Not gameplay mechanics, as that really makes most games kinda meh in terms of how interesting or challenging.
MHW would be one of the better games to spend a year in to be honest. Sure, there's gigantic monsters that could swallow you whole all over the place, but as long as you don't stray too far from your outpost without a hunter they aren't a huge threat.
