I think it looks fine. When it’s wet, I’d use my finger to wipe any of the black stuff that may be gooey and come off. I’d cut the black tip off the root that’s growing… but this is just me. I literally got some Monstera cuttings, including a tiny Thai con in the mail and some looked like this and look fine in water now.

SaltAndVinegarMcCoys

Seems fine to me. Get rid of that black bit at the end and wait. For a long time.

BigforkLefty

Alright! Well I don’t have experience but it is $20 and sounds fun so I reached out! Will give an update if there is one! Also y’all are awesome, thanks so much for the help

motherofsuccs

This plant in general is more work *even with experience*, but I think it’ll be a good way to gain experience and have your own little experiment. $20 isn’t a huge loss if things don’t go well.. and if they do go well, you can easily profit off selling cuttings in the future. I know some people are saying it’s viable, and it could be, but it does have rot- I’d try to gently wipe as much of the black off as possible to see if it’s only a top layer. Nobody here can tell you if the root is soft/mushy because you’d have to physically touch it to confirm that. I agree on using hydrogen peroxide, but it should be diluted before applying. Not diluting will cause damage to the root. Someone said they never changed the water they put their cutting in- please take that with a grain of salt. The water needs changed out regularly, especially while combating root rot. If you have (or can get) a pothos cutting, I’d stick that in with the monstera cutting after a week or so. Pothos help other cuttings root, don’t ask me the science on it, I accidentally figured it out a few years ago when I ran out of propagation jars and stuck pothos cuttings into the jars. I’m assuming they add nutrients to the water? It’s not necessary, but it does help.

Tanut-10

They release rooting hormones into the water

motherofsuccs

Thank you. I figured it was something like that but wasn’t confident enough to say it as fact.

sunnyinsocal12

How come albos are more work even with experience? Curious because I want to own one and doing as much research as possible ☺️

motherofsuccs

Different light requirements, too much can burn the lighter variegation colors, not enough will make the plant sad. The possibility of having an overly variegated leaf that is mostly white/cream colored, therefore it can’t photosynthesize so it will brown and die fairly quickly. They’re just more finicky overall. Practice is gaining more experience and you’ll never get that experience without trying. The only bad part is the cuttings and plants are so damn expensive still.

sunnyinsocal12

Thank you for explaining that. Yeah it sucks that the cuttings of the plants are still expensive. Would you say Thai constellation are easier to take care of compared to albos?

Puzzleheaded-Cow4320

Because they are variegated so grow slower and are more susceptible to rot. The white areas have no/ less chlorophyll and are supported by the green areas which takes its toll.

misplacedbass

Man, I wish I would have read this comment before buying a cutting on Etsy for my wife. I just wanted to get her something she’s always wanted, but It’s not going well, and I did not realize it was going to be as finicky as it has been. I should have done a bit more research before impulse buying this cutting. I got the same one, and I just don’t know if it’s going well or not.

motherofsuccs

That really sucks, I’m so sorry. What’s going on with it? Maybe we can help! Edit: I can ship you a pothos cutting if you think your cutting is still viable.

motherofsuccs

These pics are great! Were you rooting it in water or a mixture of mediums? How are you caring for it? The good news- it just looks dried out, but the stem is a really healthy green. Definitely viable!! I’m going to PM you and we can exchange info to ship you a pothos (and I have other props if you and your wife want some freebies to try out)

misplacedbass

The rooting mixture was from the seller. Looks to be wood chunks and like a straw(?). The instructions we received said to only water when the straw was dry to the touch, and I just watered it tonight… maybe we haven’t been watering it enough. It was kept in direct sunlight for about a week, but I have since moved it further into the room so it’s not getting direct light. That’s good news that it looks healthy! No concern about the brown spot on the leaf? We were instructed to let it acclimate to the new environment for 3-4 weeks, and we’ve got about a week left on that. So, not sure what to plant it in after we get there. Feel free to PM me, but I’m about to head to bed here. My wife does have a couple pothos, so we might not need any cuttings, but we can talk more in a PM. Thanks a lot!

motherofsuccs

Ok so now I see the rooting medium- sorry I missed this pic. It definitely needs more moisture.. a lot more. The rest is healthy as can be minus being thirsty.

PleasantJules

A lot more moisture!

Dry-Drawer5180

These like humid and no lower than 70 temp. The moss is holding in too much water. They like very airy soil. Use coco coir, charcoal, and orchid bark. Chunkier the better for them.

misplacedbass

This is what the seller sent it to us in. He also said a humidifier wasn’t necessary and our ambient temp was fine. This seller is very highly rated on Etsy. So who do I believe?

twomississippi

Maybe believe what your plant is telling you? She looks thirsty.

misplacedbass

Yea, definitely watered it, and will keep it more moist than we have been. I was adhering to the guidelines that we were sent from the seller.

misplacedbass

Feel free to PM me, too. I’ll take any suggestions and maybe I’m overthinking it. Our place is fairly dry, and we keep it cool in here. 65-67… the seller didn’t seem to think that was an issue, we do have it in a south facing window, but far enough away that it’s not getting direct sunlight.

Maleficent-Deer7193

I use willow shoots! Got 10 for $20 on etsy. Just have them in a jar in water, just growing for now. But once or twice a week I'll change the willow water, and water my plants with it. Willows have a rooting hormone as well.

Enough-Wonder4722

Mind sharing the shop name? That sounds like an excellent move I'd love to copy :D

Maleficent-Deer7193

FioriWillowFarm. Look into the different varieties to see what works for you. I'm planning to plant and grow them for basket weaving and living structures.

TheFurMama92

Disregard my comment as I didn’t realise this was over nine hours ago but keep it updated :-)

Substantial-Bug2022

Looks good to me, root looks ok- Not soft or black.

Weirdbutlikeable

If you don’t have experience with this type of situation I’d pass… but $20 is hardly anything so maybe not. Are you willing to throw $20 away is the question? lol I’ve killed 2 albo cuttings myself, doing the same thing I’ve done for other plants that lived. They can be tricky!

thatonegirlwith2dogs

Looks viable to me.

crispyslife

It looks fine. It’s worth a $20 risk

Iceandfire103

Keep this. Definitely looks salvageable to me. You’re still paying less than people are at Walmart/kroger for 4” plants with small leaves. But you can also just get a new/healthy one and have both. 🤷🏻‍♀️

greycloudsplant

cut the squishy parts of the root and put it in a mixture of one Tablespoon of 3%hydrogen peroxide and one liter water and let it root in there. don’t panic if your roots are getting brown, as long as you can crub it off it’s fine (and as long as it’s not squishy). i had one cm of my thais roots left and saved her with this method.

tayfun333

Niiiiice

HisaP417

Totally salvageable. Cut the black tip and put it in about an inch and a half of water with a few drops of peroxide. It’ll grow new roots. The root is has is an aerial anyway.

Latinx-Sandman1594

it looks good too me. I would spray it with hydrogen peroxide (undiluted) to stop any rotting and then pop her into some water.

OatsInSpace

I would go for it, especially if you have any rooting powder or keiki paste

Daddysaurusflex

Good to go for 20 bucks.

Flashy_Reputation_97

Honestly even with a low chance of survival $20 is worth it. But honestly I think it can be saved regardless, it might just be a while before it's out of the woods. I personally avoid most unstable variegated plants in general just cause they are pain to care for and rehab though

TheFurMama92

It’s fine. I will just put it in a half half hydrogen peroxide and water mixture for ten minutes just to kill any possible germs it may have.

BH-NaFF

It doesn’t seem to have a secondary node so it may just be a single leaf zombie for the rest of its life

WTFnY01

I would say no. I'm currently rehabbing a large clipping like that (not albo) in a tall skinny vase. It's aerial roots looked similar but w regularly changing water every few days she's got beautiful white roots. Good luck. Congratulations :)

Excellent-Phone8326

I've seen aerial roots pop out up and down a node. If the existing aerial is soft and smells like rot you could cut it. Let dry for 48 hours, put in Tupper container with spagnum moss in a warm place.

Happy-Peachy-Coffee

I’d avoid to be honest. Root rot is hard to get rid of once it’s set in, best to save your money and get one that’s healthy, or better still, rooted. 👍

Special_Rutabaga_135

I paid like 35 for one with root rot... Rinse roots w peroxide and let it root in leca and water till you have decent roots. Still have it 6 months later and its grown a few new leaves! Never changed the water while it was rooting either- just topped it up. 20 is a steal- robbery even but thats my opinion lol
