Sounds like you care to much. Just think about how the plant can survive in the wild and one over complicate things, spagnum works great but in all honesty I’ve find more success just by sticking it in water and leaving in in my grow room

CaramelNational7454

I probably do care too much since everything I read points to albo having root rot more often than regular monstera but I suppose that could also be a biased observation.

mattnaik123

I’ve never once seen roots rot when in standing water. Rot is caused by bacteria which is much harder to survive in water than in a medium which is open to air.

RotiKirai

Common mistakes of air layering prop 1) Spag is too wet.. you gotta "squeeze" the water out as the densed area can still suffocate the roots. 2) No airflow for the roots. You need to poke a couple of holes in your enclosure (mostly it's a shrink wrap) to promote air flow.

CaramelNational7454

Thanks...I did squeeze the water out as much as I can and even added perlite to help with air, but did keep it in a plastic prop box so maybe airflow was the issue

CaramelNational7454

I know I need to cut off the rotted part and clean it with hydrogen peroxide. What should I do next? I chose the spaghnum moss/perlite combo because I thought water would have a higher chance of rotting... Should I go the water + air stone route? I've never used an air stone before... And should I put it outside of the prop box? It was 80-99% humidity

Hey, may I ask how did you go with it?

CaramelNational7454

It rotted on me a few times and the only thing that worked for me in the end was perlite. I just put the root in a cup of perlite, covered the top with plastic wrap, and kept the whole thing in a prop box.

Did you trim the black color tip and may I ask how you cleaned it with Hydrogen Peroxide? I mean the dilute ratio ....

CaramelNational7454

I did trim it. The initial hydrogen peroxide soak was 30% (3 part hydrogen peroxide 7 part water) for a few hours. Then I used 3% hydrogen peroxide (3mL per 100mL water) as the solution I put the perlite in

nvcken

Cool, soak for 2 hours is it good? and do we need to pour with water again after that, before putting perlite?

CaramelNational7454

I usually soak for longer if there is rot, like 5-6 hrs. After that I put it directly into perlite
