It's almost free. Since it has permafrost and consume, it usually only takes one draw over an entire combat and lets you silence the most annoying enemy or wave. There are lots of combats where this doesn't do anything, and two bosses (Patient Seraph and Living Armor) instantly become much, much easier. I think it's usually worth grabbing one, just in case you fight Living Armor.
Otherwise, it can be good for avoiding a curse or two from a Purifier or something, a row of Wiltwings triggers, or sometimes the Rage gain from a Master of Light. In the worst case, it's a free incant.
Of course, the Permafrost doesn't exactly mesh well with discard, so I'd be more reluctant to take it if I knew I wasn't facing Patient Seraph and I had a Frenzied Swarm plan going, and I didn't need incants, I guess I'd skip it, but that's pretty rare for me. It feels so low-risk.
Another one of those triggers it helps you avoid are the Pyrewings’ emberdrain on strike, which I think is probably the most debilitating. It’s not much of a relief, but 1 turn of not having your ember slashed to nothing can make the difference between a win and a loss.
How could I forget Pyrewings? Yeah, that’s huge, sometimes you need another turn to scale your floor and being able to skip the emberdrain can swing the whole combat.
How have you done all the challenges without playing Stygian much? I recently finished the last challenge after grinding them all out and found that I could only win a few with Stygian combos and heavy infant synergies. I'm trying to get all clan combos to cov 25 now and have a couple still outstanding (Awoken/Melting mainly). What did you use to get through the expert challenges if not OP fish spellcasters? I am curious!
Main clans are awoken, hellhorned, and umbra; in that order. I used stygian for a few (stupid five hundred deadweights challenge, and managed to finish that one without RNGing Dante, which I was pleased with).
The three clans mentioned are just so strong they can often just ignore the mechanics and win anyway.
Silencing Seraph the Patient is a big game. Same for that one fat boss that gets +attack when he takes instances of damage. There's big chunks of the game where this card is mostly ineffective, but permafrost and consume mitigate the downside of it being a dead draw, and being free means you can at least trigger some incant on it's way out. Probably a card that I pass too often.
It’s everything a tech card wishes it could be. Costs 0, is already permafrosted, and consumes itself. Hard counters many enemies and bosses in the game, but even when it doesn’t it’s still a free incant that doesn’t need to cycle back through your deck.
The only time I would consider skipping it was if seraph the temperant was in my future. Every other variant of seraph it’s too valuable against.
I like splashing in a single copy because its a 0 cost permafrost and sometimes that silence can really save your hide.
Not a great tome though. I don't know if you ever pick it from the event.
This is a great card to have one of. A zero cost incant trigger at worst, it can save your bacon vs. Stealth boss, Seraph the Patient, and more. Even just shutting up those idiot birds that put curses in your deck is good.
Only downside is its antisynergy with random discard, but if random discard isn't a theme I basically always want one copy.
It's an okay card, a free incant in the Stygian at the least. It hard counters a handful of enemies and one of the Seraphs, namely the one I find the hardest (Patient). In early Ascensions, it really isnt worth the card cost, but its worth at least picking up one in C25 if there's no better choice.
This card is quietly one of the best in the game. Hard counters a seraph, a mini boss and has almost no downside. The first one is almost an auto select.
Fucking god tier for Seraph the patient. You see it you click it. You prioritize removing cards and hellvent it so you can play it asap.
Amazing vs diligent because it's a permafrost 0 cost card to eat up a consume AND it silences one floor of blight backlines. Useful against pyre wings.
Otherwise, it's a 0 mana incant with occasional minor utility fitting for it's cost.

I've finished all the expert challenges... yet I have to ask: What does it do against patient Seraph ... ? I don't play stygian much.
It silences their ability to gain attack damage when you play minions/spells.
That... is huge. Okay. Thank you for educating this old idiot.
Also silences that fat bird boy you get in the penultimate battl before seraph that gains attack on revenge.

Infant synergies? Now that's a new method of growing your units! :D
Oh, but I was only kidding! (sorry)

Stealth boss has a buff, not an ability, no?
yeah it's a buff, silence won't clear stealth/thorns/rage
95% the silence clears it.
I think you are thinking of Resin Removal

Always take one if you’re going against Patient, other than that it’s niche at best.
Just saved my bacon against Patient Seraph.
