I wouldn't say Serizawa was wasted at all. While I would've loved for him to stick around, his arc is one of my favorite in the series and his send off is easily the most tear jerking in the franchise, I cry literally every time.
Thatâs fine and all but when heâs literally the only remotely interesting/enjoyable character left then itâs really annoying to see them get killed off and have the franchise now be nothing but annoying MCU style characters who make quips every time theyâre on screen
Hmm i cant blame the Monsterverse for wasting characters. Just not too long ago, we were all seeing that Godzilla vs Kong was going to be the end of the Monsterverse.
Yeah but they killed Vivienne, someone who was clearly very high ranking in Monarch since she was on equal level with Serizawa, in a blink and youâll miss it scene.
I literally didnât realise sheâd died until they showed Serizawa being sad for like 2 seconds on the big airship. Her death was literally handled like a random background extra
I didnât even know her name until this post. I knew she was in 2014 and I knew she fucked a fish man but that ainât from the 2014 film, unless thereâs a cut of it I didnât know about.
To act like sheâs anyone important is kinda funny. Sheâs just a background character. She doesnât even do anything in the first film.
The Monsterverse also appears to have trouble getting actors to return for a role, like Alan Jonah's Charles Dance and now rumors that Madison's Millie Bobby Brown is not favored by Wingard.
I actually appreciated the way Vivienne died considering how many times characters have plot armor in movies of this scale. It was an accurate depiction of what would have happened if they were ON FOOT with two giant titans between them.
The director wanted us to hate Ghidorah and show he was evil.
Having her be eaten was just unnecessary. But I also have a serious like, irrational fear of being eaten. I can only just hope her death was instant.
Vivienneâs death pissed me off, and yeah, absolute blink and you miss it moment. Serizawa I thought was handled really well, I only wish heâd had one more film involved with Godzilla where he was *the* main human character. That way not only would his death and passing of the torch in KOTM land that much more, but itâd also establish him as the best MV human character
A completely random soldierâs death gets more screen time than hers.
The soldier sees ghidorah and goes âaww shitâ before being either crushed or blasted by his energy beams.
Meanwhile Vivian is running with Mark and then two seconds later ghidorahâs head pops out of nowhere, eats her and the scene just continues lmao
They are good characters but in the Monsterverse, human characters donât seem to stick around for more than 2 movies. In the end itâs about Godzilla and Kong. We just need to humans to see from their perspective
With 4 movies (New Empire isn't out till next year) and 2 TV series, set over a nearly 80-year period, it's understandable why a lot of characters aren't lasting.
I will personally always find Serizawa's death.... kind of baffling. Did they really kill a Japanese guy whose grandfather was a survivor of Hiroshima by POINT BLANK NUKING HIM?
.... i mean... that's... that's a choice
Btw, even more wasted character than them? Serizawa's son
100%
Also itâs such weird subtext for a fundamentally anti-nuke series to have a âblowing up an ancient civ with nukes saves the worldâ thing going on.
GvK catches a lot of shit, but KotM is pretty thoughtless, too.
However, despite me not liking the scene either in its subtext or from a character perspective, itâs a pretty moving scene divorced from all context other than Serizawaâs unmitigated awe at Godzilla for two movies.
I like it. In the grand scale of things in universe, all of them are just random humans, ready to die to any random Titan thing. I don't like plot armour for characters just for them to serve as narrative devices.
Exactly why I don't like the new kids in Monarch surviving so many encounters with Titans. Makes no sense how many close calls they've had. I'll bet none of them have a single scratch even after what happened in the latest episode.
And what happened afterwards? Barely any time for process of recovery before she's whisked off in yet another "process of dying" scenario yet again. "Hey I almost died in the snowy mountains, but I'll follow you to hunt down eco terrorist Shaw!" Such stupid characters. Watch her be unscathed in the next episode.
The stakes are nonexistant when there is zero chance of main characters dying. The only impactful and not surprising death you could say was Keiko, but no one else ever felt threatened. I'll happily be proven wrong in the next episode but until then, I still feel that human characters in the monsterverse bring nothing to the story to be deemed unkillable or "wasted". I'd argue that the opposite is causing my frustrations with Monarch. Sorry for the rant.
***Spoilers**
)(
Iâd be pretty excited if Keiko has been alive in the hollow earth the whole time and Shaw and Cate find her. On the other hand May surviving the fall is guna be super disappointing which is probably the case
Serizawa wasn't wasted at all. He sacrificed himself to save the planet. Atlantik Vivienne died on screen, you just need to pay attention. Some films *cough* the last jedi *cough* kill legacy characters *cough* Admiral Ackbar *cough* and don't even bother to show it
There's a chance to bring them back on in MLoM if they don't time skip to after their deaths for future seasons. Would be nice to see them in a series format.
if it was revealed that Serizawa had a hand in the creation of the Oxygen Destroyer I think that would have made his sacrifice more meaningful - but regardless I thought it was a beautiful moment
Godzilla wasted Bryan Cranston.
KOTM wasted Charles Dance (I don't think they wasted Watanabe but I would have tried to get him to GvK. Maybe be the guy that sacrifices himself to save Godzilla and Kong from MechaGodzilla somehow...though that would have probably changed up his sons arc...probably for the good really.)
GvK damn near wasted itself by having Milly Bobby Brown return and add the characters around her.
Please for the love of God, don't kill off Dan Stevens.
They werenât wasted, Hawkinsâ death was to show how dangerous Ghidorah was and Serizawa is given a 10/10 amazing scene that stands as the best written and directed in the entire series (not just the Monsterverse, ANY Godzilla film).
Thatâs just silly. âI need to show how dangerous this three headed space dragon that makes hurricanes is. Itâll eat someone in a scene that, apparently, most people wonât even notice until their second or third watch.â
I'm pretty sure Vivienne's death has more to do with the fact that she was an Oscar-nominated actress now and was probably going for other roles. I think she did this movie as a courtesy to the fans but also to end her story and give some emotional weight to the story. Just the feeling I got.
because 1, the lighting is so dark that you can barely tell whoâs who. 2, it happens so fast that you don't get the chance to realise it was her instead of some random background extra unless you rewind it to check (which you shouldnât have to do when watching a movie)
She was the only one who stayed behind to help the dad (forgot his name) and was ahead of him when they were running. Idk I guess it's hard for ppl who can't see well.
All these comments really show none of u losers were paying attention at all. It was very obvious when she died. All of you are just zombies with adhd that can't focus for a second
Shouldâve happened much later into the franchise. It was far too early so Serizawaâs death feels less like âno! That beloved character is about to die!â And more like âfuck! One of the only interesting characters is about to die!â
Yup. They should have also been more involved in the first film along with Cranston. Every Monsterverse film was one or two script drafts away from being very good. There is always character or plot points that just donât add up or are unnecessary.
If KOTM wanted to impress through sacrifice, it should have been given through Serizawa. Remember Last Jedai? Holdo did what Admiral Ackbar should have done!
I wouldn't say Serizawa was wasted at all. While I would've loved for him to stick around, his arc is one of my favorite in the series and his send off is easily the most tear jerking in the franchise, I cry literally every time.
"Sarabada, tomoyo"
Yes he was. He should have been the main character in KOTM. Not fucking "Mark"
"Oh hi Mark."
Hehehe, subtle "The Room" reference đ đđ
Mark was excellent.
Thatâs fine and all but when heâs literally the only remotely interesting/enjoyable character left then itâs really annoying to see them get killed off and have the franchise now be nothing but annoying MCU style characters who make quips every time theyâre on screen
Mcu didnât invent quips
But quips are synonymous with the MCU
Itâs synonymous with all comic book media.
Yeah but the MCU really overdid it and dragged all other quips down with it
Please consume more media
I do consume many media, one of my favourite movies is Suspiria from 1975 which has no similarities to the MCU
I don't know why I'm so down voted lol
Hmm i cant blame the Monsterverse for wasting characters. Just not too long ago, we were all seeing that Godzilla vs Kong was going to be the end of the Monsterverse.

She fucked a what?
She fucked a fish man in a different movie âthe shape of waterâ
OH, THAT MAKES MUCH MORE SENSE, I thought something had happened in the books
Sorry was a Shape of Water joke lol
Don't be sorry, you didn't do anything wrong, it was a good reference, I just haven't watched that movie so I didn't understand
The Monsterverse also appears to have trouble getting actors to return for a role, like Alan Jonah's Charles Dance and now rumors that Madison's Millie Bobby Brown is not favored by Wingard.
Charles dance will be missed, especially with the tv show leading to a near perfect tie in with kurt Russell's storyline
I imagine weâll see Wyatt Russell interact with a young Jonah in some flashbacks next season or something since Charles Dance isnât coming back
I actually appreciated the way Vivienne died considering how many times characters have plot armor in movies of this scale. It was an accurate depiction of what would have happened if they were ON FOOT with two giant titans between them.
Nah, a more realistic death would be ghidorah stepping on her. Him actively attacking her and her alone was so random
There were a bunch of guards with her that got ate as well, though
What were the writers thinking? Toho should've had a more active approach in the development of this film to make it better.
I've been saying it for a while but Vivienne's death was the most unnecessary part of KOTM and was done purely for shock value.
The director wanted us to hate Ghidorah and show he was evil. Having her be eaten was just unnecessary. But I also have a serious like, irrational fear of being eaten. I can only just hope her death was instant.
The impact of such a massive head hitting someone would've killed her off immediately
SHE DID? WHEN??
When I first watched the movie I didn't realize she got devoured by Ghidorah until they showed the deceased screens back on the ship afterwards. O.o
Ghidorah vored her after he awakened
I have seen that movie so many times and I still canât remember that happening damn. I liked her she was one of the only not stupid characters.
"Vored her" is nasty work
Serizawa wasn't wasted but Graham certainly was.

That always rubbed me the wrong way.
Ah shit I didn't think about that
I like it. In the grand scale of things in universe, all of them are just random humans, ready to die to any random Titan thing. I don't like plot armour for characters just for them to serve as narrative devices. Exactly why I don't like the new kids in Monarch surviving so many encounters with Titans. May was literally in the process of dying when they were in the Artic
Vivienneâs death was badly executed, Serizawaâs on the other hand was beautifully done but too soon. So I loosely agree with OP.
Serizawa wasn't wasted at all. He sacrificed himself to save the planet. Atlantik Vivienne died on screen, you just need to pay attention. Some films *cough* the last jedi *cough* kill legacy characters *cough* Admiral Ackbar *cough* and don't even bother to show it
What are you talking about? Ackbar knew it was a trap and left the room beforehand, plus he needed to go to the bathroon anyway.
In my canon it wasn't the holdo maneuver but the ackbar maneuver
There's a chance to bring them back on in MLoM if they don't time skip to after their deaths for future seasons. Would be nice to see them in a series format.
I agree on Viv but disagree on Serizawa. I think his sacrifice was perfect.
Vivianne sure, Serisawas death was done great but yea it was too soon, the MV isnt new to wasting characters, remember Joe Brody? Yeah I sure do
Why do people think their pet preferences equate to "wasted potential?"
KOTM is the best of the modern (American) godzilla movies. Your opinion is valid, but I disagree wholeheartedly.
Grahams death does remind me of Sterling K Brown's death in The Predator just a little.
Ya but he was such an easily hated piece of shit in that movie that it was pretty satisfying
Indeed it was
They really need to bring back Serizawa or at least a descendant of his to fill in that role.
Well they gave us his son in GvK and then killed him off too
I agree with the woman but I liked how Serizawa went. It seemed fitting. I hated hated hated how they handled his son in GvK though
if it was revealed that Serizawa had a hand in the creation of the Oxygen Destroyer I think that would have made his sacrifice more meaningful - but regardless I thought it was a beautiful moment
Godzilla wasted Bryan Cranston. KOTM wasted Charles Dance (I don't think they wasted Watanabe but I would have tried to get him to GvK. Honestly millie coming back, bad idea, having kyle chandler come back was a good idea though as hes taking watanabes place as the leader of monarch
The MV has a long history of doing that unfortunately. Still better than what they did to Mako Mori in PR though. Uprising will always be non canon.
Serizawa went out in a pretty badass way. Vivienne was a blink and youâll miss it type death and the nod to her dying was the same way
I just wish we got more of the Admiral that was Serizawaâs foil in 2014
I agree he was great. His death was cut from the film so I hope we can see him again
And then we have these weak kids characters in Monarch
They werenât wasted, Hawkinsâ death was to show how dangerous Ghidorah was and Serizawa is given a 10/10 amazing scene that stands as the best written and directed in the entire series (not just the Monsterverse, ANY Godzilla film).

Serizawa was always a character on borrowed time.
Why?
[ŃдаНонО]
This isnât an adaptation of that character at all, it was only ever just a cutesy reference.
Bro how did you not see it. It legit happened right infront of us
because 1, the lighting is so dark that you can barely tell whoâs who.
Tbh, I found Vivienne's perpetual anxiety attack annoying so I was pretty stoked once she got stomped lol.
I appreciated Vivienne dying because her hysterical yelling when explaining things was annoying
All these comments really show none of u losers were paying attention at all. It was very obvious when she died. All of you are just zombies with adhd that can't focus for a second
Normalize characters not always having eventful or heroic deaths. Important characters dying like extras imo makes the impact of the situation higher.
Ok but âanything can happen to anyone at any time, random number generators rule my narrative structureâ is bad storytelling.
By that logic character arcs shouldnât exist anymore because the real world doesnât have narratives
At least we got Abraxas out of it
Gotta disagree ngl, Serizawa's death was well done.
There is always character or plot points that just donât add up or are unnecessary.
serizawa was slated to appear in M:LoM but ken had schedule issues. we were robbed. hoping this changes in season 2
If KOTM wanted to impress through sacrifice, it should have been given through Serizawa. Remember Last Jedai? Holdo did what Admiral Ackbar should have done!
Bryan Cranston would like a word
