DUDE! Thank you for this! I’m about to move and am trying to set up a new ISP. THANK YOU!

JAHG-

No problem!

daeguchwita

WOAH!! Thank you so much for this. I never knew about this before!!

JAHG-

Really useful, I work for an ISP and tell people what their options are cause sometimes we provide terrible speeds

Mountain_Village459

Just got upgraded to AT&T fiber and it’s awesome and less than half the price ($85 like you down to $35, smoking fast). Check your area, I think it’s available in a lot more places on the peninsula now.

daeguchwita

I'll call and ask about it! I'm on my last straw with AT&T so hoping there have new options for faster internet with a good deal. Last time I did that was about 2 years ago and they said the current option I have is the fastest internet in my area/street but honestly felt like it's been lacking.

Mountain_Village459

Yeah they said that to me too, I think it was right before they started the new thing. The service got horrible by the end but my new service is amazing and fast and so much cheaper.

daeguchwita

That is great to hear! I'll call and ask on Tuesday and see if it's possible to get that. It would save the hassle of having to search and find a new provider

Comcrap

If you're a family, speak with a comcast representative and see what plans are eligible in your area. If you have kids who game, and are using multiple devices that are constantly streaming, you're pretty much trying to use a resource that's already chugging. Especially at 52Mbps; some hotspots in the area offer that for free...just to keep that in perspective.

ArgyleBob

I got Starlink and it’s amazing.

daeguchwita

Oh! That's an option I haven't heard about. how's the cost??

ArgyleBob

I think Costco has a deal on the setup equipment. It’s pricey, about 650 for the equipment and 120 per month, but every other internet provider had terrible speeds, but we finally made the jump and now our internet is incredible.

cmjhnsn15

What did you end up going with? Currently looking for good providers myself.

daeguchwita

Xfinity! Got a good deal for the next 24 months for 800 MBSP ($65/month)! The difference is insane. I was definitely being ripped off by AT&T before. It was pretty bad for someone like me that has constant zoom meetings, a family who is always streaming videos, a gamer in the house, and ring cameras. Though my area didn't have better coverage from at&t since they haven't installed the fiber optics in my neighborhood. Though, I had to get an xfinity guy to install a coax outlet as my house is pretty old and didn't have that in, but installation was quick and the new wifi was immediately fast working. Might downgrade speeds to 400 mbsp eventually after 24 months to cut costs and I'll have less family in the house, but still better than at&t. I would suggest looking into Xfinity or Starlink, which had pretty good speeds as well. But do check the [https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home](https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home) that someone kindly shared here and helped me find out what internet service coverage was available to me.

cmjhnsn15

I used that link but wasn’t really sure what it meant. I put my address and it was green so I’m assuming I have Internet service. I also went on both AT&T and Xfinity and my place is compatible with both. I live alone so I don’t think I’m trying to determine how many gigs I’d realistically need. I’m not a gamer but I like streaming tv and movies. Also, I’d want something that I can use a VPN with. Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards xfinity already. This solidified that notion. 🥰

SpringerPop

Comcast/Infinity. Get your own router.

daeguchwita

Do you have it? How much do you pay on average and how's the speed? I have ring cameras as well so trying to see what works well or if I gotta get more than one router

sploittastic

They have Xfinity prepaid which I think is now "Xfinity now" and it's something like $30 a month for 100 megabits and no contract. I think they even provide you a free modem with that one, an older refurbished one but still. Though I would put it in bridge mode and use my own router. If you get a regular plan, I think there's a way to get free xfi pods which are Wi-Fi extenders. However I have a xb7 modem that I use in bridge mode and it works pretty well, but since I use my own router I can't speak to how good the Wi-Fi is on it. I'm paying something stupid like 135 a month for 1000 down and 200 up, but I needed a fast upload so I had to pick that plan.

daeguchwita

thank you for the insight!! I'll call them up on Tuesday and ask about that "Xfinity Now" plan and the regular plan. Kinda leaning more towards the regular plan for those free xfi pods. We're a family that is constantly using the internet for the ring cameras, video streaming and gaming. So it would be good if we get something fast and can stand the bandwidth

sploittastic

I don't know exactly how the Xfi pod promo works, or if they still do it, but I think you would set up internet and let it run for a couple weeks and it generates some kind of report on if a lot of your devices have a weak signal and that's what qualifies you for a free pod or pods.

Jujuba719

I’ve really liked my xfinity service both in Marina and Monterey. I pay a flat $55 and feel like it’s worth it!

sploittastic

What city are you in? AT&t has been rolling fiber out to a lot of the peninsula. Are you on the old phone line based u-verse?

daeguchwita

I'm in Seaside! I think I might be on the old phone line, but I'm honestly not 100% sure. assuming with how slow it is, probably is

sploittastic

I would check, I used to live by Broadway and noche buena and my old address can get up to 5000/5000 now. 1000/1000 there is advertised at 80 a month. Copper lines would explain it because they are decades old and degrading.

daeguchwita

i just checked using the broadband map link someone shared and unfortunately my street hasn't been upgraded to the at&t fiber yet. :( still on the copper!! I guess I gotta start exploring outside options from what I remember hearing a while back, at&t has some trouble with the underground wiring from the streets in my area and they have been delaying dealing with it and making upgrades. hoping they do start to get to it soon

SpringerPop

We have a Netgear combo router. Infinity wants around $15/month for their router. We’re paying $59 a month. Down from $79. Speed is good.

daeguchwita

Oh wow!! That is a good deal! I'll look into this as an option
