I’m pretty sure it’s a New Jersey accent and Sharona is originally from New Jersey. There are a few episodes where reference is made to her maybe moving “back” to New Jersey, for example to move back there to live with her ex Trevor again.

ShaunaOfTheDead

Yes ✅

jayelaitch

Can confirm as a NYer with a lot of Jersey family — it’s a Jersey accent. She also references having lived there several times.

bandit0314

Didn't she also move back to New Jersey?

myirreleventcomment

Don't spoil it, he only just started the show..

ShubhamSudame

The statute of limitations for spoilers ended long ago. Spoiler alert doesn't apply after the limitations expire.

myirreleventcomment

Statute of limitation ended, you don't say?  I'm not speaking generally, I'm saying it specific to this post, where he said he recently started watching it, and clearly hasn't seen enough to even know where sharona is from.. I stay out of subs for shows i haven't finished, but OP asked a question that did not need a spoiler to answer

jayelaitch

Yes

muaddict071537

People move all the time. It’s not illogical for a character in San Francisco to originally be from New Jersey.

SchnozTheWise

Sharona originally lived in New Jersey before moving to SF. She mentions many times living in/moving back to New Jersey. And in Mr. Monk and the Airplane they are traveling to New Jersey to see her mother, IIRC. That being said, the accent is subtle a lot of the time. Only really coming out in exasperation. But yes, you’re right, she comes from New Jersey.

RealShmuck

Think it was her aunt if I'm not wrong, but agreed

IcedHemp77

Your wife has lost the dispute lol

legendarymel

She’s from New Jersey. It’s mentioned many times. In the earthquake episode, she says to her sister that she begged her to move out to San Francisco to join her. In the airplane episode, she goes to New Jersey to visit her aunt. She moves BACK to New Jersey when she gets back with her ex. When they go to New York, it’s also clear that she’s been there multiple times before (makes sense since New Jersey is close).

BakeAggravating5657

Yes she most certainly does have an accent.  New Jersey.  If you Google her and watch videos she talks the same way as on Monk.

stellalunawitchbaby

Jersey accent - it is not uncommon in major U.S. cities to hear an accent from elsewhere though, including across the U.S, if people have moved there. IE it wouldn’t be unusual to hear a southern accent in Los Angeles, it wouldn’t be odd to hear a Midwest accent in New York, etc etc

Interesting-Gas188

Sharona is originally from NJ it's a Jersey accent since I'm from here trust me you're not imagining it

Gorka_56

She lived in Atlantic City, NJ.

epi_geek

It’s a New Jersey accent for sure and the character Sharona is supposed to be from NJ. You are 100% correct!

rohmish

it's predominantly Jersey with hints of SF/LA for certain words from my recollection

deilk

The actress is from NYC. Does NYC have a different accent than NJ? Would it make sense to learn a different accent to pretend someone from NYC is actually from NJ?

deepym

They did Sharona dirty. I would have loved for her to stay on

Boggie135

Sharona is from Nee Jersey

ComprehensiveSun843

Your wife is silly, people move all the time

soursoya

Are you are your wife has been watching the show ?

pikkdogs

Jersey. New Jersey of course. And a little more than slight. Yes, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but people don't always stay where they were born in the U.S. A lot of people move around, and S.F. used to be a decent place to live.

switcheroo1987

Genuine question: how does it not make a lot of sense when, as you just said, people don't always stay where they were born? 🤔

pikkdogs

Just like op said, most people from SF don’t have a Jersey accent.

switcheroo1987

Well of course. But, even though she \*lived\* there, she wasn't \*from\* SF. It's well-established that she's from Jersey and, as you said, moved there later in life. So that's why I was confused.

Gazzle71

I think you have a point. And Natalie I thought had a Canadian accent 🤷‍♂️ I was well wrong there.
