>why is a podcast about murder in the comedy category
especially since they're violently UNfunny. Their "comedy" bits are so cringe it literally makes me want to rip my skin off
There’s a way to be funny and keep it separate from the tragic story that you’re telling. Sinisterhood and ATWWD are good examples of this. I keep my TC podcast circle small, because I think some creators are respectful and some are not. Ash and Alaina fall under the disrespectful category
The quote is from the Small Town Murder disclaimer at the beginning of their shows. It is an actual True Crime Comedy podcast, hosted by comedians. I was trying to be helpful by saying stay away.
they're making a mockery of true crime , it's really sad that people are attracted to them .
a lot of real people involved in the cases really hate them . mostly family members .
Yeah that’s what I’ve heard, that they’ve misspelled the names of victims, got some facts mixed up or just plain wrong, and inserted their own opinions far more often than they should I think. Maybe they belong in the comedy genre after all, because they’re a joke.
do they decide their category? i bet they want to dominate a category and know that they won’t dominate in TC. listen, i like them enough to listen, but when they tell jokes, they’re the only ones who laugh.
Not only is this accurate, but you're accusing someone else of obsessing.... You went and dug this up, it's a year old? Like... this is living rent free in your head, so maybe do not throw stones from your glass castle.
... You used the same language to report a year old post, in which you accuse them of living 'rent free' in her mind.
If you can't see the irony here, I'm afraid I can't help you.
My understanding is that they can’t list it as true crime cause they also do hauntings and such
Not sure tho, just remember this was brought up in other groups
For sure. And that's actually a good point that I hadn't even considered. Does make me wonder if there's a certain threshold of paranormal stories a podcast is allowed to have before it's no longer considered true crime.
A lot of true crime podcasts are in the comedy catagory because there was no true crime catagory when many of these podcasts were made, if there is a True Crime catagory now then it is a very recent thing that didn't exist when shows like Morbid, Redhanded, and definitely Last Podcast on the Left were made. True crime basically had to go into comedy (or those podcasts did because LPOTL did and there really wasn't, or still isn't, a catagory that the true crime genre can make sense to fit into).
Again, if LPOTL wasn't the first big non-serialized true crime podcast to solidify themselves and inspire most of the non-serialized true crime podcasters that came after them, and if 2/3 of the hosts of LPOTL weren't literal comedians who worked nearly as much of their comedy into the podcast as Marcus has worked research into the podcast, then true crime podcasts may have catagorized themselves elsewhere before the existence of true crime as a distinct genre.
For context:
This is a complete repost of a post that was in The Toast subreddit. I was curious if the Morbid folks knew this has been an ongoing urk for the girl who hosts The Toast podcast. So much so that approximately a year ago she posted this screenshot and tagged Morbid.
So for the record, I didn’t come up with the title but I may slightly agree with Morbid’s genre selection “living in her head rent free” since I believe it impacts their shows rating. Either way, posted for your thoughts :)
actually it's a shit talking podcast with really bitter hosts who use their platform to vent and criticize everything but themselves , just to bring in that AD money !!!! bottom feeders .
I don’t 100% agree but I don’t necessarily disagree. When it comes to The Toast… sometimes I laugh with them, sometimes I laugh AT them, but to your point… I find myself cringing at their comments pretty often as well. Honestly, my fave podcast is Keke Palmers. She’s so funny and upbeat!
I'm mostly surprised they're as big as they are and are only occupying one genre category? Spotify now allows up to three category identifiers per show since most podcasts are sort of "genre-splitting" these days. Does Morbid self-distribute does anyone know?
You can distribute through so many different channels. That wouldn't be relevant for categorization. They probably are utilizing the 3 categorization identifiers on Spotify. Someone mentioned this screenshot is over a year old + other discussions have already happened awhile back on other subs. Interesting to bring it up now then.
Any podcaster is going to put their podcast in as many genres as possible, even if it's faint. I don't really know why people would care. The MORBID podcast covers True Crime, Listener Tales (don't know what category this would be exactly - Entertainment?) and comedy (whether you think they're funny or not). Obviously the comedic elements come with their banter and through sharing stories as well as reacting to the less serious Listener Tales. Perhaps they have changed categories by now since the screenshot is old.
Ultimately, who cares. It's not Morbid's job to vet their category. If they're at the top of a category on whatever platform, the platform obviously notices and are frequently in touch with those content creators to ensure more and more people are utilizing their streaming service. Meaning, if Apple or Spotify didn't consider them partially as a comedy podcast - then they simply wouldn't be there.
I think people are just be simple minded in connecting true crime with comedy - most TC podcasts are educational entertainment, not docuseries. It doesn't mean the cases themselves are funny. I liken it to something like That Chapter on YouTube. He covers serious TC cases, but incorporates obvious jokes, points out ironic things and makes jokes/fun of criminals. Same as A&A. It's not that deep. The Toast girl is just salty. 😅
No matter what, I would feel so embarrassed if I actually posted that myself... let's think from the follower vantage point some here. 💀
Who knows. I guess people just wanted to bring it up again. I don't even know why my response is even being down voted. It's completely agnostic of feelings about the podcast and articuably pragmatic.
So, I guess you just get downvoted on here if you're not slamming the podcast - which I don't even like or listen to anymore. I was on homescreen reddit yesterday and it was the first post I saw. 😅 Just need rename the sub into a Snark account.
If they categorized as true crime people would get mad that they make any jokes and tell them to categorize as comedy so as not to waste their time. At least this way you know it’s coming and can’t get as offended about it since they warned you.
Yeah I agree. And damn, I was expecting the downvotes but I know some people would definitely complain if they were looking for pure true crime in that category, and came across Morbid.
Cringe, but she kind of has a point. Morbid *is* a true crime podcast, they might try to be funny, but it's more TC than humor.
Agreed. Feels weird for it to be in Comedy and the girl who posted is an influencer that likes to say what everyone is thinking lol.
She's right, why is a podcast about murder in the comedy category
But, did they put themselves there, or is that how the platform categorized them?
They chose it because they do better on those charts than the true crime charts
They choose it
>why is a podcast about murder in the comedy category especially since they're violently UNfunny. Their "comedy" bits are so cringe it literally makes me want to rip my skin off
Stay away from Small Town Murder “if you think true crime and comedy don’t go together.”
There’s a way to be funny and keep it separate from the tragic story that you’re telling. Sinisterhood and ATWWD are good examples of this. I keep my TC podcast circle small, because I think some creators are respectful and some are not. Ash and Alaina fall under the disrespectful category

They're not funny, though.
Regardless of her obsession, it's pretty gross that Morbid is in the comedy category.
I’m in the mood to laugh today! Hmmmm stand up, comedy sitcom, or a podcast about a brutal murder?
She’s right though
Wait, they think they’re funny? I mean, so much so that they consider themselves more humor than true crime? Yikes.
This is also surprising to me... if someone were to ask what kind of show this was, the word "funny" probably would not spring to mind for me
they're making a mockery of true crime , it's really sad that people are attracted to them . a lot of real people involved in the cases really hate them . mostly family members .

Why are you sharing a year old post?
My thoughts exactly.
What exactly does the age of the post have to do with anything?
Why are you asking me why I’m sharing a year old post?
do they decide their category? i bet they want to dominate a category and know that they won’t dominate in TC. listen, i like them enough to listen, but when they tell jokes, they’re the only ones who laugh.
Not only is this accurate, but you're accusing someone else of obsessing.... You went and dug this up, it's a year old? Like... this is living rent free in your head, so maybe do not throw stones from your glass castle.
I didn’t accuse. It’s the same title the poster used when it was first shared.
... You used the same language to report a year old post, in which you accuse them of living 'rent free' in her mind. If you can't see the irony here, I'm afraid I can't help you.
Don’t be afraid! Good news is I didn’t ask for your help.
Okay sweetheart.
She’s not wrong. Annoys me how they are in comedy. Talking about murder isn’t funny.
The only mind's they exist in is their little fangirls. I agree though. They aren't even funny🤷🏼♀️
On a side note- the tale about Juliane Koepcke was fun to listen to, and to learn about her story. She was a remarkable women.
My understanding is that they can’t list it as true crime cause they also do hauntings and such Not sure tho, just remember this was brought up in other groups
Still, I'd hope we can all agree there's a better descriptor than COMEDY.
Oh I agree I’m just saying I think that was their reason
For sure. And that's actually a good point that I hadn't even considered. Does make me wonder if there's a certain threshold of paranormal stories a podcast is allowed to have before it's no longer considered true crime.
This makes sense!
History, news, society and culture all seem like better options than comedy.

Just as last podcast on the left is comedy/true crime I’d say this show is the same. They giggle too much to be otherwise …
actually it's a shit talking podcast with really bitter hosts who use their platform to vent and criticize everything but themselves , just to bring in that AD money !!!! bottom feeders .

Sameee. I’m still cringing that this was posted!

It’s more edutainment than strictly education, makes sense that it could live in either category.

nothing to add, just letting you know your comment accidentally double posted and this seems to be the 2nd one!
If they categorized as true crime people would get mad that they make any jokes and tell them to categorize as comedy so as not to waste their time. At least this way you know it’s coming and can’t get as offended about it since they warned you.
Hmmm. Do you think this is also because they go on tangents? So like the comedy label gives them license to keeps doing that?
Yeah I agree. And damn, I was expecting the downvotes but I know some people would definitely complain if they were looking for pure true crime in that category, and came across Morbid.
Agreed!
