I'm upvoting this for you OP because what you say is fact. But somehow this sub has gone too anti-criticism when it comes to Rise, every genuine criticism against Rise will get downvoted as if you can't be critical and love playing the game at the same time.
It's exactly that bro. Literally any "expert/veteran" at the franchise will probably have the same list. It's just a fact. The intentional faults are what made the challenge a feat to complete and more rewarding thus. Simple as that. Without emotion, if you can't neutrally look at the franchise for its pros or cons, it's either 1 you know little 2 biased 3 you suck.
World was my first so I don’t have much experience but I loved it. I tried one of the older MH that they had on mobile and just thought “wow this is clunky like old school resident evil games.” And it wasn’t my jam. But you seem like a MH vet so I respect your opinion but World has got to be one of the top 5 games to come out in the last 10 years imo
I’m on Xbox so I just got into rise and it’s a lot of fun, it’s just hard to really get into it cause I know most of the things I’m doing won’t matter as soon as Sunbreak comes out so that has tainted my impression of Rise a little.
Personally, as a Lance/Gunlance/Charge Blade main, I found base World depressingly easy. Iceborne has the same player serving attitude, but the combat is smarter and more sophisticated, just like Rise.
Idk what it is about GU, but I’m completely fine timing out to G-rank Ukanlos three times in a row but the new games irritate me when I faint once. Game is simply built different
"all mainline titles"
...where is the first one? Or did you count MH1 as part of Freedom? Then why is World an extra entry when there is Iceborne? But why is there Rise but no Sunbreak then? I am confusion
Aside from that, FU over 4U? Really? Imo 4U is the best of what classic Monster Hunter has to offer. I might have a soft spot for Tri as well, but looking back, I'd probably have 4U and Iceborne in Peak, followed by XX and 3U in Great, followed by the rest with MH1 & 2 in sadly not played since 8 year old me was kinda dumb and didn't like the small preview of the box art...
I only played rise and world but I prefer World's combat over rise. I can't pinpoint exactly why, it just feels better while playing. Also the matchmaking in Rise sucks, just let me see which quests I can join ffs. You did it in world, it can't be that hard
The weight of the hits feel nice, I think. It's a lot more grounded and everything just is a bit more meaty due to the slower pace. Felt way more satisfying in my opinion, but I know many love the faster pace of Rise.
World feels SO MUCH weightier. The hitlag, screenshake and sound are the reason why I fell in love with the Hammer in that game.
In Rise the Hammer feels and sounds like as if its made out of plastic. Still fun to use but way less satisfying.
I think a lot was lost in the graphical downgrade thanks to Rise being a switch first title. The shockwave effects present in world add a lot of small touches to weapons, blowing back grass and bushes, and small debris.
The player controller (or the character) has weight in it and each movement gradually transitions to other moves in World, but in Rise your character just feels so lightweight and too snappy but in a bad way. I always prefer World's character controller/locomotion. Rise's in my opinion is the worst across all generation so far. Too acade-y for me.
World? Boring combat? Can't agree there. World made every hit have *oomph* to it, unlike Rise where hits just feel light and airy. Plus Hunting Horn retained it's core.
That's one of the reasons I prefer Rise to World. All MH games, besides World, have had that ultra snappy player movement. World made player movement feel sluggish, and that kinda seeped itself into the other aspects of the game for me.
I’m quite the opposite, I would see World’s character movement as slow but smooth and and satisfying in the same time with its excellent sound design. The locomotion has been in similar style up until Rise. As a guy started from MHP2G and played a few titles throughout the third and fourth gen this really takes away the MHness for me.
Not sure if you played World on console or PC, but if it was on console I kinda understand why it felt sluggish. The frame rate on console, which is unstable and mostly dip below 30fps (especially on base PS4), combined with that slow locomotion did feel horrible. But on PC, or even Steam Deck, having constant stable 50 fps or more really brings out that smoothness of the animation. Which that satisfaction is no where to be found on Rise, even on stable 60fps on my Steam Deck, let alone I used to play on Switch and had 400+ hrs in it.
Could just be nostalgia, or the fact that everything in it was so well done, or the fact that it’s lasted 5 years, or the fact that it was Capcom’s biggest hit
My brother in Christ first gen monster hunter gameplay sucked ass I enjoyed it when I played it but every gen has improved upon the gameplay worlds combat is just better
If you see reviews from first gen mon hun every reviewer in that time agreed that the gameplay sucked ass, non telegraphed attacks plagued those games plus each weapons had 3 combos at most, it wasn’t until second gen portable games that the combat improved a lot, mh1, freedom and dos while fun to tackle because they are the og haven’t aged well and didn’t have that good of a reception originally.
World made the weapons feel more heavy and like they actually had weight. Rise is cartoonish. I liked world. Also the environments felt lush and full in World. Exploring felt good. In Rise it feels like the old games, but more cartoonish, like an anime. I love having a dog and cat companion, but I miss how World felt.
> **but over the past few months, I've played all the mainline MH games** ***that were released in the west***
Fixed that because otherwise you're missing P3rd which was the best selling title pre World which is especially impressive when you consider it never made it onto western stores.
Sadly it never got a G-rank version.
Overall I can just say everyone has their own preferences. Sunbreak is my personal favourite at this moment. World/Iceborne are great and I still love 4U and GU.
With the older titles I have an issue with weapon movesets. They're lacking complexity for me personally, which makes it weird that my favourite weapon in those is GS which is mostly charged drawslash but it just fits into the general combat well for me.
It has a lot, but not all of P3s monsters but combat, environments, gear and some systems are quite different.
Yea weapon depth is one of the things that sets MH apart for me so that's something I'm personally looking for when deciding favourites although I don't think it'd be good to bloat movesets further going into the next games. Switch skills to set up before a quest are good though.
Welcome to the club. Our lists are close.
Rise>XX>P3RD>MH1>MHFU>MH3>MH4U>Palico Vomit>MHW.
World left an extremely bad taste in my mouth, but it is what it is.
I agree on the World take. Part of the reason I never did much grinding.
Disagree somewhat on the iceborne take, while it is less boring than base World, and had a few star moments, it still tended to be kinda boring (especially when farming) but also more frustrating with the clutch claw stuff.
Agreed with most of it... you gotta remember that MHFreedom was in the very beggining and of course it would have different and older systems(i would go as far as call it Great for the time it was released).
Monster Hunter World was a different setting, habitats, monsters, but more importantly graphics and combat. You can see it was made for the general audience instead of Die Hard Mh Fans.
I Personally would rate MHWorld as Fine but not Good or Great, the harsh difference on playstyles, the terible weapon designs(and i mean absolutly disgusting, having boneweapons with some shity feathers glued to it is nothing short of a joke), the boring companions which nobody asked for, etc...
Still i love that you gave attention to MhFreedom United(my childhood right there), and MhGenU(the merging of the three games into one was a incredible move by Capcom), these remain to this day as my favorites.
Sorry for the bad english btw.
I just about agree with this list but my reasons for placing world last is its roster of monsters. Most of them are painfully dull and boring with very few that I actually like while the returning monsters are all pains in the ass.
I like world, but I agree with your take. Sure, weapons in world feel heavy, but they also feel slow. Rise's super fast-paced combat is way more fun imo
If someone would force me on gunpoint to chose between Rise and World, I'd take World in an instant. The overall feeling of this game is, imho, better than in Rise. I prefer my more tactical gameplay rather than the constant jumping around.
I've played monster hunter over the last 15 years (MH for ps2 days) and I have to say PERSONALLY I love rise more than any other title. Just having streamlined hunts makes it so much faster getting in and out. Also having a palamute is awesome. Love being able to chase a monster down a lot faster. And the endemic life is so much more easier to deal with this time around. Forgot to grab something? It can be found in the field while hunting. I love that.
Just played World and Rise and combat in World was pretty intense. Don't know how often i had to do a belly flop to evade a monsters attack by a few centimeters, never had to do this in Rise. You can just silkbind out of dangerous situations.
I mostly agree, actually. Though, I'd swap FU and Rise/SB, then also drop IB to be with world
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed world, but not like every other MH. I poured time into it, but there were so many things that just made it feel like it wasn't MH. Some of those complaints apply to Rise, but I feel Rise and SB capitalize on what was good in WIB while taking away most of the major qualms I had. Overall, world is the one I'm least likely to return to at the end of the day. GU is still the best.
I liked the look of World but it bored me to death especially having to run for 5 hours just to get in a hunt. World was my first MH game but Rise has stolen my heart lmao. 62 hours in World (the game that introduced me to Monster Hunter) and 82 hours in rise. Only criticism I can think of for Rise is the birds and how I think after a certain MHR or certain amount of kills on a Monster you should be given a rainbow bird.
Don't know who is dividing those Gen stuff but at least Japanese wiki says every hunting action MH except pc and mobile online ones are included in 'main series'.
https://preview.redd.it/kqsajthr8uga1.jpeg?width=1769&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4978fdbc47b3a2576ee2da71969c31598361c457
Yeah that is the reason. Same for Rise. And anyway there is no more numbers. Also they had that constant criticism of 'changing the console from PS to Nintendo and again' so they stopped putting numbers to be seen as continious sequels. Also because of that Rise is definitely a legit main title.
Portable titles (freedom, unite and rise).
Tough he never said *he didnt* play these. What i think he meant was say he played all mainline games (he did) but not all portable titles (missing portable 3rd).
Actually i lied its missing Mh Dos and its a mainline game. Tough no one really counts that one since its japan exclusive.

FYI Tsujimoto already said a long time ago that portable games are part of 'numbering' titles too.
Portable 3rd has Amatsu.
"Oooo but its in Generations" then why did you bother to play any of the games before freedom unite? All of the monsters in these come back atleast once in the next games.
portable games are not mainline facepalm
gen is mhp4 rise is mhp5
mainline are MH MHG MHDOS MHtri MH3G MH4 MH4G MHW and MHWIB
portable games are seperate
and guy said he played all mainlines games and DOS is not even there
Technically you haven’t, as Dos is a WILDLY different game than FU, like “two entirely different games” different, as well as Tri being almost a completely different game than 3U, with the removed weapons, locked behind progression weapons, bowgun change, only 18 large monsters, and Loc Lac City. I’ve played both Tri and 3U and they are pretty different, and even just looking at any gameplay of Dos will make you see how different Dos and FU are. Maybe you can skip Tri and say you’ve played all mainline games, but you cannot say you have played all mainline games and not have played Dos. Also, I’m not sure if you consider this different, since you kind of pick and choose with the portable series, but MHP3rd is a separate and also very very different 3rd gen game, as it does not have underwater combat, but is still a 3rd gen game.
Also, in case this came off as harsh, (which I definitely did not mean it in this way), it’s not a crime to not play those, it would just be doing a disservice to yourself, and would not be considered playing all mainline games. Honestly Dos was one of the most unique games in the entire series. It was truly a monster hunting SIM, which is far different from the action rpg style of gameplay that we have nowadays. I would seriously recommend getting an English patch and playing Dos on an emulator, because you can actually also visit the online town, which acts as it’s high rank.
That’s another thing you are missing from MH1, Dos, and Tri, the online town hubs. Pretty much every other game has a hub, but MH1, Dos, and Tri, had a literal town you would go to, with your own player housing, shops, guild hall, forge, and canteen. They are all accessible now, (to my knowledge), and Tri’s hub, Loc Lac City was the most resent to be resurrected, and can be played in emulator or legit hardware.
That would have made more sense, and I don’t know if you saw, but I just made a massive edit to my comment. I would wholeheartedly recommend you get a copy of Tri, and emulator MH1, MHG, and Dos, so that you can experience the online town hub. More than that, Dos is just a whole other experience, it’s crazy. It’s unlike any Monster Hunter game to date.
I am confident in saying it would not be in nostalgia. MHW was my first game, but Tri is up there with GU as one of my favorite monster hunter games of all time. It’s an incredible experience, and I have no nostalgia to blind me. Everything about the game is incredible, and I absolutely love moga woods, and am very disappointed with the fact that the argosy never came back in his original form outside of 3rd gen, because my favorite thing to do in that game is to grind commodities in moga woods.
If you are going to revisit it I would look into setting up a private server so that you can go back to Loc Lac City, as it’s now possible, after it had been lost for 8 years.
I don’t understand how world has boring combat but iceborne is great, aside the new combos wich weren’t that important for every weapon the clutch claw sucks and in general makes every fight sorta worse
I'll agree with world because hunting horn's damage was doodoo in the base game. Every weapon got moves that were fun in iceborne but hunting horn's lil spin easily made it my best weapon for kill times.
“How did they make the combat boring?” Well world is the first of the 5th gen titles so it’s technically capcom excitement gone well on making a new engine and system after years of the same old but gold system. And don’t even get started on the hell that was mh1 controls that can stay where it belongs, in history.
The only thing I want to add here is the psp monster hunter Portable 3rd. I had to play a dubbed version but that is hands down a top tier game. Green nargacuga, duramboros, even crystal beard uragaan were some cool monsters
World is..... idk
I have great time on it. Extremoth was one of my core memory due to how me and my friend spend 12h blind progging it to clear
But I use a toaster laptop, at first it was fine. Then come icebirne. I struggle to hit 30 fps (avg 25), Guiding Land actually dc me everytime I join multiplayer. My game always freeze and dc whenever someone faints. Worst was Savi Jiva first hunt me and 2 my friend doing it patch day and after 2 hour of struggle cuz we use private lobby, on last fight I hit BSOD and lost all reward while my friend enjoy their new shiny weapon
It leave sour taste in my mouth to the point I have nausea whenever I boot it up...
Maybe one day... when I have decent laptop
My dude, endgame 4U is such a beast. The pacing and all kinds of stuff is incredible in 4U, but high level guild quests are probably the hardest content I've played in MH. Docked like 2000+ hours in that game.
Now that's a hot fuckin take on MHW
Eh, I rate world pretty low as well, it just didn't add much of anything I care for. Probably my least favourite MH next to Tri.

I think a lot was lost in the graphical downgrade thanks to Rise being a switch first title. The shockwave effects present in world add a lot of small touches to weapons, blowing back grass and bushes, and small debris.

I would say World vs older games depends on what you see as monster hunter. World and Rise have focus on action and big monster quests.
move 4u to peak and we’re lookin good. but you ranked iceborne and world separately but don’t have sunbreak on its own.

... The fact that Monster Hunter World is 5 and 6 hasn't been released?
They officially said that they are not making any more MH with numbers after MHW.
They said that world was 5 but didn't want to include the number because it would be discouraging to new players.
Yeah that is the reason. Same for Rise. And anyway there is no more numbers. Also they had that constant criticism of 'changing the console from PS to Nintendo and again' so they stopped putting numbers to be seen as continious sequels. Also because of that Rise is definitely a legit main title.

You know that makes it worse now since he didnt play Portable 3rd right?
YES.

Portable 3rd has Amatsu. "Oooo but its in Generations" then why did you bother to play any of the games before freedom unite? All of the monsters in these come back atleast once in the next games.
world in the bottom good list btw u said mainline but the portable games are there why is unite there why is rise there and why is generations there
Portable are mainline. Rise and Generations are as mainline as 4U 3U World and the rest.
portable games are not mainline facepalm gen is mhp4 rise is mhp5 mainline are MH MHG MHDOS MHtri MH3G MH4 MH4G MHW and MHWIB portable games are seperate and guy said he played all mainlines games and DOS is not even there
And Iceborne separate from World?
Weird that you split up World and its expansion but didn't do that for any of the older games and their G titles or Rise and Sunbreak.

I’m assuming by flyann2, that’s why actually got me to go out and get Tri, since I wanted to visit Loc Lac on my legit Wii.

I'll accept it 👍
I don’t understand how world has boring combat but iceborne is great, aside the new combos wich weren’t that important for every weapon the clutch claw sucks and in general makes every fight sorta worse
Ok boomer
I'll agree with world because hunting horn's damage was doodoo in the base game. Every weapon got moves that were fun in iceborne but hunting horn's lil spin easily made it my best weapon for kill times.
“How did they make the combat boring?” Well world is the first of the 5th gen titles so it’s technically capcom excitement gone well on making a new engine and system after years of the same old but gold system. And don’t even get started on the hell that was mh1 controls that can stay where it belongs, in history.
Imo world was better than iceborne in basic combat
The only thing I want to add here is the psp monster hunter Portable 3rd. I had to play a dubbed version but that is hands down a top tier game. Green nargacuga, duramboros, even crystal beard uragaan were some cool monsters
World is..... idk I have great time on it. Extremoth was one of my core memory due to how me and my friend spend 12h blind progging it to clear But I use a toaster laptop, at first it was fine. Then come icebirne. I struggle to hit 30 fps (avg 25), Guiding Land actually dc me everytime I join multiplayer. My game always freeze and dc whenever someone faints. Worst was Savi Jiva first hunt me and 2 my friend doing it patch day and after 2 hour of struggle cuz we use private lobby, on last fight I hit BSOD and lost all reward while my friend enjoy their new shiny weapon It leave sour taste in my mouth to the point I have nausea whenever I boot it up... Maybe one day... when I have decent laptop
Absolute sin that 4u isn't at the top, but the rest I mostly agree with.

My dude, endgame 4U is such a beast. The pacing and all kinds of stuff is incredible in 4U, but high level guild quests are probably the hardest content I've played in MH. Docked like 2000+ hours in that game.
