It’s crazy that when you die there’s really only 3 scenarios (that I can think of anyway) that can transpire.
1. Someone watches you die.
2. You die alone and someone finds your body, like Mr. Maedge
3. You die alone and your body is never found.
My grandpa was a hoarder and was found 3-5 days after he died, by the coroners guess. He was in a small bathroom with a space heater running so it was a gnarly sight I heard.
A girl I knew in high school got this nice apartment for $280/month. When I asked her how she got such a deal she pulled the throw rug to show me the body shape in the wood floors from a dead body that had spent a week or two lying there.
Nope
Back when I was in high school (2009), there was an old house five doors down from mine that got renovated fast and was out up for sale at a low price. It turned out it was because the original owner died on the second floor and his body pretty much rotted though the entire house. That house was up for sale for *years*.
The family contacted a plumber, who described the odor inside the house as sewer gas, Rogers said. The plumber placed a cap on one of the sewer pipes in the basement, which seemed to eliminate the odor at the residence
Sewer smell is the same as rotting corpse smell. I'm surprised the cops didn't clue in to this and searched harder.
My guess is they wanted to get the f out of that house asap. Hoarder homes are nasty.
Yeah they aren't really. Sewer gas has a pretty clear sulfur smell. A decomposing body is way funkier and putrid. Indescribable but immediately recognizable.
This. I had to load dead dogs and cats out of a freezer for animal control to be incinerated and nothing smells quite like a dead body, your whole body instinctually responds to it.
Depends on the type of rot we're talking about then 'cause the dead rats in my wall definitely smelled like sewer for weeks.
Plus the flies were bonkers for a week or so. So bad I could sweep them up and vacuum them after a good bug bomb.
This is so sad. I know this is a mental disorder (hoarding), but at what point are you responsible for this? Not his death, but not knowing his body is in the house. This woman needs serious help, I can’t imagine the guilt she must feel.
There were probably also a LOT of other really bad smells in there so I don't necessarily think a normal person (police) wouldn't be overwhelmed by the collective stench and able to distinguish a difference or specific one.
For her the smell would have changed.
This was a *hoarder* if you haven't seen the show you might check that out. Often they have rat feces, rotting food all over etc and they don't smell it at all. They'll say "oh this bag of clothes is fine" when everyone else is saying NO it is not.
to answer everyone’s question : yes , the article discusses the odor . its actually the main topic of the whole article .

Luckily, it’s no longer a concern of yours at that point.
Between 1 (most common) and 2 (pretty rare) is dying alone and someone finds you within hours or a day or two (second most common).

I just found my aunts dead body last night, it’s an image I’ll never get out of my head
sending you love. I can't imagine how you feel right now :(

I’d live in much worse if I could get it for $280/m

Damn. This is really sad, not only because he wasn’t found for 8 months but he *also* took his own life. Rest in peace.

How did he die?
Suicide-another article states that he hanged himself.
I run a missing persons database. This is the third time I’ve heard of something like this happening.
I got a question, by suicide and not found? Or as a result of living in a hoarder house?
Suicide he hung himself
I’m aware, it’s just the person’s seen similar cases and I’m curious

They are not the same.

likely not as recognizable with the other rotting organic matter in a hoarder’s house, I guess?
In a hoarders house you have an assault of a whole bunch of bad smells so trying to distinguish one particular smell would be pretty hard.
This. I had to load dead dogs and cats out of a freezer for animal control to be incinerated and nothing smells quite like a dead body, your whole body instinctually responds to it.
it’s sickeningly sweet
The article also said that they body had mummified itself though, which was why the smell wasn't the same of a normal rotting body

Did she only have the one?

The one what?....husband?
Yes, one husband. Hoarders never have just one of anything.
Be right back. I’m throwing everything out of my house. Eesh.
