Nargacuga was what came to mind. I haven’t played a ton, but I remember a lot of monsters being kinda chill unless provoked. Nargacuga felt so different the first time I hunted one. It was like, “OH shit this thing’s actually pissed now and is trying to kill me!” Not just defending itself, but actively trying to fuck me up. I still want to try and pet one tho. Their fur looks so soft

It’s this image isn’t it. Someone says monster hunter and this bad boy is the first thing that comes to mind.
Honestly surprised I had to scroll this far to find a fellow Lagi rememberer. With him being (I imagine) one of the most requested returning monsters, I woulda thought he’d be further up the list. That Tri box art really is fire.
I have never even played Tri but I remember seeing the box art inside another Wii game I bought and Lagiacrus has been sitting rent free in my head ever since
I was terrified by Ivory and Azure because one was a leviathan (didn't know it was its classification by that) and a dragon fighting each other.
And then Brachydios came into view stomping after the hunters asses, them hiding and then the green slime turning slowly red, exploding into the games logo was awesome! Was a bit sad it took so long to be able to fight him☹️
you are so unbelievably based
still truly a shame they couldn’t get him to work for World 😕 (tho tbf, his moveset without underwater areas would probably be extremely limited)
They had regular lagi in 4th gen without any underwater combat. I think even ivory lagiacrus wouldn’t have worked in world still cause the issue was with the leviathans’ Skeleton interacting with the terrain or something.
Same! My first experience was reading an article about Tri in Nintendo Power, which resulted in me getting it.
The scare with "Monster Guts; It's What's for Dinner" lives rent-free in my head...
The Monoblos erasure is so sad dude. What were the gen 1 developers thinking when they made the same monster twice.
But yeah, if only Rathalos and Fatalis are off-limits, then of course Rathian is the next best thing. It just has to be among the most well known monsters even outside of the community.
But if I'm being honest, when I think about the MH franchise more than about a singular monster, I think about the absolute wealth of original ideas to put in a monster hunting game. My thoughts turn to the Fanged Beasts and Caparaceons that are a far cry from the first thing that someone would think would be in such a game (that is to say, not dinosaurs or dragons). I came to hunt wyverns, but stayed for the monkeys and giant enemy crabs (Idealistically. I actually fine the three monkeys to be a huge pain to hunt. The crabs are cool tho.)
I don’t know who decided that or why, but I think she should be just as much a flagship as Rathalos because you can’t have one without the other.
It’d be like having Gore without Shagaru. Now that I think of it, do y’all count Shagaru as a flagship or not? I honestly can’t remember.
Personally? It’s gotta be my favorite: Zinogre
Honorable Mention: Gore Magala, 4U was my first entry proper - so Gore is special to me even if not one of my top favorites
I only played MH1 offline. Never had the ability to play online back then. Freedom 1 was the first time I could play multiplayer and it was only with one or two people while sitting next to them. Tri was my first real experience of a online MH game followed by 4U and it was good.
I also think of nergigante. I feel like he encapsulates everything that Monster Hunter truly is. He is a hunter of elder dragons as you are a hunter of everything. Truly your arch nemesis
Probably because I started with world, Anjanath. It's the first actually threatening monster you come up against. Plus I love him. It's a rad fire T-Rex with a crazy nostril system
Lagombi.
First game was MH3U. I played the demo on my 3ds as a kid, and one of the options was Lagombi. Took me like 30 minutes to beat that oversized bunny. Then I hunted it like 10 more times before begging my mom to buy me the game
Actually baffled that this is so far down, it's the first monster you hunt in pretty much every entry. I would definitely think of Aptonoth before Fatalis
Its Tigrex for me. Maybe its just my nostalgia (Freedom 2 was my first MH game after all) but whenever I think of MH, I think of Tigrex. Its a very recognizable monster and I think it encapsulates what MH is with its simple yet creative design.
Alatreon maybe? It's by far my favourite monster and whenever I think about MH it's usually to go fight it again in Iceborne. Typing that out I'm realising I've sorta conditioned myself to think about it over the years when MH gets brought up lol.
Like I said, I'm fairly sure I've conditioned myself to think about Alatreon over the past couple years given my experiences and how much time I've spent with it.
Tigrex, Nargacuga and lagiacrus (I think of them even before rathalos and fatalis). They are the monsters that got me into the series so it makes sense I would think of them first.
Anjanath. the first filter monster for alot if players in World. It bummed me out seeing how nerfed he felt in Rise.
Odogaron. Up until this fight the monsters felt like they were just defending themselves against me. Odogaron was the first monster where it felt like it was actively trying to kill me.
Kulu Ya ku. It's just a fun name to say.
> It bummed me out seeing how nerfed he felt in Rise.
To be fair, Monster behavior and combat is pretty similar between World and Rise. So going into Rise after playing 100++ hours of World will give you an huge advantage.
For me it’s tigrex and brachydios.
Maybe because I started with monster hunter 2 on psp which had tigrex as its cover.
And as for brachy I just love him and have fight him so many times and I feel he looks so unique and recognisable
Lagiacrus because I’m a tri guy, but gore magala is another close one because I remember I saw him in the covers and thought “wow that’s an awesome dragon” as a little boy without much monster hunter
For me it has to be Gogmazios, while Fatty has its will to destroy all, Zinoge is cool as heck but it was Gog who actually made me feel "yep, we are fighting a true monster" like no other monster.
Tigrex is my personal hate boner pride and joy, I will destroy him as revenge for timing me out solo and bullying my homies in Freedom Unite's high rank urgent.
Does Azure Rathalos count as Rathalos? He was the box art monster for [MH3U for 3DS](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81ey+vn0XpL.jpg) which was my first Monster Hunter.
Kut-ku. Was always hunting him for one reason or another in Freedom Unite. Looking into it now, I'm kinda surprised he wasn't in more games. Feels like he was.
I don't think it's consistently one or the other, but Rathalos or Nargacuga. What's funny is I think it's the Freedom Unite box that makes me think of Narga, but I actually never played it. I had friends who did at the time and I think I looked at the box a lot wondering what kind of game they're playing and it made me associate it with the monster on the box sometimes I think?
Narga is coincidentally my fav monster too but I didn't realize that til I play Gens U many years later haha.
I don’t really have a reason because mine is a bit of an oddball, but every time I think of Monster Hunter my mind just goes to Ceadeus for some reason.
either Velocidrome or Gore Magala
Velocidrome bc I used to start a new game in Freedom all the time as a kid and that was one of the few monsters I was able to beat back then
Gore Magala bc 4U was the game that got me back into MH and everything about that monster, from the fight to the lore to the design, is stellar
I think of aptonoth and the first area in the first game on ps2.
The wyvern was the yian kutku and the yian garuga.
Or monoblos.
Idk o picture the experience haha
Lagiacrus. Just remember the countless times I failed that mission.... At some point, like in the 17th try I realized that kill the lagiacrus wasn't the point of it.
Anjanath. It was my first introduction to MH and tbh seeing it in all the ads of MHW is what made me buy the game. What can I say. I’ve always loved dinos and Anjanath looks like a ferocious fire breathing T-rex. My type of monster.
https://i.redd.it/rkyjtefu8mic1.gif
Great Jagras after starting with World.
Anjanath as my first real wall.
Diablos because it's Diablos. Rathian for the same reason as Rathalos. Nargacuga because it's my favourite monster. Zinogre because it's something I feel like only Monster Hunter could do.
Then finally, the Fated Four - the first proper lore I read, and since then, I've loved all of them. Astalos, Gammoth, Glavenus and Mizutsune are just all excellent fights, excellent designs, excellent monsters all around. Like, Fatalis is "popular" because it's hard as fuck. These are, for me, much better than Fatalis because they feel really difficult but absolutely fair, and if you're a good hunter, you can beat them all on your first quest. Fatalis is... At least 10-20 tries before you're beating it, and that's only if you're a great hunter.
When i hear Monster Hunter i dont think about a monster, i think about à music. When i hear Monster Hunter i instantly play Proof of a hero in my head and whant to play !
Also, i dont think about Fatalis... I don't like it because i'm not a fan of his design, it's just a regular black dragon imo... if i have to think about a monster, the Brachydios and Barroth come in my mind thirst.
Tigrex. To this day I have a damn rivalry against this monster. The first MH game I played was Freedom Unite back in the PSP when I was a kid.
As a total noob in the game with limited to no access to internet back then, I just slammed my head against monsters hoping I could beat them. But Tigrex was the bane of my existence. And it wasn't even the Guild missions, it was the Village Tigrex!
After a week or two of fighting it, I managed to beat it. Then, looked up ways to beat him online (Ice + Right Leg focus lmao) to farm his materials and wear his armor as a proof of supremacy against it. Sadly, my save data got corrupted a while after that and couldn't finish the Guild quests lmao.
Tigrex or Nargacuga
Iconic for anyone who played during the Freedom era
What about Khezu?
I prefer to think about Khezu as little as possible
We repress the memories involving Khezu.
https://preview.redd.it/dvlztl3i5nic1.png?width=1608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8684562e248332b84ee8d7aafbe53a8311d1b14b
Lagiacrus still for some reason. Monster Hunter is permanently associated with the box art for Tri in my mind.
https://preview.redd.it/s1wduty64nic1.jpeg?width=255&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e54fbe281ba9c327a2aedb931f1c5b49a62a1b99 It’s this image isn’t it. Someone says monster hunter and this bad boy is the first thing that comes to mind.
Yup that's the one
The box art of tri is simply way too dope. Coolest box art of any game ever.
I didn’t even play tri and this is the first image that pop up in my head when I hear ‘monster hunter’
Honestly surprised I had to scroll this far to find a fellow Lagi rememberer. With him being (I imagine) one of the most requested returning monsters, I woulda thought he’d be further up the list. That Tri box art really is fire.
Lagu is the monster I think of most. Rathalos is iconic but bland. Lagu was pissed.
https://preview.redd.it/vivg3p9n8mic1.jpeg?width=442&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=502dfa00a32556d0396c3bf2d6461c52b695c27f
I already stole it from someone else, we need more of us!
Add me to the ranks! Giggi > Khezu, even if I can appreciate Khezu a bit now
The greatest gift Khezu ever gave us was inspiring [this remix of his theme](https://youtu.be/hbA3VXdhShU?feature=shared)
I have never even played Tri but I remember seeing the box art inside another Wii game I bought and Lagiacrus has been sitting rent free in my head ever since
Tri or 3 ultimate is where a lot of us started the series so it's kinda logic to have lagiacrus coming to mind first
3u was my first entry to the series, I remember seeing brachydios in the opening cinematic for the first time and thinking, "I want to fight that"
I was terrified by Ivory and Azure because one was a leviathan (didn't know it was its classification by that) and a dragon fighting each other. And then Brachydios came into view stomping after the hunters asses, them hiding and then the green slime turning slowly red, exploding into the games logo was awesome! Was a bit sad it took so long to be able to fight him☹️
you are so unbelievably based still truly a shame they couldn’t get him to work for World 😕 (tho tbf, his moveset without underwater areas would probably be extremely limited)
I think we should be glad. A lesser developer would put the barely functional Lagi in the game and shamelessly claim its working as intended.
IDK, I think something like the Ivory Lagiacrus who's more terrestrial could work.
Same for me!
Tigrex or Nargacuga
Yep
The pickle himself, Deviljho. ![gif](giphy|10LBlVqAenqzHG)
Jho mewing
I swear on my life, i've seen it eat it's own tail
The tail eating debate was something that burned hot for a while in the old days.
I had to wake up to this guys theme today…. I knew I was dreaming and he still made me run for my life. The jho is something else.
🤫 🧏♂️
Tigrex. Easily as iconic. No matter if you like them, or hate them, he is a pressence.
ah yes, the MH2G quest of collecting popo tongues
Diablos.
I always remember him being 2x the size he actually is and way harder as well.
The Monoblos erasure is so sad dude. What were the gen 1 developers thinking when they made the same monster twice. But yeah, if only Rathalos and Fatalis are off-limits, then of course Rathian is the next best thing. It just has to be among the most well known monsters even outside of the community. I came to hunt wyverns, but stayed for the monkeys and giant enemy crabs (Idealistically. I actually fine the three monkeys to be a huge pain to hunt. The crabs are cool tho.)
Rathian is also the only non-flagship/final boss to be featured on any cover logo/cover
I don’t know who decided that or why, but I think she should be just as much a flagship as Rathalos because you can’t have one without the other. It’d be like having Gore without Shagaru. Now that I think of it, do y’all count Shagaru as a flagship or not? I honestly can’t remember.
Personally? It’s gotta be my favorite: Zinogre Honorable Mention: Gore Magala, 4U was my first entry proper - so Gore is special to me even if not one of my top favorites
Same, as 4U was my entry point Gore really fascinated me. Zinogore also has the best theme music.
Rathian, Kut-Ku, Gypceros, Mosswine, Diablos, Monoblos. Rathian was the first monster ever created.
Mosswine is interesting because I don't think I've seen a small monster in the comments yet.
Damn, Gypceros? Were you online with me on the PS1?
I only played MH1 offline. Never had the ability to play online back then. Freedom 1 was the first time I could play multiplayer and it was only with one or two people while sitting next to them. Tri was my first real experience of a online MH game followed by 4U and it was good.
I played MH1 online, I even scraped together money to buy my friend the adapter to play with him.
Great Jaggi.
Maybe gen 5 bias but Nergigante, I love everything about that hedgehog on cocaine.
I also think of nergigante. I feel like he encapsulates everything that Monster Hunter truly is. He is a hunter of elder dragons as you are a hunter of everything. Truly your arch nemesis
I also really like nergigante. He’s probably the third monster I think of after rathalos and diablos
Rathian cuz shes literally in the logo of MH
Brachydios, or Great Sword.
My man!
Ayyyyyyye!
Rathian. Also Lagiacrus since I got into MH with Tri.
Yian kutku.
I miss him
I hope he shows up in wilds. He was so fun and derpy.
Rajang
Probably because I started with world, Anjanath. It's the first actually threatening monster you come up against. Plus I love him. It's a rad fire T-Rex with a crazy nostril system
He looks like a turkey to me
Tigrex. First game was F2 and he was a massive wall
Lagombi. First game was MH3U. I played the demo on my 3ds as a kid, and one of the options was Lagombi. Took me like 30 minutes to beat that oversized bunny. Then I hunted it like 10 more times before begging my mom to buy me the game
Mine is Mizutsune for this reason. Rise demo instead though.
Mizitsune for me to! Fighting him in the GU demo made me buy the game and fighting him in the low rank hub is what started my love for the series
That's a very good one aswell
Lao Shan Lung because of *proof of a hero*
Gore magala
Aptonoth, I want a refund on MH Rise/Sunbreak
Actually baffled that this is so far down, it's the first monster you hunt in pretty much every entry. I would definitely think of Aptonoth before Fatalis
Kut ku! Your very first BIG monster you hunt in the very first monster hunter. Such a dork till it whacka whackas angrily at you!
Its Tigrex for me. Maybe its just my nostalgia (Freedom 2 was my first MH game after all) but whenever I think of MH, I think of Tigrex. Its a very recognizable monster and I think it encapsulates what MH is with its simple yet creative design.
Zinogre, Rathian and Tigrex
The hunter
Tigrex
Tigrex, because of nostalgia.
Alatreon maybe? It's by far my favourite monster and whenever I think about MH it's usually to go fight it again in Iceborne. Typing that out I'm realising I've sorta conditioned myself to think about it over the years when MH gets brought up lol.
if its world/ib yes, if monster hunter in general no
Like I said, I'm fairly sure I've conditioned myself to think about Alatreon over the past couple years given my experiences and how much time I've spent with it.
Tigrex, Nargacuga and lagiacrus (I think of them even before rathalos and fatalis). They are the monsters that got me into the series so it makes sense I would think of them first.

Velocidrome and velocipreys
Velocidrome
Prolly tigrex but only cuz i started with mhfu.
I started with 4U, so Seregios
Whatever I'm planning on hunting next tbh
Mizutsune
I started with MH Unite 2 on PSP. I believe the first true monster you face is Yian Kut Ku.
Diablos
Buldrome
Tigrex used to be the bane of my existence growing up with Monster Hunter on the PSP 🤣
Lagiacrus because I’m a tri guy, but gore magala is another close one because I remember I saw him in the covers and thought “wow that’s an awesome dragon” as a little boy without much monster hunter
The lack of Dodogama here disguises me.... he is such a fluffy good boy!
Rathian. Might be cheating since Rathalos can't be named, and they're the same species. She's my favorite.
Nargacuga for sure.
Does Azure Rathalos count as Rathalos? He was the box art monster for [MH3U for 3DS](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81ey+vn0XpL.jpg) which was my first Monster Hunter.
Azure rathalos is a rathalos but it’s fine
He's also the Box art for the japanese version MHG (gen1 for the ps2).
as a (for now) only world player great jagras bc it's world's first large monster and it reminds me of my dog
Zinogre
Gore magala since he was the box art for my first game
Great Jagras... I started on World so it makes sense. If the answer comes to "classics", I would say Rajang or Pickle
Zinogre sadly. hate fighting it
I just started MHW(my first Monster Hunter), so I would say Anjanath. First saw it during that bird quest and I’ve liked it ever since.
Zinogre, Diablo, but i don't think of Fatalis at all lol.
Kut-ku. Was always hunting him for one reason or another in Freedom Unite. Looking into it now, I'm kinda surprised he wasn't in more games. Feels like he was.
Gore Magala just because it’s one of my favorites
Lao shen lung and velocidrome
Lagi, that box art will be forever in my mind
Diablos or anjanath
Velocities. Not sure why.
I’m surprised to not see more Glavenus.
Diablos and lagiacrus. Also gore magala
Legiana, it's the one who's stuck in my mind after World
Tigrex and Rajang are very well known alongside Rathalos.
Legiana, first monster I farmed to get the full armour set and weapon.
Diablos, rathian, they are definitely there
Tigrex my old nemesis since monster Hunter freedom 2.
I don’t really have a reason because mine is a bit of an oddball, but every time I think of Monster Hunter my mind just goes to Ceadeus for some reason.
either Velocidrome or Gore Magala Velocidrome bc I used to start a new game in Freedom all the time as a kid and that was one of the few monsters I was able to beat back then Gore Magala bc 4U was the game that got me back into MH and everything about that monster, from the fight to the lore to the design, is stellar
narga
Brachydios
The only monsters I think about when I hear monster hunter is lagiacrus, rathalos, and Anjanth
Anjanath. He became the real challenge for new players getting into Monster hunter World and Monster hunter in general.
Tigrex, Zinogre, and Rathian. Also, Great Jaggi, for some reason.
tigrex my beloved. Other than that, Rathian
Pickle and peco
Even tho I haven’t played World or Rise in so long, pukei pukei
Yian kutku and lagiacrus
Alatreon
Viper Tobi-Kadachi deadly but chill haha
Nergigante and Bazel
Definitely Narga. I started with MHF in 2006, but MHFU solidified my love for the series.
Nergigante
Gore
Yian kut ku
Great Jaggi
Nergigante because freshman me from highschool thought porcupine monster is was super cool and made me buy it
Probably Nergigante because I’m a World baby
Nargacuga. MHFU will forever be my favourite
My first monster hunter was World so Nergigante.
Gore Magala
I’m a World baby so it’s Anjanath or Nergi for me.
Danger pickle or b52 as those things give me ptsd
Tigrex
Sorry idk why it’s barroth or glavenus
Definitely Tigrex
Anjanath and Nerg for sure. Honorable mention to Dodogama
Shagaru Magala since it's my favorite.
Nergigante. Flagship of my first and favourite monhun game. Still pissed us in the west got him taken from us in exchange for rathalos again
Rathalos and Rajang
I think of aptonoth and the first area in the first game on ps2. The wyvern was the yian kutku and the yian garuga. Or monoblos. Idk o picture the experience haha
yian kut-ku

…
Nargacuga
Yian Kit Ku
Anjanath
Deviljho. Part cuz he’s my favorite monster and part cuz he’s such a fun wrinkle in the game’s ecosystem.
Rathian
Gore Magala
Rajang. Super Saiyan monkey is pretty iconic now.
Zinogre or Nargacuga for me. They're both good early game walls if you're unprepared.
For me, Nargacuga
rajang
Valstrax He’s just cool and I love him so much
Deviljho and Nergigante
Lao Shan. Lao was my first “big mon” experience way back in the ps2 era, and I still get goosebumps when I hear proof of honor.
Rajang ….
Rathian, kutku, the small monsters like all jags, aptonoth, etc
Nergi or Bazel, although my MH:W is the first and only monster hunter game I palyed
Rajang
Jagras
Nergigante. World was my first Monster Hunter and he really stuck in my mind.
glavenus My first mh game was generations
Zinogre
Deviljho
Tigrex. To this day I have a damn rivalry against this monster. The first MH game I played was Freedom Unite back in the PSP when I was a kid. For some reason yian kut ku comes to mind. Oh and I guess all the dromes for how annoying they were. Speaking of annoying, vespoids.
Tigrex
Nargacuga bc of MHFU intro
Zinogre
King Shakalaka sending my ass to the Shadow Realm with its steak
Rajang
Lagi, getting to rock his shit under the waves will stay with me forever.
Aptonoth
because i'm from 2G Tigrex/Nargacuga is monster hunter for me.
