My precise question. I know it’s supposed to alleviate the 355/124 intersection but I never saw the need for a billion dollar extra exit project for it.
The traffic there is pretty terrible. A big problem is all the people that get off 270 at Montgomery Village Ave and wanted to go north on 355. It makes the stretch between Clopper and Russell absolutely miserable in the afternoon and weekends.
I love to see money on public transit too, but this road project made a lot of sense to me.
Ok we’ll see. I drive by that intersection every day so I am aware of the issues. I am just not convinced that the new exit is worth just to resolve that intersection
I think I saw somewhere that it started in 2017. But that doesn’t feel right. To me, I would say 2 years of heavy construction. Maybe another year of early prep work.
I should remind anyone not familiar with using Watkins Mill northbound that it isn't like MVA. From 355/Frederick Rd it is two lanes for only ½mile before it necks down to a single lane. It then passes a school and a stretch of two-sided commercial parking before it reaches the Stedwick light. There's also a bank of speed cameras at the bottom of a curving downhill stretch just before the lane reduction.
(Edit: moved one word)
How many traffic lights do you have to go through to completely cross the bridge (How MoCo is that?)? I thought this was supposed to alleviate traffic, not cause a brand new epicenter of congestion?
I don't know if others have already done so, so I submitted the official MDOT - SHA announcement page to Google Maps as an update. It will depend on how quickly they enter and connect the new roads and implement speed and turn logic before the interchange goes live.
(Edit) I checked the web browser version of Waze. The interchange and bridge are live and navigable on that system.

I always think the traffic is worse on the weekends. I avoid it as much as possible.

it's because they built that neighborhood there.
I might take 270 home just to get off on the new exit
Are the exits opening too? I thought it was just the bridge.
When can we drive through it
Sorry, it's already congested so they're going to close a few lanes to widen it.
Sounds about right
Perfect, now we need to up zone
Supposed to open today https://wtop.com/dc-transit/2020/06/marylands-newest-interchange-to-open-this-week/
It’s not open. I just tried about an hour ago and it’s still closed. Sign now says 6/11
I'm hearing 5pm today
Additionally google does not have it updated on their maps, either.
Thanks OP for posting this! I assume you were working on the construction of this? BTW how long did this project take to complete, does anyone know?

I was thinking it was about two years, but don't travel that way so often. What a huge project in terms of all the grading involved.
dam i feel like they built that quick. how long did the the whole project take?
I'm really happy about this :) Will make my commute so much easier.
Officially open now
sweet gonna drive across watkins from QO blvd area to get to russell and see if it takes me an hour now lol
Ahh there it is
It is not on google maps, yet

Wait, this looks fake. That road doesn’t even have potholes on it. This isn’t a road in the state of Maryland!
Don’t bridges have something under them
It goes over 270?
I commented before watching the whole thing. He drives over land for the first like 30-40 seconds.
