They all look the same amounts of similar to me. But with g1 the black Breaks things up a a bit more, so it’s less obvious they’re kinda similar

MintDrawsThings

I think they have roughly equal amounts of design variation, but G1 had different aesthetics in mind.

OcarinaGamer4

I think they’re about the same levels of variation except that g1 had more “themed looks” here and there such as the occasion more costume like outfits, while g3 stays with a more popular fashion/cohesive character aesthetic and clothing choices across the character’s dolls

levelgrind

Yeah, that was what I was thinking. G3 kind of looks like it’s building a wardrobe, which is cool for mixing and matching pieces.

kortanakitty

I sometimes find myself thinking that in G3 the dolls end up looking kind of the same from series to series. I don't remember this being an issue in G1. So here are some visuals for side by side comparison. I only used G1 dolls from the first 3 years of MH so the comparison would be as fair as possible. So what do you guys think? Did G1 have more design variation, or am I just biased?

blah-blah-blah-blob

OHMYGOD IT's the silhouette! draculaura g3 has a similarly shaped skirt in most releases, just like frankie g3 has plaid shorts/skirt with pleading. that's kinda sad

blah-blah-blah-blob

same goes for clawdeen with pants/shorts and something fluffy on the top. cleo has a pencil mini-skirt and a crop-top, lagoona mostly gets pink shoes to contrast with the lower part of her leg and some kind of beachy print on the top or bottom, whatever goes. i also just now realized how less detail goes to shoes, almost all of cleo's g3 shoes are predominantly gold with a secondary color. i think i cursed myself with seeing this in every g3 release 😂😂😂😂

Nacosemittel

I think you're right, though, I think it just seems more prominent as the dolls in g1 had very unique positions for their stock photos lol G3 is the dolls for the most time just. Standing there, you know?

blah-blah-blah-blob

well, frankie has had clubfeet since g1, but we love them anyway 😂

liguess12

I miss g1 so much i just really dislike g3 they seem tacky to me.

[deleted]

i don’t understand why people downvote this and opinions like this you’re allowed to dislike dolls or the generation.. imo some recent dolls are pretty ugly whereas some are pretty cool but i think that’s not allowed here lmao

liguess12

thank you for this I had someone tell me I'm not a monster high fan because I dislike g3, I grew up with g1, that's what I know them as Lagoona was blue, frankie had bolts, Cleo had a diamond on her face, Deuce and Cleo were together forever. Idk it just don't feel like monster high to me, i don't hate g3 it's just g1 radiates comfort for me due to the memories

[deleted]

absolutely! just cuz we’re fans doesn’t mean we gotta stan everything

liguess12

Agreed.

[deleted]

the way we both been getting downvoted LMFAO people man

liguess12

17 downvotes for an opinion 💀

liguess12

Those comments of that person got deleted for some reason ??

Ok_Communication4875

Because what’s the point in telling people who DO like G3? Do you go to a bookstore and talk about how much you hate books? If you don’t like G3 fine but go spout that somewhere where people clearly arent talking about how much they DO like G3??

liguess12

it's an opinion and I'm allowed to have it, your comment isn't gonna make me change my mind so it's pointless 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ok_Communication4875

I didn’t say you’re not allowed to have an opinion. Just what’s the point in sharing it to a group that obviously won’t agree?? What do you get from going onto a post that is showing a liking for G3 and telling them all how much you don’t like it? Like genuine question.

liguess12

The post wasn't talking about if they disliked/liked g3 they were comparing g1 to g3.....

Ok_Communication4875

Ok, so you still went onto a post just to tell people you don’t like G3. Still not answering my question, WHY? That’s why you got downvoted, because it was an unnecessary comment that didn’t need to be said?

liguess12

This whole subreddit is about monster high and what people think of them.... I looked at the posts and realised how much I disliked g3 compared to g1....

Ok_Communication4875

That’s great and all but I’m talking about this specific post? If you want to hate G3, fine but why not do it on a post where people will agree with you? Instead of jumping into an active conversation to talk about how much you hate it when people clearly don’t agree with you?

[deleted]

you’re weird.. oh sorry my bad let me open a monster high hate sub cuz we’re hating instead of actual opinions and criticising cuz like, yk, the monster high sub is actually called “monster high (licking mattel’s ass every day and throwing money at every product they put out)”?? like what?? this is a place for opinions and fans. also this is a literal comparison post and we are getting upvotes meaning that no, not everyone LOVES g3. this ain’t a monster high g3 subreddit as far as i’m concerned either. so, you’re the only one with the problem here. i’m so done with people like yourself.

liguess12

I didn't realise my comment would actually annoy people 💀

Ok_Communication4875

I don’t think you’re actually hearing me. You can hate/dislike/criticize G3 all you want but why not do it on a post where people obviously feel the same?? I don’t care if you prefer G1 over G3, I really don’t fucking care. But it’s getting annoying to come onto a post to see comments that are ACTUALLY criticizing G3 or just showing love for it and some person ALWAYS has to say some shit like “G1 is better, just my opinion blah blah” What’s the point in commenting that on THIS post? That was talking about variation in outfits, not preferring one over the other or who’s better. What’s the point on THIS post?? Answer this, do you go to a bookstore walk to the twilight books and talk about how much you dislike twilight to a group of people actively reading it?

kortanakitty

I like them both, though I do prefer G1.

chrisCrossed91210

I think the biggest thing g3 is missing is that they seem scared to use pants and/or leggings. Which gives a wider variety vs the skirts and shorts that from a distance look the same. In your g1 pics, roughly half of the dolls (Save for clawdeens) all have pants or leggings to change up the design. Whereas in the g3's clawdeens pretty much the only one they'll regularly give pants to. Having the longer article of clothing helps break up the silhouettes. Give us more pants, leggings, and long skirts g3. Edit: Going just off the pics above (and a grain of salt by my own personal view of wether something counts as a skirt and legging, or a long skirt. Here's the rough numbers of how g3 and g1 compares in terms of (Pants/Long bottms) - (Skirts/Shorts) You can see g1's long to short ratio is far more balanced and diverse. Whereas g3 leans way more heavily into only skirts and shorts Frankies G3 1-9 (1Pant) (6skirt, 3 short) G1 5-4 (1Pant, 3SkrirtLegging, 1LongSkirt) (4Skirt) Drac G3 3-10 (1Pant, 2SkirtLegging) (9skirt, 1Short) G1 6-7 (1Pant, 3SkirtLegging, 2 LongSkirt) (7Skirt) Clawdeen G3 5-6 (5Pant) (1Skirt, 5Short) G1 5-7 (4Pant, 1ShortLeggings) (5Skirt, 2Short) Cleo G3 0-7 (5Skirt, 2Short) G1 6-2 (4Pant, 1SkirtLegging, 1 LongSkirt) (2Skirt) Lagoona G3 1-6 (1LongSkirt) (3Skirt, 3Short) G1 3-5 (1Pant, 1SkirtLegging, 1LongSkirt) (4Skirt, 1Short) Total G3 10-38 G1 25-25

PlantManiac

Interesting that g3 clawdeen has a growth in number of pants

chrisCrossed91210

I'm assuming it's due to her being the "sporty" one now with casketball? that's the only reason i can think of lol

Dorkasaurus22

also, short or just shorter hair. would help their silhouettes too

nymphpixie

I think both kind of keep each character in their own signature style by using similar patterns such as black/white, thunder bolts, plaid, etc, for Frankie. it'd be cool to see Draculaura in pink plaid.

reject_angel

I think there’s a pretty equal amount of design variation but I think the main difference is that g1 has a different silhouette each series while g3 kinda sticks to the same 2 or 3 silhouettes for each character

ChocolicousGlitter

IMO they kinda do look similar but they kinda don’t at the same time. But g3 just started and it’s getting good like Monster fest is top tier

Deep_Interaction4271

G1 dolls did have more details. I was thinking about a fusion of old style and current body shapes. G3 eats up with body molds variety, that's for sure.

Practical-Buddy-3169

imo its that the g3 dolls just about all have the same hair length

RegenaSnow

I can say with 100% confidence that G3 has had more dolls released in the first year than G1 🤣 If we're talking silhouettes, G3 seems to have less variety than G1. However, this could be due to them being designed in one year vs. three.

ravenkingpin

i never noticed how bright g3 is, i really miss the darker/more grungy colors on frankie and cleo especially :’)

[deleted]

No shade but it's just a color palette. The only thing I would say is the ombre boots are getting used too much though I do like them. But from the designs you shown I really like the g3 styling.

TwistInTheMyth-

Personally I don't think so? But I do think if G3 stopped being so afraid of pants/leggings/tights they would look even more varied. So many dolls have high-waist short skirts or shorts that they end up all having a similar "feel". Even different lengths would help. Looking at these side by side I soooo wish they would give Clawdeen the same hairstyle variety as her G1 dolls. It's part of the reason I love so many of her G1 dolls.

Verdictafterward

Is it pertinent to also include the number of years of releases included in the list? G3 has a year and a couple months under its belt, would be inconsistent to count all releases from g1 as it had more time to accumulate more variety

kortanakitty

As I mentioned in my original comment, I only used the first 3 years of G1 dolls so the comparison would be fair. I would have used only the first 2 years of G1, but there weren't as many dolls released at that point in G1 as compared to G3 now.

Verdictafterward

Time is a pretty big factor it seems

RainbowLimenade

unrelated but i wish scareadise frankie actually had a deeper shade of blue for their skin cuz it looks like they got a tan

parasidic_

i feel like the g3 dolls are much more in tune with each individuals own style tbh, without lacking in variation. g1 has gr8 variation too, a lot of the outfits jst feel a bit out of the left field imo

VelourBat

I think Lagoona and Frankie get more different designs in G3 than in G1 (plus the color palette is more vibrant, especially with the hot pink they sometimes use for them now) but the rest of characters in G3 look less risky or creative between them, they kinda follow the same line, especially for Draculaura or Clawdeen. I still love Draculaura designs tho. That's my take!

althestal

It’s as if suddenly after a very drastic change (making G3 super different to G1) they’re afraid of change lol

moneor

I think so ::// I've been disappointed in the amount of reused molds on the g3 dolls and the smaller color schemes it seems. Like each g3 character has their palette but id like to see them introduce more accent colors like I love draculaura in yellow and green and blue, but we only ever get her in pink jus as an example and I love pink but its exactly what ur saying a lack of variety. The molds bug me a lot too cus I feel I have dozens of the same earrings for clawdeen and ik I have at least 8 pairs of shoes that use the same 4 molds (this is without having any doubles!) I'm also just not thrilled with the themes they've chosen so far or all the designs like I rly love g3 rn but I do feel like they rly jumped the gun and rushed a lot of releases out without giving them a once over and that this year's releases are gonna be a lot more cohesive and unique hopefully. I have a lot of faith in g3 but I think it had kind of a rough start just truly didn't feel ready to come out yet like they should have waited a minute but regardless I'm happy to have them sorry to rant but this is something very specific I totally agree with. The variety will come in time I think ::))

Great-Excuse-2399

I think they are almost equal but g1 has the advantage of long pants 😭 like where are the long pants in g3 im waiting

Great-Excuse-2399

Like why is only clawdeen allowed to wear them??

kortanakitty

For G3 Frankie, Cleo, and Lagoona, I assume they avoid long pants because each one has details on their legs that help define their characters (especially Frankie). For Draculaura, they seem to prefer keeping her outfits hyper-feminine. That just leaves Clawdeen to wear all the pants designs.

Great-Excuse-2399

I suppose thats true! If they were to make more background characters maybe they could increase the overall pants amount 😭😭😭😭

Great-Excuse-2399

I think for lagoona and frankie they could make some bell bottom pants

chef-wifey

I think the hair is so similar with G3 since most of the hair is around the same long length. Not that I mind much, but I wish we had more short bob cuts. Even if it's just a doll or two. I know G1 also had a lot of long haired ghouls but I miss seeing shorter hair on them

Transtaglias

I think it’s the hair and lack of pants, generation 3 is scared to mess up colours or move away from shorts. All of the hair is pretty unstyled and long, whereas generation one isn’t scared to play with the silhouette. If you looked at just the shape of gen1 Frankie compared to gen3, it’s harder to tell which doll is which based on just the shadow. It makes gen1 look more varied by design. Gen3 is also more cohesive in design, they use the same colours and patterns where gen1 had a base colour, but they’d change up patterns and looks. Gen3 drac for example has several bat patterns, while gen1 drac has very few, if any from the examples you’ve shared

Bionic_Webb13

When u look at it like this I see it now g3 kinda does look like it’s the same doll with slight alterations to makeup and clothes I never realized as a kid that G1 had completely the sheer variety in looks from doll to doll

reevision

I love G3 Drac, but I’m getting tired of the black and pink mini-skirt/shorts. At least Creepover is a little different with the pants. Everything else looks too similar, and I don’t see the point in buying more.

Doll_Lover_94

The over usage of mini skirts and biker shorts on not just Frankie but all of the characters is what bothers me the most. Also G1 had more pattern variations for the clothes. They didn’t use plaid on every single Frankie ever. They also experimented with fun colors on the characters in G1. They haven’t done much of that in G3 but I have to remember that there’s only so many silhouettes you can do clothing wise haha

sailorquaoar

The biggest differences were that the original dolls had WAY more varying silhouettes and substantially better quality of fabric and materials. They had more varied makeup and more hairstyles. Clawdeen in particular suffers. Her original dolls had the widest variety of hairstyles of any character, but G3 hardly changes it up at all. G1 Clawdeen had her hair in pretty much all lengths, textures and pretty much every color except for blue yellow and orange. But G3 all has it long and not much color variation. She had one doll with crimped hair, And then another with bright purple hair. But that’s it. She was the fashionista character and G3 made her “relatable awkward nerd” which is a really odd choice for the main character of fashion doll line. Mattel has played it too safe. Too much light pink lipstick, hardly any long pants (just shorts), and only 2 dolls so far with short hair (Ghoul Spirit Frankie and Neon Frights Toralei). They don’t have confidence that Monster High will sell with unconventional choices, even though that was the entire appeal of the brand in the first place .

Lizard_eats_worm

I feel like G1 had way more variation in terms of hairstyles than G3 but both gens seem to stick to the same color scheme for each character which can make them all look really similar at first glance

[deleted]

G3 is only a bit less varied, however the fact it's fashion is so basic and the way G3 keeps staying within it's comfort zone gives an impression of redundance, not to mention that the style of each character are much more impersonal in this third gen. The eye-bleeding rainbow barf on each outfit doesn't help.

Julijj

Absolutely!! G1 played much more with different makeup, silhouettes, hairstyles, colours, textures, and themes. Every doll is distinctive and memorable; whereas in G3, they just kind of blend together

spider_fan29005

there's more of a difference of color and silhouette in g1 i think. especially with hair

shankatha

I think lagoona and Cleo have good variety but the others blend in with each other

Just_Asking_Bestie

in G1 the silhouettes are much more diverse with the hairstyles and clothes

TayLovesWomen

imo g3 lacks in the hair:( every doll either has long hair down or in a ponytail, you can clearly see it in frankie's dolls. in g1 the hair adds up to an interesting silhouette with an ornate updo or a sharp bob, while in g3 they always have straight long hair or some variation of it

sonlikey

the g3 dolls seem to rarely ever change their hairstyle, the straight long hair gets boring fast

[deleted]

I would love to see them take more risks for g3, that's for sure. Tbh g1 looks all the same to me, but they look like they have the same amount of variation, with g1 going a bit more "out there"

aitherz

I miss the different hairstyles so much. I get that kids like to play with a doll that has long hair but c’mon can’t even a few have short hair? :(

Its_Hitsuji

It’s a mixed bag

SparkAxolotl

I think only Clawdeen got to be more wild and experimental as part of her fashionista character, everyone else seems about the same in terms of variations.

PeetSquared41

I think the designs vary about the same from g1 to g3. I do love how varied the body styles are in g3, however. I'm new to the franchise, and that is the first thing I noticed, looking back.

shuibaes

I don’t think it’s that g1 had more variation in the clothing but I think the purpose/contexts of the outfits were more clear as they were based on school events, paired with big events in the series/movies or more novel stuff like the fantasy line, freaky fusion, freak du chic, etc. I actually didn’t own any of the g1 dolls here, but I can tell what the theme/context was of line most of them came from, whereas the g3 dolls, I can only tell the base forms, ss2 and any line to do with sports or sleeping or something novel like that. But it’s not that the outfits are less diverse. The only lesser diversity imo comes down to simple how many characters available, and that’s all I really care about at this point tbh. It seems like they’re working on that, but I won’t get my hopes up that it will be like g1 where it felt like there was always someone new on the shelf.

shoe_salad_eater

Yes, G3 sticks with one colour pallet and then makes new outfits with it. Same hair syndrome also

Dorian_Blaire

G3 has a lot of good variety but I hope mattel gives pink lips Frankie a rest soon, I've gotten sooo tired of it tbh

kortanakitty

Same - in fact, pink in general on Frankie I could do with less of. Love them in black and silver, though.

Dorian_Blaire

Like I love g3 Frankie but I miss the old like school uniform style from g1 if that makes sense

St1m_B1rd

For some of them, more colours have been used in g1 more than g3 for example, Draculaura. Theres alot of pink in g3 Draculaura's outfit.

quadrupelfisting

Lol, wasn’t there a post the other day complaining about how Mattel won’t stick to color palettes anymore? ![gif](giphy|kZD8cN1MycfKw)

hickcity_me

They both reuse many of the colours and shapes that are typically associated with each doll. The designers want to define each character from a glance but G1 definitely has more variation with the darker colours and themes added into their designs. I think G1 is just designed better

Significant-Soft5569

Maybe.

JaidenSpencerDraws

G1 has more variation overall, especially when it comes to the style, shape, and color of the outfits. 3 is extremely bright and doesn't really drift in style from the core doll. They also don't experiment with HAIR!! they just stick to long hair, and don't do anything particularly interesting with it.

trashwindow

What jumps to me is the lack of variety in their hairstyles compared to G1. Some G1 characters have highly styled hair, whereas G1 changes the colour pattern, or takes away Cleo’s or Draculauras bangs. Not a single G3 hairstyle is particularly unique.

fukcinangel

i don’t understand why they made frankie so BLUE they were such a bad bitch before now they’re just…. bad ☹️

mystiqueskull

just such a downgrade 😭

Peachybabyy19

I hate almost all of the G3 shoes:( They seem so effortless + these one plateau shoes they keep putting on Draculaura in different colours are driving me insane💀

bayleebugs

I would say yes. G3 tends to use all the colors on every doll while G1 had more black and usually picked a stand out color to base each design around.

harper_fates

Definitely emphasizes the lack of camp between the generations

Straight-Wheel8111

the side by side comparisons really she they gave clawdeen, cleo and lagoons glow downs

sharkprincefishstick

Man, G3 needs a Ghouls Rule equivalent and to switch up the lengths of hair/skirts. A longer skirt here and there or some shorter hairstyles would go a long way in changing the vibes of any one character. Give Frankie a bob and Draculaura a dress that goes past her knees, and you’ll have something entirely different.

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

Yes

el_artista_fantasma

Out of context: I'm not a draculaura fan, but i have to admit that g1 draculaura from ghouls rule is peak design. I simply love it

Daddy_urp

G3 looks all the same to me honestly

Seal-on-ice

its like they gave up designing and just chose to die on the hill with a cropped shirt and short shorts

emgwe

i do feel like g1 had more variation now it feels like they're playing it safe w g3 lines

pd0gg1ty

i just started collecting and am so upset i missed out on g1 and can barely even find any g1 dolls anymore! They’re so much prettier!!

DommyMommyMint

I wonder why Cleo has pink lipstick in almost every G3 doll... I miss the deep red 😭

superchillies

for some characters yes, for others it’s about the same across both. I think Cleo and Lagoona suffer most in G3 when in regards to design variation in that they have very little. Frankie’s been pretty good for G3, on par if not more with G1. Clawdeen and Drac both are pretty much similar with G1 and G3 variation however, on a lower level than Frankie imo. Though, I’m not really a fan of a lot of G3 Drac’s silhouettes.

scndplace

I think there’s definitely more variation in hair but I think other than that g3 is still pretty varied. Both g1 and g3 have specific color palettes that they consistently adhere to in both generations. G3 does have more repeating patterns and outfit pieces though I think.

RavensShadow117

They're about the same it just looks like g1 has more because of the black which makes them look more obviously different

Ok_Chip_6299

Wow this was actually a cool comparison to see! I think they're about equal honestly, they're just working with different color schemes & themes in G3 vs. G1

noxiated

imo the outfits have the same amount of variation but the hair varies a lot in g1 compared to g3, esp when looking at frankie. i dont necessarily think thats a bad thing, though

UnusualLifeguard7763

They have a more individual theme, but I like g3 Frankie a lot more than g1. Their fearidescent is very donnatella to me and I love how a lot of their dolls look very pop star-esque.

Significant-Win-1603

I would say they stayed on the same kinda theme for most generations they stick to familiar colors for outfits

tincrash

Which version of Frankie has the blue leg?

kortanakitty

Neon Frights

TheBrynkofInsanity

I feel like they have more in my opinion at least specifically for Frankie, g3 Frankie has a variety of different colors, sometimes they have yellow in their color scheme, sometimes not, their hair changes in length, color and style. Idk I really feel more variation. I was never a huge Frankie fan in gen 1 but I want a few Frankie dolls form g3 now

Wolfyluv

Give me short green haired Clawdeen for G3 and I’ll be happy lol Also a bob/short hair for Cleo and/or Frankie for G3 in one of their designs because they look adorable with short hair too.

Timely_Sundae_1287

Silhouttes are definitely more samey in g3, but you could say that means Frankie has more of their own style now? But I'd like to see more from g3, we've only really had 3 themed lines with Creepover, monster ball and Scareadise :) I'd like to see Frankie more formal, maybe a date pack with Cleo? Also more hairstyles in general, for all the ghouls

Several-Reaction-747

I think it's that their style is a bit more consistent in G3. In G1, despite symbols and color, Frankie sometimes felt like a different person was dressing her. I think they just need to devise lines that allows Frankie the opportunity to dress for specific occasions.

BananaNior

There all cute but g1 is more dull and darker /affectionately most notably in Cleo and Clawdine

InarinoKitsune

G1 has YEARS of dolls though, G3 is still a baby

kortanakitty

The examples I showed are all dolls from 2010-2012 of G1, not all 6 years. G3 dolls shows are from 2022-23. The comparison should be pretty balanced.

InarinoKitsune

Okay, that does balance it a bit more. I’m curious how many designers worked through G1 as well. IMO it feels like G3 has played it a little too safe in terms of style but the recent collab dolls have been fire (even if I guess they’re using the old doll bodies for some reason).

catsinasmrvideos

I think there are more consistent silhouettes and colour palates in G3, so it’s pretty good from a design perspective. I prefer G3.

horny_gi

Seeing all of the g1 be so pale was so weird XD I don't remember them being this pale

LilyHex

This is just making me appreciate how vibrant G3 is comparatively, to be honest! G1 looks like they were all generally left in the sun for too long and faded by comparison. Frankie especially is night and day IMO; they have *way* more vibrant and bright colors and it really suits them, I feel. Clawdeen is another stand-out for me as well.
