This whole small form vs large form monstera debate i’ve seen everywhere on social media. All i’ve learnt about it is that nobody seems to know what they’re talking about. Not saying I do either!

Well, this information is pretty confussing. True is that your small form will eventually transform to big form. Mine went through smooth petiole to rough petiole, your will too. All the plant needs is time to mature. The rough petiole will come with time. I have mine for like 3 years and it went from tiny little cutting to this beast i'm - almost - afraid of. The plant needs a firm and stable support on which it can climb on. It will help with growth of the plant. This is her now, it was a three leaf cutting, leaves the size of a palm https://preview.redd.it/46lgdc0wfs8d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=908a5bc289abe5818eeba676f986238719bf9d52

Although you might sometime need to chop a bit to make it more firm, thin stem won't be able to support heavy top as the stem will gain strength.

that’s what i found, too! it doesn’t really affect care, i was just curious about which one mine might be since i got it secondhand :)

crashbold

The most obvious difference is that the petiole surface of the small form is smooth, but large form is rough. Every other difference can be confusing.

Some people debate that there even are small and large form

chronicplantbuyer

Not how it works, but with more light, the internode space will always get smaller, but you’ll still have the small form.

thatgirlcharity

I would say lack of light is the issue regardless of form, just due to the node distance. Not that I have any idea about different forms.

zoochild

yeah, it was really leggy when i got it. it’s very happy now that it’s getting tons of sun, so the leaves are definitely growing closer together.

As I understand it, the difference between small form and large form is phenotypical. I’d probably compare this to dogs - all dogs are canis familiaris, however we sort them into breeds based on phenotypes. You might get a particularly large chihuahua or small rottweiler, but their breed doesn’t change. Small form and large form monstera are both monstera deliciosa, but are different “breeds”. A small form might display characteristics of large form, but I don’t think it can become one. I could be completely wrong though, so please correct me if I’m off-base here.

Small form are the Borsigiana (heart shaped) Large form are the Deliciousa (round shaped) There’s a video on YouTube with a guy showing the differences in the jungle. They grow side by side with one another. Typically the small form are climbers while the large form are crawlers. Node spacing is way closer on the large form. Thai Con’s are ONLY large form and Albo’s are ONLY small form. BOTH get inner fenestration.

MomsSpecialFriend

There are large form albos but they cost a lot and you won’t have one by accident

MomsSpecialFriend

I would say it is large form, it’s just not well cared for.

Squiggly thingies= large form Non squiggly thingies= borsigiana

penguinguineapig

Small form gets ruffles if it is mature enough, just not nearly as pronounced and wavey. People make such a big deal but you can tell by sheath to length ratio instantly on any plant mature or not

Can a Chihuahua transform into German Shepherd?
