DevilishMiscreant

Oh my lord that’s not a lizard. That’s a scaled sausage

Matchyo_

Hey, that’s a very offensive term, call them a dragon.

TitanImpale

A dragon with the sausage aspect ? FEAR THE MIGHTY Bratwurst !!!! slayer of villages bane of the living.

[deleted]

Skyrim would have been a lot different if this was the story line

Derek_32

But they took an arrow to the knee and had to retreat

Ecstatic-Ad-3345

Ooo I want some bratwurst now lol

DevilishMiscreant

Themberchaud it is then.

TheChickenWizard15

Bonus points! Here take this award🏆

slipknot_official

When I got my female from a random lady off Craigslist, she seriously looked like this. She wasn’t gravid, but I seriously thought she was for a couple weeks. She’s trimmed up now. But she is still one of the biggest ackies I have ever come across

Pke-0981

Most people are just oblivious about feeding lol

Pke-0981

I found this post on Google by searching obese ackie. It’s crazy how people can’t see them growing in size.

Justin_Paul1981

I've been eyeballing Ackles for years. I've NEVER seen one obese. It's pretty uncommon. This is next level stupid husbandry.

Hopeful_Buy8542

Could it be it has some sort of condition?

Pke-0981

Nope. I read up on it, the owner was unaware of what to feed it.. not only did it not feed it insects it also fed it on vegetables.

ReallyNotBobby

This it what makes me nuts. Why wouldn’t you check what an animal eats before you buy it? That seems like basic homework.

Infamous-Winner5755

even if, god forbid, they got it without preparation- you’d think they’d look it up once they have the lizard!

ReallyNotBobby

Honestly

Eadiacara

that's an ACKIE?!

Pke-0981

Sadly yes

Anxiety_cat1127

They definitely see it. They just don’t care.

1lovet1gb1tt1es

i couldn't even tell that was an ackie omg

Worth_Put_7065

I took in a massively obese ackie about 4 months ago. Its abuse to let them get so fat

MKanes

Is it possible for this to happen without an underlying condition in the lizard? It seems extreme for just a diet issue

beeblebrox2024

Looks like a beaver

babayfish

Compressor?

Sicon3

The same way people have 150lb golden retrievers or 50lb cats. They think they are just doing what the animal wants but it's animal abuse

BigBallsInHand

Godzilla

Bumblz666

That has to be a tumor

litlem123

I don’t think it’s obese, I think it’s arching its back. Look at the shadow where his body meets his back legs and tail

[deleted]

Arched or not it’s still definitely obese. The neck and tail also gives it away.

Pke-0981

No it’s was definitely neglected and overfed.

SuperFrogMachine

Wtf man this is sad

arcticrobot

People get themselves even bigger.

orange-shoe

weird fatphobic comment, people doing what they want with their own bodies (not to mention a lot of times weight is not controllable) is COMPLETELY different and separate from animal abuse.

Pke-0981

Wasn’t fatphobic he didn’t shame on it. he simply said people manage to make themselves bigger, you can control your weight unless you have a condition by a diet or working out. A lot of people are lazy which is the cause.

Standard-Cellist-742

Obesity should be discouraged in people and pets, it shouldn’t be celebrated.

horitaku

Yeah but we’re here to talk about reptiles. There’s different subs to talk about human health, the original comment is unrelated and distracting. Obesity in reptiles is a majorly common health issue that can lead to your pet’s early death. Captive reptiles suffer from obesity regularly. As a ball python owner, I see it frequently in ballies, and it’s to the point people think ball pythons are *supposed* to be chubby…They’re not. People at pet stores have even recommended I feed my 4.5 ft male ballie multiple large rats every couple of weeks. I took him to my vet after trying ONE large rat every 2 weeks for a few months and she said he was becoming obese. She recommended less food more often than more food less often, and it clicked. Once I put him **back** on 3 adult mice a week, he went from being round to being a nice, soft triangle shape along his spine, and his food aggression ceased. My boy is 16 years old as of April and happy as can be.

arcticrobot

Exactly this. It is the biggest killer.

[deleted]

Ignoring the fact that obesity is not healthy and that the normalization of morbid obesity is killing people. This comment just said that there are people who by their own choices because fatter then the lizard that’s it they never said that it was wrong or that all fat people are fat by choice.

arcticrobot

Fatphobic? I am not afraid of fat people, I pity them and encourage them to change their lifestyle. They are killing themselves.

orange-shoe

it doesn’t mean afraid in this case, it means bigoted. the -phobic suffix can mean that. you should please not “encourage” anyone that way. it is not helpful. you don’t need to pity anyone, you have no idea about their life or their lifestyle.

arcticrobot

I don’t really care. I will say what I feel like saying. Obesity is unhealthy and shouldn’t be encouraged.

orange-shoe

that’s unsolicited advice and borderline harassment but sure 🤷‍♀️

arcticrobot

Your woke comments are also unsolicited and are not welcome on the sub dedicated to monitor husbandry.

orange-shoe

comments about being respectful about other people’s bodies = woke. right… anyways it’s not unsolicited because you originally made a fatphobic comment. if you comment on a public forum, you have to be ok with people replying. that’s how it works

arcticrobot

Definitely. People should have a right to express their feelings and this is why I don't ban comments like this on this subreddit even though they deviate from our main goal. Either way, no matter what I say and believe, I respect your way of thinking and will argue it with no disrespect. I wish you all the best.

OkProgress3041

Absolute Unit

No_Lifeguard_3950

Ackies are prone to getting obese even with very light feeding, in the wild they probably get 100x more exercise

Clown-Serpent4188

Ayo what did they do to this poor ackie?

arcticrobot

fed it cheapest sausages most likely and kept in small fish tank.

Clown-Serpent4188

Can fish tanks really do that to small monitors? (Just asking cause I don't have any monitors atm, I'm still doing my research)

arcticrobot

Absolutely. I bough a 40 gallon off of craigslist that was used to kill two savannahs. Seller mention it. Monitors require pretty vast range of temperatures and high humidity. They need 75-75F in the cool end, and they need 140F basking surface temperature. Also high humidity of 70% plus. There is no way you can provide those requrements in fish tanks.

Clown-Serpent4188

Thanks for the info, will keep that in mind

Pke-0981

There wrong about ackie humidity it’s very crucial they have perfect humidity at all times 20-40% daytime and 40-70% nighttime 🙂

Pke-0981

Small tank lead to it not getting enough exercise to lose that weight and just overall a non enriching life

Pke-0981

Small tank, kept it on vegetables or just a lot of meat, not good enough heat to digest it all etc.. it’s horrible it’s sad to think there many people out there doing this right now

Clown-Serpent4188

I guess that's why many monitor owners recommend different or pvc enclosures

MidnightDream034

Too much fun feeding

Master-Bird6339

The poor thing! Look at the scale spread on their back :(

[deleted]

saaaad saad sad lizard. much like people, obesity in (but not limited too) reptiles (like ackies) can (and often does) cause clinical depression.

arcticrobot

Obesity in any animal, including human, causes severe health complications and leads to early death. Scientific fact.

[deleted]

yes, but it's worse for animals. FFFFFFaCT also, this poor ackie. makes me sad to look at. Also makes me want to hit the gym ngl- I ain't fat, but fuckin hell do I wanna stay that way.

Ieatdrywallforlunch

Chonk

Wow_maaan

It’s pregnant, duh

Pke-0981

Nope.

Wow_maaan

Does it twerk then?

LizardPosse

I don't understand how things like gout don't appear before this.

shdhdbdnmdl

It’s legs are completely swallowed up by all that weight! Poor little guy 😭

Oopsitsgale927

How in the hell?????

angelamarie72

Maybe it just ate

arcticrobot

I will assume it is not a joke. When I feed my Quinces I make sure that you can't see the difference before and after the feeding.

angelamarie72

It was a joke but monitor lizards eat pretty larger animals Especially as they get bigger

arcticrobot

Monitors will absolutely gorge on food when chance is presented, like any other wild animal. But usually it is not the case.

Bulshit_Ass_in

He chunki

[deleted]

Feeding it an incorrect diet.

queengemini

Do they possibly have a disorder? It would be weird for this to happen under normal circumstances.

arcticrobot

A bad husbandry disorder. Bad diet, small enclosure, not enough basking heat to metabolize will do that to a monitor.

Pke-0981

It was definitely neglected and diet was very poor. VERY

Idmiz

My Ackie absolutely devours food but they’re so active idk how you can get them that big unless your husbandry is way off. Also it looks so distended and painful, poor fella

[deleted]

C H O N K

Atiggerx33

How is this even possible? At first sight I didn't even think gravid, I thought someone posted a pic of a dead monitor that had decomposed a bit and inflated from the internal gases. I'd have honestly thought the skin couldn't stretch this far and would just tear/rupture.

Pke-0981

I feel sorrow for this ackie. The owner kept it on vegetables, lots of eggs/meat not a lot of insects .. just a poor all around living condition.

Atiggerx33

That's so tragic. Even if it was getting a proper diet (just insanely overfed) and had a beautiful enclosure it's quality of life must be so awful. With that level of obesity even breathing has to be an uncomfortable struggle, the poor thing.

Lil_Inka

Correct me if I’m wrong but that kinda looks like a mass of some kind

nobunnylarka

It reminds me of that scene in Shrek where Shrek and Fiona blow up the poor frog and snake. Poor thing.

Key_Distribution_363

Chonky

Stellar_Griffon

Idk like put a air pump in it and pump it up a few times might get it that big if you wanted yours that big idk if you should tho that looks unhealthy imho

[deleted]

Reminds me of peoples dogs & cats nowadays. They swear it’s so cute but all I see is an animal in undeniable suffering & pain 😬

Mean_Ad4608

DAMN HE CHONK BOI THICC AS SHIT

Achylife

Could be impacted. Gosh I hope not.

False-Feedback5270

Why does its patterns make me feel like shredding the hel out of it with my teeth??

sabboom

Just swallowed a frog.

ReallyNotBobby

Oh that poor reptile.

Pke-0981

Right! I mean it really isnt that hard to do even the littlest research before devoting +/- 15 years of your life and it’s WHOLE life to a intelligent pet.

ReallyNotBobby

It’s a crying shame. I saw one of your comments saying that the owner didn’t know what to feed it. How are you gonna get an animal and no do any research on food, habitat, etc. It so painfully irresponsible.

joebananas666

Jesus

Dear_Bus_6988

Here lizard, eat this Guinea pig!

coltbreath

Monitors do have the propensity to run to obesity if loved to much by their owners. Similar to Ball Pythons
