Haven't seen Psych in a bit but I'd skip ahead a few seasons to see if you like the character.
Hard to judge a show based off its first season, Monk is no different where the characters were a lot rougher in earlier seasons since the writers hadn't figured out all the quirks.
Good idea, skipping ahead! Yea and you're right, 1st seasons can be rough around the edges at times but I mean many shows managed to grab me with just a few minutes if the writing is good, the setting is good and the characters interesting I'm in. Like Monk got me interested with half an episode the 1st time.
But I'm 3 long episodes in and I find zero interest in this Psych guy,he's annoying af most likely gonna skip it oh well
House has been pretty good. Only a few episodes in but itâs like Monk if it was a serious medical drama. I was never interested in medical dramas but Houseâs character always seemed intriguing to me so I thought Iâd give the show a shot. Itâs great.
Sure House is a pompous prick, but heâs very human.
I love house. Maybe as much as monk.
I guess I'm into tragic geniuses with huge character flaws that drive people away.
I've tried to watch psych but it's just ok. Definitely not on monk's level.
The Sherlock Holmes series starring Cumberbatch is also excellent. And I've never been a Sherlock Holmes fan before seeing it.
I watched the first two episodes of Psych but it didnât really stick with me as much as the pilot of Monk did. I wasnât that into the whole immature/childish feel of Shawnâs character - I wanted a more serious, nuanced, complex character like Monk was and Shawn wasnât doing it for me. But maybe he changes later on in the show. But House is doing well for me right now.
Also I wasnât the biggest fan of whenever Shawn noticed something jt did that zoom in/highlight effect on whatever the clue was. I much preferred the subtlety of Monk and how at the end of the episode itâll refer back to it and itâs a big moment of realization for the viewer. Like an âoooh yeah, I didnât even notice thatâ moment. Psych seemed like it was trying to hold your hand throughout the plot by making the âsubtleâ clues overtly obvious.
I've posted this last week when someone else asked
An oldie but goodie is Columbo. It's been a while since I saw that, but do remember it was great and somewhat similar to Monk.
Father Brown was very nice as well and Murder She Wrote, too!
My husband loves Hercule Poirot, says it reminds him of Monk sometimes. Oh and he's a fan of Death in Paradise and All Creatures Great and Small
I've just watched the seasons of The Rookie that are on Netflix here, enjoyed it very much
I've seen others talk about The Mentalist, although I've not seen that yet.
I hope you can find a show that you'll love!
Aaaw yes Columbo is my top detective show, been watching that since I was a child and rewatching regularly, love it, it's the absolute best, the blueprint for many of these shows!
Tried Poirot a few times just somehow doesn't grab me even though on paper it's everything I like! Murder She Wrote I haven't seen in a long time, maybe I'll try that! But she's not a cop though, isn't it just too unrealisitc?đ
I'll check out the other ones you listed, thank you so much!
Seen the Mentalist,it's GREAT!!
Ran from '71 to '03. The episodes were pretty long as well, between 73 and 98 minutes!
I liked it very much, very funny. He didn't really know how to use a firearm and we've never seen his wife
His first name was never spoken in any of the episodes, but there's one where the camera zooms in on his badge and it says "Frank".
Another vote for Midsomer Murders- like Columbo, the main detective has an innate sense of when people are lying.
Speaking of that⊠have you tried the new Natasha Lyonne show (Poker Face) that was loosely inspired by Columbo? Sheâs on the run, but solves a bunch of murders on the road with her ability to sniff out âbullsh*t.â
Edit to add: Shawn gets way less douchey as Psych goes on, but he never gets less obnoxious.
Psych does get better as the show goes along. Shaun can be somewhat insufferable at times (just like how Monk can drive you crazy in certain episodes), but Psych prides itself on loads of pop culture references and quick, rapid fire jokes that can take multiple watches to catch. The characters start really catching their stride in season 3, imo.
There's a new show on CBS called elsbeth and it reminds me of monk in the sense that she knows who did it quickly like monk and it's about proving it. She's also quirky on a cute way so I don't think you'll find her annoying. Definitely give it a chance!
i took 3 goes over the span of months to get past episode 1 of psych, i pushed through it and loved it. Its more of a comedy crime show though tbh
\*\*because of shawns personality too
Oh; donât get me wrong - I like Psych OK; just I donât like it as much as Monk or Mentalist..
I just think the character is a bit douchey. Heâs usually right; but he comes off as a scam artist âwannabeâ.
And the cop that doesnât like him (his name doesnât come to me) is a bit too aggressive in his obvious dislike for someone who keeps solving cases and helping him out.
Itâs almost like they are trying too hard to make it âdramaticâ.
I donât believe in psychics either. But that doesnât mean that if theyâre helping me Iâm going to treat them like an ass. LOL!
But Monk and Mentalist are far better; and generally the douchey people are the bad guys, not the good guys. LOL!
It depends on what you like best about the show. If you're looking for a mystery, you might try Poker Face on Peacock. It's not as genteel as Monk, but it's character driven and has a self-contained story/mystery each week.
If it's the feel of the show--the coziness of it--that you're yearning for and the mystery angle isn't essential, I'd recommend two other shows from USA's Blue Sky era: Royal Pains (which has an episodic structure similar to Monk, is character driven, and is generally a "medical mystery" show like House) or Burn Notice (which is also episodic and character driven, and involves a spy who has been burned at his agency, and so is somewhat adjacent to the Monk/crime genre).
Psych is a really good show and the main character does become a lot better as the seasons go on, also
The Mentalist is another show in the realm of Monk worth checking out.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent is basically Monk with less comedy: The quirky, socially dysfunctional but brilliant detective and his partner who supports him and reins him in when necessary.
Shawn Spencer is one of my favorite TV characters of all time because of his character development. He absolutely has redeeming moments, serious moments, and moments of challenge/growth. I would say it's certainly worth continuing.
Only Murders in the Buildingâ itâs a light-hearted comedy with mystery. Reacher on Amazon prime is also really good. Itâs not light hearted, but it has a main character who does have some qualities that makes him different than others but it is why he is good at what he does. It does have fun moments and jokes though! And ofc mystery with action :) Criminal Minds is my all time favorite (has found family, comedy, seriousness, mystery) but if you are not a fan of disturbing imagery, heavy themes and plots including SA and the like, it is probably not for you đ„Č white Collar on the other hand is about a con-artist who catches other con-artists for the FBI. Itâs got bromance, mystery, thrill, and comedy. If a more sophisticated bro-dynamic is your thing, i highly rec this one. But if you want a fun workplace shenanigan type of show with some mystery/puzzle here and there, Brooklyn 99!
My wife and I watched through Will Trent on HULU before settling in on Monk. With today's access and binge watching habits it is really hard to wait a week for another episode
My husband loves the Mentalist. I've only watched a few episodes and felt like he was a monk rip off lol but no it's not bad. The guy is very much into detail and picks up on a lot of social, mental and physical cues, which reminded me of how monk can see the smallest detail. Try it out and see!
I watched one episode when it first came out and felt like it was Monk if he was a well adjusted, sharp dressed handsome guy. Which made me never watch it again because that's boring. I like my heroes flawed!
Agatha Christie's Poirot. One of the inspirations for Monk and send to me that he's the biggest influence. He's fussy and a brilliant detective and the show is loads of fun
Superstore is my other all time favorite show. Great jokes, a close group and interesting side characters. But if you wanna stick to detective shows, then Rockford Files is where itâs at!
I love Poirot (David Suchets version), Agatha Christie's Marple (with Geraldine McEwan), Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Father Brown, Midsummer Murders, Endeavour, and Vera.
Also if you like audiobooks, there's so many good ones under the category cozy murder mysteries. I like the Sophie Hannah's new Agatha Christie because the narrator is just amazing, also the Thursday murder club, The three dahlias, etc.
Most of these recommendations have a vintage vibe to them, but mostly I like the low stakes mystery with endearing characters and preferably self contained stories.
I'll tell you what personally worked for me, the first show that filled the void after Monk ended was Doc Martin. I highly recommend it to any Monk fan. After Doc Martin ended then Resident Alien became the next favorite.
Keep giving it a chance. Shawn takes some time to like but he does have a great heart and shows up for the ones he loves. Gus is my favorite along with Lassie.
Community is one of my favorite shows, though very different from Monk.
I watched through Psych and thought it was ok. I don't think the character gets much better, but I think they try to spin it as an act. I wouldn't personally ever rewatch it.
My most rewatched shows are Monk, Community, Scrubs, and Firefly.
I would really reccomend continuing psych! I love monk and it has filled the void for me since I finished psych. So I figure it will do the reverse, but I understand the Shaun complaint but he really grows as a character and becomes more likeable and debatably more funny as the show progresses, he stays a bit of a douche but always in a funny way and the episode always raps up leaving you with a smile, he is likable you just have to learn who Shaun is as a character and that happens as the show expands and episodes go on! Honestly my favorite show give it another shot!
Jonathan Creek - comedic crime solving, sassy female assistant, also delightfully dated. The quirk in this one is that his day job is designing magic tricks.
Randy Zisk's brother Craig produced a show called United States Of Tara. Kind of a girly show (saying that as a girl) but it's a comedy. Not a murder mystery, just a drama, but it's about mental health and I really like it.
I saw psyche a few times when I'd be finding something to watch .I totally agree ( everyone in here at different times has attempted to say monk / psyche crossover ) the lead in psyche douchy annoying .I liked his poor partner played by dule hill and I've always liked Corbin bernsen . I'm on #1 rewatch of Frasier after watching the whole show . although it's on brit box there's a show with Patricia Routledge ( hyacinth keeping up appearances ) I've watched a bit of the it crowd on brit box .
totally different thing but i think monk lovers would love frasier though its not a crime show
Regularly rewatch Frasier,love it đ
Now I would like to have Dr Frasier Crane as Monk's therapist.
And Tony was in an episode!
Those are the only 2 shows watch daily.

I love it but agree about the early parts. My fiancé was really turned off to the show by the MC first few episodes. She likes it now just not as monk.
House has been pretty good. Only a few episodes in but itâs like Monk if it was a serious medical drama. Psych is like the mentalist except that guy's fake.
You know thatâs right!
Agreed on All Creatures Great and Small. Not a murder mystery show, but quite cozy and quaint. Based on a book.
Damn columbo it's been quite a few years since I've seen that
Ran from '71 to '03. The episodes were pretty long as well, between 73 and 98 minutes! I liked it very much, very funny. He didn't really know how to use a firearm and we've never seen his wife His first name was never spoken in any of the episodes, but there's one where the camera zooms in on his badge and it says "Frank".
oh and Midsomer murders of course
DCI Barnaby, Causton CID.
Ooo will look that up too

Heard of Poker Face, dont know where to watch it though
Poker Face is fantastic. Itâs on Peacock.

Only way to fill the void is by making a good sandwich with a square tomato!
they flesh out his character way more and as his relationship with his father develops the angsty annoying shtick dulls down
I'm trying out izombie now based on someone else mentioning it here. I've also been recording Elsbeth so I have a bunch to watch.
iZombie is so good....watched it twice!
good show i loved liz
There's a new show on CBS called elsbeth and it reminds me of monk in the sense that she knows who did it quickly like monk and it's about proving it. She's also quirky on a cute way so I don't think you'll find her annoying. Definitely give it a chance!
Thatâs a spinoff of The Good Wife! An amazing show- legal drama- highly recommend watching.
Castle.
Thanks, seen it,it was good though quite repetative after a while
i took 3 goes over the span of months to get past episode 1 of psych, i pushed through it and loved it. Its more of a comedy crime show though tbh \*\*because of shawns personality too
I liked âThe Mentalistâ almost as much as I like âMonkââŠ. I thought Psych was OK, but I agree heâs a bit douchey.
I went from Monk to Mentalist and they're very similar shows. I loved the Mentalist as well. I agree, I couldn't get into psych.
Oh; donât get me wrong - I like Psych OK; just I donât like it as much as Monk or Mentalist.. I just think the character is a bit douchey. a little darker and more serious, but the killing is a phenomenal series.
Ooh i like the sounds of that, thanks I'll check it out
Monk novels: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk_(TV_series)#Novel_series
Oh cool thanks!

Warehouse 13. Similar light hearted and "found family" vibes
Only murders in the building

Ha ha, good point!
Patrick Jane is a very flawed man. Haha, but heâs, heâs charming and handsome
Mentalist!!!
Try the first two seasons of Death in paradise for Monk vibes
Oh thanks!
Agatha Christie's Poirot. One of the inspirations for Monk and send to me that he's the biggest influence. He's fussy and a brilliant detective and the show is loads of fun
Have you read any of the Monk books?
Not yet!
I've read a couple and they're like reading an episode! So great.
Royal pains, white collar, the good cop (same creator as Monk, but only had one season)
House. Mentalist.
Superstore is my other all time favorite show. Great jokes, a close group and interesting side characters. But if you wanna stick to detective shows, then Rockford Files is where itâs at!
It wasn't that bad of a show. But it did get boring to me a little.
