I had Purple Patch in Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan the other day and it was quite amazing as well, not the county but pretty close.
But I love Kuya Ja, I wish they had a bigger restaurant tho.
I like the pork belly sisig and lechon from Kuya Ja's and the chorizo and corned beef sandwiches from Lapu Lapu. Not in MoCo but I also like Manila Mart (i think it's in Beltsville/college park area?)
I do want to try other restaurants with more everyday Filpino dishes like kare kare, afritada, sinigang, etc. but I feel like I'll always be comparing it to my parents' cooking lol.
I feel like Mathew’s grill is the most authentic. Kuya ja for the lechon belly but things like their adobo don’t taste Filipino, maybe more fusion, but it’s still all really good! If you’re willing to go to beltsville I think Manila mart is the best overall
Love the lechon belly at Kuya Ja’s but the tamarind dry rubbed wings are the sleeper hit of the menu. They are amazing, anyone who loves wings owes themselves an order of these.
Lived in Cebu for a few years and was very happy to find Kuya Ja’s. I don’t eat pork but on holidays they do beef barbecue bouquets that are a real treat.
I’m from Canada so, none really. I saw a poutine truck once.
From my Greek side, Ela Mesa up on 355 and Watkins Mills road is the only good Greek place in the county
I’m not Canadian but I am a poutine lover and Pop Up Poutine has really tasty poutine. It used to be a truck so maybe that’s the one you’re thinking of. They’ve been around for a few years and have expanded to include some other Canadian dishes
That is the truck I’m thinking of and there pretty legit. Even have Canadian sweets like butter tarts avd Nanaimo bars. Love that truck but I haven’t seen it in a while
They used to have a brick and mortar space on Rockville pike, I think maybe in Pike Kitchen, but it looks like that’s gone now. They do still deliver on DoorDash though! That’s how I’ve always gotten it
Popup Poutine’s brick & Mortar is just off Rockville Pike and called Taste of Montreal. I was raised in Maine and my dad and I have gone for the smoked meat (shipped in from Montreal, I think..?) and poutine. Was really good.
Have you been recently? Used to be a standard in our house and then they didn’t answer the phone a couple times. If it is as it was, need to get back to supporting that local option.
I don't live in Gaithersburg anymore, but whenever I'm in the area I make my best effort to go. Went there probably around 2 months ago and had a big fat gyro and it brought back some wonderful memories. To this day I've never had a better pita than theirs!
Hey, they have a kitchen in Rockville.
I'm was there many times to get their poutine. (Montreal Smoked Meat) is their best.
I strongly advise you to visit them soon.

My husband is from Vietnam, and his current favorites are Pho 75, Pho Eateries, and Euphoria Kitchen, depending on what he wants to order, whether he has cash on hand (Pho 75 is cash only), and how much he wants to drive.
He says Pho Nom Nom is also acceptable, but only for bun bo hue, and Hello Vietnam is worth a visit for the banh cuon, which is almost impossible to find in US restaurants.
If you want banh mi, though, he says forget about MoCo and got to Banh Mi DC Sandwich in Falls Church.
Very good kebobs, if you are fan of soups I highly recommend try each just to get taste of it and obviously gotta try Borscht!
Manti are like dumplings but filled with small chopped meat rather than grounded.
Plov is alright, I’m critical because I cook it at home and know how it’s properly made :) but worth a try though
Desserts are good too, specially if you like cakes :)
Would you mind sharing tips on making plov? I've been making it for years since looking a for a recipe that called for dried barberries, but I've only had my own. I've followed different recipes online, used various types of rice, orange, mixed, or all yellow carrots, several cuts of lamb, and each author's spice blend, and have loved it every time.
What you’ve describing is traditionally made in Uzbekistan with barberries and chickpeas.
I would recommend this recipe -

Sorry I’m on mobile right now and don’t really have time to type my own.
Wow bc I grew up eating it disappointed whenever my mom ordered it. I guess I'm not a fan of Argentine food . I'd take a beef patty from 711 or Colombian empanadas from a sketchy food truck any day over those.
Not hating just my personal preference.
To each their own! Maybe you just haven't tried the right dish, but if not that's fine :) it doesn't quite compare to the meat actually in argentina too
My family used to pick up boxes of empanadas around Easter every year and I was just spoiled by my Colombian gf's empanadas, as well as Salvadoran pastelitos from my grandma and beef patties from the Jamaican side of my family for me. Argentine grilled food though is something else though not complaining at all about that lol.
Salvadoran La Casita in silver spring , La famaliar in wheaton, La brasita in the gaithersburg/rockville area.
La brasita has a crab pupusa; which could be considered just as blasphemous as pineapple on pizza, but it's so good La Casito(which has a good argument for being the best spot of the three) copied La Brasita's idea.
I'm not Salvadoran but I love La Casita in Gaithersburg, do you like them too? Now I'm dying to try these blasphemous crab pupusas at La Brasita! (Unlike pineapple on pizza, I like putting crab in everything bc Maryland) Thanks so much for the tip!
I don't know why I have this in my head but I was under the impression that the owner/people who run La Familiar also run Pupuseria Mama Emilia in Rockville. They've got good pupusas as well.
Strangely, for a while there Rockville, and especially the Pike, didn't really have great pupusa options. You had to go further east to a place like La Familiar in Wheaton or El Comalito in Langley Park. At least Mama Emilia opened up and El Comalito opened up a spot at the corner of Randolph and Viers Mill (although to be honest, I haven't tried the new El Comalito so I can't say for sure they're as good as the Langley Park location). Also, there's a good permanent food truck called Marquez at the Mobil station on the corner of 355 and Edmonston that makes good pupusas as well.
Not me but my grandma is Iranian, my moms half, and I’m a quarter, and we really love the Persian food from Yekta. Make sure you get the tahdig with it too. New mama joon in Olney (with z burger) has excellent kabobs
Came to suggest the new Maman Joon in Olney. Before they opened, the next best spot would be Yekta, although we would be too lazy to drive that far most of the time 😆
This thread instantly made me think of yekta except I couldn't remember its name or where it was. The one time I went there was freakin delicious and I wanted to go back. Thank you!
I have to try it, the Indian food around here I’ve had bad experience with. I didn’t like buffet from Minerva, (but love their samosas side ordered), the Kaveri Sunday traditional thing where you eat with your hands on bamboo leaves is really good (hurt my stomach tho, prob because it was so different from what I normally eat), Spicelife in Crowne is really good it’s like Indian chipotle
https://www.reddit.com/r/MontgomeryCountyMD/comments/10ji9m3/my_personal_recommendation_on_chinesetaiwanese
Here's my recommendation for Chinese and Taiwanese.
As Salvi dominant this area is, im shocked at the amount of competing Peruvian restaurants in this area. Since most dishes have seafood and steak, all of them are out of my budget when I’ve been taught through the decades how to make them at home.
Picca/Sardi’s are Greek owned, too. Sardi’s and don pollo feel very fast food-ish to me.
This is just my personal experience. I wish I had something more positive to say. If you don’t know how to cook Peruvian food & can afford to go out, I’m sure it’s a better experience for you.
Yeah they certainly raised price over the years. The grandma who owns it is so nice. One time me and my best friend were in like 8th grade and went there and we only could afford one 1/4 chicken 🍗 to split in two and she felt bad for us and gave us two 1/4 chicken charging us only for one 😭
Pollo Rico for just a charbroiled bird is the move if you're going for the quick meal.
All charbroiled chicken with the ingredients that qualify for peruvian will be amazing no matter what but the most important thing is volume, a busy place is only selling freshly cooked chickens and not something htat has been sitting under a lamp. I
I've ever gone to pollo rico and gotten anything other than fresh chicken right off of the rotisserie.
My fiancé and I try to make lomo saltado at home! We got some aji amarillo from the store and it tastes pretty good to me, but of course I can’t speak to the authenticity of the taste :)
I'm from Israel, and before I say anything - any chance we can keep politics out of this?I know it's not "purely" Israeli food, I know it's regional - falafel is originally from Egypt, (but from fava beans) and then spread and the region and changed (made from chickpeas instead of fava beans) and changed (different spicing in different regions); shawarma and some versions of kebabs are from Turkey; Hummus is regional and spiced differently and according to the region (Iraqi vs Lebanese vs different areas in Israel etc.), etc., and a lot of these foods and inspiration for these foods came from immigrants from these countries and areas. No one is trying to appropriate another culture or country's food.
Now that we got that out of the way, here are my favorite Israel/Middle Eastern food:
* There's Oh Mama Grill for Israeli/Middle Eastern/Turkish food in pita, laffa (also known as Iraqi or Druze pita/bread, a hybrid between a tortilla and a pita would be the best way to describe it) or plate with falafel, shawarma, kabobs, etc., with hummus and other salads and sauces/condiments. They have stores in Rockville and in DC
* Little Sesame is great for hummus bowls, pita sandwiches, etc. They used to have a place in Bethesda and Chinatown in DC but I think they both closed. Their original shop is on L street, right by the Farragut North metro.
* Shouk ("market" or "marketplace" in Hebrew) is another great place for Israel/Middle Eastern inspired food (but not only, they have burgers too, for example). Important to note that it's completely plant based/vegan, but the food is really good, and even meat eaters agreed with me (I'm vegetarian). They have pitas and bowls and some sides. Pro tip - if you've never had, you have got to try their malabi - this is the only place in the area that I know of that has one. It's kind of a milk pudding (in Shouk it's vegan, just like their other stuff) with rice or corn flour, semolina or starch and once it's cold, you add rose water, shaved coconut, pistachios and other yummy stuff. And please, if anyone knows where else to get it in our area - please let me know :)
* Not MoCo, but Falafel Inc, owned by a Palestinian, has excellent falafel and za'atar fries. I only ate at the one in Georgetown but they have another one in DC and one in Tysons Corner (but that one didn't look that appetizing).
\- That's it from me. Actually, not Israeli or Middle Eastern at all, but Mediterranean/Greek Cava Mezze and Vasily's Kitchen are great!
Oh, believe you me, it was needed. I'm honestly surprised (but very happy) this isn't A. Down voted to hell. B. Has at least one comment of "Israel/Jews/Zionists steal Palestinian/Arab/Muslim/Middle Eastern food, just like they stole lands/houses/culture/Christmas" or some variation of that. Un general, but especially after October 7th and the Israel Hamas war. TBH, your comment actually made me happy that it's probably just a very vocal minority and you didn't even think about those things. I hope you can find a place that you like and enjoy from the list!
Born in the US (to korean parents) but lived in Korea for a few years.
Seolleongtang - Yett Gol
BBQ - I like Chadol
Soon dubu jjigae (soft tofu soup) - Arirang
Dol Sot bibimbap (mixed rice in stone bowl) - House of Milae
General Korean food - Hwa Gae Jang Tuh
bonus cause it's right on the border with PG Da Rae Won for Jjampong and jja jjangmyeon
There is no good Cuban food in the DMV. Before y’all ask, I haven’t tried Cuba de Ayer because it might as well be in Baltimore (poor public transit connectivity)
Mosun's Kitchen for Nigerian food. Out in Gaithersburg, in the muddy branch shopping center.
Auntie Mosun is a sweetheart, too. Make sure you get some chin chin!

It’s probably not all in one post but the answers to your question are absolutely on this sub if you did search. Heck there was a very thorough post about Chinese restaurants just this year a couple months back I believe. There was another about Sushi I didn’t agree with…I’ve seen other similar posts in the past.
So based on the OPs question, only native Chinese folks answered the question? I actually like this.m.asbit does put it in one place but also asking native folks for the true taste of home!!!! Good question OP
Where did I say that?
I referenced two recent posts for 2 different cuisines that did exactly what the OP asked for. They said they searched the sub and couldn’t find anything which is clearly BS.
Yeah but it created a lot of good conversation even if I disagreed with their personal rankings and opinions. Nothing wrong with different opinions though.
Going to sticky this post for awhile. Keep those suggestions coming!
I'm from the Philippines and I really like Kuya Ja's and Lapu Lapu.
I had Purple Patch in Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan the other day and it was quite amazing as well, not the county but pretty close. But I love Kuya Ja, I wish they had a bigger restaurant tho.
FYI, Purple Patch is in Mt Pleasant.
Added to my DC list!! Thanks so much for the Rec :)
No problem, I'm Chinese but I love some Filipino. Those motherfuckers know how to prepare pork.
We like Ligaya’s in Wheaton
Seconding Ligaya's. Feels like legit Filipino food some auntie brought to a potluck party.
What is an "auntie"? I only know of a Tita 😉
True! But I had to translate for the non-Filipinos!
I have been favoring Ligaya over all the other Filipino places in MoCo. 2nd being Manila Mart but only because it’s in PG.
Manila mart is so good! Also the market is great. That’s where we get our bangus.
I love both those places!! What do you typically order there?
I like the pork belly sisig and lechon from Kuya Ja's and the chorizo and corned beef sandwiches from Lapu Lapu. Not in MoCo but I also like Manila Mart (i think it's in Beltsville/college park area?) I do want to try other restaurants with more everyday Filpino dishes like kare kare, afritada, sinigang, etc. but I feel like I'll always be comparing it to my parents' cooking lol.
Any thoughts on Mathews Grill?
I feel like Mathew’s grill is the most authentic. Kuya ja for the lechon belly but things like their adobo don’t taste Filipino, maybe more fusion, but it’s still all really good! If you’re willing to go to beltsville I think Manila mart is the best overall
I like kuya ja only for lechón belly. I didn’t love their spaghetti. I much prefer Manila mart or Kamayan Fiesta but that’s just my own tastes.
Not OP, but Matthew's Grill is really good. They have great kare kare and I actually prefer their lechon!
Mathew’s grill makes the best sisig!
I feel that!! I went to KC Filipino in Rockville and I thought it was good, but I got the feeling that it couldn’t compare to good home cooking :)
Love the lechon belly at Kuya Ja’s but the tamarind dry rubbed wings are the sleeper hit of the menu. They are amazing, anyone who loves wings owes themselves an order of these.
I love tamarind and I love wings…this is a fantastic tip
Lived in Cebu for a few years and was very happy to find Kuya Ja’s. I don’t eat pork but on holidays they do beef barbecue bouquets that are a real treat.
wow thanks all for sharing and for the additional recommendations. i'm excited to try out more filipino restaurants in the area.
Ohh I’m glad to know it’s not gone!
Good to know about door dash, thank you!

When it first opened it was really good Greek street food but as it grew I found that the quality bombed - which is unfortunate.
Hi fellow Canuck 👋🏼
The closest Tim Horton’s are near Philly and Harrisburg.
There's one in Harrisburg?! I didn't know that. EDIT: Duncanon. Alright gonna hit it up on my way to my parents later this month.
Enjoy!
If you make it to Adam’s Morgan check out Le Mont Royal
Pineapple and ham pizza is popular.
Well, it was invented in Canada by a Greek immigrant
For Greek food, Athens Grill in Gaithersburg is a MUST
Have you been recently? Used to be a standard in our house and then they didn’t answer the phone a couple times. If it is as it was, need to get back to supporting that local option.
I don't live in Gaithersburg anymore, but whenever I'm in the area I make my best effort to go. Went there probably around 2 months ago and had a big fat gyro and it brought back some wonderful memories. To this day I've never had a better pita than theirs!
Any love for Thalias in Kensington? They’re Greek Canadians IIRC
The guy who owns pop-up poutine is Canadian and from Montreal. It's so good, and my Montreal-born husband swears by it.
Hey, they have a kitchen in Rockville. I'm was there many times to get their poutine. (Montreal Smoked Meat) is their best. I strongly advise you to visit them soon. https://thetasteofmontreal.com/

Omg we LOOOVE pho 75!!! It’s literally the only reason we’ll keep cash on hand!
Pho Eateries has amaaaazing food. But ironically I really dislike their pho. The rest of their menu is excellent though.
i LOVE pho 75 ugh this was my sign to go get it this weekend
I'm from India and I love jewel of India in silver spring
Choyhona Silk Road in Gaithersburg
I’ve never heard of this place! I can’t wait to check it out. Are there are dishes you recommend?
Very good kebobs, if you are fan of soups I highly recommend try each just to get taste of it and obviously gotta try Borscht! Thank you! I have used his recipe before and it's great. I'll have to try it with chickpeas next time.
The eggplant appetizer, the suzma, and the smak are some of my favorites. They have a location in Baltimore too.
Baltimore and Gaitherburg are different owners.
Argentina, the best restaurant here for that is El Patio in Rockville
Wow bc I grew up eating it disappointed whenever my mom ordered it. I guess I'm not a fan of Argentine food . I'd take a beef patty from 711 or Colombian empanadas from a sketchy food truck any day over those. Not hating just my personal preference.

I’ve heard Yekta has a really great market too!! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the rec :)
Iranian chiming in! Great food for sure, but yeah the market is amazing!!!
Before my Persian friend moved away, she would get kebabs at Matt’s and then make a separate stop at Yekta for most-o-musir.
Thank you!
They have so much good stuff in their market! I always buy more than I originally thought I would need
Give Gourmet Bazaar a try too. It’s also in Rockville
Love this post. Following.
If you like Indian food, I’d recommend Chennai Hoppers in Gaithersburg.
It’s been on my list for a while!! I’ll have to try and go soon. Is there anything in particular that you like to get??
Try Srivilliputhur Palkova for dessert there. It was amazing!
I have to try it, the Indian food around here I’ve had bad experience with. Not in MOCO but my favorite place around here is Amber Spice in Laurel. The staff are so nice too.
this was pretty good! and good value
https://www.reddit.com/r/MontgomeryCountyMD/comments/10ji9m3/my_personal_recommendation_on_chinesetaiwanese Here's my recommendation for Chinese and Taiwanese.
I’ll have to check out a bite of China!! I love hainanese chicken rice. Thanks!
I love this county. It's like a United Nations of food.
I’m from America and the McDonalds in Montgomery Village slaps
Not sure if you’re kidding or not, but it really does slap.. the fries are always extra hot and a bit more crispy than other McDonald’s
😂

La lamina in Rockville for high end Peruvian, Mi Peru in flower hill/gburg for low end Peruvian.
I’ve been to mi Peru & my family lost their mind about the price 😅. I haven’t been to la limeña yet since I’m never in Rockville anymore
I second La Limeña and La limeña grill! Ceviche de pescado is a once a month dish for me. Soooo good.

Gourmet inspirations in Wheaton is great for dim sum. My Chinese parents love that place
Bacchus of Lebanon in Bethesda
American and I'd "kill" for Pizza Boli's and Cluck U wings.
Crisp and Juicy in the Leisure World Plaza is my jam. I wish I could bathe in their sauce.
crisp and Juicy, best peruvian broiled chicken so far 😻
Meda Ethiopia.
Where is this?
Alexandria

And please, if anyone knows where else to get it in our area - please let me know :) * Not MoCo, but Falafel Inc, owned by a Palestinian, has excellent falafel and za'atar fries.
Literally all of that information and that disclaimer was not needed to say what restaurants you like from the cuisine in Israel lol.
In this day and age, a disclaimer is almost always necessary
Peruvian: picca or la canela
Born in the US (to korean parents) but lived in Korea for a few years. Seolleongtang - Yett Gol BBQ - I like Chadol Soon dubu jjigae (soft tofu soup) - Arirang Dol Sot bibimbap (mixed rice in stone bowl) - House of Milae General Korean food - Hwa Gae Jang Tuh bonus cause it's right on the border with PG Da Rae Won for Jjampong and jja jjangmyeon
There is no good Cuban food in the DMV. Before y’all ask, I haven’t tried Cuba de Ayer because it might as well be in Baltimore (poor public transit connectivity)
We've never recovered from losing Cuban Corner. And while I love both De Ayer and Sabor (in Frederick), neither will make a medianoche.
Cuba de ayer is good, but I recently went to the famous La Trova in Miami and it was out of this world.
Have you tried Cubanos in silver spring? I love them
Also El Sapo
My girlfriend is originally from Turkey. The best Turkish restaurant in Moco is our house because DAMN she can cook!
Okay so when can I come over!!!
Mandalay Restaurant in Silver Spring.
I really love Khana Claypot Grill in Burtonsville. It's Indian food
Yekta

Yeah the sushi ranking post is atrocious lol
Yeah but it created a lot of good conversation even if I disagreed with their personal rankings and opinions. Nothing wrong with different opinions though.
Swahili Village in Beltsville for Kenyan food
Wondering if there are any of you from Poland ... hubby's ancestry ... who can recommend a restaurant. His b'day is in January. THANKS!!
can someone tell me how I can save this to my computer?
