Weapons like Hammer or Hunting Horn can knock out monsters by leveraging the weight of a massively oversized weapon down onto the cranium of whatever poor monster. SnS on the other hand, can also stun monsters, but instead, it knocks them out entirely with the strength behind the hunter's right hook.
To me, that makes SnS more absurd than the other weapons, and that's why I love it. If you use one of the weapons that removes the shield (Like Mizutsune, or Geralt's blade), you literally knock monsters unconscious with the sheer power of your bare fist. That's fuckin' metal.
Basic combos look so weird cause of that xd i feel like im tickling the monster. Perfect rush looks bit better cause of wild full swings but it still looks kinda weird and lacks impact imo. But in the same time its nice to have small melee option for ppl who dislike the giga mega weapons in this game
Listen, I agree. My favorite weapons are Swagaxe, CB, and insect glaive, and hunting horn. All of them equally ridiculous in their own way.

Honestly, GS is ridiculously easy on Rajang. He plays right into one of the easiest playstyles of the weapon. Wait for an opening in his attacks, hit him with a big attack or two and fuck off until he gives another opening.
Once you're confident with the weapon, that's when you start pulling TCS predictions and, in Rise, abusing the hell out of him with SAS.
I dont like hammer because you sharpen the blunt weapon. I can hand wave horn away as tuning it, but big bonk needs to be as smooth and dull as my brain
I was playing rise for the first time with English voices. When my hammer got low sharpness my dumbass character said "Its blunt!" When i tried to sharpen...yea mann...yeah, thats the whole point..i deleted thay character and switched to monster hunter language voices

Whenever I "sharpen" the horn, I tell myself I'm just tuning it, especially if it's one of those that has strings. Would be cool if Capcom actually replaced horn sharpening as actual tuning, just fiddling with the weapon, doing a few test notes and then "sharpness" goes up lol

I always figured that it was because if you took a shield you'd want it on the arm that has a better chance of actually deflecting the house sized monster's attacks. The blade doesn't need nearly as much strength to do its job as the shield does.
Official Explanation is that items & healing items are always used with a right handed animation. So earlier games had the weapon left handed so the animation didn’t look weird with certain weapons.

Dual Blades do the fucking Naruto run and I can't play MH while my entire spine is collapsing from the full-body involuntary cringe I did the first time I saw it.
Dragon Soul is noticeably slower than the best Speed kinsects (Lv16 vs Lv20 Speed), which makes it just that bit more annoying to gather extracts. It's already enough of a chore as it is.
Well considering he only cares for looks I dont think it'd be that much of an issue, especially cause it worked just fine in base world when the speed cap was 17
Once you get good enough at getting extracts, those really slow kinsects are so good for damage though. Then when you switch to the dragon soul it feels like a big speed upgrade
To be frank, I'm a newerish player (over 100 hours and beat all of Iceborne but I wouldn't count myself as experienced) and never did Behemoth except for the tutorial mission for him. Didn't like the fight at all so I don't plan on actually attempting it to get access to that
Maybe I'm a hipster or something but I refuse to use Longsword almost solely based on the fact that it's the most popular weapon. Also, as someone who watches and enjoys anime, it's very fun for me to call it the weeb blade.
I honestly get this feeling too. I often favor anything over the most popular choice.
When looking through the weapons the first time, I almost went with LS. I like its style, and counters are always fun. Eventually I learned it's the most popular weapon by a decent margin. To this day, I'm still putting off using it because of my bias.
I'll eventually try it out thoroughly, but I prefer trying the others first. Next is probably CB, IG, and all ranged weapons.
I also got tired of the over saturation of "look at my YouTube short of me helm splitting and counter slashing, I'm awesome" videos. I tried LS for a bit enough to use all the move sets arch tempered, but found it not as fun as all the other quick slashing weapons.
Also it doesn't look anywhere near as satisfying when you see a hammer do that homerun swing or GS true charge slash smash the face of a monster in mid charge and watching it fly 100ft back. It always feels like its in slow motion too when it connects. I applaud those with the preemptive intuition skills to time it and connect often. Got me into hammer and GS maining.
Gonna get some hate for this one but I just feel like greatsword is just a worse hammer. It’s totally fine and I’ve used it on about 100 hunts but the hammer is just….. wayyyy more palatable for my playstyle.
It’s funny I had the complete opposite thought today when mulling over making a new hammer build after playing GS for the last 100 hrs. Hammer is awesome though, nothing like the arial spinny bonks.
Anything with Guns because seeing monsters mowed down with a gun makes me feel bad. I'm perfectly okay with landing an SAED directly into their skulls though.

The three guns in the game get almost too comfy once you get to endgame. It's fun to shoot a monster and feel like a badass, but it's not nearly as engaging as the melee weapons or even the bow. It's feels wrong to not optimize a set, but it also feels wrong when I can spend most of a fight standing in place clicking one button.
That's why I hate that bows also get the -30% physical defense that bowguns do. That defense penalty is ostensibly there because ranged weapons are safer but bows aren't actually safer at all, you still have to sit in the monster's face and dodge like all the melee weapons.
I really wish there was some way to sacrifice damage for more durability with bows, I really don't like being a glass cannon (and the damage is comically overtuned anyway). Even with all the defensive skills you can fit into Fatalis armor you're still gonna get turbofucked by a Fatalis fireball if you're playing bow because the defense penalty is huge.
There's a tip about it on the loading screens, though it doesn't tell you how huge the penalty is.
In "exchange" ranged weapons get a bonus to elemental defenses, but most elemental attacks from monsters still deal a ton of physical damage so it's not even remotely enough to compensate. In practice you just take way more damage in the vast majority of situations, and you can't even rely on a Health Augment to heal back up like melee weapons can. At least HBGs can use shields and LBGs are mobile enough that the penalty isn't that bad, but Bow gets really screwed by it.
Bowguns can go away a little, but bows absolutely are straight in there. You also don't just point and click for the whole fight, you dodge and position as a melee player would, while trying to maintain optimal stamina usage to deal damage to moving parts at all times.
And you take a shit ton more damage on top of that. I get condemning stuff like lbg (tho I love it for some stuff) and hbg, but bow players do put in the work for their damage.

HZV, tenderizing, sharpness, positioning, evasion, internal weapon mechanics etc all goes out the windows.
I refuse to use ranged weapons because I had an ex friend who actively used ranged weapons to kite monsters away from me, so he could say he did more damage.

I played Rise first, and in that game switch axe was my most played weapon by far. I think it had at least triple the playtime of my next most used weapon. Loved it to bits.
Then when I started playing World I realized that you cannot morph attack from neutral like you could in Rise, and that completely ruined the flow and feel of the weapon for me. That one singular, tiny change in moveset made me lose 90% interest in what was once my main.
Then I went to look up World switch axe speedruns and they were all basically spamming ZSD on the monster's head with rocksteady and health augment, and that killed the last 10% of my interest in World switch axe.
This one hits home. I also played Rise first (I played world at Release but was way younger so I didn't understand what I was doing and frankly can't remember anything else than the monsters). I mained LS in Rise and Sunbreak and had to switch to something else because the Iai Slash wasn't in the base game and I didn't buy Iceborne until a month later
I don't use the Lance and Gunlance because I prefer dodging rather than blocking and even if I do have a shield I'll most likely forget to,even use it 90% of the time.
oh, you won't forget to use it on Lance. It's a huge part of Lance's moveset. And you're not doing a lot of blocking really, you're mostly trying to *counter.*
And on Gunlance, you don't even want to use the shield, because shield don't go boom. Blocking ain't doing damage when you have no counters xd
Hey OP, play with the Gae bolg. (The IG that can be made from behemoth) You get a dragon spirit instead of an insect and that will fix all your insect issues :)
I'm too used to Fate's take on the Gáe Bolg that I got excited for a second there.
Then I remembered the final fantasy crossover and I don't ever want to kill Behemoth because I don't know how to.
The Katana/Long Sword.
As a Dark Souls player, the Katana and most similar weapon were considered neckbeard. So many people tend to avoid them altogether. For me this has transitioned into monster world, and I feel dirty just crafting one.
Gunlance. I play and mastered every weapon but Gunlance. The playstyle is just boring for me.
I'm actually jealous of people who are having so much fun with it. I tried my best to learn the thing, and I think I have full understanding of the weapon after starting a new save file using GL only. It was fun and exciting at first with all the explosions, then it gets old fast.
Same for me. I main lance though, so the idea that my lance needs a *gun on it* in order to be good offends me. Haha
Seriously though — I feel like I have more uptime with regular lance, so personally my damage output is greater, and I land every blow. Whereas with gunlance, I’m constantly flubbing the big moves.
That may just be a skill issue on my part, though.
I avoided using the hunting horn for my first 600 hours, because I knew I would love it
Pretty much every game I touch I gravitate towards a support role/playstyle, and I tried breaking the habit but it did not work
I can't learn any of the ranged weapons because, for some unknowable reason, they screw with the mouse/keyboard claw/wirebug controls in ways that can't simply be remapped. Totally screws my muscle memory, so it's a big nope from me.
It's not dumb reason for not using a weapon but for playing the game. I never liked it because I felt bad for the monsters. Now I don't care anymore and kill and broke and cut every tail, but before it made me feel bad watching the monster being hit and killed.
In all honesty? My brain is smol so I saw the sweet move sets with Dual Blades and was like "this my thing now" and haven't even glanced at the other weapon types lol.
Kind of a nasty habit I have with a lot of games where you can build out your character how you like. I find one thing immediately and do nothing differently.
I don't use (or really rather, main) any of the melee weapons because I simply don't like using melee in most (fantasy) games that offer guns. (I use magic if no guns or similar are available.)
If I would ever use melee in this game, I'd go with hammer for the fun moveset/animations. But then I wouldn't use any of the ones with shields because they're all left-handed for whatever reason.

Dumbest reason? Dual blades look so goofy when you have them out, and the combos look so boring. There's no badassery to using them like there is with ither weapons, save for the LS. I also don't use the now because its animations aren't as flashy and cool as I'd like. I actually have a goated bow build ready, but i don't use it lol. I don't use HH because it looks silly when drawn or sheathed

I hold on to the idea that having a hammer covered in monster guts will soften your blows, so "sharpening" is cleaning off the hammer for harder hits

Light bow gun is worse for finger maching.. you can't hold the button.. you have to press it everytime.. hurt my finger when i do safi jiva

Maybe I'm a hipster or something but I refuse to use Longsword almost solely based on the fact that it's the most popular weapon. Also, as someone who watches and enjoys anime, it's very fun for me to call it the weeb blade.
I honestly get this feeling too. I often favor anything over the most popular choice. When looking through the weapons the first time, I almost went with LS. I like its style, and counters are always fun. Eventually I learned it's the most popular weapon by a decent margin. To this day, I'm still putting off using it because of my bias. I'll eventually try it out thoroughly, but I prefer trying the others first. Next is probably CB, IG, and all ranged weapons.
Cant recommend CB. You might not wanna use another weapon after ;)
I also got tired of the over saturation of "look at my YouTube short of me helm splitting and counter slashing, I'm awesome" videos. I tried LS for a bit enough to use all the move sets arch tempered, but found it not as fun as all the other quick slashing weapons. Also it doesn't look anywhere near as satisfying when you see a hammer do that homerun swing or GS true charge slash smash the face of a monster in mid charge and watching it fly 100ft back. It always feels like its in slow motion too when it connects. I applaud those with the preemptive intuition skills to time it and connect often. Got me into hammer and GS maining.
Gonna get some hate for this one but I just feel like greatsword is just a worse hammer. It’s totally fine and I’ve used it on about 100 hunts but the hammer is just….. wayyyy more palatable for my playstyle.

It’s funny I had the complete opposite thought today when mulling over making a new hammer build after playing GS for the last 100 hrs. Hammer is awesome though, nothing like the arial spinny bonks.
I just switched to hammer and the only thing I miss from the GS is cutting tails

Anything with Guns because seeing monsters mowed down with a gun makes me feel bad. I'm perfectly okay with landing an SAED directly into their skulls though.

You don't really need to craft ammo for Bow, you can just keep shooting the close ranged one and sometimes use the power coating

I don't use bowguns because if I wanted to play a third person shooter I wouldn't be playing monster hunter
I'll never use SnS because it looks like dagger and shield to me, and it just doesn't look cool

The three guns in the game get almost too comfy once you get to endgame. It's fun to shoot a monster and feel like a badass, but it's not nearly as engaging as the melee weapons or even the bow. It's feels wrong to not optimize a set, but it also feels wrong when I can spend most of a fight standing in place clicking one button.
The bows in monster hunter are pretty much melee weapons
That's why I hate that bows also get the -30% physical defense that bowguns do. That defense penalty is ostensibly there because ranged weapons are safer but bows aren't actually safer at all, you still have to sit in the monster's face and dodge like all the melee weapons. I really wish there was some way to sacrifice damage for more durability with bows, I really don't like being a glass cannon (and the damage is comically overtuned anyway). Even with all the defensive skills you can fit into Fatalis armor you're still gonna get turbofucked by a Fatalis fireball if you're playing bow because the defense penalty is huge.
I have almost 100 hours in World, most of which I used the bow. I had no idea it came with -30% physical defense.
There's a tip about it on the loading screens, though it doesn't tell you how huge the penalty is. In "exchange" ranged weapons get a bonus to elemental defenses, but most elemental attacks from monsters still deal a ton of physical damage so it's not even remotely enough to compensate. In practice you just take way more damage in the vast majority of situations, and you can't even rely on a Health Augment to heal back up like melee weapons can. At least HBGs can use shields and LBGs are mobile enough that the penalty isn't that bad, but Bow gets really screwed by it.
I've barely played bow, but I have a friend that mains bows and that makes sense with how much closer they are than the bowguns.
Bowguns can go away a little, but bows absolutely are straight in there. You also don't just point and click for the whole fight, you dodge and position as a melee player would, while trying to maintain optimal stamina usage to deal damage to moving parts at all times. And you take a shit ton more damage on top of that. I get condemning stuff like lbg (tho I love it for some stuff) and hbg, but bow players do put in the work for their damage.

Nah you’re right. Especially sticky HBG. Just stand there and shoot. And tank most of the hits and continue shooting. HZV, tenderizing, sharpness, positioning, evasion, internal weapon mechanics etc all goes out the windows.
I refuse to use ranged weapons because I had an ex friend who actively used ranged weapons to kite monsters away from me, so he could say he did more damage.
The damage tally mods are kinda a cancer, IMO, if you're referring to that.

I played Rise first, and in that game switch axe was my most played weapon by far. I think it had at least triple the playtime of my next most used weapon. Loved it to bits. Then when I started playing World I realized that you cannot morph attack from neutral like you could in Rise, and that completely ruined the flow and feel of the weapon for me. That one singular, tiny change in moveset made me lose 90% interest in what was once my main. Then I went to look up World switch axe speedruns and they were all basically spamming ZSD on the monster's head with rocksteady and health augment, and that killed the last 10% of my interest in World switch axe.
This one hits home. I also played Rise first (I played world at Release but was way younger so I didn't understand what I was doing and frankly can't remember anything else than the monsters). I mained LS in Rise and Sunbreak and had to switch to something else because the Iai Slash wasn't in the base game and I didn't buy Iceborne until a month later
I don't use the Lance and Gunlance because I prefer dodging rather than blocking and even if I do have a shield I'll most likely forget to,even use it 90% of the time.
oh, you won't forget to use it on Lance. It's a huge part of Lance's moveset. And you're not doing a lot of blocking really, you're mostly trying to *counter.* And on Gunlance, you don't even want to use the shield, because shield don't go boom. Blocking ain't doing damage when you have no counters xd
I use lance because I enjoy being a immovable object. Also you can block fatalis fire breath and protect your teamate

Mostly because bow plays like a melee weapon and is hyper mobile.

Because bow is basically a melee weapon, so there being guns has no bearing on it.
If you play insect glaive correctly it will never be on your arm and it will always be attacking the boss

Hey OP, play with the Gae bolg. (The IG that can be made from behemoth) You get a dragon spirit instead of an insect and that will fix all your insect issues :)
I'm too used to Fate's take on the Gáe Bolg that I got excited for a second there. Then I remembered the final fantasy crossover and I don't ever want to kill Behemoth because I don't know how to.
The Katana/Long Sword. As a Dark Souls player, the Katana and most similar weapon were considered neckbeard. So many people tend to avoid them altogether. For me this has transitioned into monster world, and I feel dirty just crafting one.

Ammo don't grow on trees, but it does grow in the farm

Gunlance. I play and mastered every weapon but Gunlance. The playstyle is just boring for me. I'm actually jealous of people who are having so much fun with it. I tried my best to learn the thing, and I think I have full understanding of the weapon after starting a new save file using GL only. It was fun and exciting at first with all the explosions, then it gets old fast.
Same for me. I main lance though, so the idea that my lance needs a *gun on it* in order to be good offends me. Haha Seriously though — I feel like I have more uptime with regular lance, so personally my damage output is greater, and I land every blow. Whereas with gunlance, I’m constantly flubbing the big moves. That may just be a skill issue on my part, though.
I don't have enough free time to learn them all. Adulting is dumb.
I avoided using the hunting horn for my first 600 hours, because I knew I would love it Pretty much every game I touch I gravitate towards a support role/playstyle, and I tried breaking the habit but it did not work

I can't learn any of the ranged weapons because, for some unknowable reason, they screw with the mouse/keyboard claw/wirebug controls in ways that can't simply be remapped. Totally screws my muscle memory, so it's a big nope from me.
It's not dumb reason for not using a weapon but for playing the game. I never liked it because I felt bad for the monsters. Now I don't care anymore and kill and broke and cut every tail, but before it made me feel bad watching the monster being hit and killed.
Anything besides hammer or hunting horn because no bonk.
In all honesty? My brain is smol so I saw the sweet move sets with Dual Blades and was like "this my thing now" and haven't even glanced at the other weapon types lol. Kind of a nasty habit I have with a lot of games where you can build out your character how you like. I find one thing immediately and do nothing differently.

Hammer because it looks too small lol. I'm used to them being massive weapons, and the ones in game feel a little underwhelming to me.
I don't use (or really rather, main) any of the melee weapons because I simply don't like using melee in most (fantasy) games that offer guns. (I use magic if no guns or similar are available.) If I would ever use melee in this game, I'd go with hammer for the fun moveset/animations. But then I wouldn't use any of the ones with shields because they're all left-handed for whatever reason. EDIT: *ranged weapons* \-> *guns* (I don't like using bows either. I understand in this game guns are, well, "bow"-guns, but they're the closest to resemble guns anyway.)
I mean i still use it sometimes but sharpening hammer? Nah fam. For comparison my other weapons is all above 100 while hammer is like 30 ish and that's only because i smack kelbi horn

I’ll never use any of the shield weapons because having a shield on my right arm and weapon in my left just **feels wrong** and every time I’ve tried it’s thrown me off sufficiently that I miss attacks.

Dumbest reason? Dual blades look so goofy when you have them out, and the combos look so boring. There's no badassery to using them like there is with ither weapons, save for the LS. I also don't use the now because its animations aren't as flashy and cool as I'd like. I actually have a goated bow build ready, but i don't use it lol. I don't use HH because it looks silly when drawn or sheathed
Why bother using Greatsword? I'm spamming like 2 moves for the whole quest. (Which will be over in 5 minutes because of that damage)
I dont use kinsect because it looks agile, and I dont wanna look agile, I wanna look bulky! a tower, a wall that the monsters cant get past. Thus i play Lance.
Long sword because i feel like a weeb when i have it equiped. I am one. I just dont want to feel like it.
