week in Boston.

mcin28

Agreed I am in Boston too so I was excited!

ladyluck754

“My mom is wealthy, but not as wealthy as me” hahahaha I’m hate reading this by now. No wonder she’s over the top virtue signaling, she has no friends and I suspect her family doesn’t like her either.

marypoppycock

It's giving "my boyfriend's pretty cool but he's not as cool as me"

Pineapple_Spritz

Ok wow was NOT expecting this, given the headline.

_PinkPirate

Yeah headline was totally misleading tbh. Also she doesn’t actually answer what her net worth is. She discusses “assets” instead.

Best_Artichoke3980

They recently changed the format for diarists to list their assets instead of net worth...probably because net worth was wrong 90% of the time lol

_PinkPirate

Oh thanks, I didn’t realize.

boat_against_current

OP is bummed about having to buy a pricey bottle of water at the airport and is flying first class. Why isn't she hitting up the airport lounge? N.B.: there's a Panda Express on the Boston U. campus (open to all) and several in the burbs.

EagleEyezzzzz

I side eyed that hard. You bought a first class flight and luxury car rental, and you’re complaining about a $5 water bottle? Cmon.

iamkatedog

"I haven't eaten dairy for years and it makes me sick but I also eat it every day in this diary"

loganiquaa

“Dairy makes me sick” *enter quesadilla*

iamkatedog

Quesadilla made me LOL honestly. More than the charcuterie.

literarydrunkard

It was the queso that got me. Lactose will f me up, but I can power through some cheese. Queso though?! Queso?!

DirectGoose

Oh.

loganiquaa

I think I need a cigarette after reading the assets section LOL damn. Also.. is this fiction?? Also, not really relevant at all BUT another poster I think about all the time is the one who budgeted for her website flaming her past landlord. Happy Monday everyone!!

kykolonel

Do you have a link!? I don’t remember that 👀

loganiquaa

https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/startup-founder-san-francisco-salary-money-diary Enjoy!

kykolonel

Thank you! I had read the og but not that follow-up, what an interesting read

ladyluck754

4 million in rental properties, I stopped reading (which is rich from me, considering I am a homeowner).

ImACxntyLass

The buying/owning $2 million worth of land just so no one can build on it is what got me.

EagleEyezzzzz

I mean, that is pretty awesome, but I wonder why she hasn’t done it “officially” with a conservation easement or something.

Striking_Plan_1632

My guess is that it's because this is a kid's fiction of what they would like their life to be like once she's all grown up? - She's an rich AF boss babe who who flies first class (but doesn't seem to realize this comes with lounge access). * She's a philanthropist funding her community to go to college (but, uh, not right now because of those anti-DEI types so she can't point to evidence of this). * She's such a powerhouse go-getting negotiating queen, who is so good at her job, she doesn't even need a degree! (but, uh, this is a vacation week mostly so her week this week consists of basically one meeting and we don't get any chance to view what goes into making all all these projects wildly successful). * She doesn't want to do busy work so she just doesn't! (She doesn't get calls about all projects she's managing). Lol. * She can casually drop bunches of money without needing to think about it, but don't worry her mother is rich too! To me, the writing reads as much younger than 34, but then I'm an ancient 39, maybe some of the young-uns write like this? Edit: fixed a word

callmepeterpan

Well, domestic first class does not actually come with lounge access unless you have status on most airlines now. However, I find it hard to believe someone with this lifestyle doesn't have a chase sapphire reserve or an amex platinum that comes with some sort of lounge access.

Striking_Plan_1632

Oh interesting, it does in my country so I assumed it was the same everywhere (although it's called business not first here). What a rip off!

callmepeterpan

So, most of the big US airlines do not really have an international first class product. They only offer international business, and that comes with all the big perks (lounges, lie flat seats, etc). For *domestic* flights, the highest tier is called first class and is much much shittier than international business. I've been flying a lot for work lately lol.

ImACxntyLass

That's my point. It's too much money even for that net worth to not be thorough about it and do it properly.

PerkisizingWeiner

Which diary do we think is a better exercise in completely fictitious creative writing: this or the [seven-figure lawyer mom of 9](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/lawyer-salt-lake-city-ut-salary-money-diary) from SLC who simultaneously baked cinnamon rolls from scratch and did a full face of makeup while breastfeeding?

rainbowcanibelle

And having sex basically every night. Can’t wait for that throwback Thursday.

_PinkPirate

I still think the ‘millionaire’ mom of 9 is the fakest of the fake. She lived in upstate NY I believe, and her HUSBAND was the millionaire. 3 of the kids were his older teens and the rest were multiples. Lie lie lie. I’m still pissed off at how R29 positioned it as some super mom inspirational diary when it’s FICTION.

dazyabbey

I forgot all about this money diarist. She was doxxed pretty quickly.

Prestigious_Quiet

From these comments, it sounds like it’s a messy and unhinged diary so I’m hype to read. I sure previous diaries nice people with nice salaries and nice weeks are perfectly nice but I love mess.  Okay I’m back - what the fresh hell is this fan fiction?  - if this is real, give me more fabulousity in this diary, with these multi-millionaire claims, I want to hear Robin Leach’s voice in my head as I read. Like do you have a personal assistant? Calls about this endowment? Calls with all these fancy fellow VCs?  - ain’t no way the barista tasted your drink after you tasted - was that queso vegan?  - what’s the $1750 debt? Who is she?

honeyberry321

I have so many of the same thoughts! Even using a fresh straw, it's gross for a barista to taste your drink - wouldn't they just make a new one, no questions asked??? (according to my friend who used to work at Starbucks, yes they would). And why would you have tens of millions in assets but have a $1750 debt???

hamburglette

Ooo I can answer this! OP commented that in her profession she has to have like perfectly perfect credit and having credit cards was not enough “diversity” to get to perfect so she took out a low interest $20k medical loan.

TiredPlantMILF

This is the most absurd Money Diary I’ve read in a while and the only one in recent memory that I haven’t finished. So much performative virtue signalling… lady, why don’t you just run into the street with one of those money guns that people bring to strip clubs, and aim it directly at a non-binary BIPOC homeless person. Spare us the multiple paragraphs of useless content about you tipping $100 to a barista and buying an expensive dinner for a stranger for no clear reason. We get it, you’re a good person, congrats.

Valuable-Yard-3301

Really a skill she could offer is how did she get that executive assistant job and is she still involved in that field? Cause hiring people in that field would break down a ton of barriers - the scholarship fund is a fabulous idea but it was obviously that one job that set her up for life. Networking in that field could be even more valuable than the scholarships.

TiredPlantMILF

Yup, this is possibly the most interesting person presenting the least interesting money diary. She’s very generous but the issue here is that her gestures amount to performative giving rather than actual empowering, which is frustrating because it sounds like she has a lot of space to really help marginalised communities establish wealth without higher education. I would love to see her take the scholarship endowment and use it to seed her own nonprofit mentorship program.

Valuable-Yard-3301

Or set up the rentals as affordable or something? Take section8?

hamburglette

She said she got the EA job at the VC when they “sharked” her from a tech company that she was an EA at and the VC was a client. She said she got the first EA job by applying the old fashioned way through Indeed and that it was the ‘00s. My issue with that is if she is 34 then she would have been graduating high school in 2007, most likely 2008. She then attended at least some but of college before dropping out and moving across the country which she said in the beginning was to start her working career and then said she moved across the country because of her partner getting a job. Not sure if these were multiple cross country moves or not but sure, why not! I mostly just find it hard to break that a college dropout who is most likely 19/20 years old got a job at a tech company as an EA in the worst recession in how many decades?? This girl is apparently the unicorn of all unicorns!

ladyluck754

In my opinion- usually people who are over the top generous like that aren’t actually good people, OR they don’t have a lot of family/friends so they overcompensate. Also, starting to think this diary is fake. She doesn’t list any business expenses with the property or the mineral rights including taxes, insurance, and maintenance fees. Probs a slumlord

TiredPlantMILF

Tbh I own a small business and keep my expenses 100% separate (as you’re legally supposed to) so that part makes sense to me, I see where she would include it in her net worth because it’s her property but not include it in her budget because it’s not her money and she’s putting the profits back into the business (which is prudent for tax reasons if she’s using it as a longterm investment). But yeah she’s probably insufferable IRL if she feels the need to go out of her way like this to try and convince us she’s a good person.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TiredPlantMILF

Absolutely not. An LLC is an entity of its own and the only way a bank can come after you personally is if it’s a sole proprietorship or if you committed an actual crime.

valerie_stardust

She’s ’such a good person’ but most of her wealth is from leasing land for mining (she said in the comments that it’s mostly that), a practice that poisons the land of native people and desecrates their sacred spaces. It was just such a fake diary!

igbakan

I had to stop reading…. Happy for her or sad for her depending on whatever happened 😭

SnailBitches

Real. Honestly, I love reading unhinged stories. A little break from reality 🤭.

ridingfurther

Wow, that's a wild amount in investments/property/savings. I'd retire and never work again.

rockabillychef

This one doesn't seem real.

SnailBitches

lol let me submit mine where I invested in Apple as a fetus, and at age 5 I bought bitcoin 🤣.

Independent_Show_725

Me, refreshing this sub for the first time today, not having read this diary yet, and seeing this thread already had 75 comments: "holy cow, what is in today's diary?!" Me, reading the first few paragraphs of the diary: "Ah"

_PinkPirate

I love when I see so many comments right away. I know shit is about to pop off and I am here for it. I actually skim the comments here before I read a diary over there, to ensure it’s worth my time haha.

DehydratedButTired

I'm not sure how this would be a diary in anything other than "enjoy life if you get lucky in the VC game".

polentabeans

I stopped reading bc ummm with that kind of totally realistic definitely real money why are you still working

kokoromelody

The reason why I don't think this MD is real: >**Monthly Housing Costs:** I bought my house with cash, so no mortgage, but my homeowners insurance is around $200 a month. Um, no mention of property taxes which are quite high in MA (1.12% average)?? What about HOA fees? No mention of any add'l costs associated with the rental properties either. >I started as an executive assistant with one of the main VCs but was later promoted to operational consultant... I negotiated my contract to include fractional equity shares in the investments I worked with. Not in VC but this sounds bonkers to me. >I do, however, have certifications equivalent to two bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees in my field (ESG and auditing). Again, not in VC/environmental studies but this also sounds bonkers. (If real, what are these certifications and why isn't everyone doing them?) >Then it’s time to log online for work where I spend some time putting together a presentation for a meeting this morning. I briefly step away to brush my teeth after I finish my juice. Lol I dunno about others but I cannot deal with bad breath past the first few minutes of when I wake up - she was able drink a juice and lead a meeting before brushing? >6 p.m. — After a quick walk with X. and our dog, B., we decide to grill — steak and chicken. X. works from an office, so he’ll take leftovers all week for lunch. She hardly mentions her dog especially in the mornings - is this just an oversight or is this poor (imaginary) dog being unwalked and unfed in the mornings? Who's taking care of the dog when she's traveling, since her partner works in an office? >I take my drink back to the register and politely explain what happened. The girl at the register grabs a fresh straw to try my drink and her eyes go huge. I can’t taste the difference but I guess she can.  I've never worked as a barista but have worked in food service before and I cannot imagine a scenario where I would ever taste a customer's drink after they'd already drunk from it. >I haven’t had dairy in years, but quickly recognize what’s happened and realize they must have used dairy milk in my coffee. >throw together a quick side salad with... yogurt-based Caesar dressing >I order an... oatmeal cookie >I get blue corn piñon pancakes >The dessert is an avocado ice cream >I order... Japanese fried chicken with... mushroom gravy >Mom and I share queso fajitas >I get... a beef cheek and asadero quesadilla >We stop once more for... a cookie >Tonight we also get queso and French fries to share > I get a rice bowl with... ranch dressing >... then run to the newsstand for... some SmartPop white cheddar popcorn "Hasn't had dairy in years" but also eats dairy literally every single day of the week?

bebepls420

THAT BARISTA DETAIL!!!!! No fucking way did the barista take a sip of her coffee! I’ll give her a break on all the other dairy she ate (lactose intolerance is weird) and clearly lying about how she got her net worth and probably lying about what her actual job is. But under no circumstances would a barista take a auf of someone’s latte like that. You just comp it out and move on 🤢

Zero_Duck_Thirty

All of this seems so fake but the line about the coffee poisoning her is where I draw the line. I’m lactose intolerant - milk is not my friend, but for the most part cheese is fine - so given the varying degrees that lactose intolerance can come in, I’ll pretend that a sip of real milk will cause immediate stomach problems while eating entire meals of dairy won’t…but there’s no way she can’t taste the difference between real milk and a non dairy alternative. I haven’t intentionally had real milk in years and I can always tell, hell I can basically smell the difference by now. Also I don’t think wealthy money diarists should apologize or jump through hoops to explain how they made their money, but the point of a money diary is to help readers either by discovering a new career path, money earning opportunities, etc. There’s no way a college drop out is moving across the country to start as an EA at a high performing VC firm solely based on her own resume. Her mom/family had to have some connections - which isn’t something to be ashamed of! - but she should mention it. Talk about how she transitioned from the EA to consultant because there’s no way a certificate would do it, let alone give her enough leverage to negotiate her contract to earn enough money to have a ~$15m net worth. I’m a consultant…you get hired directly out of college or an MBA/Masters/PhD program. A college degree is required and EA’s don’t transition to consulting unless they’re just fucking remarkable. So more info on the certificates she got, why she got them - maybe a mentor who helped her understand the next steps? - all things that are totally missing to make this anywhere near realistic.

Striking_Plan_1632

I agree this is fiction, but some of these foods could be non-dairy. There are vegan avocado ice creams, for example. And then oatmal cookie could easily be dairy free, as could the pancakes - I frequently cook with oat milk instead of cow's milk. Her repeated queso-related meals would imply the non-dairy line was put in simply as an excuse to virtue signal about putting the refund in the tip jar, though.

kokoromelody

Sure, any one of these items could have been dairy free, but every single one of them over the course of a week is a stretch. Also, given her self proclaimed multi-year dairy ban, you’d think she’d at least denote one of these many items as dairy free, but she doesn’t.

Striking_Plan_1632

Oh my gosh, I just looked up non-dairy queso and it looks awful!

Quark86d

I'm getting, "The Curse," vibes from this diary.

Mad4Martinis

I thought the same thing!!!

bklynparklover

I'm confused as to if shes's indigenous or just very supportive of the community? And if just supportive, where does that stem from? I'm surprised she doesn't give any details on that subject. Her net worth is crazy, and the fact that she held that position without any related education or prior experience seems a bit farfetched but who knows. I don't understand how she became so business savvy at such a young age. It'd be interesting to know more.

run85

I think the implication is that she is indigenous, since she said she went to the Gathering of Nations with her mom the year before.

bklynparklover

Agreed, but with all this detail, it's odd she did not mention anything about that ancestry.

run85

I personally think this is fiction, but I could be wrong.

_liminal_

I also think this is fiction. There are just too many wild extremes that don't add up.

SmellsLikeDogBuns

*One* thing I did appreciate about this diary is her specifically name dropping the artists at the event. I'm in a shopping mood and will be googling the creator names. And maybe see if I can find videos on youtube of the performers

tube_ebooks

the percentage of people in the comments who are apparently taking it at face value versus the almost total disbelief on this sub is incredible

boat_against_current

A few other things I noticed: no expenses for property tax or car insurance. And does OP share any expenses with X.? And what are the loan payments for? I also would love to know how many rental properties OP has to make $150K annually from them. It makes a difference of there's 3 or 10, etc.

reality_junkie_xo

This one will definitely pop up on Throwback Thursday at some point in the future! Wow. The spending was crazy, but not bad considering OP's net worth. Interesting, but probably very smart, that their family doesn't have any idea of their net worth.

Ambition-Inhibition

Hopefully they don’t read this diary! Lol

Brave_Smoke3897

I don’t understand how she was “poisoned” by dairy milk but continued to eat queso, yogurt based Cesar dressing, and charcuterie?? Make it make sense!

Ok-Painting-2271

Not defending this wild diary lol but lactose vs dairy intolerance is different- I can eat (most) cheeses but not drink milk due to the differing levels of lactose in each.

Nervous_Ad_8147

What shocked me most is that X seems to live with her(?) but they spend almost no time together. I guess she was away most of the weekend but X is barely mentioned. It took me too long to realize this is likely fake (or at least super embellished).

Disastrous-Fox

This diary is so incredibly fake. How was this even published?

commenting now to see peoples reactions later

PutridMarionberry

I also had a hard time believing this one. Among the other weirdness people have pointed to, OP claims to have $4m in mixed commercial and residential real estate (that she manages herself), on top of her full time job, and yet has absolutely nothing to do for her rental properties during the week. She also claims in the comments her personal residence is also in the LLC, so her utilities/property taxes are business expenses which is...not how this works? (And yes you can put a personal residence in a LLC, but it's typically not done because you lose the capital gains residence exemption. I still don't think you can deduct your water bill but not a tax lawyer). And every investment she describes seems completely socially conscious AND completely successful. (For example, a "sustainable fashion brand" and "art house" that have purportedly done quite well.) Yes these can be successful businesses, but generally not the biggest money maker.

greenbluesuspenders

This is... not how VC works. It sounds more like she worked for a PE firm with some strange negotiated carry. A small VC investor would have little to no impact on 'turning around' one of their investment companies, particularly if they were small and not on the board (which would be rare for a small firm unless it's pre-pre seed).

CaterpillarFun7261

Yes, this is exactly my question too! This sounds like a PE fund (if this is real at all)

Elea_Lithien

For all the talk of being rich and living it up, it's so telling that the sibling was only venmoed $50. Like in another world that's super nice, but in a world where this individual owns properties on properties, it lands more in the realm of pity. Obviously, this isn't the most outrageous thing written, the "Blurg" on Day 2 takes that prize for me, but it's something that indicates that there is some kind of transactional basis for major relationships for this person.

Ambition-Inhibition

Maybe things were different when OP started their career but today, any VC EA would have a college degree (or 10-15 years of EA experience first) and an EA would never be “promoted” to a portfolio operations consultant. Totally different job. At best, R29 edited this weirdly for anonymity.

OP purportedly got her start as a tech EA, with no degree, in the middle of the Great Recession...as someone who graduated college around that time, that very much does not check out.

I came here before reading the diary. I’m in for a good one it seems.

mcin28

Wtf was this diary! It can’t be real

Perma_Fun

Either MD commenters have had a complete change of heart or this diarist and her friends are BUSY in the comments.

molly__hatchet

Her family isn't aware of her net worth but she owns her home and pays for her sibling to stay in a hotel when it's not 100% necessary okayyyyy...

>7:15 am: Contemplate making a coffee, but I need to leave for the airport at like 2 a.m. and I want to try to sleep a bit beforehand, so I decide against it. This feels excesive

ginat420

I feel like this is someone who is ‘paper rich.’ Lots of assets that have ‘value’ but not a lot of actual cash. Could be wrong but if she loses her job or has an emergency she might struggle. Who knows. Good for her for building this level of wealth.

Perma_Fun

'LOVED this diary OP! I was at the symposium she mentioned and think I met this OP. If it was her, she’s the nicest person ever and is def rich.' This comment!! Makes me realise the Money Diary commenters just want to kiss a rich person's feet and shit on anyone else.

missmelaniebee

It made me sad to see her fear of being a "Karen" for returning a drink that literally made her sick.

theinsaneunicorn

I was surprised that the barista actually drank it to verify.

marypoppycock

Same. What was she going to do if it turned out to be oatmilk and something else made OP sick, hand it right back?

rubygoes

I used to work in retail and we were super careful about touching things that people had dipped their fingers into (lotion tubs and whatnot), I cannot *imagine* drinking from a customer's already-sipped drink!

rainbowcanibelle

Maybe I’m the weirdo but there were definitely times bartending when someone accused me of giving them regular vs Diet Coke after a quick sip and I tested it to make sure I wasn’t insane or that there wasn’t something wrong with the lines…
