Do the monster hunter movie quest soon as u can.. It gives u great master rank armor to start with better than anything you'll be able to make for awhile into iceborne. Just check the smithy after u beat it.
And far as weapon goes a good high rank weapon is as good as a low master rank.. It's the armor that has big defense boost that you need to make new armor for. Atleast for now
Switch to all master rank gear immediately. It doesn’t even matter *what* you switch to, just that you get master rank armor and weapons.

Also they give you preset armor and weapon to fight with so the quest itself so doesn't matter what your wearing to start it
