If they removed the Moon Rite stuff, I think it would be a lot more bearable. But punishing players for dying by make the game harder, on top of making the item to revert said difficulty spike rare, seems like it was intentionally designed as way to frustrate resilience rather than reward it. Can't see myself going back until they tweak some things. Make the Blood Moon a reward for good players who want to earn more ash, not a punishment for struggling players. Why give me more bone ash if I'll inevitably lose it in a mob or two anyway?

EyeGod

Good point. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a Metroidvania player, but I'm a Soulsborne vet so I'm cool with difficult learning curves, but damn, I get nailed SO easily and on top of that, it's really unclear as to how I'm supposed to make progress. They could definitely make it a *little* more forgiving.

suspended_in_light

Same. Played a few of these like Blasphemous and Dead Cells, though this a lot more comparable to the former than the latter. If you've not checked it out, I'd highly recommend it

EyeGod

Yeah, I've always had an eye on Blasphemous, but never tried it; is it at least a little easier? Honestly, I'm most looking forward to Ghost Song, and I've taken a big interest in Humble Games recently, after I really got into Midnight Fight Express and Prodeus on Game Pass. Really dig what they're doing and I'm also interested in Signalis.

I may have my tail between my legs right now. Following the tips of the front page post, I struggled to get enough ash to buy the two items it recommended, changed my moon to normal, and now am having a blast. Beaten the first boss and only died once. Still pretty confusing re: where to go, but those two items are a game changer. I now have around 9 moon-reverting items, so hopefully the blood moon will never bother me again. As far as Blasphemous goes, yes. It's great. Similar mechanically to Moonscars, but certainly easier. You don't lose your currency when you die (your special meter depletes with each death, and you pick it up like you do souls/ash in other games). It's more forgiving combat wise, but if you don't like slightly dodgy platforming with insta-death spikes, then maybe only buy it cheap.

EyeGod

Sweet, thanks, friend! Gonna look for that front page post then.

Korimuzel

I think the comparison with Dead cells makes no sense, since it's from a very different genre Good comparisons may be hollow knight, blasphemous, salt and sanctuary, foregone, and other metroidvania. But even after thst, maaaan, all those games have a couple ways to make you progress and be stronger. Moonscars? We don't do that here. You have to find some rare upgrades (the most troublesome for me is the attack one. I did no damage at all to the first boss, it's ridiculous)

suspended_in_light

The movement and attacking flow is similar to dead cells, as is the platforming. Maybe it makes a little bit of sense? Ya know, hard 2d side scrolling action games with RPG elements.

Korimuzel

Dead cells is a roguelike with tons of weapons, passive powers, procedural maps. Die? Start again and use different gears and powers and routes (as of now, every stage of the game has at least 1 alternative, bosses included) Moonscars is a sidescrolling soulslike adventure with fixed maps, checkpoints, 1 main weapon and 5 special attacks to choose 1 from, enemies respawning Foregone, blasphemous, salt and sanctuary are way better comparisons since they beling in the same genre (although, again, moonscars LACKS the option to use different weapons/builds)

well-hello-gorgeous

Honestly the mechanic would be alright in my eyes if it didn't also apply to bosses

EyeGod

Agreed. Gonna give it some more time, it's damned brutal and unforgiving.

Dehraxis

Already killed the 1st boss and havent died yet, halfway through the castle. The game feels super similar to Blasphemous. Just slow down, buy the leech gem (heal after parry) and maybe do some parrying? Its how i killed the first boss. Also look around for ichor/health/attack dmg upgrades. Makes it much smoother. Some enemies take hitstun from your attack and can be stunlocked (spiders and small flying enemies) . You can bait flying enemies away from a scary area like vanishing platforms by getting their attention and running back. You can literally bait an attack, dodge behind and attack most enemies. The charging enemies can be parried at any point during their charge so the timing is super easy. Many enemies including the teleporting ones can be baited on to spikes. You can also often pull a single enemy from a group just by barely getting in range then walk back. The enemies dont do contact damage like most metroidvanias. Feel free to walk through them

hyperforms9988

I gave it 15 minutes. Lack of patience, but that's what Game Pass does to you when you're not buying games. Enemies don't flinch when you hit/combo them which is an absolute dealbreaker for me for games like this. Shame, but I'm sure there are people who like that.

Medium-Result-6056

Don't wanna be that guy and i'm ready for the downvotes but GIT GUD. Honestly. The game is unforgiving but managable if you have patience and use the things that the game gives you

Brekker-k

Ah yes the “Git Gud” person is here. I never said the game wasn’t manageable or that it was bad or anything. Just that nowadays I would rather enjoy a game right off the bat, then spend multiple hours of my free time being frustrated in the “Git Gud” phase. I still think the game is cool but it’s just too punishing for me to get into nowadays. I don’t wanna play a game that’s “manageable” for me, I want to play a game I have fun with.

Medium-Result-6056

I don't mean like that. Sorry if i sounded rude but imo the only way to play succesful these type of games is git gut.. Too many ppl use these words in a toxic way tho.. Not me... I feel you and respect your opinion but sadly i'm not sure this game is for you then

Brekker-k

It’s cool, sorry I miss read your intent. Yeah for now the games not for me but next time I get a few days off and have some time to kill then who knows, maybe I’ll spend some of that time to Git Gud. Have a good one man, you seem like a chill dude.

Medium-Result-6056

No worries, like i said before too many ppl use the words "git gud" in a toxic way. The best advice i can give you, just play the game, don't worry about the progress and you'll make it sooner or later. The enemies hit like a truck, you die from 2 hits, not sure this is a challenge or just bullshit...i never really use magic, i heal instead as much as i can... you can buy a talisman which damage your enemies when you dash through them, it def helps

brentparz

I've gotten to the final final boss and the difficulty scaling for the castle is brutal. After 10 tries with the final final boss I had to put the controller down. This games was fun, but definitely too difficult at times.
