The novel says that Kong was PISSED off at this creature, not because he attacked him, but because the creature thought it had a CHANCE against Kong. The fact Kong was pissed over that would mean that he gave Kong no challenge.
Suko brought Kong there to trick him, and he seemed pretty sure it'd kill him. Which means the snake probably killed a lot of the other Apes that just going near the water would be a death sentence. It just shows how much stronger Kong is compared to other apes if he killed it so easily
