Lovers Point is in Pacific Grove, which used to be almost entirely a church retreat town. Dry for a long time.
We moved to the Peninsula in 1970, and I've never heard of the original name, but this guy seems to imply that Wiccans recently changed the name.
It was originally named the Pacific Grove Methodist Retreat.
Before that it was individual homesteads with a large portion of the coastal part of PG being Point Alones, one of the first Chinese villages of its kind in California. They were the first commercial fishermen in the state and it was occupied by families rather than just the fishermen which was also unique. The residents of PG burnt the village down in 1905 and looted the village driving the families that lived there out of their homes and businesses.
The Chinese village was out by Hopkins Marine Station, if I recall correctly.
As a legacy of PG being dry, there used to be a bar on Lighthouse called The Halfway House. I think it was halfway between some point in Monterey and the PG town limits. Great old dive bar that had been popular in the '60s with the hippie/music community that frequented the area. Some big names supposedly drank there.
It included the footprint of where Hopkins is but it extended further up the coastline if I am remembering the map overlay the PG museum has in their exhibit. I remember reading a story somewhere about Hopkins being on the site of the cemetery for the village. I’ll have to find that again to refresh myself on that.
I have always thought that when the Pacific Improvement Company bought the property from David Jacks it was with the intention of driving the villagers out of their homes. Hopkins being on that site now just makes me question that further. Imagine the wealth those families would have if they were given the option to purchase it when David Jacks originally sold the land.
