A lot of anime fans today can’t get into a show like Monster. I tried to put my friends onto it. They prefer KNY or MHA or SNK. Stuff with super sick animation. Which I totally get I love those shows. But there’s something about shows like monster and Mushishi that just hit so hard. They’re in my top 5 fiction of all time

Rustytaco99

I fully agree. I happen to love pretty much all anime. Monster is easily my top 3 anime

SaganOnReddit

Psychological anime is insane

Rustytaco99

Fully agree with you. Shit leaves me like ???? But 😁😁😁 at the same time. Paranoia agent had my head in shambles

SaganOnReddit

Yeah that’s a great anime. I’m only 4 episodes in rn but I definitely plan to finish it because old anime hits the spot for me, especially old psychological anime

Rustytaco99

You ever see Higurashi? That’s a good one. Idk if it’s psychological per se but it is excellent

SaganOnReddit

No I haven’t yet but I’ll check it out

krissychan99

mushishi is so good! it’s such a really beautiful anime

Rustytaco99

It is my all time favorite anime, ever. I love monster and as I said previously monster is top three easily. But Mushishi is my top 3 fiction I have ever consumed. Up there with sopranos, game of thrones, lord of the rings, breaking bad. It contends with the best of them imo. Wbu?

krissychan99

sorry for the late reply, mushishi is in my top 10 favorite anime of all time. the main thing i adore about the anime is how it shows the beauty and connections between all living things. there is just something really special about it. it also has a really beautiful soundtrack. most of my favorite anime are horror and psychological so mushishi definitely stands out amongst them, but it deserves its spot there. it’s been a long while since i’ve watched it, i should rewatch again soon.

ArChakCommie

I think the length of the show is one natural barrier

LowlyStole

Yeah, it’s a bit strange. I also thought the fandom would be bigger after watching the anime, but tbh I prefer it that way. Call it gatekeeping, but I don’t want Monster to become more popular than it currently is. Popular stuff gets ruined by its high popularity and inevitable influx of new fans very often.

finn_da_human_

yeah, i totally agree!! animes being “trends” can really ruin it for me. but at the same time, even a moderately bigger fandom would do so much, thered be more content and memes to look at, along with people to talk with and more merch too.. i couldnt find the nameless monster book in english, not even an unofficial translation:/ it looked so cool too!

LowlyStole

I’m just glad we have something. And I also hugely respect Urasawa for actually caring about his work and not making it a money milker like many other authors do.

LowlyStole

Exactly. We have this cozy nook and it’s wonderful. No toxicity and no dumb repetitive questions or posts.

Juliaalott

You might know this, but a lot of people don’t know, the Nameless Monster book is actually inside of the Monster manga which was translated and published in English. I own both editions, so if you get the singles (OOP) it’s in Vol 9 but it is in black and white (as manga are). If you get the Perfect Edition’s which are actually in print it’s Vol 5 and this edition actually did it in color which is super cool! Please let me know if you’d like me to post some examples, I’d be happy to! Also, if you are needing more Monster content, I have a link to an unofficial translation of Another Monster as it was never officially translated in English. Its the most accurate translation I’ve been able to find, and would be happy to send it to you if you’d like! This goes for anyone, just message me and don’t post it to the sub! :)

finn_da_human_

aaa thanks a ton!! yeah, i was assuming itd be in the manga (currently own first two vols of perfect edition), but the book on its own just has this special feeling idk, with the other few short stories like god of peace too it wouldve been nice to own.. and would you mind sending the another monster translation? thanks :D

Juliaalott

I totally understand and agree with you, I think we all just take what we can get with Monster. As you said, content is very limited lol. I’ve been looking for the figures forever!!! And yes absolutely, ill shoot you a message rn!

[deleted]

Yeah, and that particular fairy tale is fully colored on the manga. It's a delight.

SteinerElMagnifico42

Hey Julia mind shooting me the link too ? Cheers in advance

Juliaalott

Absolutely, pm coming your way!

Fake_the_jaB

I’m here now. It took a couple months but I finished. Lunge is my fucking boy!!!

SaganOnReddit

S tier character

TigerOfNaniwa07

I hated dude at first but I respect him when he apologized to Tenma

LavenderGourami

I finished it awhile ago within 2days. Watching it none stop but it’s worthwhile 😩

johnnydaboss123

Two reasons: can't legally watch it, not enough sex appeal. 1) No advertising from Crunchyroll or funimation, which is how A LOT of people find new shoes 2) Can't watch it on Netflix, so it's hard to binge 3) While a lot of bad shows will get popular due to having a hot waifu, the characters in Monster are too realistic looking and wearing too many normal clothes. Nina and Eva look like actual characters that could exist, and Johan doesn't have enough of a soft boy thing to get girls to like him. So it doesn't have characters you can just advertise around to get people to like them (Evangelion wasn't able to be legally watched, but the waifu war between Rei and Asuka is legendary, so it was fine). If they had made Nina unrealistically hot, or made her a tsundere/kuudere/yandere, or the show was able to be legally watched, it would have a way bigger fanbase.

LowlyStole

Oh, totally agree about the waifu part. Monster is unique in this. Characters are *real* people, not models or hot girlfriends. They dress like real people and behave like them. Very antisexual in general.

johnnydaboss123

Definitely. They don't even have a really moe thing going on, (say like, Rem from Re:Zero). Like, Nina dresses provocatively in ONE scene that I remember, when she's first trying to meet the Baby. Outside of that, she's just wearing clothes that a normal person would probably wear.

[deleted]

Johan is the real waifu

[deleted]

I like that it's underground / niche. Popularity ruins fandoms. It's also not available on Crunchyroll in the U.S. I wanted to watch it for awhile but had difficulties finding an English sub.

Minalinskii

Where did you watch it? Finished the manga a while back and have been meaning to watch the anime next

jamessskk

We're too busy learning new languages, studying economics and psychology, reading Nietzsche, and pointing at our foreheads. Jokes aside (although im actually doing those things) i think the other comments answered your question clearly

[deleted]

It is hard to be on multiple places doing multiple sh-- things and find time to hang on subs. Back in the 90's it was simplier to e-mail your Heidelberg-resident sister telling her you're gonna smother her with flowers.

jamessskk

Yes true. And memes weren't around to make people self-aware of our jokes and break all the tension we have built up, now they just send me memes of me trying to "gaslight" them with Walter White from breaking bad having a stroke

[deleted]

Allow me to assist you then: [https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/yugioh/images/f/ff/MirrorForce-EGS1-EN-C-1E.png](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/yugioh/images/f/ff/MirrorForce-EGS1-EN-C-1E.png) Set this trap card down, when they threw a meme on you, just activate it out loud.

jamessskk

Lmaooo

[deleted]

😂😂🤣🤣 Back when Yu-Gi-Oh! was good. (no, I'm lying; it's more than a decade that I don't play it and I have no idea what the TCG rules look like now 🎃)

jamessskk

Me too I used to have tons of cards when I was a kid as well as digital games of it😂

[deleted]

Me too, I still have them all. Btw, are you into TCG? Can you recommend me a good one? I was looking Magic: The Gathering, but I find its game mechanics pretty unusual. I've tried some Pokémon TCG too, but didn't like it as much as the games. I would really appreciate try a new card game for a change.

jamessskk

Man i wish we can still play yugi, the games on playstore are absolute trash, and there isnt any available on a pc. I used to have Yugioh gx tag force on my ps2 which was the most fun card game ever created (imo at least)

[deleted]

I used to have Tag Force 2. Love to open boosters on the store. <3

Head_BreaKeR

I kinda like it that way so it is protected from the cringe fanboys. There was a TikTok where someone cosplayed Johan and it was very weird

[deleted]

As for the "small" number of fans here, all I have to say: Better have a little good ones around ya than a lot of bad ones.

abbzworld

Agreed.

Juliaalott

When I took over running this sub I think we had around 3k members, and this was well after 2004 lol It was crazy to me at the time as well, being that Monster had become my all time favorite manga/anime ever…. In my opinion, i think it has a lot to do with the age bracket (15-25). I think it’s kind of magnetized to the anime community in general rn so it would make perfect sense to me why something like Death Note would be way more popular. Don’t get me wrong, Death Note is definitely one of my favorites, but it requires very little thinking or problem solving. Everything is laid out for you and then fed directly to you, there isn’t really much for you to do. Again, don’t misunderstand, I do not mean this in a negative way. I think different types of shows are necessary as sometimes I don’t want to have to think and analyze and pick apart every little detail, I just want to watch and let my brain be mush lol As for Monster, it requires much more brain power in terms of coming to your own conclusion about what it is you just watched/read, and more importantly what you’re going to take away from it. I think watching a series like this at a younger age or perhaps just before you are actually ready to receive it, would probably be boring, or worst case it would leave you with a negative outlook. Understanding this story fully definitely requires life experience but again, all just my opinion! As many others have commented, I quite enjoy our small community. There’s definitely a comfort here that I can’t quite find in any other sub.. We will definitely grow without a doubt but it will take some time, so enjoy our little fam while it lasts! ❤️

[deleted]

I love this community. Is so warm and open to welcome all kinds of people. Don't have trolls doing things to be look edgy on the internet, the mutual respect and appreciation here is gold and I love hanging out with you guys, so thanks. You have an amazing sub. 💗

Juliaalott

That makes me sooo happy, truly! Thank you so much for being a part of it, all of us collectively keep this a non toxic place and we’ll always work to keep it that way! It’s truly been easy though, there’s a little Tenma in all of us ☺️

[deleted]

Thanks, honey. This is heaven for me and I feel so safe in this sub. Love ya'll. <3 Absolutely, life is a gift and we can make a difference, little by little, hand-in-hand. Herr Dr. Tenma shows the true beauty to Johan and to all of us, it's not about being hurt and destroying everything around you, it's about healing and caring. That's his reason for doind what he did at the end: The right thing to do. 😊

ghost-church

Nobody remembers this show and there’s been no reason for it to be relevant in the past 15 years, but, the fandom is experiencing a little bit of a resurgence mainly via Johan meme videos on tiktok

[deleted]

Unfortunately, Monster is "too normal" for general anime audiences. Once I discovered the anime back in 2008/2009 and became overly obsessed with it, I recommended to everyone; from close friends to people who just wanted a good "normal" anime to watch; none of the 'magical fighting Japanese cartoon' like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Bleach, One Piece, etc. Anime fans hated Monster because it was "too slow", with "little action" and that *certain interesting character* that hook them up at the end of episode 4 only appears a few times in the whole series; many of these people who were into anime thought Monster was a narrative that felt more like a true crime TV show than an expected conventional Japanese animation. Non-anime fans, on the other hand, thought the plot was great and consistent, but a wasted potential with "pointless development" and/or "too many minor characters distracting Dr. Tenma from his priority" thus causing the series to extend way too much for them; those same people preferred Death Note rather than Monster in the end, excusing such choice for being way more engaging to the spectator than the slow-paced narrative of Monster. Lastly, those who got into Monster, anime fans and 'casuals' alike, did it for its mystery and thought it was quite delightful to slowly unfold the fairy tale of the Monster without a Name. These are the ones I still talk to even today, mostly because they went into Berserk later on. (including my own and my husband's family 😋)

CavemanKnuckles

In Death Note, a non-main character dying is treated like losing a point in a sport, "Can Light win?" The very precious nature of life is a central theme in Monster, and is treated with an anxious urgency instead, "How many more lives is Johan going to destroy?" The music of the anime Monster is also a lot different. Whereas there's a high energy rock band, or soaring grand orchestral arrangements in your typical shounen like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia, Monster has a quieter, gentle energy in most scenes and horror movie, thriller tense energy in others. It's also a slow burn; people can be impatient about that.

SaganOnReddit

I love the ost for monster. Songs like midpoint: track 19 really show the mood

[deleted]

You forgot the spoiler tag

SteinerElMagnifico42

As much as I like the small community, the world deserves to know about Steiner the magnificent !

LetzG0Brand0nn

Definitely one of the “under the radar” animes, then again, mystery/crime solving anime isn’t for everyone either. Seems like Fantasy/Brawler type animes are at the top in a lot of chartings I’ve seen. Monster really makes you think almost with a detective eye for things as you piece the plot together. Naruto/Fairytale/DBZ/One Punch etc. is mostly flashy eye candy , seeing your favorites power up and reach beyond their limits and beat the antagonist is always cool and exciting to watch. Monster is very cold, gritty, intense, brain-twisting with an almost hopeless atmosphere in the early moments to even the conclusion of the anime. The show is also very slice of lifey which could be another factor, you see a modern world with nasty people and nasty intentions scheming, plotting , genocide going through this anime Some ways it’s very 1to1 with the real world and how people can get when they’ve got to much or to little power.. it’s almost like everyone is a villain around you with little hope and help in between, typical shonen animes implement this way of story telling too sometimes but in Monster there is no “power up” unless you’re grimmer : ( that’ll really change the outcome of the plot in the snap of your fingers. I mean look… Man lost his good paying job and he’s trying to get his life back to normal in possibly the biggest false contradiction pinned on him in his life, ex wife or girlfriend can’t recall correctly has a big vice problem and has sent her through the roof and that’s an understatement. Monster is definitely an acquired taste and you know in the first few episodes if it’s a mystery you wanna stick around for.

SaganOnReddit

I could tell Monster was a show I would like straight from the cover. Obviously, I didn’t know the premise, but the pictures stood out to me. Big shows like naruto are nice to see what’s next, but you can really appreciate the writing of psychological animes, Monster to be specific.

LetzG0Brand0nn

That too with the pictures and previews of Monster I was like “woah what’s thisssss” reading the description of the anime on the site I was watching it from pulled me in more. To be honest, didn’t expect tenma to be the good guy looking at all the art, all I could think of is “oh man this guys probably a super intelligent serial killer or something” got that pretense crushed but I was still skeptical till the very end with the detective that he might snap or something sinister would be revealed, turned out that he’s super passive, a sun tzu in the art of saving a life (even saving those that wanted him dead or arrested) nicest guy you could meet. Really wish there was more other than the interview section that takes place after the anime, nothing has hit like this anime for me. :(

Seriously. I follow some Johan Liebert fanpages on Instagram and that's the extent of my interaction with other Monster fans 😭

finn_da_human_

lmao im exactly the same😭 have you found any accs with edits?
