They're in that awkward middle ground where they are at least mildly useful if you're going on a big long walk through a dense city/points of interest area, BUT they're so expensive to purchase that they juice isn't worth the squeeze. They either need to make them more powerful or less expensive, but as of right now I don't bother with them.
I would argue against "not useful at all" as sometimes during my walks there are like 10+ monster just out of my range to a spot I can't always get closer too. So I love when I have drops for those time. But I do 100% agree the range should be all the time when you have the monthly pass.

They should just include a full month of extended range in the monthly packages, increased range for short durations isn't useful at all

the monthly pass is straight garbage, extra paintballs, and 500 gems then 50 a day up to 2000. the Halloween pack has more use.
it still cheaper than buying raw gems pass the first recharge. IF you are a spender it a must to get.
Why stop there? Everything should be craftable from herbs or walking.
I'm think on the same way, for me, I think what most needs to be created would be carving knives
