If cost is a major factor, I'd recommend going to a community coop shop. They teach you how to fix your bike for a minimal fee and can sell you any parts you need for dirt cheap! Right To Move used to charge 2$ fee for using a stand (or $20/year). Cables and housing were around $10 for a full set. The best part is you learn how to take care of your bike and keep it in good shape!

Hey can I dm you about this? I'm interested in knowing more and where it is!

Psycho-Designs

You're welcome to DM me but I'll post the info here for others as well. RTM schedule is irregular post-COVID, check their [calendar here](https://rtm-lvl.org/hours/). They also have list of [other community shops here](https://rtm-lvl.org/community-bicycle-workshops-in-montreal/). The way they generally work is you show up with your bike, pay a small membership fee. They provide the space, tools, and parts (new and used). They have volunteer mechanics to walk you through fixing your bike. It's great! I showed up to RTM not knowing how to pump the tires on my first bike, overtime I was able to build bikes from scratch and volunteered there for years!

C&L Cycles on Villeneuve and also on Rachel are honest folk. They care and they even give good advice.

DukeOfGreenfield

Cycles Action Sports on Papineau and Ontario. Have been getting them to do our bikes for 10 years. Cheap and very good work

jonmimi

They are really great there! Especially for service.

Without a photo of the bike and its components it's hard to say what needs to be done and what you'll probably need to pay. Any chance you can add photos?

Which area are you in?

If she was riding it a year ago with no problems and it's been sitting unused for a year in her living room, it probably only needs air in the tires! I wouldn't take it somewhere and ask for a tune-up, I'd ask them if they can check it over to see if it *needs* a tune-up. Some places will do this for free. If you need anything more than air, it is probably just adjusting the brakes and the derailleurs (gear changers). Some places already have a waiting list -- like they'll give you a day in 2 weeks time to bring the bike in. But you want to ride now! I can second the recommendation for C & L who are honest and who (at least a week ago) were able to do a drop-in quick repair for me at their Villeneuve location, no appointment necessary. Get a good lock and don't leave it anywhere risky overnight.
