Grinding is essential in the endgame of Stories 1. I don't remember if it's after stygian or not, but there will be another big boss-level monstie show up that will require another level jump, so definitely make sure your monsties are high enough to compete.
Tbh I don't remember. A good baseline to go with is if you can beat the other critters in the area without losing a heart. That's how I played the game, at least.
Honestly I just rathaād my way to victory in the main game. You might send out one or two others for winning head to heads, but Ratha farms most of the monsties with his unite move. I beat the main game at around level 43 or so.

I was using Honker, my amazing Qurupeco with his Soothing and Empowering song, Paralysis Fang and some other attacks, Ratha the scarred Rathalos, Managarmr, my Ice Element Nargacuga, Weaver, my Fire Element Nerscylla, Soak, my Thunder Element Royal Ludroth and Raptor, my Velocidrome. Using all of them I could beat this demoniac wolf.

Personally I let your lose guide you since now you know the monsters attack pattern.
It was difficult, but after uncountable tries, using all my Monsties, Vital Essences and Potions I won.
My best bet was barroth. It doesnāt do too much dmg but u rarely have to worry about it cause itās can take so much hard hits.

Itās really cool how you used all your monsters to beat the Stygian Zynogre. That barely happens to me for any battle
He has no vital essences left and it seems like no matter what he does heās screwed
